    Why are they using STEEL parts? They could dramatically cut the 42lbs weight with composites and plastics.

    • @diedevanmarle
      @diedevanmarle 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alluminium is a great material for things like this, easy formable cheap and strong, carbon is kinda expensive for a thing which most probably wilk break quite frequent

    • @TristynRusselo
      @TristynRusselo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      3d printing could make super strong light-weight parts, composite materials would be great for the main structure.
      @ pingu van bree - where are you getting carbon from? composites can be made by combining any material, carbon is not a requirement.

    • @diedevanmarle
      @diedevanmarle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used carbon as one of the simpler examples, the cons of 3D printing is that its hard to shape alot of shapes and goes quite slow, yes there are faster ways but its just a little underdeveloped. Also filament is quite expensive. For these backpacks 3D printing is just too unstable. Yes it can be strong but if you make mistakes you pay for it, in money and time. Alluminium is superb for this kind of projects, because you can change thing way easier. Other composites are still not really cheap and easy to work with, because with alot of composites you have to mold. This is why i think their choice of material is good. But if you can tell me some better examples, feel free, im always interested in new materials and stuff. hopefully hear back from you :) i think they want things to be Easy to fix because complexer Construction can Be a Pain in the ass to make and repair. also aluminium is already quite lightweigth

      If durability is a fear with polymers and composites, then they could experiment with other metals. Aluminum and Magnesium are very popular in industrial manufacturing right now.

    • @TristynRusselo
      @TristynRusselo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      maybe in the 90s.
      Nylon and PROPER carbon fiber materials have a higher tensile strength and are much lighter than metals.
      Google is should not be worried about cost of just a few units, especially if it cuts weight in half.

    I wonder why the system goes straight up. It could be shaped as an arc that hangs the camera over the operator's head in order to bring the center of gravity forward close to the core of the body.

    • @stevensilverman7547
      @stevensilverman7547 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      cplai Great question, the basic camera electronics are located under the big beach ball shaped camera head. Those electronics are where most of the upper weight is located and we could't get it out of the operator's way and and get the camera over the person's head. The result is not as bad a you might think. With the weight on their backs, the operator's tend to lean a little forward and this does a pretty good job of putting the center of gravity (where the operator feels the weight) over their hips. That said, I think a cool curved trekker mount would be cool.

  • @jedijens

    My 20% project would definitely involve Google Street View. Imagine being able to walk around with cardboard anywhere in the world. If the cars and trekkers would photograph insanely often, like 30 or 60 fps then you could use it kind of like a movie. So if I put on my Cardboard and jumped to a Street View high fps place I could actually walk around and see the world. And no matter how fast or slow I walked it would still feel sort of real because of all the frames and the software would just adjust and skip frames depending on your pace. The coolest would definitely be if it was photographed with a car driving at a pretty high speed and then I would walk through the scene. Things would move in slow motion. People would appear to stand almost still. I could walk past them, walk faster then cars and so on. Please make this happen! At least in a few places as a test.

    Maybe the trekker could go to the Philmont Scout Ranch just south of Cimarron New Mexico? It's the world's largest camp at over 151,000 acres. Lots of miles of hiking trails all starting at 6,700 feet and going up to the top of Mount Baldy which is just over 12,400 feet. It would definitely need to go to the top of the Tooth of Time as well. And with the neighboring land agreements, one could potentially hike in any of 250,000 acres. They have back country camps that specialize in various outdoor Scouting-related activities. More info: www.philmontscoutranch.org

    Interestingly enough, if you created ("#minaturestreetviewdevices") and #SUBARU & HYUNDAI were the only car maker's you merged the idea with, of having a slice of your technology installed into their #Brand, the three of you would hold something of immense value over other car competitor's, consumers might force themselves to buy into the market only with these two Intelligent manufacturers?
    It would also restrict your #patentdesign from being used by any other competitor in the field.
    If you quantified your market potential to all car maker's, you would potentially stifle and plaguarize a world full of same products anyone could access.
    Keep it in the family Google or at best, hold those dear and close to you as predictive sales #skyrocket
    You had the good insight and mediocre response from Eric Schmidt, my thoughts are free.

    Would be a bit crazy but: Doing the renting-thing with difficult law situations for streetview (ex. germany) - could Google give the right to say that not google decided to do 360° photographs there, but the people who rent streetview-hardware and google is only giving the opportunity to let the user do that...
    after a bit more thoughts...
    completely off-google - so it's only on google based software + hardware, but hosting and everything else is in the hand of the user... to have it completely not at googles side if it comes to difficult law situations

    I've always been fascinated by the google maps development team and the ground truth team, the people responsible for the api's and the material design stuff, doubt that will make an exciting video tho....

    Hey Nat and Lo! I love the videos, but was wondering if you two work at Google, what are your official positions there? Your work seems amazing, and (Judging by the comments) really affects people. This kind of work is something I aspire to do too.
