    Mighty late comment, but you deserve a big thank you for this one. I bought this 146 when it first released but it has languished in the hanger all this time, displaced by other attention magnets. However a lot of hours in the excellent F28 rejuvenated curiosity for the BAE, Just Flight's original pro release, and as always your videos serve as great supplements to the manual. If not substitutions for those who'd like to put off that chore!

    I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I purchased the BAE-146 because of your "first look" and "beginner's guide" videos, on it and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I, too, started out 8-bit PCs before moving on to Atari computers (the original 800 with 48k and a cassette player, before getting a massive and expensive floppy drive), a Tandy 286, and later a 386 laptop with a screen that displayed (gasp!) 64 shades of gray. I still remember buying 16 megs of used RAM for $400 in 1993. Anyway, I hope you keep making more videos!

    Thanks for your explanation! I just bought this a couple of weeks ago. This makes stuff like cruising a lot easier (I always turned on sync mode and made minor thrust adjustments during climb and cruise, saw that in the JF tutorial videos)

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep - there are some strange corners to the TMS functionality. Yesterday I had TO mode cancel while rotating - crashed the aircraft as a result (not enough runway left to stop). Very odd.

    • @acfiv1421
      @acfiv1421 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonbeckett Jonathan, thank you for shedding some light on this odd device. MSFS has a big problem with its drag behavior at cruise - you are either speeding up into overspeed territory or slowing down too much. One important thing however - as you mentioned, in certain regimes (at lower altitudes), you can set a TGT which gives a pretty stable airspeed, but at high altitude, the TGT dial will not go lower than 600 degrees, whereas you need something like 500. Is there a way around that?

  • @paetzke165
    @paetzke165 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video, thanks for the clear explanations!
    Just a small detail you would perhaps want to know: An assumed (flex) temperature takeoff doesn’t de-rate the engines - in other words, if you suddenly want TOGA thrust, the engine will give you the maximum certified thrust of that engine.
    On the other hand, in a de-rated takeoff, if you suddenly want TOGA thrust, the engine will only give you the maximum de-rated thrust that you have selected. This type of takeoff is usually done for minimum control speed (v-mc) considerations which among other things allow you to reduce V1.
    Anyways, thanks again for you walkthrough of the system.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep - i didn't explain it well at all. I actually recorded a much better description, but after two people came to the door in a row, I gave up and started again - and of course it wasn't as good the second time around. You would be surprised to learn how many times that happens.

    Something to note: 146 pilots rarely use MCT for climb. With a reasonable flex temp, MCT will command higher engine speeds than takeoff! The 146 has so much extra performance on tap, usually pilots will set climb power using N1 SYNC. The rule of thumb I follow in the sim is 88% N1 at sea level to 5,000ft, then add 1% N1 for each 5,000ft (10kft = 89%, 15kft = 90% etc)

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure there are some bugs lurking in the TMS in the sim - I'm sure they will get ironed out though. I had the TMS cut the engines near the end of the takeoff roll yesterday - without enough runway left to abort... very, very odd. I went back through everything I did, and it made no sense.
