Even the closest in Mustangs would still be 1,000 feet above the bomber stream, not flying through the formation. The second he P-51's spotted enemy planes, they'd ditch the drop tanks, the P-51's started out in "Finger Four," formation but later changed to Line Abreast. This just hurts.

    Band of Brother’s success is due to its reasonable scale. In budget, timeline, characters and story it’s all much easier than Pacific or Masters of the Air. You can properly tell the story of easy company in 10, one hour episodes. You can’t tell “With the Old Breed”, “A helmet for my Pillow”, and “I’m staying with my boys” in that same scope. You can’t tell the story of the bloody hundredth in a few episodes. A mini series is a great tool to follow a couple dozen people over a story spanning a year or so. Not hundreds of people over nearly 5 years.

    • @arkwill14
      @arkwill14 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      EXACTLY! I think they failed to understand why _Band of Brothers_ was successful. Because they stayed with one relatively small group of soldiers the audience got to know them and how they functioned as a unit. And because of that the combat scenes were all the more intense because the audience was invested in those characters. _The Pacific_ was a lot harder to follow as they jumped from unit to unit and many characters were in and out before viewers even knew anything about them. And _Masters of the Air_ went even further in the wrong direction.

      If we were shown a space battle from Star Wars + with bad CGI, it can't be excused because we weren't there.
      And which "event participants" are you talking about? If they were, they may have described it as "chaos", which the director took as his own.

It’s comical to even disregard the entire show as everyone is doing over special effects. Practice on that short attention span of yours and sit still and watch the show.

    Haven't seen the whole thing, but CGI as of 2024 seems to rely on overcast, twilight or glare and dirty windows. Scott's Napoleon had similar low light or visual impairment. Also there seem to be too many aircraft in one place. It looks dramatic, but the fighters would be more spread out. The bomber crews felt that they were being used as bait because the P-51s were freed from close escort of the bombers and turned loose to hunt Luftwaffe fighters.

    • @CasualClinkz

      Not low light it's daytime. But you're right with the escorts. Tho the fighters would have to keep pace with the bombers so for some of the time.they were in fact close by. Also some of this is filmmakers choice to get the point across since most people don't know shit about this

    No one can doubt the bravery and sacrifice of these airmen in the war. I grew up in the 1950s and must have built a plastic or balsa model of 20 different types of WW2 airplanes.
    But:
    It is well known that the strategic bombing of Europe was a waste of lives and treasure. It accomplished virtually nothing to shorten the war. Hitler's armnamen minister, Albert Speer said so in his memoirs and the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survery after the war agreed. If you think about the little damage done to London by German bombesr or from the buzz-bombs and V2s the message is the same. Winning a war takes "boots on the ground" and control of natural resources. All that the bombing does is make people angry. Ask the Ukranians.

    • @BarryAllen__1A23
      @BarryAllen__1A23 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes because Albert Speer definitely did not have a bias of his own and definitely did not just make stuff up to make the allies in the bad light. Whether you like it or not strategic airstrikes heavily impacted the war. Factories, oil rigs and bridges being destroyed will severely hurt the military capability of the enemy. Bombs can easily be manufactured, while destroyed roads and other infrastructures takes a significant time and resources for the enemy slowing them down even further. Aerial supremacy is still an integral part of every military in the world. Boots in the ground is why the eastern front was bloody and aerial supremacy is why the western allies have significantly lower casualties than the soviets

    Target Berlin

    Berlin, the capital of Germany, was selected as a prime target for the AAF, not only for its industrial importance, but because it was believed the Luftwaffe would react in force to defend it, suffering heavy losses in the process. The first attack was made on March 4, 1944, but only 29 bombers reached target because of weather.
    Two days later, 660 AAF heavy bombers reached Berlin in the face of tremendous opposition; 69 bombers and 11 escorting fighters were lost -- the AAF claimed 179 German planes destroyed. The AAF returned on March 8 and 462 bombers, escorted by 174 P-51s over the target, bombed the Erkner bearing factory; again, the Luftwaffe lost heavily.

A terrible thing that needed to be done. And gladely has been done. But probably also children and women died in these explosions. For my taste the heroic uplifting music choice at the end is bit too optimistice forgetting the cruelty of war. The Mustang was certainly the best escort fighter, i.e. able to first fly 400 miles and still have enough fuel to dog fight and get back home. However, and staying in Europe, once engaged in a dog fight, the FW190 and the Spitfire Mark9 and beyond were superior. The Spitfire Mark14, was the best pure dogfighter of WW2.

    • @LuisSoto-ho5fw
      @LuisSoto-ho5fw 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thing about the Mustang was: While there was always some other aircraft that could beat it in any particular area, it did it all almost as good as any of them, close enough that often the pilot/tactics made up the difference - plus it did it all with those long legs. In other words, the best dogfighter, best ground attack fighter, best interceptor, "best-whatever-other-category-you-can-think-of" may have been another aircraft, but the P-51 could be a close second in all categories, but with enormous range - that made it the best all-around fighter.

      @janandersen8735 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LuisSoto-ho5fw Good enough and the legs to get there? Sure. But that is not always the argument. The biggest variable with the Mustang is that by 1944, most of the Luftwaffe was made up of green and undertrained pilots, and that made a big difference. Nonetheless, one on one, at 10,000 feet, full tanks, the Spitfire Mark 14 (and a couple of later Marks) would be the favorite against any other plane. Note: I say this even though my old man flew Mustangs in the late 1940s before transferring to jets. He loved the plane.
