Bassirou Faye: From prison cell to president of Senegal | DW News

  • You may not have heard about him a year ago, but Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to become Senegal's next president. The former tax collector who was released from prison a week before elections, is destined to be Africa's youngest democratically elected leader at the age of 44. He was backed by mentor and main opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, who was barred from the race.
The surprise win in one of Africa's most stable democracies was largely driven by young voters hungry for change. Faye has promised to tackle corruption and bring reforms to Senegal's economy, and its currency, but he also faces a series of major challenges.

"How much experience does he have?". Are you questioning the will of the Senegalese people? They have elected their president, not anybody else's... If it is a mistake, they will elect another next time... For now, all Western media must stop questioning what Africa decides for itself... PERIOD.

I have never heard anyone call him mister clean even if he is indeed Mr Clean. The reason is not just because he’s coming with debts and not so much assets as said in the vidéo but because his incorruptibility is known of all.
He worked as a tax a tax collecter for 15 years a position where it’s so easy to make billions; many of his collegues are billioner but he’s came out after fifteen years with debt

The emphasis on experience almost irritates me (and the statement only time will tell how clean he is) does not sound positive at all. Without been given the opportunity how would one become experienced. And been a president requires a charismatic leader, how many experience leaders have failed to lead their country on a development path or even maintain a simple democratic environment. This is national development he vows to create the environment, let the nation come as one and make the country a better place. He can't do it alone the experience expatriates need the environment and the goodwill to deliver for a better country. So, the length of experience count but not a preferred requirement here. Remember been a president kind of portrait indirectly heading all the various ministries in the country, and it is impossible to have an experience in all does areas, you need expert guidance in most of these areas to make inform decisions.
