The best tip I've seen regarding procedural generation was that the things generated has to make sense as a system. So for instance a river. Rivers dont just appear at random. They are caused by erosion from water trying to go from high to low. So you want to generate your landscape and then use errosion to generate the river. THAT will generate realistic rivers that will feel authentic to the player (And as an added bonus, if you get errosion REALLY good, it'll also generate your caves for you.)
Game Wisdom brings up the idea of a racing roguelike and in less than a minute, Tarn half-pitches an idea for an Excitebike roguelike. The gears are always turning with him (no pun intended) I love it.
The discussion on Permadeath reminded me of a funny quip made on the old CoolGames podcast where they imagined a game that demanded all your social media passwords, and if you lose, it reveals your darkest secrets and causes "Social Permadeath"
There have been multiple geologists who said they first got interested in the field trying to figure out dwarf fortresses geology that led to a lifelong interest , study and career
Tarn, I replaced my old Bose QC35 II noise cancelling headphones with a pair of Sony's and they're collecting dust. I'm happy to send you my old pair if you want them.
"i have listeners that played for hundreds... "and who are like, 'what's that?' and people like me who have played for hundreds of hours and i'm still like, 'wtf is going on here and i have no idea what i'm doing but i'm doing it more tomorrow." :P
I actually wouldnt. I think both games have very different philosophies and I think they are both better off being their own thing. I dont want the one ultimate game, I want a variety of great games. If it was just one ultimate game, theres really nothing left to do when eventually one gets bored.
Loved the way Tarn's eyebrow went up when you said "DF is the gold standard"
He's so humble, I love it
He was a great guest to talk to, and I hope I can get him back on for more on procgen
seems like such a great guy
31:38 The stress system works perfectly fine. It causes stress. :D
Well well well. Hello!
Welly welly welly well! To what do I owe the extreme pleasure of this surprising visit?
I’m so SO happy to hear any and all wisdom from Zach and Tarn!!! 🎉

Tarn forgot to mention that besides the LNP, how informative the dwarf fortress wiki is.

50:05 it is very cool Tarn, thank you

Send him an email, he'll be much more likely to see it

my dream is to see DF + rimworld dev team collaboration to make the game, that will be the thing in my lifetime
well ironically enough... when it comes to “team” they do have other people but when it comes to programming the “team” is tarn and tynan respectively
I'm here from the future. Check out the steam version. It menaces with steam.

Magma ball spell? I would love to be able to use this outside of combat to create obsidian.
Which tileset is this one from the thumbnail picture?
that was just grabbed as one of the screenshots when searching for Dwarf Fortress
@@Game-wisdom ahh yes, thanks for the answer. I've seen this same print before but never got to know which tileset is that.
@@Oruzinho I'm pretty sure that tileset is from the steam graphical update that they are doing and is not released yet.
I meant the one from left image. The right one is the unreleased steam version, as you've said.
i know it’s been a very long time since you posted this, but i believe it is Bitlands, i do not know if it has been updated however
take my money already
Nice!
Praise the Miners!
