Finding a word and say it has no meaning is requires knowledge and Bhakti above Thiyagaraya. Both do not exist with this woke!! So clinching to raaga and then use words such as ங்கோத்தா, ங்கொம்மா would be enjoyable to TMK and no one else!!!
Here is my humble thought : I understand the appreciation and ingenuity from TM K on the swaras pattern. Having said that what probably he is not getting it is you cannot just fit swaras for purpose and leave bhakthi / sahityam out . I would always think in the experience that the great Tyagarajar is having as he is immersed in Lord Rama, the sahityam and swaram occur naturally without a human effort.. This is what Ilayaraja the maestro says too. It's a different dimension all together
He is simply saying do not overemphasis on sahithya at the cost of music. This kind of splitting or words and stretching or syllabubs / aksharas is bound to happen when you apply music to lyrics. If you distort the music to fit in lyrics, the music is lost. Whether it's bhakthi or romance, carnatic, folk or western, that's how it it.
Hypothetically, if the MMA denied TMK the SK because of his politics then people would've thought that the Academy subscribes to another political cohort antagonistic to TM. Then the righteous question would've been, "Does the Academy only honour Hindu Nationalist artists? " Then MMA would've been left with egg on its face. Ideally, I'd like every competent artist to be honoured regardless of, and sometimes despite, their politics, when their time comes because we live in a free society.
This is my view and I am not forcing any one to accept it. If Thyagarajar focused only on sahityam/bhava/meaning he would have just written slokas. Also if you think his song accidentally fitted a raga that is also not true as he consciously chose the rags. His creation is the mix of both world. Also the ragas he chose also were not invented by him. Nobody knows how he sang. He could have compromised sahityam for swaras or the other way. This fight is unnecessary. Also I don't think people come to concerts were coming to realize Rama😀. If that is the case they will go to Ramar temple. If one can fit words and meaning to ragas and swarams that's great. Most of the instrumentalist will never worry about the sahityam. You can never sing along with them and you find great people in that category too.
Thelugu language never accept breaking of words to suit raga. Hence atleast the telugu kritis/keertanas must be sung without breaking words ie. Keeping in view the Sahitya. Sahitya is more important. I give you example. There is one famous hit song which was sung like" kaunaya ke nigahon me chamak jag. uthi, dilke soye huye taron mekhanak jag uthi." Actually it should be like" kaun aya ke nigahon me chamak jag uthi dil ke soye huye taron me khanak jag uthi.
One's dedication towards one's SaPaSa is one's Bhakti. Adherence to Shruti Shuddham, Raga Shuddham, Gamaka Shuddham, and Pathantara is one's Bhakti. One's parishramam is one's Bhakti. There was an incident when Maharshi Devendranath Thakur was explaining the differences between Advaita and Vishishtadvaita to Anandachandra Vedantavagisha, and he said, "You people say Bhakti is a Rasa. No. Bhakti is not a Rasa. Rasa itself is Bhakti. " We need to be wary of individuals who are trying to turn Sabhas that patronize our intangible cultural heritage into some sort of religious organization. Piety is a private matter. Culture is a community activity. And the community in question here needs to become more inclusive and pluralistic.
Carnatic classical traditional music stands on pillar bhakthi. Without bhakthi it is meaningless and absurd..If one wants just feats of notes can better to choose pop. Or any other western style.
Without Bhakti Carnatic music will be soulless! I am a low caste Hindu but I find his speech arrogant! He might as well sing paeons on Periyar, Broom and a Palm Tree as he equates these with Rama in the MUSIC ACADEMY!
What TMK saying is correct. This is evident when people listen to instrumental classical music like violin or Venu. However, for a vocalist there is an advantage adding a diffrent flavour to it by blending sahitya. It is up to the artist to keep it or leave it. When it comes to pancha ratnam, people still remeber it today mostly because of the lyrics. Only some artists may know it fully by music. So in Indian classical music, the sahityam was considered as signature of the composition. This need to be kept in mind.
Breaking the words of content for the sake of grammar is not a new thing. Thiruvalluvar has done it way back. TMK has not understood that and talking as if he has discovered something new. you can't leave the content while reading Thirukkural or Kamba Ramayanam. That is language grammar and this is music grammar. The issue is not between sangeetham and sahityam of music. But whether sahityam is part of sangeetham at all. Especially when we come across the so called greatest music compositions (Symphonies) of Western music without any lyrics. In our classical music also original compositions have been made especially by Nadhaswaram players (Thiruvaduthurai Rajarathnam and others). Film musicians like Ilayaraja have composed music without lyrics (How to Name It, Nothing but wind and Back ground music in many films based on pure music grammar). Here, in Classical music, Vocal musicians (not music composers) are getting prominence because of the fact that the original compositions are based on sahityam (mostly religious content). The universal opinion about music is that it does not (and should not) rely on any language, as Music is a language by itself. Good music should be able to express all feelings and expressions without the help of any lyrics.

According to Carnatic scholars like Ranga Ramanuja Iyengar, in his KRITHI MANIMALAI book each first letter in his first Pancharathnam - Jagadhanandakaraka, Thyagarajaswami, Rama Ashotram 's first letter comes. KAZHUDHAIKKU THERIYUMA KARPOORA VASANAI.
