  • OR should I call it Metal Master ?
In this Vlog I showcase a 4+0 circuit I built and set the stage for the shape of things to come.

long time player/gearhead here. Picked one up +/- 30 yrs ago cuz it was cheap and it was calling my name.... plus there was always a buzz around that they'll give Marshalls a run for their money. Sorry it was a PA but I always thought it could have possibilities. I've built a few (5e3 etc) but don't have the knowledge to go that far. I kranked it up a few days ago and it's being very impressive. Total Stock. I don't use nearly the dirt that you do but I think yours is very impressive. Seems that 4 inputs alone is a start to finding places to mod, 4 preamp tubes plus I never had a KT88amp and have always been curious. I don't have the ability to attempt an undertaking like this could be, but I do have a long time, kinda conservative, amp tech close by. Great video

      Thanks!
Yeah the amps are commonly chopped and modded cause they do have a lot going for them to work with. I have a video series where I turn it into a Marshall Jubilee.
Check my playlists for "Project Jubilee" if you're interested.

I have a 1971 YVM-1 Voice Master which I picked up for $130 over 20 years ago. It's been modified a clean bass or guitar amp. I add a distortion pedal for a killer sound! Great Video!

I wonder what was done to it, doesn't need much to be clean.

Wow I've known & owned one for its mid & warm tone but this one sounded like knives! But it must be that it's going through the cell

Oh no, the configuration I had going on here was def harsh. Which is why I tore it down in later videos, it wasn't that good, but I figured I'd show it before I did.

Cool preamp design. Have you thought about moving the tone stack back to the earlier stages? The wiring would need to be pretty meticulous to avoid noise early in the signal path. I've got a second bass mate on the way. You've inspired me to chuck a couple of extra small bottles in there to find out!

Fresh tubes are always recommended. Or just different tubes, even if you already have good ones.
An earlier tone stack doesn't work for this topology for the most part. You kind of need it at the end to do it's job.
Earlier it'll will influence the distortion texture, allowing you to tweek the subtleties, but would be unresponsive for over all EQing. Like I suppose there can be benefits, I've toyed with the idea of some form of tone control to shape the distortion texture, but not really a full tone stack.

@@DATT That's what I'm after. Parametric gain vs equalization.

@@jamiemascola6614 It'd be quite experimental. One might question, if it was a good idea, it'd be more common.
The other problem that just occurred to me, the insertion loss would mess up the gain structure, you'd need yet another gain stage for recovery.

I just found one of these for $249 and you’re making me very excited to monkey with it.

    Tweak a Fender PA 100. :)

Well, I'd have to get my hands on one, but I probably could. I have other amp projects coming.
Here in Canada, Traynor are common. They didn't have a name, so we could get them for cheap once upon a time. Anything vintage Fender still held a value way higher than their worth.

Jcm's sound like crap! All Marshall & fender (same) with the exception of jtm & super reverb 🤔 well im a miniscule minority I know!

I don't think they sound bad, but I do think they are over rated.
