Traynor YGL-3 - Can’t believe it’s still a SLEEPER!

- Classic and Amazing 1970s Canadian 100W Tube Combo that still can be had pretty cheap. This is a 100W 2x12 and 4xEL34 (6CA7) tube amp. Many of the tubes are vintage Mullards. I'm playing it using a 2010 Ginson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty R7. Close mic is a 548 and room mic is an M160, both 60-70s. I borrowed this amp from Simon at Musikbörsen's music store in Gothenburg: www.musikborsen.se
My friend had one of these. Nobody wanted to carry it up the stairs.. Traynor and Garnet - Canada's two great contributions to tone.

Check out Phaez Amps, small boutique builder with great prices. I have met Randy in person, great guy and let me try 6 different tonal amps and said he would tweak it if I knew what I was looking for. I settled on a Pasadena, has a brown sound to it but cleans up really nicely.

Love those huge Hammond transformers! Canada has some great transformer manufacturers and amp builders: no American hype just quality.
Traynor amps are like a Canadian secret. Underrated, great quality amps still built today in Canada at reasonable prices.
It's the reason I bought one here in the states, highly underrated amplifiers. They're at music shops everywhere in Canada, yet fining them across the border is nearly impossible...fortunately a music store over an hour drive away carried a few brand new. Thank God for their Reverb storefront telling me they had them in stock.
By far the best amplifier I've owned (YCV40WR) and it hits well above it's price. Everyone who plays through it likes it.
A few years ago Traynor re-issued the YGM-3, handwired, Hammond transformers and an Alnico speaker, for less than $1K cdn. Sounded amazing, kick myself for not buying it. Same spec in Fender or Vox it’s almost 3x the price.
The modern traynors are not great though
I would say they’re better than most in the price range.

best amp i've ever played. heavy tho'. clean and clear and loud. when it crunches it's pure vintage tone- clear with punch. the reverb is really the key, vast and clean, without making it distant or muddy. the tremolo is very good too, very like a princeton trem. i've played it without having to take it in to the shop since 1997, it's 2023 now.
i only cranked mine once, and it literally knocked some little nicknacks off of a shelf. but that brief crunch was killer. the preamp distortion in channel 2 is not very usable imo. the reverb is the best i've ever heard, and i own a fender standalone reverb unit. you gotta have that long tank.
I still have mine that I bought new in 1973. Tried it next to a Fender Twin Reverb and it sounded better for at least $100 less than the Fender. Replaced the speakers with EVM12L's and the amp was unbelievable. Got to old to move a 100 pound amp around so swapped them out for Celestion Vintage 30's and still sounds incredible with a drop of at least 20 pounds. Still my go-to amp for anything over 20-30 watts.

I had this amp as a teenager....was a great amp ... wish I still had it....
I worked at Yorkville around 1973 and both Hammond and Marsland were vendors and I was lucky enough to meet Pete Traynor a couple of times. Great development period for Canadian amps, I can recall a room within a room for testing loud amps. Around 12 x 12 feet it was suspended by chains inside the factory so the developers could run amps as loud as possible. We even had one of these YGL-3's with Fane speakers that must have weighed a hundred pounds and was loud as hell!

Naah, it's still a sleeper amp. Even after this video people ain't buying them. They tend be quite heavy and loud, and due to the way their speakers are wired you can't use attenuators with them either.
Changing speakers on them is a pain in the arse. You can't just pull out the speaker harness plug, there's no plug. In order to change speakers you need get in the amp, desolder the speaker cables and then replace the speakers.

@@geraldcalifornia5923 The speaker cables of that amp aren't connected to the amplifier using a TS connector. They are permanently soldered to the output of the amp. So you can't insert an attenuator between the amp and the speaker.

Over here in Canada this aint no sleeper. I have 4 traynor amps and they are just amazingly built. The ygl-3 is a great amp. The YBA-1 is a bassman, and the ygm-3 is a 20 watt amp with built in reverb and trem. They go for pennies and nickels around here.

I'm a drummer and collect amps. 3 Garnets and 2 Traynors: 72 Bassmaster and 69 Bassmate, no mods. They love different speakers and the recording studio. Have traveled from So Cal to Canada for amps. Worth every penny and nickle.
I have a Traynor Bassmate that I've been using for guitar. It has a single 15 inch speaker but I've been playing it through 2 twelve inch speakers. No reverb or tremelo. It has bass and high input jacks. I love the tone, I crank it up all the way and get a splendid overdriven tube amp tone out of it. The amp is very loud for only having 4 tubes. She is not for sale! Using a Stratocaster I can get a Hendrix tone out of it with beautiful feedback.
Good video Johan, congratulations for your channel. I own this amp, but I changed the speakers and I put some Jensen Tornado with Neodymium. I use the amp for clean tones, more like jazz. I kept the original speakers to keep its value, but now I can carry the amp, before it was like carrying a dead elephant. For distorted sound I also own a Traynor Bass Master and it was modified, now it's got the same circuit as a Marshall JMP 50 for a fraction of the price and it sounds amazing!!. All the best, Fede.
Thank you so much for this blast from the Toronto past, of the little shop that could on Queen street west. You can still find the old video of the owner of Traynor throwing an amp off of the roof of his store in the 1970s, then replacing the broken tubes and the beast comes to life. The Traynor mono block bass amplifier was the most successful and still used amplifier today. Either you had a Ampheg or a Traynor Mono Block in those days. Yorkville still has the Traynor name, services the products and makes some new Traynor products.

No! The price of these old Traynors have been climbing for a while as the forums have caught in to how good these are. Now they'll climb even more! Love these amps. The new Traynors are fantastic too.

The new Traynors don't get enough love. I have had a lot of different traynors and my YCS50H may be my favourite(paired with a diag 212 with Vin30s). Only one I didn't like much was the YRM-1. But I was playing it through a 410 full stack marshall meant for the mosfet series.
I've had many Traynor's in the last 50 years! Great amps! I like the little YGM-3 "Guitar-Mate" 20 watter that runs EL-84's. It's Not an 18 watt Marshall clone or an AC15 Vox. It is it's own creature. I've owned 5 of them! There's a few mods that can take them from really good to Great!

I have one of these, sounds like a ton of bricks! I found it in a garage sale for 40$, the luck of a lifetime! Honestly it’s too loud for my needs but I just can’t let go of it!
Gorgeous playing! I have one and I get the most JTM45 like tones out of it. With my Tele or 335 it sounds punchy and really peels some paint.

Hi from Montréal, Canada... I’m so happy you made a video about Traynor (although I thoroughly enjoy your Marshall and speaker comparison videos). I have a YCV80 (80watts tube 2x12). I just changed the speakers from Seventy80 to G12T-100 from a Fender DT-412 cab. I can get Marshall clean and fender clean sounds from that amp, very versatile. Cranking the gain Channel up until it breaks up a bit and throwing a Maxon OD808 in front of it creates such a sublime classic rock tone (AC/DC style).

I had a 1970 Traynor 65w modified bass amp head in the 90's.I got it as a dead stock and had all original parts.Comparing to a 2ch linked Plexie, I think that it had more middle, but it had a great classic rock sound.
I had a later model Traynor when they made a comeback and loved it. Gigged well, and could keep up with the other guitarist 1/2 stack Marshall. Shouldn't have let it go, but couldn't use it in an apartment! LOL
When I was really young a buddy and I had a pair of these and I'm pretty sure they never sounded as gainy- but also we were using distortion boxes and mostly home made speaker rigs. I'll never forget how deaf we'd be after practice.
I remember these knocking about still in the 1980s. Guy who owned a guitar shop swore by his. Gig with it as well.

I've had one of these for several years; purchased as a non working basket case but in A1 nick! Retensioned the output tube socket pins, reset the bias and it sprung to life (very loud) life! It's a Fender Twin killer! I was going to swap the speakers out... but they sounded so good I left them in there! Some Marsland speakers are crud... but it depends who makes them! Takes pedals well but sounds great with the master down and the volume up... or through a power soak for output distortion! Traynor is definately a sleeper... so "shuuuuush!"
I have a ‘73 Traynor YGM 4 Studio mate. It had 4x8” marsland speakers. They sounded so squishy. I put a 12” Weber silver bell speaker in to replace them. Boom! Tone to the max. I paid $300 CDN for it.
Walked into a music store in Bracebridge ON and guy had a 1966 Traynor YBA-1 on the floor. Guy said “it doesn’t work”
I flipped it over. There was no fuse in it. “How much” I said. “$100 it’s yours” he said.
You can’t beat Traynor for value. A plexi/bassman clone for $100 CDN.

great amps, I have an old YBA-3 100 watt head, keep it around as an alternative to the Marshalls, sounds very similar to this amp, sounded great for bass too. Nice demo and playing, thanks for sharing Johan, stay safe!

Modern traynor amps are great too. I had a YGL 50 and its was a great sounding amp but I sold it becuase it was darker than I prefer my amps. But the tone was killer if you like a darker sound. The overdrive was basically a darker version of the jcm800 tone. The cleans were the amps strong point . Much better than modern marhsall cleans very full rich and deep cleans and the reverb was perfect but I rarely play clean so the amp just did not suit my needs. If the overdrive had been brighter it would have been a keeper. I tried many different tubes and extension cabinet combinations but could never get the overdrive where I wanted it but for someone with diffrent tastes the amp would be perfect. They are quite affordable as well

Its amazing, and strange it isn't more expensive.
Paid £165 for mine several years ago... but was not working (see post above). This is a monster of an amp and will leave a F/Twin in the shade. It was made to survive the hire trade and was bomb proof! If you paid under £500 for a working unmolested one then you got a bargain... these are only going ^ The only down side is the weight... this is one 'heavy' amp and the center lift handle is a joke (I bet Peter Traynor and the boys had a laugh about that! lel) The Hammond transformers are huge and way over engineered... they could power the National Grid lel... Crank this old girl up and its a physical experiance with the amount of air it moves!

Really great amp, your video comparing several amps at full volume heavily contributed to my decision in buying one of these killer amps. Hearing it along side other great heads through the same cab really let it shine. I managed to get mine for $550CAD fully stock tubes and all. I see they can still be found between $600-800 (outside of reverb). I can't say that everyone should go grab one but, they should at least consider checking them out should one pop up nearby. It might really surprise you.

Canadians seldom recognize what we have here in this country, Traynor is a company that produced public address systems and we have not fully recognized that they produced great sound systems of all types. Yorkville is pretty much level with Marshall and Fender from this demonstration. Perhaps they should have spent more on promotion? Your thoughts.

Yeah, success for brands often cones down to exposure with famous artists. Many manufacturers have what it takes in terms of tone.
Nowhere is Johan's point demonstrated more clearly than the disaparity in perceived value between Traynor and Garnet, another Canadian amp brand most famous for Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and BTO's patronage.

Those are Marsland speakers made in Kitchener/waterloo Ontario just down the road from Toronto where Yorkville was, Marsland made alnico and ceramic speakers for all traynor products

Mine has the original Utah speakers in it my amp is a Traynor yrm-1sc 4x10 combo 45w not all Traynor's came with Marsland's in them some came with Utah's and other brand's of speakers too...
@@jjembleton I got this amp from my best friends father he bought it brand new in 74 it came from the factory with Utah's if you look on the site black velvet i think it's called it will tell you that Traynor used all kinds of speakers in their amp's but mostly Marsland...

It's a sleeper, yes. But they for over (10) years now, they do fetch big money for a clean one. One of the loudest and best sounding bass amps that I've ever heard. It was probably just made for guitar but one could hear that beauty (4) blocks away.
The YSR-1 is also a cool Traynor head. I have been using Traynor amps for about 35 years now. They're extremely well conceived amplifiers that have always been sleepers. I still see them at shockingly low prices. I actually prefer my 68 YBA-1 to almost any plexi amp. I actually sold a 67 JMP 50 after I bought the 68 YBA-1-I had no qualms about it. Marshalls have a tendency to mush out whereas a Traynor stays aggressive without getting mushy sounding.
I have never owned a YGL-3. They always seemed like a cross between a Super Lead and a Twin Reverb with a Vox tremolo circuit thrown in.

good on you having a mark3......... most people are to scared and risk adverse to consider this...... i found my combo after it sat on craigslust for a year.... finally i got it for 175...... true story, no body wants these anymore....... like no body wants a 70's twin reverb anymore but even worse :). personally, i look everyday at the the traynor section on c-list :). they make a mini super reverb w/ 4x8's :). look for that one also

You should take a look at the YCV40WR! It's the best amplifier I've owned (and currently own) and it's great for that classic rock overdrive. It's got plenty of headroom on the clean channel and the separate EQs is a great feature. Highly underrated amplifier and it's priced fairly well compared to other 1x12 40 watt combos, ie blackstar ht40.

I've owned about 5 of these, and currently own one low-mile '72 with all the original Mullards except someone changed out the 6CA7s for Telefunkens... when I see them for sale I am always tempted.
The speakers are Canadian-made Marslands. Sometimes they sound amazing, other times, not. Yours sound like good ones.

Had my MK3 since the late 90s. Heavy? Yes. Loud as Hell? Also yes. Copy of a Twin Reverb but with EL84s like a Marshall? Yep and yep. Built like a tank with bucket loads of tone, I got mine in a pawn shop for $150 in 1996 dollars.

I've been waiting for you to do this amp for so long! You did a 70's amp shoot out a while back with one and the traynor really impressed me so I searched out a bunch, found a twin version ygl-3 that I love, and a then found a ygl-3 head and original yf-12 4x12 cabinet, now I'm a traynor convert, just got a traynor studio mate 4x8 alnico and love that amp incredible cleans my fender and and marshals are just collecting dust, if you send me your email I'll send you some photos

Love mine. Using it to play DOOM/sludge/post-metal. Amazing with all pedals I have thrown at it. Playing it through Eminence Swamp Thang and want 2 15inch speakers to complement. The ST are 102dB, what speakers can you recommend Johan?
Vintage Traynor amps from the 60s and 70s just rule for construction quality. Which is why many still survive today. They've got their own sound that falls somewhere between Fender and Marshall. They are quite bright in general, and can by very strident with single coils. Modern Traynors are more of a mixed bag. Some models sound good, but build quality and reliability have been seriously compromised im recent decades. They use good materials, but their manufacturing processes and QA standard went the Yorkville route after Traynor was absorbed into the whole Jack Long conglomorate.
The vintage models are also insanely loud. Even 30W combos like the YGM3 are positively deafening when cranked.

The early 70s models came stock with Philips 6AC7s and 7025s in the preamp section
BTW, these are modeled after a Fender Twin and the YGA's are a Marshall with a few different component changes. You will find a lot of these with the yellow Iskra/Phillips "mustard caps".

Just by seeing that power transformer you can believe it probably can develop some respectable output power and decibels as well.
I have one, the power transformer is almost as big as my head.
the speakers in mine had square magnets on the back not Jensen's i think they said cts on them the cones had black dots on them best amp ever

does the master volume work on both channels? i believe on the mark 3 it only works on the 2nd channel
