Indeed! He tended to skip that line in many renditions I've seen/heard, simply replacing it w/the "I'm so lonesome" one. Didn't take away from the impact of his performance one bit, just something I noticed recently. What a gift to music this man was! Definitely did Hank proud, that's for sure.
Indeed, he does the best cover I've ever heard but it bugs me that he changed the lyrics. The verse about the moon should be, "The moon just went behind the clouds to hide its face and cry." Still he had such a great voice and it's very sad he is gone.
Saw him perform this song at night outdoors w/ trees dripping spanish moss all around in Baton Rouge '75. This is exactly how he sounded, his voice reaching the starlit canopy & echoes there still. Best song by him ever & best singer for it period.
This rendition touches the very essence of sadness. Hank Williams was such a very sad soul. A great writer and singer who only wanted to play and relax…not he pushed into the limelight by money grubbers. Thomas does a great rendition here.
In 1 of my English classes. We had a substitute teacher. There was a turn table with country records. 1 was Hank Williams album with song on it we played because a friend of mine said it was her favorite song. We played much dismay of the class. I sang along with the record. Pissed off most of the class. I didn't care

Sometimes sadness runs so deep that nothing can really touch it. But this song comes close…
Best version ever
Not even remotely close, Nobody could sing it or feel it like Hank Williams.
A great song; it's hard to beat Hank Williams and Del Shannon, but this B.J. Thomas version is my favorite.
A music legend that never got the credit he deserved, so goes life I guess . His voice is hauntingly unforgettable ! None else like him!
As others say, brings me to tears every time. Miss my husband dearly.
Even after all these years, this song and his voice break my heart.
God has a plan I lost mine of 50 years last June 11th Be strong Love thanks
For some reason this song and this version really makes me sad but at the same time it's great. Mind you I just can't help listen to it.
Another one of his greatest songs.
Such an awesome voice!! Rest in peace brother.
The best line in this song. Is when the moon just went behind the the clouds to hide his face and cry. Priceless

The silence of a falling star, lights up a purple sky, and as I wonder where you are, I'm so lonesome I could cry...

Every time I hear this song I cry.
He sings it better than elvis
In most cases - almost an impossibility - however in THIS case - I agree.
many of BJ's recordings have the same back up singers as Elvis--the Jordanaires
