In my opinion, sometimes you just can't beat the classics (I'm an oldie at heart). And I think artists just recognise how good they are and either record them to bring them back, or have just run out of ideas that could possibly compare. I'd like to think it's the first one more often than not, but the world today is all about profit.

The choices for current years will definitely change in the future I believe. Songs that rule the chart aren't always the most remembered. Like 1971 - Stairway To Heaven never even reached number 1 but is the most remembered now. Would be fun to see which songs are remembered in the future from our current generation.

This really makes me think about the 'it was better back then' effect. In fact, all the music in this video is VERY good in very objective metrics, like complexity, presence of other instruments, cool rythms and stuff. Perhaps all the good stuff remains, and we forget the bad so we tend to think that before it was best. However, we are exposed to ... let's say ... not memorable music of only our era, so it is natural to think that it was better before, while it really wasn't.
    Just some thoughts lol

    • @lucasgerosa4177

Not to mention people tend to grow up listening to songs of their time, and learn to like it. After they get old, the music just isn't really the same as the ones they learned to like because music changes over time. Everyone says the music from before their age is old-fashioned and boring and music from after is just bad.

It’s because they aren’t real drums lol. They are just put on to a midi keyboard and spliced up so each beat falls exactly on the beat. Back then, it was real people playing the drums so it obviously wasn’t completely on the beat, because humans aren’t computers. Even when real people play drums now, they are usually highly edited in post production so they are perfectly in time
Disclaimer: I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with this. Each decade has a new technology for music and every single artist takes advantage of it to make recording easier. Like when artificial double trackers were introduced in the 60s, all the bands used it because it made it significantly easier to double track vocals

I was fairly surprised at how many of those older songs from the 20's and 30's have made a rebirth into today's music. It's not uncommon for songs of today to start with a different sounding version of something that's been out there for 90+ years. We just don't recognize it for the most part because the originals aren't something we'd have heard.

The Beatles is a very interesting band. Given that they recorded and published well over 200 songs one would think that they existed for a quite long time, but the band existed "only" for a mere 10 years. And not only did the band exist only for 10 years, during those years it changed quite drastically. It started as an archetypal 1960's rock&roll boy band, and ended as an anti-war hippie music group, and the outwards appearance of the members changed accordingly (eg. you wouldn't believe that John Lennon from 1964 is the same person as John Lennon from 1969. His appearance changed completely, from a 60's pop-rock&roll band member to a full-on hippie).
This is in contrast with many other long-lasting bands, such as Rolling Stones, which has existed for 60 years and has not drastically changed in that time.

When I was in middle school I hyperfixated on the Beatles which were also my intro to pretty much any music from the 20th century and so for a long time I figured they were the norm. It just didn't occur to me that bands would stick around for more than a decade, much less that they'd keep doing their thing that whole time.

The first three years barely count as well, that was their early days when they had a different drummer and we’re a small time British band that occasionally went to Germany. The time between the British Invasion and their international fame as a boy band, through to their break up - was six years. In those six years they released the albums with some remarkable progression in musical style and distinct personalities of the members. Given the modern day fragmentation if media I don’t think there will ever be another Beatles - the absolute tidal wave of culture they unleashed in such a small time was very impressive.

It doesn’t pertain to sales charts or what people from back then remember. Considering that all music now is made accessible through the internet, coupled with the fact that pretty much everyone on the net can understand English, it’s no wonder that pretty much all the music here is Western. And even through sales charts and cultural influence, Western music just dominates. The best selling Chinese album only managed to reach 7 million sales according to a Wikipedia article. The best selling Indian album reached 55 million. While that does seem a lot, it only happened once, the artist who made that album didn’t even appear on the list again.

1939 - Somewhere over the rainbow. A dreamy song about making wishes. From a time when everything seemed so bright.
1940 - I'll never smile again. First proper year of WW2.
1941 - Boogie woogie bugle boy. The war is part of everyday life. May as well get used to it.
And then Edith Piaf having the first non-English song on the list. And Little Richard starting the rock'n roll craze. And whatever the heck Bobby Pickett was doing in 1962. And then how you know every single song from then on. And then the Beatles ruling the world for 3 straight years. And then how the right holders for Led Zep are a-holes. And then how crazy the '70s were, a music explosion. And how it took 50 years for someone to dance better than Fred Astaire. And how we're never gonna give up the '80s. And how the '90s are made out of nostalgia. And how the noughties were kinda meh. And how you can't really tell what happened to music afterwards.

For example Guns n Roses in 1988 are a precursor to grunge in the 90s, Lady Gaga in 2009 was a precursor to the super over produced dance tracks of the 2010s, YMCA in 1978 was the 70s groove becoming more cheesy and danceable like the 80s etc etc it's just so cool

Musicians (the industry, bands, artists, producers and etc.) are well aware of this and they just produce something creative, unheard and brand new at the end of a decade and create 'a new path' for the music industry in the new decade, thus claiming that they were the pioneers of 'that very genre' with producing such songs even before that decade came. Recording music, taking photos, and filming videos is truly a wonder. These musicians' names might become forgotten, but their voices and musical tunes are immortalized in the ears and heads of hundreds of millions of people.
As a younger person (someone who's in their 20s), it's crazy how many songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc. are recognizable to me. Like, even the ones that were recorded before my own parents were born. Good lord, I can't believe Elvis's music is 50s music. My goodness.

It's not through choice either trying to be like counter culture or whatever, but it reminds me of when I was younger and "older" people would have that ''you don't know what real music is" attitude. That's like me, rn. So weird how that happens. I have had no idea of who or what is popular music wise for like 5+ years at least.

Some people get nostalgic for a certain era and proclaim "that's when they made real music, they don't do that anymore".
But I think there's rather a constant increase in variation. In the early 1900s you could count genres on one hand. Now you could fill books with thousands of subgenres. Which is amazing, because regardless of your tastes, you can continuously discover new artists. For the future that will mean less shared "recognizable songs" though -- I have been so locked in my Spotify bubble that I don't even recognize anything after Despacito in this video.

I KNOW it's one of the reasons I've always loved this stuff! I have a book of #1 hits at home, and each song gets a picture of the artist/band next to it, and a page about the song and such. Even though all the pictures are in black and white, you can SO see the hairstyles/makeup/clothing and therefore attitudes, changing as you flip along through it.
And music? I'm not an expert, but I can tell right away if a song is ACTUALLY old or just written in an old style and recorded modernly. The old equipment just _sounds_ different.

The last 3-4 years just doesn’t really have the iconic feel to them. Maybe As
It Was. So it’s either two tings, not enough time has passed to have one iconic song stand out. Or not enough time has passed to view it as an iconic song. The only way is to wait 10 years and watch this video again and see if it stacks up.

    • @666meowth

i agree (except even As It Was doesnt feel iconic to me). probably because the way people consume music is changing -less reliance on stuff like radio / TV channels means not everyone is even listening to the most popular songs anymore. i've never heard Dynamite by BTS til now cuz kpop isn't my thing, and so i dont really end up running into it since i stopped listening to the radio ages ago

i agree, there's so much music out there; thousands of different genres. Since everyone consumes such personalized content now, there's no way for *one* song to make it to everyone's feed. Also hard for it to stand out amongst the billion others released each year. @@666meowth

10/10 comment, as someone who pretty much exclusively listens to older songs I didn't even know the most recent songs at all (2020--) but attributing that more to just being too recent is fair. I also think a lot of what makes a song iconic is hearing it a lot as a child and having that ingrained in you so its possible I will just straight up never think of these newer songs as iconic because I might only hear them once or twice a year.

I don't think music has necessarily gotten worse in the last 20 years, but it's stopped evolving. Look at any five-year period between 1920 and 2000 and you'll see huge shifts. Since 2000... all the same.
