Mr. Sullivan is a Champion......Had I suffered these disappointments, set-backs and problems...I'd be in a fetal position, on the floor, gulping Thorazine from the bottle....ufduh!
We feel your pain bro. Anyone who's turned a wrench on a performance car at any point has had to go through something similar. Sometimes it just is what it is and ya have to bite the bullet. Still though, we all love the content, your videography skills, explanations on how all this goes together, etc. Keep at it and maybe take the Cobra out to the track when she's finally finished and take your pain out on a set of tires and slamming gears.
This old man i used, to live next to, showed me a trick to keep the valves up in the heads. With the piston down, put some rope in the spark plug hole. THEN put the piston to TDC. The rope was like a clothes line rope. I used this technique on my Windsor engine. SHOUT OUT to Mark at Bullet Cams 💪 For the headers, i would have used Stage 8 locking bolts. Easy to get in and won't back out. I feel your pain, i recently smoked a few piston rings from ring flutter on my Ford Racing, aluminum 427 Windsor engine due to a poor flowing PCV system. Now i have to re-build. I've said it before and I'll say it again..."Hot rodding will kill us all one day. Either physically from the car or from disappointments." Good job bro💪🏆
I can only wish I had your skill set and patience. These modular motors do have a lot going on. Keep up the great work and videos really enjoy watching and learning from you.
Here's a little trick to use to keep the valve up. Very similar to the solder method of checking P to V or squish. Put a piece of thick solder wire in the spark plug hole and position between the valve your working and the piston top and rotate the crank to TDC. the wire is soft enough to squish (you can then measure that thickness to check P to V clearance which is normally done at 8* BTDC).
Next time, take a leak down tester and fill the cylinder with air and it will keep the valves shut. You can also use a small soft rope down in the cylinder and bring the piston to the top on each cylinder that you’re working on.
This sucks Chris, but I gotta say this is one of the reasons I love your channel. This is real life building cars. Hope your luck changes with this build! Finished product will be worth it!
My marauder blows white smoke on start up… clears out after idle for 1 min. Clean while running. I’m guessing vale stem seals 🦭, engine has 120 miles on it. So, should do timing chais and guides… thank you for the videos Chris, you are making the impossible seem possible.

Chris......you had ONE JOB!!! (clutch replacement) LOL!! I COMPLETELY felt your pain when you zoomed in on that toasted valve guide!! Hang in there brother.....we're all pullin for ya!!
One of the ways to not drop a valve is to put rope thru the spark plug hole and let the cylinder compress the rope and there you go. Valves stay in place and when done just back cylinder off and pull rope out and on to the next one.

You want to finger tighten and bottom out the studs, the loosen them 1/4 turn out so that they’re not making contact with the block when you go to install the manifold and nut for final torquing.
The frustration of pulling a motor out, putting the motor in and having to pull it back out again, is real... I had a 1977 Mustang 2 that had a v6. I pulled it out and put in a 302. The motor knocked as soon as it was started. I pulled it back out and took the motor apart. Somehow, some way, I left a piston rod bearing off when I built the motor. Ended up having to get another crank & rod. Put in all the bearings that time and then put it all back in. I was in a dark place as I was wrenching the motor apart and the effort to pull out and put in a 302 in a 77 mustang was way less involved than your 03.

Your videos with that mustang make a LS guy look even more like a genius for avoiding all the trouble that motor has put you through. With the size of it, the complexity, and the cost an ls probably could have been built 3 times with the time you have in that mustang.
This isn't typical of what these engines do. They're usually very reliable. Everybody always talks about how "complex" they are they aren't complex it's just different than what you're used to as a pushrod guy. These are just as reliable as ls engines if not more so when they're built correctly.
If that ls was built wrong it wouldn't be healthy either there's no magic in an ls quite frankly I'm tired of them being shoved down everyone's throats.

So I did valves to seals on my wife's 2GR which is a 3.5 Toyota engine and it was a pain in the ass because you have to pull the upper and lower oil pan The timing cover all the time and component has to come off The cam tower and the cams have to come out then you have access to do the valves now the ones I pulled off were very wallowed out and I think that's what you're seeing here That is normal wear over a long period of time they just get harder and harder and they basically don't function anymore and then the hole in the middle of the valve seal we'll just not seal anymore
You know if you fill the cylinder with air it holds the valve and it won’t let it lean to the side or fall down wen your trying to put the spring back on
Aftermarket PCV valves are a no no as the calibration is most likely not even close. OE is a must short of having heavy engine mods. Then the PCV valves are usually eliminated.
“She is loose as sleeve as wizard….” I lol’d. “Very nice!” Love the content brother. I recently bought a problematic 03 termi as well! Been following everything
I had a feeling after watching the first video that it was guide related. My 01 smoked exactly the same as yours. Mine was due to the number 8 coolant issue and no cooling mod. In my case, I never had a rebuilt engine last anywhere close to how long an OEM engine lasts so I went the route of putting an Aviator junkyard engine in and it's been flawless. Obviously, that's not an option for you with a terminator.
Wahoo new cobra video! Also I want you to know that your lightning has made me want one of my own and i blame you for my future financial choices. Best of luck with the cobra!
Im over here working on a few cars stressed out, meanwhile Chris has a small fleet of projects lined up lol! You're putting in some wrench time brother, good stuff. Keep it going!
Hey Chris, I just remembered that on my 03, it was an early model and one or both heads had a bad casting on the valve guides that would cause premature wear and smoking. I had to have both replaced under warranty. I'll try to dig and find the casting number for the revised heads.
I'm the owner of Wild Pony Mustang Ranch in Ocala Fl . Look at back cylinder closer you have piston skirt wear in that cylinder. if you need advice on this motor or any parts let me know

Sorry about your issues with this build but never back down my friend. If you have any ideas on the p.a.t.s system and can cause bugs in that system. Lmk if you can. Thankyou and best of luck.
Funny story but ford refers to the right side as the left side. Idk why but when installing cams it helps

Great video! I'm exhausted just watching you; I don't know where you find the time to do everything you do!
Never get enough done though it seems
I feel your pain Chris I’m doing a cobra now and man it’s a money pit your seals were fine I bet you have more than one cracked seat
Great video. I sincerely hope your hard work will be rewarded with a great running Terminator engine... beer well deserved!
Did Vavle springs on the old 03 Z06( got lucky the two didnt drop), Well done sir!
You know if you fill the cylinder with air it holds the valve and it won’t let it lean to the side or fall down wen your trying to put the spring back on
I felt the frustration so much there. When something goes very wrong then one small thing throws you over the edge
Almost took a Sawzall to that header
@@ChrisSullivan69 right, I lose my s*** then I’m like “almost lost my cool there”
Aftermarket PCV valves are a no no as the calibration is most likely not even close. OE is a must short of having heavy engine mods. Then the PCV valves are usually eliminated.
“She is loose as sleeve as wizard….” I lol’d. “Very nice!” Love the content brother. I recently bought a problematic 03 termi as well! Been following everything
Hope your luck is better than mine!
39:34 just before any of you get excited"... well shit i was hoping for some chop 😂
Love when you upload. Your channel deserves so much more attention. Your videos rock.
I appreciate that!
I like the UPR part that looks like the heads cooling mod.
27:47 I'm glad you're handy. Triple
Do it! Lol
That sucks mate but looks like you've got more content for us.
These are the latest revised heads with 9 thread spark plug holes. But I appreciate it!
@@ChrisSullivan69 No problem, I remember going rounds with the dealership to get them replaced was…….fun. 😂
I'm the owner of Wild Pony Mustang Ranch in Ocala Fl . Look at back cylinder closer you have piston skirt wear in that cylinder. if you need advice on this motor or any parts let me know
