Gurney Goo Review - Mutlisport Blister Prevention
Today I’m reviewing Gurney Goo for you. I discovered this useful blister prevention many years ago during my multi sport phase when I needed reliable blister prevention during hours and sometimes days of activity. My feet would get wet from crossing rivers or just from being hot and sweaty and I found it very easy to ignore niggling irritation until it was to late. Until I found this runners goo I was dealing with the after effects of skin rubbed raw, and despite all the products on the market, there really was nothing better during a long race than your own skin kept as pristine as possible.
Fast forward a number of years and I noticed that even with good general foot care I would still get blisters from time to time during mountaineering or glacier travel. It would happen most often when I walked long periods on the dry glaciers of late summer and autumn. During a conversation about mountaineering boots and foot care with my good friend Steve Gurney he reminded me about his name bearing Gurney Goo goodness. With a sample pack that he gave me I brought it to the mountain environment and set about experimenting. Chafing and blisters are a real nightmare in mountaineering, and it’s been the root cause of a number of failed attempts to summit with my clients.
Since I started using Gurney Goo in the mountain environment I’ve had just one blister. I wish I could say that it prevented all of them, but a problem with my boot was the source, not the general chafing or dampness that occurs on long climbs. The padding on the inside of the boot itself had worn through at the heel and this issue plus the fact that I was walking on hard, dry glacier with crampons on was a recipe for sore feet.
Otherwise, my experience has been very positive and I get way more confidence in having healthy feet for the climb by packing a small tube. I leave a 10ml bottle in my boots after I dry them to ensure I never leave home without it. The minimal weight and low cost makes it an easy one to bring on trips, and I now include a free tube in every client pack.
