I own a 2021 saloon, in silver with panoramic roof, it's a 2.0ltr petrol 190bhp it drives beautifully and the big surprise is the fuel consumption for the size of the car it easily returns 40 mpg.
Just my opinion but this car like most new cars are too expensive, overly engineered and not what the majority people want…affordable, reliable, safe, economical, electric…VW at its best when producing ‘the people’s car’…VW Beetle, Golf, Polo…VW are not alone with most other manufacturers doing the same…push cars at a public that don’t want them…car sales lowest for many years…I really like your reviews Btw…thank you😊
I think you answered your own popularity question, the price is killing these off. The VW badge had a kicking with emission fudging and some people would be put off by both these points. Good review Tish, happy new year
VW's pricing in the current market is just unjustified considering we tend to drive cars for approximately 4 years before we switch to the latest make. We just want comfort, tech and value for money.
its MORE the price then there mistake of there emission problem...i was going to buy one, but once i saw the price, heck, ill buy a AUDI before i buy this.!
to me this is one the best products VW put out in the last decade, design is on point, only the price is a problem, this car, especially the SB version IMO has the potential to become a future classic especially also the hot version, here in Croatia my local dealers is selling the basic diesel with a manual for a close to 60k euros, I mean come on, they are shooting themselves in the foot with those prices
I think it’s because that category of cars are mainly bought as company cars / fleet cars or financed. In that category, you’ll find that sales companies would rather put their sales managers in Audis, BMWs and Mercs because they have the premium image. Even wannabe premium brands like Lexus, DS (and even Kia with the Stinger) struggled because they don’t have the reputation. Genesis will have the same problem too. But 10-15 years ago, only real executives would drive the luxury brands, but because of financing methods, you’ll find more and more people being able to afford the payments of an executive performance car, which is why BMWs and Audis are bloody everywhere and no longer exclusive.
I really like these in both styles. But, the shooting break is that bit nicer than the saloon. It's true that there aren't too many on the road. I'd opt for a dark blue, if I was going to be buying one new. It's the same for other cars, depending.
That is a beautiful car and it’s EXACTLY what I’ll get once I have a child. I still have a place in my heart for a Jag Shooting Brake, but this is obviously more reliable.
I believe station wagons, shooting brakes or estate cars are great cars, cos they offer you car like driving dynamics which I think are better than crossover SUV dynamics, they are a bit more fuel efficient than crossover SUVs, and you get all the trunk space that you’ll need. However, station wagons are diminishing in many areas around the world as we speak, due to many car buyers suffering from a condition called anti-stationwagonism. Note that I did not make that term up; it was Ciro de Siena, a car reviewer from South Africa, and in South Africa, station wagons aren’t very popular. At the moment, there are only 5 station wagons on sale there, and the Arteon Shooting Brake isn’t one of them.
Looks really nice, but practicality wise vs my Leon ST and Passat Estate, no false / adjustable boot floor and levers in the boot for folding seats, and both considerably cheaper, know someone who works for VW, he had one recently, in black, which did look very smart, but the heater matrix went.
Nice review - so glad you chose the Arteon - beautiful looking car. Re the price, VW clearly know that they've overpriced it as if you go onto sites like Drive The Deal / Carfile etc - you can can get massive discounts of £8kish. With discounts like that - it's suddenly quite a bit cheaper than the BMW / Merc / Audi equivalent. (Remember, on the Arteon you get everything you'll need as standard - but have to pay more on the three premium brands).
You're absolutely right. While personally, I'd never buy a VW, seeing a full size D-class segment family car that's NOT a god-awful SUV is a pleasure. The SUV market is now saturated beyond measure, and every single one looks the same as every other, and not everyone likes SUV's! VM shot themselves in the foot with this pricing though (both barrels) - it almost encourages people to buy inferior SUV's.
These are quite unique due to the space inside. They are way bigger than the Merc CLA estate. The prices pushed people into other cars though which offer RWD and 6 cylinder engines. The Arteon is also a hatchback which could be considered less sophisticated than a saloon. Those blank switches round the gear shifter look terrible too. I would definitely consider one because of the interior space and running costs should be cheaper than rivals.
I have a 2021 sel premium and I love it. They should update to a more luxurious dash and center stack and wi fi. In America it should topped out at about 48,000. Offer more trims with front wheel drive. I wish they sold the R here. Every time I look at it I say WOW, it's so gorgeous. I plan on trading in for 2022/23 for new engine and transmission. VW IF YOU ARE LISTENING UPDATE INTERIOR AND ADVERTISE THE BEST LOOKING CAR SOLD IN AMERICA
Unlike Passat CC which was so so bought. Desirable but low sales figures on Passat CC. The Arteon was far too close premium German rivals. I’ve always been fond of the looks.
Personally I quite like the car, as you mention the shooting brake is pretty well equipped and with plenty of room. I have to agree with you on the price though. It seems a tad odd that VW have released a car that looks like it could encroach not only on BMW and Mercedes but also areas of the premium sister brand Audi. I would expect residuals to be hit more than the competition so maybe one of these could be more of a bargain if you get a chance on a used or ex demo model. I quite like it in the red colour, it stands out better against the sea of grey and black cars.
just bought 2020 model with 25k kilometers 190HP (not diesel) hatchback for 26K EUR and got 1K for my Passat 2010 with 500K kilometers.... best trade I ever made
Nice car but the interior didn’t look a lot different to my 2017 Passat! So much for progress. As you say it’s expensive, the Passat is better value but I suppose some people will pay the extra.
It's the price. For that price you might as well get a bmw or Audi, or an EV. I drive one and it's a really good car though. So smooth and comfortable, especially when driving electric.
Savage car............I think it's a mistake to benchmark it's price against the Merc CLA.........the Arteon is a much larger car and more premium IMHO
It’s a great looking car and the shooting brake style is very eye catching but it has got some serious Germanic competition and Badge snobbery still plays it part and of course recent VW bad publicity with the questionable quoted figures can’t of helped..it’s price tag for me is just too expensive for what you get.
The Arteon did not sell well here in the USA, largely I think due to its price -- and of course the consumer preference (sadly) here for SUVs. Because of VW's necessary price points here to compete, their cars and SUVs are much de-contented for the market, and even have different designs (larger and simpler for lower cost manufacture). The imports like the GTI continue to be comparable to the European versions but sales are slow, to the remaining enthusiasts who like a balanced hatchback -- a shrinking market (again, sadly!). I have always liked the Arteon but for a bit more, you can get an Audi. And it lacks the "bullet proof" reliability of Honda or Toyota. But, it looks better (IMO), and it has a better ride.
Why Phaeton or CC did not have the popularity they deserved? Great cars of Lyxury class with VW beand, some people just buy cars by its brands and popularity anc not the quality of the car indeed
Here's why ... the 2nd hand market for the VW CC is the better option, not much difference between late cc's and the Arteon, and in times of recession who can stump up those vast amounts of money ?.
I have a 2021 SEL Premium. It has been a piece of $hit since I bought it. Multiple electrical problems related to wiring harnesses. I’m now waiting for a new steering wheel because one of the wiring harnesses went bad. I’m dumping this car ASAP
The CLS Shooting Brake is the one to go for if you’re looking for used models. Far more premium than the Arteon and with a proper automatic gearbox unlike the VAG DSG. Such a shame Mercedes dropped the model
Please keep both hands on the wheel and better hand positioning! When will this continuing practice of reviewing whilst driving end? Driving, whilst it’s an everyday activity for many people, demands full attention, not looking at a camera and hand waving!
Yep, too expensive!! Its a passat in a pretty shell. I went through multiple models with a salesman the other day, and they were coming out at Audi/Merc/bmw prices & its too much. They should have priced it what it is and in the correct class, and they would clear up! #GoodbyeMondeo
Why aren’t these more popular? I think because American car executives are no way in sync with what’s in. They will allow a Fiat 500 (the ugliest non binary thing I’ve seen in my ) but they never allowed the scirocco, skyline, and many other worthy cars to be sold here in the states. It’s no wonder why American car companies are basically dead owned by non American entities. It’s sad that the American car companies sealed their own fate because they refuse to accept the new car culture for most of the late 80’s and 90’s and basically disregard other car company when the see a car the can never compete with.
Because they are crap. No one wants an impractical overpriced shooting brake and certainly not a diesel one or either a petrol these days. Wouldn't be surprised if they discontinue the Arteon soon.
i can understand why this car flopped, shooting brake? it's an ESTATE CAR please stop with the dumb marketing non sense. only people who work in marketing think these buzz words do anything. what was that about a exec car needing more than 150bhp? really why? are you telling me the 150bhp one cant manage to maintain 100mph on a motorway? also i noticed that pointless little flick you did where you knocked it into the manual selection side and then just knocked it back again why? the touch system sucks massivly! if you hold wv by the golf standard you should be telling people not to buy one they are the worst car i have ever driven. just no no no.
I drove one and found it... MEH... it was just bog standard a bit boring on the inside and an expensive Passat. There wasn't one thing that made me go WOW. Competent and boring.

The Skoda Superb does more for much cheaper prices. As for the R version at £56k, ridiculous like you say when you can have a 340i/d etc.

The Arteon shooting brake should come to the US but then again its price tag is a bit steep compared to its competition.
The only car a person can ever need
Arteon is not based on the Passat, wheel base is longer on the Arteon, same as Skoda Superb.
They are all the same platform it can be longer and shorter.
