  • In this episode, we uncover the extraordinary life of Lt. Col. Niranjan Singh Salaria, from his early days at Punjab Public School, Nabha, to his illustrious military career as a young Lieutenant and later as Lieutenant Colonel. Hailing from the district of Pathankot, Lt. Col. Salaria embarked on his journey of valor and resilience from his formative years at Punjab Public School, Nabha.
Known affectionately as “Chutt,” Lt. Col. Salaria earned this nickname due to his sharp talents in sports, especially boxing, and his remarkable agility on the gymnastics team. He was not only a standout athlete but also a natural leader, leading the school's boxing team to victory and receiving numerous accolades for his prowess on the sports field.
But Lt. Col. Salaria's true test of courage came during his tenure in the military. As a member of The Dogra Regiment, he etched his name in military history by leading the first-ever strategic foot column to the Siachen Glacier in April 1984. His daring expedition to physically occupy the Siachen Glacier proved instrumental in safeguarding India’s sovereignty in the region.
Despite the challenges and adversities he faced, Lt. Col. Salaria remained steadfast in his commitment to serving his nation. His unwavering resolve and indomitable spirit earned him the title of the “Hero of Siachen,” a testament to his extraordinary bravery and leadership on the battlefield.
Join us as we honor the legacy of Lt. Col. Niranjan Singh Salaria and shed light on his remarkable achievements that continue to inspire generations of young cadets at the Officer Training Academy. His story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army and a reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave soldiers to safeguard the nation’s security and sovereignty.
Don’t miss this riveting episode of MOR Talks as we pay tribute to a true hero, whose actions shaped the course of history and secured India’s victory in the face of adversity.

I am absolutely moved by the heroic mission of Col.niranjan singh slaria , great human sacrifice by him and his troops who undertook the mission of being at the Saichin and establishing the very first post before pakistan army could occupy . It is a honour to learn that he is from the Dogra Regiment and related to col. jaswant his brother from 3rd Dogras . My late father Brig. U.B.S. Verma was his first C.O. as well as later he was also the Dogra centre cimmandant in 1962 .
Col. Slaria should be honoured for his sacrifice and valour even today . He is a living legend of the Indian Army .

*A Tribute to the unsung hero of Siachen.* Respected Salaria sir, what an inspiring and professionally articulated interview conducted by Maj Gen Yash Mor. *This has apprised the environment about the complete and truthful account of the operation conducted by you in the worlds highest battlefield gifted by you to the nation not known to the senior hierarchy, the nation and people who matter.* The first foot column led by you is an act unparalleled in the history of our country. The truth is now known to everyone and we’re sure that the senior leadership would know the hard facts and true version of the gallantry displayed by you and your team of officers, jcos and the brave Ladakh Scouts troops. We pray to God Almighty and Jwala mata to Shower her blessings to bestow the highest award possible to you. The nation salutes you for your gallant action that gifted the Siachen Glacier to our nation, thus scripting history for every one to remember. I must compliment you for your flawless memory and narration of the great operation with such clarity of thought, authority and conviction. Gen Yash Mor deserves accolades & appreciation for conducting the interview in a highly professional and balanced manner. This interview must be circulated all over to reach every Indian to become aware of your gallant act and derive max inspiration, strength & motivation for the future generations to emulate.
Proud of you *Old Nabhaite* sir and always pray for your long healthy , successful and-happy life ahead and your valour getting due recognition very soon. *Ever Onwards and upwards* Regards *Maj Gen (Dr) Sandeep Sharma, retd, The Dogra Regiment*

OP MEGHDOOT.....Today it has been 40 yrs since UNNIS Kumaon (my paltan)was launched on the Siachen glacier as part of OP Meghdoot..Respectful homage to our martyrs who never returned.May the almighty continue to grant the str and fortitude to the widows of the martyrs ...Time has gone by,but to those of us who were part of UNNIS during those fateful days ,the memories of ,the trials and tribulations that the bn went through during the tenure are indelible. The bn as it moved on, as added to its glory and is a time tested bn both in Ops and peace. But, OP Meghdoot will always remain the pinnacle of this glory...Kalika mata ki Jai....🙏🏻🙏🏻
A few corrections/ additions to your podcast. 19 Kumaon was the first unit to be launched in op meghdoot alongwith a company of 4 Kumaon under Capt Kulkarni ( retd as Lt Gen). 19 Kumaon walked 260 kms with full battle loads including Mortars and Rcl crossing Zojila and Khardungla on foot. We were the ones who occupied the southern and central glacier outfoxing the Pakis. We lost 19 jawans and one officer in an avalanche. The basecamp war memorial is living testimony to that. The book 'Gorichen to Siachen ' Written by Brig DK Khanna described in detail all that happened. Can I suggest that you do a podcast with him to further bring out the hitherto unknown facts as a tribute to these heroes as well.

This is indeed a remarkable day in history of India, countless soldiers contributed to this great achievement. Credit to all in the leadership chain of command starting with Mrs Gandhi, who was always ready for military success, staring from 1971 war. The military leadership was ready for the challenge, we surprised Pakistan Army by a few months. The units which were part of the operation have each contributed however, lets not forget the value of the Ladakh scouts, they were the toughest of the lot. We are proud of 19 as a young battalion they did an outstanding task. I am glad to bring four podcasts on the Siachen and many more are in the offing. Thanks for your inputs. Jai Hind

Following the highest traditions of army he lost his life.He was really deserve the highest gallantry award PARAMVEER CHAKRA but unfortunately the recommendation was sent very late so got rejected.

Sir - for the benefit of mountaineers/history enthusiasts, would you be able to clarify some of the glaciers/points on the route that are not very clear in the audio. At around 29:30 and 29:50, Lt Col Salaria mentioned traversing East from Sia La towards other points to open routes. Sounded like Tarshem Glacier (was it Teram Shehr instead) and another point is mentioned at 29:50? Thank you.
