- Lt Col Manoj K Channan is a veteran of the 65 Armored Regiment. He is an analyst who writes on defence & strategy, technologies to include aviation, land and naval systems & homeland security.
Operation Pawan was a military operation undertaken in 1987 by the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to take control of the Jaffna Peninsula from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The operation, though resulting in higher casualties for the Indian forces, ended in an IPKF victory. However the consequences of Operation Pawan would inadvertently change Indian politics in the years to come.

Manoj that was a wonderful ball by ball recall of Op Pawan. I remember I had moved out from Armoured Division to 17 Mountain Division as DQ of the Artillery Brigade & got involved in Op Falcon, adopting a forward posture with a view to cut off Chumbi Valley to give PLA a politically unbearable blow. But kept a close watch on Op Pawan, gathering lessons. It is unfortunate that we have underplayed this operation both at the political level & even at the Forces level. It was unique in more ways than one. The jointness that we achieved without any formal doctrine in place. The creation of misson oriented combat teams & goups, & conceptualisation of air assault & amphibious forces at the tactical levels theorised and propounded by Gen Sunderji, whose hand written training notes were in full play. It still haunts us old soldiers how unceremoniously the last remains of IPKF were deinducted during VP Singh's premiership, unsung, untalked.
For scholors of military history & warcraft this operation will always remain a potent source of education both at the tactical warfighting levels & higher direction/conflict management at political levels, leaving much to learn/ unlearn especially the confusion being created by incomprehensive & incoherant orders emanating from the politicodiplomatic windows (read JN Dixit et al) directly impeding the communication/ orders flow through the established military chain of command. I am sure other armies including us have much to learn from this classic non-conventional, unparalleled, out of the box devoid of any legacy 'play book' Op Pawan. Thanks for documenting it so well. Col Manoj & Gen Yash Mor. God bless. My respects & salutation to all my brothers at arms who made the supreme sacrifice.
Thanks so much for your observations. Fully endorse your views. As young officers we followed this very closely.
Will bring more stories from this operation in future too
Sir why don't you come in the podcast and tell how life in the Army was during those days. Less salary, no technology, difficulty in traveling, less educated troops, etc. The aim is to educate the young generation about the difficulty of life during those times.
Sir,no doubt that bravest of brave Indian Officers and Soldiers, who laid down their lives, wounded for national cause in op Pawan,IPKF,also strongly deserve recognition like other wars like 1971 Indo Pak,Kargil war etc. What is an unforgettable coincidence too that I served in one of most prestigious regimental centre,;G.R.C.Guards Regimental Centre Kamptee(M.S.) from 1996-98 as posted and 6 A R,82 Arm Regt of 6 (I)Armoured Bde from 84-87 on T.D.Subsequently I served 11 JAK Li for a yr on td in 1995 in Poonch sector.I am grateful that what my relatively longer ERE tenure has taught me and my family a total LIFE to a doctor from A.M.C.Sir, warm salute to both of you with expectation of many such talk.A Col (retd).Jai Hind.
My grandfather was recently promoted as a JCO in 1989, the year I was born, he was sent to Jaffna the next month and took the charge of an Officer. He's always reluctant to talk about his days in Jaffna, however being always inquisitive, I would prod him to share "something" then he would tell us a few bits here n there. Only to gain his composure and refusing to continue.
However, he would emphasis on one thing again and again that "LTTE se zyada khatarnak aur haunsle Wala dushman humne nahi dekha."
We are learning a lot from the talks which are not their in the text books nor in the newspaper too ... Thank you so much for bringing wonderful people to ur platform. 🙏🙏🙏
Every soldier should be remembered and given due respect..
Sacrifice is supreme...
Thank you sir for giving us more insight into the untold story of OP Pawan. Jai Hind

These talks are gems brings out perspective of Forces which was not prominently there in discussion
Very good conversation, Sir. It reminded of those days when my younger sister was living in Gwalior with her two young kids. Her husband, Capt. A.K. Jain, was posted in Sri Lanka with Peace Keeping Force. He was a Mechanical Engineer. She used to tell us about so many casualties of Army jawans every day. She told us ki Capt. A.K. Jain retired as Lt. Col a few years back.
A very lucid and illuminatiing walk through of an operation ,which has been revisited Nd revived ,thanks to Efforts of Col Channan .
I watch all your videos sir. Thank you

Because I am a part of Operations OP Pawan.
Sahid subedar Modaram Birda (10 para sf). He attained martyrdom on 26.8.1988 at Zafna. He is my neighbour and he is pride of my village. Before leaving for sri lanka he told to his son in law that he will never back again. What a brave heart he had.

Sir I have doubt that what is meaning of RIP(rest in peace) and om shanti.
It was Rajeev Gandhi's biggest folly.
India was double crossed by Lanka & LTTE both.

Sir mere hisab se ye tragic tha bhut human rights violation sune hain hm Bbc vagera mein bhi dekhe the
The human rights violations were not commited by IPKF.Thise allegations of violation pertain to SL Army when it finakky crushed LTTE using massive force in 2009
Mere grandfather be is operation mai the or vo jafana mein veer gati ko prapt huye the 1987 mere Father be serve kr rhe hai abhi Indian army mai
