We seriously need an episode of AVGN, where his Nintendo has been replaced by the Nintendo mini classic, and then see his reaction, with the hilarious short controller cables :P oh that would just be perfect.
As impressive as it is for old NES games on modern sets I feel like the price is ultimately always going to keep people from ever wanting to bother. Especially with how insanely overpriced original NES carts are nowadays, if I even considered one I'd probably lean towards the Retro AVS or just opt for a Framemeister and use OG consoles
AlphaOmegaSin it's very well designed but come on, at the end of the day it's more expensive than a ps4 pro, which can do a lot more besides games. It's just going to remain a niche interest for gamers. If I had the money and gotten everything else I'd want (or most of it anyway), I'd get it, but as it is it's not top of the list. I'll just play the games through virtual console for now.
I know right,I prefer The AVS though with the AVS you connect HDMI to your Elgato hd ,towards the TV after that have fun playing good old classic nintendo games
but avs+everdrive+controller its almost same? and avs cant even play other systems like analogue nt mini can thanks jailbreak software ofc its expensive but what you get is just amazing could not be happiers
I plated myself in real gold and saved money ;P maybe its only one in gold plated mini analogue but I don't know ;D was fun to learn plating and make it myself and earn little pocket change for plating stuff in the way
i wont lie..if i hit the lotto and had millions i would prolly get this. but, till that day...i am cool with my OG system (though it gets cranky at times) and crt.
racerxgundam i would do much worse ;D i would buy every single nes game/snes nwc1990 grey/gold "Wanna earn 1 million dollars?" Lets see how fast you pack that shit Up ;P
The "3rd party" firmware Ryan talks about is actually by the same guy who designed the NES core currently in the system, Kevtris. Analogue has no problem with you using the firmware. You can download cores allowing you to play multiple 8 bit systems.
We know what Ryan was talking about, "unlocking features using SD cards", wink wink nod nod... but the really cool thing he didn't explain is that the person that designed both the HDMI conversion and the NES core, has also developed many other cores and there are actually some cartridge adapters that will enable you to plug, let's say, a Genesis or SNES cart to it! So yes, this is what the coleco chameleon should've been.
I just want to say that i really liked Ryan in this video. Usually he is not my favourite, in a lot of videos he seems a bit "off" but in this one he really came with strong arguments and overall great insightful comments. Definitely an upgrade. Keep up the good work guys!
There is no justifying paying $500 for a machine that plays NES games. you can buy an actual NES for literally hundreds of dollars cheaper and you get the real deal that this thing tries to imitate.
Jesus Zamora even the argument of HD does not add up. Those games were never in HD, so making them HD makes them already look inaccurate to some degree. Might as well just emulate at that point.
"I would love to be at the airport playing Dr. Mario on my Switch." ...Why not just play Dr. Mario on 3DS? There's Dr. Mario NES, Game Boy, the DSiWare version and the 3DS version.
You guys needed to elaborate more about the jailbreak firmware. It is the main reason to own the system and gives it significant value over the other NES clones. It basically becomes an Everdrive/Flash Cart for 18 different 8-bit systems including NES, SMS, GB/GB Color, GG, Colecovision, Atari 2600/7800, and O2. With the jailbreak firmware, you can also dump the roms from your NES carts to your SD card. This system is amazing with that firmware.
Yeah I thought Ryan was going to elaborate more there. Instead of just replacing the need for an Everdrive, it basically becomes a reference system for tons of 8 bit systems (which really would be great for youtube streamers like Mike mentioned.)
if people decide against emulation for authenticity, why not buy an original nes and an old crt tv? it doesn't get more authentic than that and i doubt it will cost you 500 dollars.
I agree, why not use a regular NES. Buut... People don't want a CRT. Most don't want two TV:s in their livingroom, some don't even have space for another TV in front of their couch.
Thanks for the great review! It'd be cool to see another video going over all the other system cores like Master System and Gameboy that I have developed for the nt mini though. I'm that "individual" at 13:03 hehe. Also btw, the gold system was the original NT and not the mini, and I don't think it's for sale any more.
You are a God among mortals. Hopefully you finish the Intellivision core some day for it. I have a mini and your cores made it worth every penny and then some.
The thing is, there's a jailbreak firmware available made by the same person (Kevtris) who helped make the system for Analogue that plays a TON of systems already (Atari 2600/7800, Intellivision, Master System, Game Gear, Game Boy/Color, Colecovision), with more planned, and cart/controller adapters in development. That firmware makes the NT Mini worth every penny.
fuck. 500 bucks and it only plays famicom and nes? no thanks. Quality is nice but a gilded spoon is still just a spoon. At least gimme a spork for that much. Snes superfam capability would make it worthwhile.
OfficialChrissums with the new jailbreak firmware, it plays every 8 bit system imaginable at the same quality. It also allows for dumping carts on to an sd card for preservation
sure but if you cant put the cart in and have to load it on an sd card you may as well just emulate it. theres no difference other than on the technical side of things.
emulation has a noticeable input lag of probably about 1/10-1/15th of a second in my experience. I wouldn't buy this thing myself, But I can see the merit of it. I emulate all my NES games personally
The jailbreak firmware is what makes Analogue NT Mini worth it. It turns it into a retro 8 bit system FPGA pure old tech preservation engine. It is incredible from that perspective.
Hlaford Blodcyning It can play other 8-bit consoles, like the GameBoy, Master System, ColecoVision, Atari 2600. Someone said they were making adapters for it so you can even play the original carts for those systems as well.
Maybe. One of the television channels that just sells things live all day long. If you search "QVC screen" on Google Images, that's exactly what I mean. I listened to this video while cooking dinner and it sounded exactly like I was listening to QVC.
Jack mcslay. There is a big difference in fpga vs software emulation with respect to audio quality, video resolution /quality and input lag. I have tested multiple snes and nes software emulators and compared them to original hardware. All have significant problems. I test them using a bvm crt with wired controllers and use the manual lag test with 240p test suite. Nestopia had the best audio and video quality but it suffered from over 3 frames lag vs 0.5 frames with actual hardware
None, because I can’t adequately get them going on my HDTV. If I had something like this? Tetris, Marble Madness, Strider, Donkey Kongs, Super Mario Bros., Cobra Triangle, Lolos, Zelda.... I could go on.
The "third-party firmware" is by Kevin "Kevtris" Horton the same guy that designed the FPGA layout and official firmware for the Analogue NT Mini. In that way it isn't actually third-party, but instead just "non-official." It unlocks cores for a WIDE variety of other 8-bit game systems and allows their ROMs to be played from the SD card. Kevtris has also stated that he's working on cartridge port adapters to allow you to run the real cartridges from those systems on the Analogue NT Mini.
Gold contacts really aren't the best electrical conductor for connections, but manufacturers still do it because in the minds of people who know no better they assume it must be good because it's gold, and it's a very soft metal too so it wears off to the metal under it quickly.
Like Ryan mentioned, there are third party updates which can add new features to the nt, one of them being Kevtris', and it adds coleco vision, atari 2600/7800, game gear/master system, original game boy, aamong others. Granted it's not official, it's developed by the very person who worked on the nt's native firmware, so quality is not an issue. With all those features in consideration, i think it makes the analogue nt worth it's price.
does the HDMI output allow you to use the zapper/ light gun on an HD TV now? or does the gun still control the requirement of having to use a CRT for the photon recognition?
The HDMI port is for HD output to a modern display which is not compatible with the technology a light gun uses to operate so that can never be a thing unless they build some device that emulates and fools a light gun into working. What he is saying is there is another connector on the Analogue NT mini that can support all the other outputs including all outputs you could send to a retro consumer CRT or a PVM/BVM CRT. These can support lightgun play. The Retro AVS system cannot support it because it only outputs to the HDMI port.
I think the guy who made the FPGA Kevtris released the updates to add additional functionality (i think it can play other systems running games of sd card)
Here the thing. I own the original systems. I like playing cartridges on the actual system it was made for. That's just how I am. That's why I never got a Retron 5. I want the actual system, controls, the feel and the complications that Come with it. It what I grown up with. hitting the reset button 100 times to get it to work. it's nostalgic to me.
These well made fpga consoles got me wondering-are they better than original hardware? Are there any significant drawbacks? With all these menu options and output options it looks superior. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the nt mini and the analog nt introduse no input lag.
ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ Yup, I enjoy my share of HD games/movies/whatever, but nothing beats the time machine that is the CRT. Especially when I want a heavy dose of nostalgia. 👍🏻
It's not overpriced though, based on how expensive the FPGA is. I love the technology.

I love the idea of the analogue nt and avs. Due to fpga technology this is a step further from software emulation and into hardware simulation ;) I never owned and NES so the nostalgia factor of having the OG has never appealed to me. Overpriced? Yes and no. Expensive? Yes but still affordable, as an electrical engineer I welcome innovation and options.
"Nintendo needs to up his game on the sub service" Well, the Switch NES virtual console games that you subscribe for will have Over-The-Internet Multiplayer added to them. That's a definite and awesome improvement.
The Nintendo subscription Ryan is talking about does not offer access to Virtual Console games forever as long as you pay, it apparently only offers access to a few games that month, after that month the games will be swapped by others. So you can only access them for that specific month.
I am afraid the thumbnail and the the intro are misleading as there is a console literally called "Analogue Nt"... they not just made a "mini" you know...
Question: I have the Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) Famicom cart and I have the Super Joy II and that famicom-coloured portable garbage thing whatever it's called and both don't play the music properly. Does this thing play the audio properly for that game and for Famicom carts with custom sound hardware?
It seems most of the people in the comments section don't seem to realize this console is intended for people who stream or upload themselves playing NES games on a regular basis. $500 isn't going to be a big deal to these kinds of people.
I'm really kind of shocked and disappointed that you guys (Ryan and Mike) spent so little time and research actually putting the machine through its paces. So much of what you spent time on was discussing marketing specs and surface features of this machine. This is an extremely capable video game console, far beyond every other competing NES system, by design. Not only can it play original cartridges, but it can also play imports, translations, homebrews, and any other kind of ROM by loading them from the SD card slot, a massive feature that got the most minor of mentions in the least verbose manner. Beyond that, the officially unofficial jailbreak firmware allows this same console (FOR NO EXTRA CHARGE) to quickly re-program the FPGA chip in order to make it run 19 of the other 8-bit consoles on the market in the 80s and 90s. That makes this machine 21-consoles-in-1. I am really looking forward to the followup video, where you demonstrate the expansion video cables you order from MonoPrice, and demonstrate the alternate FPGA cores running all those alternate systems.
Half a stack to play NES thats clinically insane! With 500 you can get a multi retro console plus retro games that span various systems I would never pay half a stack just to play 8 bit games WTF?
I have one of the original Analogue NTs and a AVS. I would recommend the AVS. It's more affordable and the customer support was way better. I have had some display issues with the NT. Maybe I am a unique case, but it doesn't matter. When you pay $500 for a system, you shouldn't have issues. I was able to figure out a way around the issues (with NO help from the analogue people). With the AVS I have spoke to them at conventions and bought other products from retrousb and as a company they are just way better. Additionally, I had to wait about 8 months to get my Analogue NT. For the AVS it was about a week. Both are great products, but the Analogue is just not worth it for even the most extreme retro video game fans. If you have the money to throw around, you can give it a chance. You probably won't be disappointed. But there are other options out there.
Also to add on the controllers, the 8bitdo controller and wireless dongle are both fantastic! You can buy them separately and I love them. They also offer an SNES variant. You don't need a special console to use them. They work on the original NES and SNES.
The problem now is the carts themselves might be failing... So now we will see reprints? I mean some of those games maybe don't have copyrights anymore?
MetalJesusRocks was just talking about the controllers. You guys should get together with him one episode! (I know it's hard since he lives on the West Coast)
Is there one of these clone systems for the Mega Drive/Genesis? I've been looking into it because Paprium is set to come out, and that's gonna be on Mega Drive only. I have no TV, so I'd want one of these consoles for Mega Drive that can do HDMI.
Is there a verdict on whether this has any advantages or disadvantages when compared to the AVS? EDIT: well, the Nt supports Famicom microphone games, so that's a definite perk, but other than that, it has a bunch of extras that I don't care about (wire inputs, 1080p over 720p, SD input vs USB), so while it's the better system, it's not 300 dollars better.
I really dont understand the dislikes I think ryan is an awesome edition to the gang. He gets into the nitty gritty tech parts of things and I really like that. Keep this up Mike and Ryan.
I found a NES Mini yesterday at Walmart in Argentina for $185, now I see this for $500... c'mon! Hope the Switch online service works fine, since there is where I'll be playing NES classics.
Another side note of this system. It has an option to fix the 8 sprite limit the original NES had. Between the HDMI out and no more flickering sprites, I'd kill to have one of these some day. :) Thanks for the impressions.
I've found original NES consoles at decent prices (around $80). I have one already, but why do you think it's so hard to obtain 2nd hand, or did I misunderstand you?
I don't quite understand, Even if the NES mini doesn't (normally) allow more than what the library offers. It is way cheaper. Is this console more faithful to justify the price?
We seriously need an episode of AVGN, where his Nintendo has been replaced by the Nintendo mini classic, and then see his reaction, with the hilarious short controller cables :P oh that would just be perfect.
RMJ1984 We NEED this, asap

This is worth about 1800 dollars on eBay at the moment. That would be called a "sound" investment in anyone's book. Should have dropped that 450 huh?
It doesn’t really imitate though, to be fair. It duplicates....with far too many excessive bells and whistles we don’t need in an NES console.
The output?
Its slots are very tight. Got it.
That’s a problem he’s always had an issue with😉
"I would love to be at the airport playing Dr. Mario on my Switch."

nope, you need something premioum like the frameister...
The Rolls Royce of NES consoles.

Yeah I thought Ryan was going to elaborate more there. Instead of just replacing the need for an Everdrive, it basically becomes a reference system for tons of 8 bit systems (which really would be great for youtube streamers like Mike mentioned.)
@Mitzos
The issue is emulation introduces lag and is also comparatively less accurate.
In that case, why? If that's what you want to do with it you can do it with a Raspberry pi far cheaper, and better
try HIgan it has the more accurate NES emulation yet, if it wasn`t for a few opcodes it owuld be perfect
if people decide against emulation for authenticity, why not buy an original nes and an old crt tv? it doesn't get more authentic than that and i doubt it will cost you 500 dollars.
i keep an arcade cabinet for such cases, all my retro consoles play there as they were meant to be...
Not everyone wants to deal with heavy CRTs. Plus the Analogue NT has so many cool features.
I agree, why not use a regular NES. Buut... People don't want a CRT.
Most don't want two TV:s in their livingroom, some don't even have space for another TV in front of their couch.
no input lag ----- modern TV
choose one
You can find LCDs with low input lag. Not CRT level good, but still good enough for a lot of twitch sensitive games.
Thanks for the great review! It'd be cool to see another video going over all the other system cores like Master System and Gameboy that I have developed for the nt mini though. OfficialChrissums with the new jailbreak firmware, it plays every 8 bit system imaginable at the same quality. It also allows for dumping carts on to an sd card for preservation
sure but not physical carts. thats the whole point of getting this over a retron
OfficialChrissums again, the retron is emulation. This is using real fpga which allows those 8bit games to run well natively
sure but if you cant put the cart in and have to load it on an sd card you may as well just emulate it. theres no difference other than on the technical side of things.
emulation has a noticeable input lag of probably about 1/10-1/15th of a second in my experience. I wouldn't buy this thing myself, But I can see the merit of it. I emulate all my NES games personally
But does it have blast processing?
With the cartridge slot being so tight, it'd be good to have an eject function.
Goodwill Sony Trinitron : 20 dollars. NES console : 50 dollars. DONE.
Neither tested. Neither guaranteed. And both rare to find.
I love Batman on the NES, it's my favorite nes game of all time, I've beaten it 402 times without dying.
...and I’ve tried playing it twice and didn’t like it.
The jailbreak firmware is what makes Analogue NT Mini worth it. It turns it into a retro 8 bit system FPGA pure old tech preservation engine. It is incredible from that perspective.
Hlaford Blodcyning
It can play other 8-bit consoles, like the GameBoy, Master System, ColecoVision, Atari 2600. Someone said they were making adapters for it so you can even play the original carts for those systems as well.
Wade Schipprack adapters are on the roadmap though they do not exist yet.
I like how Ryan was hinting about using it for emulation with the SD.
Ryan Schott That's what I'd use it for, but my homebrew Wii already does this and then some.
I’m getting the new and improved version 😎
RIP Adam West :(
Shopping channel vibe, but love you guys. Keep the great work.
Somebody should definitely make an edit of this video, but with QVC/HSN-style info banners added on the side and bottom.
That's hilarious. I'm guessing you mean like those product commercials that are an hour long?
Maybe. One of the television channels that just sells things live all day long. If you search "QVC screen" on Google Images, that's exactly what I mean.
I listened to this video while cooking dinner and it sounded exactly like I was listening to QVC.

I like Ryan's hair this way
Jesus!
But it's impressive how much love somebody put into keeping the NES games alive!
Why all the downvotes? Mike and Ryan are doing a good job here!!
My teacher has the Nintendo classic and he connected it to the smart TV and now I realize how awesome he is.😂😂😂
I am SO GLAD that I got my hands on the NES Classic ^^
It wasn’t hard unless a person was impatient.
Informative and interesting. Always like hearing you guys explain and discuss gaming hardware.
does the HDMI output allow you to use the zapper/ light gun on an HD TV now? or does the gun still control the requirement of having to use a CRT for the photon recognition?
Of course you cannot use zapper / light guns with modern TV's over HDMI
That sounds contrary to what he says towards the end of the video. just looking for clarification.
I understand how it works. I don't think you understand what I'm asking, lol
I do understand what you are asking and the answer is No. You still need a CRT :(
if apple made an nes
piplup2009 the truth on this is overwhelming.
THIS XD
The bezels aren't big enough
This one probably has a heaphone jack.
Yup, But without the quality
I think the guy who made the FPGA Kevtris released the updates to add additional functionality (i think it can play other systems running games of sd card)
Awesome vid, thanks. Hardware reviews are pretty cool.
Like holding an original G1 Transformer - perfect analogy! And you are the right vintage if you can imagine that :D
The individual you refer to releasing firmwares to add functionality and extra cores, was the one who designed the entire system, Kevtris.
For that money I would realy want much better case quality here. The backside with the output is looking rubbish...
for me having all cables with the machine is not "a dream comes true" but normal ^^
500$!!!!!!!
Even Microsoft would be like:
"Do I look like a Charity Case?!"
NT mini nes 500$
Regular NES 40$
E shop 5 $ per game
Emulator 0$
What’s an E shop?
Fuck emulation.
So the only advantage compared to the avs is the video scaling options and rca connector.
Mike looks slick today!
Here the thing. I own the original systems. I like playing cartridges on the actual system it was made for. That's just how I am. That's why I never got a Retron 5. Got the new nt mini noir 😎
These well made fpga consoles got me wondering-are they better than original hardware? Are there any significant drawbacks? With all these menu options and output options it looks superior. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the nt mini and the analog nt introduse no input lag.
Mike and Ryan are the best! Like if you agree 👍
I would rather look below my TV and see the original console instead of an overpriced black (or Gold) box.
ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ Yup, I enjoy my share of HD games/movies/whatever, but nothing beats the time machine that is the CRT. Especially when I want a heavy dose of nostalgia. 👍🏻
Exactly!
Until they start to break down. NES will not work forever

Well, the Switch NES virtual console games that you subscribe for will have Over-The-Internet Multiplayer added to them. That's a definite and awesome improvement.
casual translation: エキスパンダ = e-ki-su-pa-n-da = expander (famicom disk expander on the back of Analogue)
Boojakascha Huh?
Like the "Analogue Nt"? The NES they did before the "Analogue Nt mini"?
Question: I have the Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) Famicom cart and I have the Super Joy II and that famicom-coloured portable garbage thing whatever it's called and both don't play the music properly. Does this thing play the audio properly for that game and for Famicom carts with custom sound hardware?
just to make sure, you can buy ps4 and additional joypad for 500$ right?
Not to mention an entire PC that surpasses it.
Dude you guys should review the Apple pippin for an AVGN episode ! It would be classic nerd material
spent $40 on a retron 2 nes/snes. Not built like a tank with all the bells and whistles, but it plugs in and plays great.
A $500 NES clone for that price better come with a night alone with Mike's 10 incher.
we need the AVGN to take a look on this .
Love how knowledgeable and informative videos with Ryan are.
MetalJesusRocks was just talking about the controllers. You guys should get together with him one episode! (I know it's hard since he lives on the West Coast)
MJR is a corporate shill.
Why no mention of the Hi-Def Nes mod?
Is there one of these clone systems for the Mega Drive/Genesis? I've been looking into it because Paprium is set to come out, and that's gonna be on Mega Drive only. I have no TV, so I'd want one of these consoles for Mega Drive that can do HDMI.
A normal Mega Drive doesn't have HDMI out
Is there a verdict on whether this has any advantages or disadvantages when compared to the AVS?
EDIT: well, the Nt supports Famicom microphone games, so that's a definite perk, but other than that, it has a bunch of extras that I don't care about (wire inputs, 1080p over 720p, SD input vs USB), so while it's the better system, it's not 300 dollars better.
I really dont understand the dislikes I think ryan is an awesome edition to the gang.
He gets into the nitty gritty tech parts of things and I really like that.
Keep this up Mike and Ryan.
DOW2Fanboy and ryan is sexy too!
15:22 +dannycrvntz I think Ryan is talking about you here!
I had 2 of them die on me. They replaced both though without an issue.
WOW! Seriously? That should not happen on a $500 system.
Does the 1080p for the Analogue NT mini have less lag on a 4k TV than the retrousb AVS at 720p or does that difference not affect lag?
But can it directly input images into my head or is that an addon you need to buy?
I found a NES Mini yesterday at Walmart in Argentina for $185, now I see this for $500... c'mon! Hope the Switch online service works fine, since there is where I'll be playing NES classics.
Hope they release this as these guys don’t appreciate it. 👊
So to verify, I clean my game contacts by blowing into the cartridge?
I still have "malagai" for Atari 2600 if your still interested Mike o_0
I want one
"additional capabilites" a.k.a you can load roms on an SD card
Another side note of this system. It has an option to fix the 8 sprite limit the original NES had. Between the HDMI out and no more flickering sprites, I'd kill to have one of these some day. :)
Thanks for the impressions.
Whoah really, Super Dodgeball with no flickering? I didn't think it was possible on hardware ha
>RCA connections
>Audiophile quality
Choose one
The question is, is the gold one worth $4500 in 24k gold? If it is, not a bad showpiece and investment.
I rather spend this much on a SNES version if I ever would be crazy to do so.
How lucky you ended up.
I'm a bit tempted by the AVS, but Nestopia is quite accurate these days.
I wish you guys had talked about how you can play ROMs off the SD card
I've found original NES consoles at decent prices (around $80). I have one already, but why do you think it's so hard to obtain 2nd hand, or did I misunderstand you?
I don't quite understand, Even if the NES mini doesn't (normally) allow more than what the library offers. It is way cheaper. Is this console more faithful to justify the price?
50 dollars more ? Only for the color ?
Definitely not worth it.
If you play a lot of old NES games , the color should not matter to you.
This system is only for people who have TH-cam money to blow...
