I love that Rachel settles every score with education. My favorite thing about this channel is how much I learn. I wasn't really that interested in poetry before Rachel started making videos about it, but some of the poetry that's been discussed here has given me a true appreciation for it and made me realize perhaps I just wasn't understanding poetry. Thank you Rachel for seeing so many situations as a teaching opportunity!

When I was in my creative writing classes in college, the only people who gave their thoughts on the pieces were the ones who weren't professionals. One of my favorite examples is one of the most important poets in ancient China called 白居易 would insist on having uneducated or even illiterate commoners to listen to him read his poems, and help him reflect on how his poems could be more accessible to the common masses, without throwing all techniques out of the window.

As people have pointed out, Gabbie wouldn’t last a day in art school or in writing workshops. I wonder if she took any to prepare for her book, or if she studied at all.
(I understand that not everyone has access to an education and it is not necessary to have one in order to make art, but Gabbie absolutely has the means to put herself through one if poetry interested her seriously.)
And I believe she wouldn’t have lasted because the whole point of workshops is learning and then receiving feedback from peers and professionals. People who taught me told me that the more “pro” they get, the more ruthless the criticism is. It betters you and prepares you for actual criticism in reviews. But Gabbie cannot take a gram of criticism.

I read a book about the Iowa Writer’s Workshop once which opened with a description of how indigenous poets on a tiny island - Kiribati, I think? - have had a practice similar to workshopping for a long, long time: when someone feels the need to write a poem, he’d go off and sit alone to compose the poem in his head. Once a sort of “draft” was thought up, he’d get together several trusted poet friends and recite to them; they’d cheer when they liked something and rip the speaker a new one when they did not. Then the poet would go away alone again overnight to take the criticism deemed useful, discard that which was not, and make any other improvements before going back to the village, where the final version would be incorporated into the verbal culture.
All this to say that while a university education and/or wide reading are useful for poets, you could still become quite talented without them, or even without paper and pen - if you have the mental toughness to actively seek out audiences that can and will be brutally honest (I think the book put it as something like “caring more about the work coming into being than about the author’s feelings”), and then the perspective and good grace to *listen to them*. You may not accept every suggestion, but do think about them seriously before you do so.
(For whatever it’s worth, I do actually have some professional credentials to back up that last statement - I write test questions. Three reviewers read and comment on each one, then it is sent back to me. I am allowed to reject a suggestion, but I am expected to add a note explaining why. Then the boss reads all these notes and either accepts my reasoning or kicks it back to me. Sometimes the boss agrees with my reasoning, sometimes the boss agrees with the reviewer, sometimes the boss agrees with neither of us and will send it back to me with their own feedback. That varies, but what doesn’t vary is that it really is nothing personal - the reputation of the business is tied up in producing the best-quality product possible, so if we want to keep getting paid, we’d best engage with the process and keep our minds on the product. Does it sting sometimes, even with something as impersonal as a test question? Yes, but that’s my problem, not the publisher’s, so I take a walk and get a grip and then act like a professional.)

As someone who studies literature and creative writing in university, I can almost guarantee you that Gabbie Hanna has never set foot in a writing workshop, especially one in an educational setting. To be frank, her work would be ripped to shreds by serious writers and poets. It is laughable garbage that she pushed out to make a quick buck off of the populaar Rupi Kaur aesthetic (which I'm also not a fan of but at least Kaur put a bit more effort and soul into her poetry than GH did). Any good writer or poet knows that criticism is a part of learning and is absolutely vital to improving. The fact that she went nuclear on Rachel for what was REALLY GOOD AND FAIR (albeit blunt) criticism just highlights how narcissistic and delusional GH is. She is the type of girl that I've met in my writing classes who spends an hour writing a poem, and she expects everyone to praise her for it, even though others have put far more time and care into their work. Good art production always involves criticism and revision. GH is not a mature or talented artist--I hesitate to even call her one at all--and she will never become one because she does not understand how constructive criticism works in the field of art production.

I’d like to add, that even if Doggolescence started as a parody of just Hanna’s book/writing style, it’s has actually become more of a parody of a systemic issue within poetry, where big name publishers hand book deals for poetry books to already famous people so that they can capitalize on a low effort to high marketing ratio, where they need to do little marketing themselves, as the ‘author’ has a preexisting audience that they can market to on their end. Thus leaving the lonely poetry shelf in big book stores, overrun with similar poetry books, with similar covers and similar content, while classics and new/unknown poets are shoved to the bottom row.

I was initially on the side that the parody book was a step too far. Primarily, the reason I thought it was verging on bullying was down to Gabbie's reaction to it. Her feelings were hurt. She clearly is very personally attached to the things she creates and is sensitive to people's perceptions of her and her art.
But, admittedly, I've read neither book (although I watched your reviews of her poetry). Knowing your personality online, however, and having consumed so much of your content/art, I do personally trust that there wouldn't be anything in the book that could ever be misconstrued as bullying *or intended to cause harm*. As you said, it's the idea of a parody that triggered her, not the actual content of your book.
Ultimately, I agree the book itself is harmless.
Thank you for taking the time to discuss this point of contention at length and coming at it from a place of calm and education.

I was initially on the same side. I can't stand Gabbie, but as someone who had never heard of Rachel,(or what she does) it did sound kind of cruel. Once you look into the actual content and the full context you see a very different picture. Gabbie is smart and incredibly manipulative, she knew by saying it was mocking an abused child those of us who had experienced CSA or something similar would immediately be triggered. I'll admit that's what happened with me, and what my original opinion was based off of, my own trauma. I'm not proud of believing her on this one thing even for the few day that I did. But I really hope others look into it as well and realize that they're being manipulated. Gabbie needs help, although I doubt she's willing to put the work in to truly change. It's not easy looking at yourself, realizing faults, and then making changes. Especially when you're used to getting your own way.

I grew up in an alcoholic, abusive household. I still, to this day, have emotional and mental issues from it, as well as difficulty speaking to people I disagree with in a respectful way. I understand how being in an abusive situation can make you more sensitive to perceived threats, and how your reactions to those perceived threats can seem over the top to "outsiders".
That being said, GH's reaction was incredibly unhealthy. One of the things you learn in trauma-oriented therapy is that while your reactions may seem rational and acceptable to you, they may not always be healthy to you or to the people who, in some way, are affected by your reaction. Feeling attacked by a negative review is understandable. Being upset by this, perhaps more than "normal", is also understandable. Neither of those are inherently bad. But what is bad is going on an online tirade where you call someone narcissistic, a weird ass bitch, etc for millions of people to see and where that tirade will always exist (because nothing is truly gone on the internet). That is not a healthy response, and I personally get so frustrated when people use their trauma to justify traumatizing someone else.

So just going through all these to see if I've got them straight:
    1) Gabbie says her book is a parody of other books, but then can't handle when her book is parodied.
    2) Gabbie says the book is written from the perspective of an abused child.
    3) Same book also says things like, "Make others buy their own copy of my book because I want a Lamborghini." Which doesn't seem to in any way to substantiate the idea that the book is written from the perspective of an abused child.
    4) Gabbie then further substantiates the idea she's heavily or even primarily concerned about money and not simply kidding with the above poem by talking about how the book is consistently making/selling $40,000 a month for years up until her own "parody" is parodied.
    5) You're actually not making any money off your parody and are instead donating the profits to an animal rescue shelter.
    6) Gabbie claims you mocked her trauma relentlessly for pointing out her writing style seemed lazy.
    7) Gabbie calls you manipulative, narcissistic, sociopathic, and money hungry.
It seems to me that Gabbie might just be projecting a bit when she calls you manipulative, narcissistic, sociopathic, and money hungry.

Mel Brooks and Tyler Perry are considered two of the greatest film makers of all time, the Wayan's bros and Will Ferrell are beloved. Airplane! Elf, Hot Fuzz and Sharknado are beloved pieces of media and our culture. A parody can be the best compliment you will ever receive or the harshest criticism. I think Gabbi's reaction speaks to her fragility, her reactionariness and her world view. She doesn't think she has any good faith criticism, everybody is attacking her, personally and she has to attack them in kind.

Are you familiar with the unsanitized original Fairy Tales? They're quite horrific. In the original Sleeping Beauty, Aurora is sent to sleep by a cursed sliver in her finger. After laying asleep, the king figures she won't mind if he has sex with her a few times. In her hidden chamber she gives birth to twins while still asleep. Seeking sustinance the babies try suckling on her fingers. When one of them dislodges the sliver she wakes up, the curse broken.
All of this year of events and horrible abuse is condensed into a Prince kissing her awake in the Disney-fied version.
IIRC, there's a point, while hiding with the Fae and using the name Briar Rose that she has non-consensual sex with a bear.
I feel like I've blocked out the worst of the slaughter, cannibalism, and SA of those early stories. And they said historical literature courses would be a fun class at Uni. Ugh!

Yes! I’m actually so interested in the history of fairytales (and folklore in general) and have a couple of videos on it - there’s one on the origin of sleeping beauty, as you mentioned, and others on the littler mermaid and little red riding hood :) If you want to check them out, I hope you enjoy them ☺️

Yes get James Marriott’s ass. I used to watch him occasionally, I found his take on some topics valuable and some of his jokes funny, but when I watched his video about yours, I was really offended and baffled. Then when I saw iNabber’s response vs Marriott’s I saw that he was not someone I wanted to support.

i think his reviews have gotten a LOT kinder since he has personally felt what it's like to release art and receive criticism but his older videos ultimately do feel very mean? but i think thats...allowed. people are allowed to give very cutting and comedic criticism without any constructive feedback, the way movie critics Often do!

    • @sara_0764
      @sara_0764 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@zorro...... I understand that but like Rachel said, hers was a lot more constructive in the way that gabbie said she wanted, and the way that james Marriott talked about Rachel and her videos was very misleading and kind of rude and was even kind of attacking her, was very uncalled for. gabbie attacking her criticism in comparison is just baffling. iNabber misrepresented Rachel, even to a lesser extent, and he held himself accountable in his next video, and kept up the original video with a statement in the comments apologizing. So even if James’ original critiques were not very constructive but still valid, he did spread misinformation about Rachel and her criticisms and had a bad response to that. even though I no longer find that kind of criticism entertaining, and I would understand why the creator may not enjoy hearing that form of criticism, there’s still room for it to exist. I didn’t want to support someone who didn’t seem genuine when they were held accountable for their misrepresentation of Rachel and her work. He wasn’t really criticizing Rachel’s videos I don’t think, correct me if I’m wrong because it’s been awhile since I saw the video but I think he was sort of defending gabbie in that video. So in the end I was just frustrated and disappointed in him and unsubbed 🤷‍♀️ hope that makes sense.

Thank you for talking about this! As a songwriter, I can say I’ve written a couple parodies of original pieces, and it’s just as fun as writing the original! Every video I’ve seen where someone says your parody book was in poor taste, I defended your actions. I stand by your parody, and Gabbie just can’t be helped at this point

Gabbie Hanna: Rachel, who I sent my book to so that it could be critiqued, is not enough of an artist or intellectual to critique my poetry, and also she was mean to me
Rachel: So here's an hour-long video with many sources and examples about why you're wrong, all done in a kind and educational way that I know that you'll never watch
(Also, I personally get really angry about people who discount someone's opinions because the person isn't smart enough, or educated enough, or doesn't have enough experience with the thing they're criticizing. It was rude of Gabbie to imply that your art isn't art, and that you don't have the intelligence or education or artistic experience to criticize her work. It was also rude and, quite frankly, wrong, of her to imply that those things are necessary at all for a valuable critique of a work. The entire point of parody is to make critique more accessible, so that you don't need to meet a certain standard to understand and participate.)

Very late to the party, but: Even if somebody didn't know anything about the drama between these two, the way they are behaving and reacting to each others videos is enough to paint the picture. Gabbie gets personally offensive and belittling, using coarse language. Rachel stays calm and tries to educate. The more Gabbie defends herself, the more she needs to defend herself.

this was excellent. i learned a lot about parody and its role in the world. especially i appreciated how you said that parody gives a way to make poetry critique more accessible to people who don't or can't read a more academic critique of the work. also giving a more full history of the uses of parody and reminding me that parody is not simply a mean-spirited mockery, but is a part of the literary tradition and that an excellent response is to lean in to the parody. after watching for weeks the gabbie hanna debacle/meltdown/etc, i'll admit i was still a bit dubious as to whether or not you writing doggolescence was 'fair' - but you convinced me in this video that your parody book was more than fair - so thank you for that.

As someone who is graduating from arts school, I can confirm (not that Rachel needs it) that this is a very solid and uncontroversial analysis of the genre! The description that Rachel has given on the genre of parody is the stuff you hear in 1st-year English classes. Gabbie and those who defend her in this particular subject are simply displaying their gross lack of knowledge of literature.

First of all, the editing in this video is top-notch.
But also, I absolutely love this video. It’s so academic and informative without ever being dry. But this video also takes this horrible situation you were thrust and turns it into a learning experience. Critique is one of the ways we advance as a society. It can force you to confront problematic things. The driving force behind it is the idea that we can be better-whether you’re using the object of the critique as a positive or negative example.
    Bravo, Rachel.
