Oh god that "You are in debt, I don't like it!" dialogue is soooo broken in this game. I had a game as America were I was making roughly 60 gold per turn for most of the game. (Though it was on normal, I am a noob don't judge me.)
And Brazil would just constantly praise me for being rich, then chastise me for going bankrupt a few turns later. And my financial situation had never changed between both points. They just seemed to randomly like me/hate me every few turns. It's just broken.

    • @SirusDiarota

It's probably flagged to play as that nation is making more than you. Think of it as the AI taking the piss if you have a small army or not enough/too many wonders.
Least that's my take on it.

    • @Amaror2
      @Amaror2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

SirusDiarota Well then it is horribly written. If that's the case the AI should say that by making fun of your nations economy. It should not say "You have too much debt", because that's just plain not true.

Well you mentioned it, but I don't think you made it clear that a veteran Civ player will NOT be able to find a challenge in this game. The AI constantly makes incredibly bad decisions in just about all aspects of its play. Higher difficulty levels don't improve the AI, but just give it an increasingly large set of semi-arbitrary bonuses against you.
The tactical AI is much, much worse than Civ V. I watched Germany try to attack a city state with four catapults and some cavalry; more than enough to crush it. Unfortunately they never actually attacked the city with the catapults, preferring to mill them around inside the city state aimlessly while weathering fire from the city center until they were all destroyed. It even embarked them on the ocean next to the city a few times for no apparent reason.
It is truly unplayable if you care about the war aspect of the game. If you like peaceful building, it's probably the best Civ yet. Gives you a lot of peaceful things to do.

The most immersion breaking moment of AI dialogue came to me in my first game. Started as the Romans and I had just upgraded my basic warriors to Legionaries, when Ghandi straight up announces to me and the world that we will bow to his nuclear missiles -_-' So while the world is still proud of the invention of the pointy stick Ghandi is discovering the secrets of nuclear fusion in his mud hut. It harkens back to a funny bug from Civ1. Ghandi was the only leader to have less than a 3 in his Aggression score. He had a 1. This made him extremely peaceful and basically the nicest guy in the game... Until the modern eras. As I recall, one of the techs related to Democratic Government lowered the aggression of the Civ that decided to take it by 2. If you have any understanding of how Hex works, you may see what happens next. Ghandi's aggression lowered by two and underflowed the value. This made his aggression roll back to 255. In Civ, the most warmongery of the warmonger leaders usually cap out at a 10 in Aggression.
Ghandi became 25.5x more violent then them. At that point, he went from being the nice historical figure he truely was into being an avatar of Khorne with a love of dropping atomic weapons on everyone that wasn't him.

I'm liking Civ 6 a lot, but one thing I am disappointed about is the lack of personal involvement in the science victory. Once again, they fail to recapture the wonder of achieving a science victory from the earlier Civs.
There used to be meaningful input in building your spaceship. You could decide to take a "Russian" or "American" approach to it by prioritizing efficiency over safety (because your spaceship might not even make it to its destination) or vice versa. When you launched your ship, you had to wait however long it would take it to reach its destination. Another civilization could conceivably beat you there even if they launched their ship after you, because they may have focused more on thrusters, for example. A lot of decision making emerges from the mechanics. Do you launch your ship early before it's completed because you might lose the race? These were meaningful decisions.
But now, as with Civ 5, you just build off a checklist of required projects, and the game is won as soon as they're finished building. The victory ends up feeling very flat, and is the most boring to work for. I really wish they would have harkened back to past Civs with the science victory.

I have some really stupidly petty gripes with this game. Mostly border related, I really don't like how geometric the borders are following the hex grid to a T except for different terrain like rivers and coasts. I really liked the round borders of Civ V it actually made me feel like I was building a country, and the minimap kinda bothers me too. Again too geometric and grid like. I like to look down on the map in the late game and see how far I've spread my influence and feel like I've accomplished something and I just don't think that's going to happen with he map looking like that. Another thing that is detremental to the feeling of "I've made an empire" is that the minimap now shows you your entire territory including all sea territories. That is something I can see absolutely ruining any feeling of accomplishment as a relatively small map with a buch of civs could soon turn into a mosaic of territory where you can't even tell what of that is an actual landmass. And the problem with the trade routes can be fixed easily by just bringing back the "Previous trade route" marking. I honestly don't know why they even removed that, I mean sure it's nice to consider some new options that might be better for you economically every time you review your trader but given the significance those units have in this game by being the only thing that can create roads, removing that piece of information could be potentially catastrophic. I seriously hope for some mods that can fix this but until then, good luck against Gandhi.

The many changes almost make me like Civ 6, but the fact that the AI functionally still cannot even pretend to play the game on the hardest difficulty setting is just a problem. I've pretty much given up on the Civ series. The core premise is great, but there's just so little difference between iterations. aside from the increased fidelity, there have really only been three actual innovations to the formula since CivIII... which is pathetic. It just gets harder and harder to justify the same irrational AI and pathetically limited diplomacy systems that are the same in each. ew game, let alone the lack of imagination regarding endgame scenarios, win states, cleaners, etc.

Play it for entire week, too many flaws. I liked Civ V graphic and art deco more, Civ VI graphic and UI just horrible, fog of war just annoying after modern era, tree tech just broken. How horse archer can be built without needed research of archery, that's fucking stupid. AI just annoying as hell, the worst one if AI go religion route and clogged the map with missionaries. AI will hate me for everything I've do and not do. The game does not feels rewarding, districts just useless most of time especially pre industrial era because bonuses just too low. Housing is just unnecessary merchanic burden, just there for sake of complexity. The game also punish me too hard for wage a war, this game sucks.

It certainly feels like an even harder shift to 'board game on a screen' - which is not a good thing. SBF's "four risky ideas" seem like veiled changes that exist for no other reason than the lead Dev is a board game fanatic: social policies are now some odd swappable card game for example, and the diplomacy has been completely gutted.
Civ needs some revitalisation but those changes need to be built on the problems of the previous games, not wild arbitrary shots in the dark in the hope they work with the old game mechanics - they don't... and the AI is still busted...

Artillery is a major counter to doom stacks in Civ IV. You can do collateral damage to the whole stack. There is no real need for 1UPT in my opinion, but it's here to stay so I accept it. Thankfully Civ VI allows for corps which is better than nothing.

In the podcast he even mentioned he avoids using the blackface with lipstick because it doesn't offend the other nations that much and still get benefits of being an old timer nation with the other nations.

I'm surprised you enjoyed the late game, Bunny. I've played one full run. I had a shot at science victory and achieved it. In order to do so it took me 150 turns of grind. Like, incredibly dull. No war (yes, I could have started one but it wouldn't have been in my interests.) I had deployed spies to protect my science and was constantly pestered to tell them to keep doing what they were doing. And, yes, as you say in the video, you have a lot of traders by then and so you are constantly having to retell them where to go.
So I very much enjoyed the early and mid games but the late game was so incredibly dreary that I think I may return to Civ V with the Community Balance mod. Or, as I have been doing instead: play Stellaris from Paradox.

The AI cheats so insanely ,even on King.
I've had AI's offering me all their GPT, gold and surplus luxuries/bonus resources to end a war they were starting to loose, only to trade with them a turn later, finding out they still have the same GPT available for other trades.
I managed to do another trade for about 200GPT from China AI and a third turn later, he still has about half of that GPT available. SERIOUSLY.
Also late game the AI trade logic is awesome. They eagely offer from 50GPT up to almost 300GPT for 5 or 6 different luxuries from you.
If you try to buy from them luxuries, they'll first ask all your GPT, gold and everything else tradeable, besides cities but you clear all that and give up about 20x less GPT and some 200-300gold, voila they agree.

I must say I disagree with the civics tree being a bad change I find it to be a much more interesting system than the civ V policies were and it means you have a bigger reason to care about culture even if you don't go for a cultural victory, I will agree the fact that you have to keep 'inventing facebook' is super annoying but the future tech has the same problem, they are set up like that because they are supposed to be for the score victory (serious who the hell plays with that, I always disable the score victory) but it should just be a simple "keep researching these techs getting more points every turn". Also you didn't talk about support units! That seems like a big change to just gloss over, I love support units, and the lack of them are going to make civ V seem that much lamer if I go back to play that.

The game is a lot different when using ludicrous-size (230 x 115 hex) maps
with true starting locations for civs and city states, and for resources.
The AI acts differently: more consistent, sensible and aggressive. It still has some senior
moments, but it is far better than on the small to huge maps that come with the game.

it be great if civilization implemented what I would like to call the propaganda meter that way if your citizens get really unhappy during a long protracted war you can actually pay in game gold for propaganda to be produced to get your citizens spirits up and more happy so you can stay in the war long enough to win. also you can also use propaganda attack against your enemy send planes over the enemy territory with propaganda leaflets and it might lower enemy morale.

The biggest beef I have with this game is the road system. How am I supposed to do war now, when I can't build roads to my enemy? Just send them a warning with a trade caravan? Yeah, there's a unit that can build roads, but it costs too much and does too little. Who thought two roads was going to be enough from a large investment in production, anyways?
Let me build my own damn roads augh!

    • @Suprentus
      @Suprentus 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Within the same post, you lament that you can't build roads to your enemy, and acknowledge that you, in fact, can. Also, traders don't cost much to make at all, and what else did you want them to do if they do too little? I'd argue that it's both faster and easier than ever to build roads to other civs. If you're waiting on building a road, would you rather dedicate multiple workers to take 30 or more turns to build that road (which can't even enter the opposing civ unless you have open borders), or would you rather a single unit achieve that feat in 10 turns and not even require exploiting the diplomacy mechanics? Laying down roads for war is faster and easier in Civ 6, not harder.
As an aside, you can build your own roads as well, with military engineers. You're just going to need a lot of them to make a road of any decent length.

So here Is my strategy in Civ 5 for destroying civs
step 1: get nukes on nuclear subs. Also put stealth bombers in nearby cities.
Step 2: Use nukes to destroy concentrations of enemy military units and cities if you still have more nukes to spare, than use stealth bombers to bomb cities. After all that, Your giant death robots or modern amour should be able to plow right through to the city and either annex it or raze it.
Step 3: rebase bombers and nukes accordingly and heal your modern amour every now and again. Than repeat this again.
Or if you don't have nukes yet:
Step 1: Amass a huge assortment of artillery and cannon units, rifleman/musket men.
Step 2: move this Army to the front lines(doing this over oceans is long and HARD).
Step 3: keep your melee units at the front while leaving openings in the artillery for more melee/artillery to come through. Than try to take on cities like this
Step 4: Since your units definitely aren't invincible, keep producing more. Much more.

So I am the only one who nonironically liked the new Civ VI artsyle? I found it so refreshing, with these cartoony stereotypes of world leaders and almost plastic looking assets. It really made me feel the ridiculous nature of the premise and how I was basically just... playing a game. No suspension of disbelief needed. I was trying to convince a broken AI to like me while rolling my eyes every time they made a mocking commentary in my debt and running a civilization like it was a huge working and producing doll house.
I always felt in old Civ games that the history baggage was kind of... obnoxious? Don't misunderstand me, I loved every bit of it, but in all games I couldn't but feel the game was taking itself a tiny bit too serious while celebrating the amazingness of humankind, and that made it feel a bit preachy. From the narrator to the quotes everything felt so "HUMANS ARE COOL!" that I could only rise an eyebrow at it. It was like, a pulp magazine but in graphic novel style, charming but a bit "meh, okay"
The new alien, weird, caricaturesque designs made feel that the authors are well aware that the theme of the game is not why we go for it, that we play it and love it as a game, not as a complex piece of subtle art critiscising or cheering on ever expanding empires. It was like the authors nudging and saying "Isn't it funny? You are an immortal ruler competing against other immortal rulers who take the personalities of big people of history to compete on a frantic race of who is the greatest by completly arbitrary systems by 2050!" And it works, it is campy as hell and that makes it even more charming

I'm glad you point out what anyone who has objectively played every previous civ game... Some things are flawed, but it's still probably the best Vanilla launch yet. Including 4 and 5.
It has most of the features that we found in CiV with all it's expansions. The AI isn't "great" but it's still commendable on some levels, it has improvements over 5 (it can move and shoot now), and considering the complexity of the new mechanics and how I don't even think the devs are 100% sure what is the most optimal way to play this new game, the AI is very serviceable.
I've been exploring this game for a week straight, with reading things on gaming forums, and I'm still discovering new ways to play or approach the game. I can't wait for people to start posting Deity challenge maps, or for the mod community to sink it's teeth in this game. I'm also looking forward to what the devs will add and change themselves.

Solid review. You didn't really mention difficulty when talking about the AI so I assume it's still the case that AI civs need to cheat on the higher difficulties. I'm pretty tired of this, they need to make some AI improvements. And if they can't improve the AI to make it more competitive at least try to make their actions fucking rational. From your review it seems like the AI is actually worse in terms of declaring war/denouncing etc for no reason. But I'm glad you mentioned how wonky the leaders look, I'm not really into the cartoony aesthetic and animations in general.

I both like and dislike the unstacked cities. Gameplay (and most importantly) I think its a great change, but I don't like how cluttered it makes the maps look. I kinda liked seeing a city surrounded by a bunch of farmland in Civ 5, it looks more natural to me.
