It's a good thing that one of his main criticisms is the lack of mid-level checkpoints, since that's been fixed now in the game. :)

10:31 Glad you liked my level, was a bit worried when I made it that people would hate the part at the beginning where you have to go through the underground section and wait for the switch to open up the pipe back up because it's time consuming. I wanted to have a little gameplay section explaining the concept to people who don't speak English, as a lot of Mario Maker courses assume you can understand the title. It's something Nintendo tends to do in actual Mario games.
The length was somewhat of a happy accident, as I quickly ran into the limit for enemies in a stage, which is also tied to the number of P-Blocks in a stage for some reason. I definitely didn't want to have it go on for too long due to the lack of checkpoints in Mario Maker.
Also you can actually get past that boo circle in two ways. Jumping in-between the switches is one way, but you can also do it by waiting for the gap in the boos and then walking off the ledge and dropping to the left of the left P-Block,and then kicking both switches to your left. That way's probably trickier though.

Hey, I 'm really glad you made this video George. There seems to be a huge difference in your inflection from the last several vids. You sounded like you really enjoyed yourself, and in turn it made this much much more enjoyable to watch! I love your critiques on the gaming industry, but sometimes it can get a bit depressing, so I'm glad you are doing things like this to lighten the mood :)

+snomaN Gaming Yea, he really does sound like he hates video games sometimes. But I still love his content even if it does sound a bit moody at times.

    • @SpartanWolf222
      @SpartanWolf222 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

+xisumavoid I think for the most part George was giving constructive criticism. For example, 15:48 to 16:00 as well as 5:50 to 5:55 and 6:48 to 7:20. Also, he gives some pointers for any future level designers for SMM by the Metroid-Mario levels when working with difficulty and no checkpoints.

I had fun with this. I sat through the whole thing and just listened. It was like a lecture on game design wrapped in a letsplay sensibility and I haven't seen anything like this before. It's a creative use of everything you had access to, and I hope you make more cool innovative stuff like this in the future. If I hadn't already subscribed, this would have made me do it in an instant.

Renegade Master Yeah, George manages The That One Video Gamer podcast. Jirard gets early stuff from Nintendo just like GameXplain and Jwittz.
The only videos I've seen removed by Nintendo were by a guy using their content creator program and were done in emulators which is a no-no.
Like I've mentioned various times else, I really dislike the Nintendo TH-cam stuff since it takes away from other bigger problems the company has.

2:15 - I get what you mean about 1-ups being useless rewards in Mario Maker, but I think the fun in finding secret areas is the actual discovery rather than the reward. Most secrets in 2D Mario games usually just give you junk like coins or an abundance of 1-ups, but that doesn't make figuring out how to get to them any less rewarding in itself.
Happy you gave it a shot though.

The attitude throughout this video is a mix of cynicism and fun which greatly reflects what I felt during the 100 Mario playthroughs. Most levels were skipped, died, given up on, and played through but never given a second thought vs a level that surprised you and made you want to respond in some capacity.

Just so y'all know, you can plug the level codes into the last part of the URL for the Mario Maker Bookmark site. Makes this a whole lot easier. Also, for the last one, there's an extra '6' in the last part of the code.

Great video and suggestions for level creators. My first level which I don't want to upload was a bit of a mess because I crammed everything I could. Less is definitely more. I am becoming tired of the 'don't touch anything' levels. If I want to play Mario; I want to play Mario. They are impressive on a technical level but the novelty wears off fast when you see dozens of them. I completely agree though that Mario Maker needs a checkpoint. Ive been making shorter stages to learn the assets but shorter stages also mean they are more accessible without checkpoints.

In my opinion, you seem to dismiss easy levels too readily. A level doesn't need to be difficult to be good.

+Nixitur I assume that if he said that the level was too easy, that it must have been completely brain-dead. Unless you played them and can say otherwise, then I'll shut up.

As the people over at Giant Bomb have said. The levels you really want out of this are the "well, that could have totally been in Super Mario World" (or etc). Yet those are also the hardest to find, given the lack of ability to easily search for keywords, or user names. The lack of ability to publish, say, a world-map with levels, or even just a 8-16 or whatever set of levels meant to be played in order (and keeping things like power-ups and yoshis and etc in mind).
This game is good, but it is missing so much that the romhacking community has used over the years to create some truly amazing things. He shows theses at the beginning (custom sprites, music, world maps, bosses, objects, scripts etc etc) but, even though clearly Nintindo would never let you, say, add Final Fantasy Battle Music as a background tune, or add in a Super metroid boss-rush (yup, those things exist, seriously go look at raocow's channel for a massive amount of such romhacks being played. VIPs being a good example). Even so, the lack of certain things leaves this a 4/5, instead of a 5/5 as far as abiltiy to truely produce good quality levels.
The game will still produce good content, for a long time, but the lack of the above features will, inevitably lead them to need to release either DLC, or Mario Maker 2.0. Else the best possible experiences will be limited to Romhacking and absent in the wider Mario Maker community.

You know that Polygon has a series right now where they ask Game Devs to make a Mario Maker level, maybe you should try those out.
PS: I recommend the one that is made by Koji Igarashi (Castlevania) and Derek Yu (Spelunky) they're a blast.

When you come to think about it,level design is extremely hard.I am currently working on a puzzle level, where different puzzles mean different consequences. But I saw that doing this was not easy. But overtime you learn more, and get better.Eventually, one of your levels will end up on top 100 starred courses! You just need to try.
