- This lecture is called: Godly Marriage and Virginity: Paths to Holiness and was given by Fr. Josiah Trenham and he is the Senior Pastor of of Saint Andrew Orthodox Church, Riverside, CA and the author of “Marriage and Virginity in St John Chrysostom“.
This is the fourth in the 2014 adult catechism series “Acquiring the Mind of the Church” hosted by St Barnabas Orthodox Church in Costa Mesa, CA.
“Loneliness is a consequence of the sexual revolution” and “young men are not prepared for marriage.” 😭😭😭
The sexual revolution promised freedom but the reality is that freedom is actually loneliness.
Hearing that the #1 cause of divorce went from finances to p0rn is heartbreaking to hear as a woman. Really touched me to hear him say there’s so many unmarried women due to men being stuck in their childish ways. May God free His sons so us daughters may be able to pursue marriage and family life.
Yeah, and sadly many Orthodox men even just wave p0rn away as if it's not cheating.
Social media usage is to females what pron is to males. As a man I find it incredibly difficult to find a female who is not addicted to things like social media and other electronic distractions. I agree with you 100% that males have a serious issue and taking responsibility and holding themselves accountable for things such as pron addiction but I daresay that females in our current day are not making things any easier when they self objectify so to attract as much attention as they possibly can which is no different from the intent of pron.
Amen, please pray for your potential future husband. The devil knows where to attack at single men’s weakness. These attacks hinder potential Godly families.
Also women are quick to hold men accountable for their faults, neglecting their own accountability. Be sure to check your own purity. Modern women aren’t pure like they used to be either.
Long story short, PEOPLE need Jesus. We need to help lift each other up 🫶
May God free his daughters too.
I am grateful to have found, in God and His Holy Orthodox Church, a way to live a holy life. This world, which is antichrist, would have me believe that the only way for me to be happy is to embrace my base passions and life a secularised life without regard for Godly things. As an Orthodox Christian who happens to be an inactive homosexual, I am grateful that my devotion to Christ is stronger than my romantic attractions to men. Rather than finding sadness in my attractions, I see it as a special cross to bear: a special blessing from Our Lord that has the potential to lead souls to monumental triumph over their sins. I rejoice to find the Angelic life of eternal virginity set before me, for my soul's desire is to belong wholly to Christ.
Holiness is more important and more beneficial than sexual fulfilment.

Any sin is hard for the transformed n the awaken but ultimately is the peace n fulfillment in living His Truth, His way n His life. I commend U n appreciate the sharing of your cross. This a wonderful. His teaching style is so direct and down to earth. I also appreciate his absolute fidelity to the truth. I am a Priest of the Anglican Church in North America and our beliefs are identical with Orthodoxy with regard to what this priest is teaching but I must admit I rarely hear this subject taught with such direct honesty. To often we are afraid of offending people and we tend to tip toe around these subjects. I appreciate Fr. Joasiah's ministry and I pray for him that God continue to use him greatly.

@@SeraphimGoose I would too. I was raised Anglican, and was Anglican even after my son was born, although I eventually had to stop going. When we had a homosexual male bishop, and they started performing gay marriage I was done. I am not anti homosexual or anything like that...I just believe the Bible indicates God's opinion on that issue, and I'm not going against it. I miss the Anglican service and hymns greatly, but I believe in following the scriptures, and so am becoming Orthodox,

Very interesting ! ! ! In the Bible, Jesus: "Said their is no marriage in the resurrection". Did you contradict him ? ? ? could you explain this teaching a bit better please ! ! ! My lovely wife passed after nearly 40 years of marital bliss. Could you kindly clear this up for me. Thanks Father Josiah. I am a catholic but I found a lot of truth in your teachings. I believe a lot of young people like me are confused, ignorant and misguided perhaps by modern way of life, perhaps by ignorance but I truly believe once you live as a Christian and have a Christian marriage you know in your heart that's your calling. I believe a lot of people attack marriage because they haven't been blessed with one. I feel happy to know that whenever I lose the path I have my husband to bring me back and it goes the same way around. It doesn't mean marriage is easy or a warranty for a righteous living but in my opinion is a true blessing, a true sacrament a true mystery. I hope you can bring more guidance in more videos like this. Thanks a lot.

Fr. Joasiah is an excellent lecturer and Priest. He is very inspiring and stands for what is True and Good! Thank God for Priests like him and may God grant him many merciful years.
As someone just returning to Christianity (just as an individual daily reading the NT) after many decades, having been raised in a near-dead denominational Protestant church, this man (imho) has a clear vision of what a Christian life should be; very uplifting (even for an old dude). Wish I had been brought up under such teaching. Glad I heard this, and other of his talks online.

We need more priests and pastors ready to speak the truth of the bible and the life of the saints, without fear. It is important to not just "tickle the ears" of those who want to only hear what they want, but hear the truth, regardless if they want to know about it or not. We are moving way too far from the life in marriage ,that we should have. Monastic life is "better" yet better to marry , than to "burn" with any passions. This should not keep anyone from being a Priest, if that is the "calling," as one should be able to have both I unison if the Lord wants it that way. If anyone can be a monk than this is right in the Lord and that person for their spiritual walk.. Yet marriage does teach so much in itself. It all depends on how you are called, and all are just as important, but important to stay true to God doing it, to the best possible.
I think too if someone loves their spouse they will love the in laws, no matter what because of the love o husband/wife and children. I think this world has forgotten how great grandparents can be for the family and help so husband and wife can have time together more. Also the love shown to all is because they love the one they married.
That would be fine and dandy but many in-laws don’t understand their place once the child gets married. Too many mothers have traded their spouses in for their child way past adulthood and that’s even more problematic as that leads to divorce as well
@@tatteddragonfly1 Confused in how the person with spouse and treating them as a child (which is terrible) but how is this hurting the children of the parents, or the in-laws? I think most parents want the best for their grown children but as all have been 'brought up differently' and what the parents learned and taught their children are not always what the spouse of the son or daughter, was taught, and this can cause the problem is how I see it. But they can still love them and care about them and show love, forgiveness and understanding according to 1 Corinthians ch 13. We never can be cruel as both parents are in the lives of the children/grandchildren. Abuse should not be tolerated of course, but they can be forgiven, and still know if they ask forgiveness and mean it, we need to allow this time to try again with them. We do this for our spouse because the grown child of the parents, does love them, and it hurts them to have this problem going on between a wife/husband and their own parents. It is upsetting for the grandchildren also, In the end adult married children will end up doing what they must, but the parents may have different thoughts or ideas and they have a right to not always agree and to just say what they are thinking. A suggestion can be allowed. We may accept it or not. But never to detriment of the children if involved.

I feel monks of course, are 'unmarried normally'. But not all monasteries are totally left to themselves, many bring in the public and are involved with people of the opposite sex and they do live often in the world more than the people within the church get to do. (they are often probably tempted more often this way? but they know it i all a test) They travel more and, anyway often it is not like they were 'off by themselves', where the monks do not see the public all the time.
But Priests in Orthodox churches, do not need to be if they marry''' before they are ordained''' as Priest. When young and beginning they may change the mind before becoming a Priest, but there must be a certain point to make up your mind. Some of the apostles, many really, were married! The women took part if they were able to follow along, and did help as needed (they are the 'help mates' after all!)
People can be called in various ways to serve the Lord, but we must be honest, and if anyone feels strong feelings toward someone, and not yet ordained, they must be honest and speak to the spiritual director , and marriage is probably the best. It is a 'sign they need to move on marriage'. If they feel more than just "feelings" of course. They need time to get to know the person and to be sure. Tests do happen and that is what they must prove they can pass the tests'' against the passions.,'' (At least until after marriage if this is the calling at the end before ordination" The spouse to be must be questioned as well as they must on board and support the faith of Christianity and know that first even their husband the Priest is married to the Lord and hey must be first to take care of the church and people but family too and hold well to both. They must know they will need to help the husband in ways needed and if they can with the children and maybe work too? They will not get the attention, and they must realize it may be a 'back seat" in many ways. They are to know the husband, the Priest, will hold many things inside and he is holding many of the people who are counting on him for answers to the faith. Well cannot explain my thoughts on it all, but this is what I have seen anyway, while we were taking part in church at a monastic church, with Priests and monks and the Priests of course, lived elsewhere with their families. Well some were Priest/monks, and did Not marry, unless before being ordained and living then if married they moved to another home they would have not at monastery, But at monastery some priests lived if they stayed unmarried, and never did marry before being ordained...,
The wife if they are married is the "help mate" as Eve was taken from the rib of Adam. She can 'walk beside him' and 'help him'. They must 'help each other.;'
All married people need to do this! Having their own 'Home/Church' in a corner of a room maybe, where they can worship together as a family? (*Not just church once a week, but everyday) Prayer's together and reading to the children, bible stories before bed, perhaps... that they could understand depending on age. And a bible, can be kept there and prayer book. Can have an icon even or a picture at least, of Jesus and his mother and patron saint? It is as you are pleased to do it. Even a hanging candle with oil lamp is fine, if you wanted to do this and felt comfortable. Can be anyway anyone wants it, even in bedroom. (Or closet if ventilated but would not try using candles ) lol
Various ways it can be done, The Home /Church needs to be'' Facing East, '' it is where they set them up normally. That is why even in Cemetaries the person faces to the East, as the Lord will have them rise up. as He comes from the East. We look to the sky. No person 'not' coming back, as Jesus left, is the true Lord. All will see Him!

On God's journey, and His name be praised for all the good and benefits that comes to His people (ALL) where ever they are, through the death of His Son. Amen
We don't pray to the saints, we ask them to intercede on our behalf.
Absolutely beautiful video and talk . I am a practicing Catholic a converted Catholic for 25 years now and I I'm so enthralled ,and motivated by hearing someone who who feels the same way as I do.
I take my faith in God and Christ and Mary and All the Saints seriously with loving devotion and great joy and this cannot help but manifest itself into my daily life. this is a constant struggle to help all my family . my marriage is beautiful.

Wonderful lecture! Alongside Fr. Josiah's deserved admonishment of single men (rightly so), It would also be beneficial to impress on single women what they are doing wrong or could do better, their adult responsibility (there are plenty of single women in an overly prolonged stages of adolescence) , as well as what they could change in their approach towards men in order to find a good spouse and enter marriage.
That's spoken about a lot in homilies and videos. Men rarely are addressed on this topic.
Either way, it's an equal and fair approach to address the part of adolescence of both men and women. It takes different forms. Not taking responsibility appears differently in men and in women. In the lecture men are mocked for playing video games while single and are blamed for not marrying women who are single in the church. How come we need to mock the men? It won't help them. It wouldn't be fair to mock women for their prolonged adolescence or mock their position of not being married. A bicycle has two wheels, both are broken, if we just focus on one wheel and ignore the brokeness of the other (and blame the first wheel) the bike will never ride.

Two things which I imagine that I have in common with Fulton Sheen are that we were both baptised in the same manner and we both follow the teaching of St Theodore concerning the Filioque. I will do my best, with the assistance of God’s grace, to follow Archbishop Sheen’s teachings, as described, in other matters.

@@Oremus333 Archbishop Sheen wrote nothing specific about the Filioque as far as I know. One source is St Bede's "History of the English Church and People" which mentions the Council of Hatfield of 680 AD.

Some people go online find a stranger, and hurry as soon as they get a twinge, of excitement, and marry them, and than soon divorce. Unfortunately a child my come from this relationship but the problems beginning with families not being families and split in two or more pieces. The children may feel unloved and unwanted nd it causes many problems. It is bad enough divorce can happen by problems arising , but to almost ask for it, is just not what our Lord would want of us. 'Unconditional ' love often is non- existent .
What if your father isn’t practicing Orthodox or you are estranged?

I think if single, you do need to give yourself to our Lord more, and serving people is serving our Lord. But mostly, maybe you are called to totally give yourself to our Lord alone more? Whatever you find yourself living in we must suffer in some ways and that is the calling.

No one is marrying or given in marriage if already married in the Holy Mystery (Sacrament) of Matrimony in the Church.
@@LadyMaria being "already" married on earth doesn't change what that verse is saying. The question asked of Jesus specifically pertains to the example of a widow who lawfully remarries. In this case which husband will she be with in heaven? The answer, as I have understood it, is that we are married to Christ in heaven, not our spouse.
@@theTavis01We only have one Sacramental marriage. It is not called marriage in the hereafter but the Sacramental bond remains forever. We do not have vows in our wedding services. That's a Western innovation.

It is just a few days until October at the time of writing, which is the Month of the Rosary. Please pray the Rosary during October for single Christians looking to find their lifetime partner, for newly-weds, for married people with young children, and for older married people. Please pray for those who choose virginity for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
Pope Francis says that Christians in Europe are heading for demographic winter. After the Rosary we can also say the Prayer for the Intercession of Saint Joseph which was introduced by Pope Leo XIII, and then ask for a reversal of this situation.
All these prayers can be tracked down on the Internet by highlighting the text of the prayer with your mouse, right-clicking and then searching the Internet for the highlighted text. There's plenty of useful research that can be done, and a valuable secular skill to acquire as well. I would be pleased to see other suggestions from Eastern Christians.

Father Josiah (or any Orthodox Father who can answer), if marriage does exist in heaven, then if an individual losses their spouse, can Orthodox Christians remarry? And if so, who are they united with in heaven? I love the Orthodox perspective on marriage but I just don’t understand how it can work under these circumstances.
I havent seen the entire video yet so he may speak on this but Paul said that there will be neither sexual relations nor marriage in heaven, for we will be like the angels.
He said couples would be welcomed in Heaven. It doesn't mean they're received in groups of two with their earthly spouses. No one is married in Heaven.

Side question - the Orthodox teach that Mary remained ever-virgin after the birth of Christ. However Matt 1:25 says Joseph had no sexual relations with Mary UNTIL she had Jesus. Can anyone (preferable an Orthodox priest or teacher) explain this. Thanks.

Hi Tina: good question really as it helps understand things in the Bible correctly. I believe that we need to read the Bible ( the right bible) but MORE importantly we need to learn and understand the Bible within our Church Sermons and dogma. So we must not take it word by word, and in this case St Joseph was assigned by God only to look after St. Mary and the Baby- Jesus. We can see, for example, in the Bible that when they found Jesus missed in the middle of their journey back from Jerusalem, St. Mary said this "why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere."

So you can see here that St. Mary said '' Your father and I'' BUT it does not mean that St. Joseph was his actual father as Jesus is the Son of the Almighty God. So those people who take this word by word only could argue by picking few words than the intended message. You can read ''Ezekiel 44 ''about St. Mary being a virgin for ever. Hope it helps somehow!

Tina-Shea Myrie Hi Tina! I am Orthodox and this is a good question. In the Bible the word "until" or "till" is sometimes translated "to" and is often used to describe a situation or state which actually continues after the event. In its usage here the event is the birth of Christ and the state of Virginity of St. Mary continues after the birth of Christ. Christ Himself makes references in other bible passages to a "door being shut". Likewise the door through which God in all his glory comes in, is then shut. No other human being could have come through that door. The Virgin Mary was the door though which our Lord came into the world. Also at the cross before Jesus gave up the spirit he looked to St. John the beloved and told him this is your mother and to Mary this is your son and it says in the Gospel that from that moment on John took her to his house. According to the Jewish culture and customs of the time, this would never have happened if Mary had any other children to take care of her. In the Gospels where references are made to Jesus' "brothers" it is not actual brothers as in children of Mary. It is close relatives probably cousins or children of Joseph from a previous marriage or other family members. It was very common in Jewish and biblical language to use the term "brother" to refer to cousins and other family. For example in Genesis Abraham called Lot his nephew "brother" and there are other references as well. I hope this helps to clarify things and answer some questions. God bless.

The Greek Orthodox and ROCOR is about the same? I think you are a bit more modernized? I ask as my husbands god-father is Greek but now is ROCOR Greek teacher for Seminary and monk at the monastery. I should ask him, but as here now, I was wondering, from your prospective, too ? He has sort of told us, he switched his Greek Orthodoxy as you were more 'modernized' ... than ROCOR Monastery/Seminary..and he became ROCOR, and is this mostly what the difference would be? ROCOR stands for worship and woman wear head coverings, and much more.

Without seeing the icons in the background (and hearing the affirmation of the Nicene creed), I would think this was one of the protestant sermons I grew up with every Sunday... The rhythms, the style, the voice, the accents and pauses, it is all too familiar... Not that he's staying anything wrong, but with my eyes closed, I'm feeling like I'm a kid again, bored and tired at Glendora Friends Church, listening to the pastor drone on, waiting patiently for the reward of cheap cookies afterwards.
You should read some of the homilies of St. John Chrysostom, perhaps the greatest preacher in the history of the Church. He would preach anywhere from the 30 minutes to 2 hours. It can help with attention span and also not attributing the good aspects of "protestant sermons" to Protestantism but realizing they are operating on borrowed capital. Or are you like the kid in Acts who fell asleep and out the window while listening to St. Paul preach? :-)

Father Josiah said that there are many true faithful Orthodox single women in his church to where it breaks his heart because he can NOT find any true faithful Orthodox men who are worthy to marry them. Make an appointment with Father Josiah.
Maybe the women who do not get married should give themselves to God totally? In the old days the family chose someone for the woman? If it does not work I guess I would think they should say "no, it is not working, or he would say it" Just 'my thoughts' that is all.
Women in Orthodoxy who chose not to marry do give their lives to Christ either as monastics or a Virgins in the World giving their skills to building up the Church. The Virgin in the World is very rare now as it is a calling harder than that of a hermit and very few are called to it.
The Church expects those who are not called to marriage to give themselves to the service of the Church. She also expects that of Widows (eather gender) if they are able but permits two remarages originally this was to support young Widows who needed the support of a spouse.
Men who do not get married should be monks if accepted, of course. Works both ways.

Fr Joseph is incorrect is saying consecrated Virginity is Monastic, it is not. Before Monasticism existed there were Virgins living in their parents home or small groups under the direction of the Bishop and Woman Deacon (often in her household) along with Widows who stayed as that. Both Virgins and Widows performed functions within the Church liturgical and can be considered a Minor Order, which fell out of use with the rise of the cenobitic monasteries. The Minor Orders of the Virgin and Widow are an aspect ongoing PHD research which is due to be finished in 2020.
The dedicated Virgin or Widow in the world still exists, most often seen as a Priest who is not married but not a monk. However there are others who have foregone marriage and remained in the world to build up the Church through their work in whatever they are gifted and in serving the Church. Dedicated celibates in the world often very dedicated Godparents and vital the running of parishes. It is possible to be a dedicated Celibate as a Virgin or Widow without being a monastic, it is hard and a special calling but still present in the Church even now.
Well said. The Roman Catholic church has consecrated virgins even today living in the world. They are not nuns and they report directly to the Diocesan Bishop.

St Theophan talks about this vocation in his writings on The Spiritual Life, but most of the writings on this way of life come from the early church before organized monastic communities existed. The vocation of Widowhood in service of the church still exists and can be seen in most established orthodox parishes we just do not realize that it is due to the quiet nature of the ministry performed by these older women.

@@theimaginator7232I went for confession on this matter and all the priest does is say how much Jesus loves you and how he forgives you. He speaks the prayer over you and then more peace is within you. Then you'll go to communion. It's that simple.

I agree that a young woman should have her father and priest to look out for her, but are women not able to practice any level of self-discipline?
people seem to be influenced by their environment heavily and the church has failed to guide people properly as one saint said.
Some fathers are extreme want want their child to find someone financially well off more than morals.
Society influences women the most to be materialistic and encourage more divorce rates which cause more issues when women get swayed so easy.

Greece for example is the most Christian nation yet close to half 45% of women have tattoos which is not Christian.
the Russian patriarch to some extent is going a better job than the Greek patriarch which is under the jurisdiction of Turkey rules which they decide who is patriarch and get paid by the church a lot to do business their and seems like a bad idea to have the head of the church in hostile territory.
Orthodoxy is a therapy for society and when the therapy does not work then that has to be examined it seems.

To say a woman's husband should be more important to her than her children seems to go against nature. As important, makes sense. More important? Not so much.
Try thinking this way. When children get older and leave their parents, you are left with your husband/wife which doesn't go away and stays with you forever and that's why your spouse is more important, because you always have him/her, but you don't always have your children
Also, children are given to you and you are somehow forced to love them(don't understand me wrong because i used the word forced), however, when you chose your wife/husband you chose them from your free will which is much more sincere

Two subsequent events, one external, the other internal, reduced the patriarch of Constantinople’s status to nearly that of a figurehead. The sword of Islam gave military protection to the center of the Eastern Orthodox world, but at a high price. The Muslim sultan sold the office of patriarch to the highest bidder and changed the occupants often to keep the money rolling in. From 1453 to 1923, the Turkish sultans deposed 105 out of the 159 patriarchs. Six were murdered, and only 21 died of natural causes while in office.
Another blow that weakened the patriarch’s authority came from Russia. Ivan the Great assumed the title of "Czar" (Russian for "Caesar"). Moscow was then called the "third Rome," and the Czar tried to assume the role of protector for Eastern Christianity.
With the collapse of the patriarchal system, the Eastern church lost its center and fragmented along national lines. Russia claimed independence from the patriarch of Constantinople in 1589, the first nation to do this. Other ethnic and regional splintering quickly followed, and today there are eleven independent Orthodox churches. The Russian Orthodox church dominates contemporary Eastern Orthodoxy, representing seven-eighths of the total number of Orthodox Christians.

One theological disagreement has to do with the Latin compound word filioque ("and the Son") which was added to the Nicene Creed by Spanish Catholic bishops around the end of the sixth century. With this addition, the creed says that the Spirit "proceeds from the Father and the Son." Without the addition, it says the Spirit proceeds from the Father.
Eastern Orthodox have traditionally challenged this, either saying that the doctrine is inaccurate or, for those who believe that it is accurate, that the pope had no authority to insert this word into the creed (though it was later affirmed by an ecumenical council).
Many today, both Orthodox and Catholics, believe this controversy was a tempest in a teapot. The doctrine that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Son as well as the Father is intimated in Scripture and present in the earliest Church Fathers. Controversy over it only arose again after the Eastern churches repudiated their union with Rome under pressure from the Muslims.
Eastern Orthodox often refer to the Holy Spirit proceeding from "the Father through the Son," which can be equivalent to the Catholic formula "from the Father and the Son." Since everything the Son has is from the Father, if the Spirit proceeds from the Son, then the Son can only be spoken of as one through whom the Spirit received what he has from the Father, the ultimate principle of the Godhead. Because the formulas are equivalent, the Catechism of the Catholic Church notes: "This legitimate complementarity, provided it does not become rigid, does not affect the identity of faith in the reality of the same mystery confessed" (CCC 248).
Today there is every hope that the equivalence of the two formulas can be formally recognized by all parties and that the filioque controversy can be resolved.
The Councils
A more substantive disagreement between Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox concerns the role of the pope and the ecumenical councils in the Church. Both sides agree that ecumenical councils have the ability to infallibly define doctrines, but a question arises concerning which councils are ecumenical.
The Eastern Orthodox communion bases its teachings on Scripture and "the seven ecumenical councils"-I Nicaea (325), I Constantinople (381), Ephesus (431), Chalcedon (451), II Constantinople (553), III Constantinople (680), and II Nicaea (787). Catholics recognize these as the first seven ecumenical councils, but not the only seven.
While Catholics recognize an ensuing series of ecumenical councils, leading up to Vatican II, which closed in 1965, the Eastern Orthodox say there have been no ecumenical councils since 787, and no teaching after II Nicaea is accepted as of universal authority.
One of the reasons the Eastern Orthodox do not claim to have had any ecumenical councils since II Nicaea is that they have been unable to agree on which councils are ecumenical. In Orthodox circles, the test for whether a council is ecumenical is whether it is "accepted by the church" as such. But that test is unworkable: Any disputants who are unhappy with a council’s result can point to their own disagreement with it as evidence that the church has not accepted it as ecumenical, and it therefore has no authority.

Yeah 😬 probably not his intent, but pretty cringe.
Why is it creepy? Father Josiah protected his daughter by setting expectations and a standard for the man who wants to be with her. There would be a lot less broken marriages if expectations and standards were higher for men and women before they even thought of getting into a relationship.
I really liked the lecture first, but the end made me really sad. I'm an orthodox christian and I'm dating an orthodox young man. But I don't understand the "how much do you produce question".. Why can't they get married and live together while being students. And why is the man who has to be the producer. And the second thing that I didn't like is the fact that a man has to be independant and become an adult. And women have to stay at home or stay with women before marriage. Why women can't live on their own waiting for marriage? Why don't give equal talk to both genders? Is it against the church? I don't think so..
It's a lecture. Specific cases are ruled out during presentation. If this lecture were given in my country, the issues presented would be totally different. He needs to adapt it to the majority.
