Yeah mine is not like that, also I believe the thumb stud acts like a blade stopper when the knife is open.( strengthening the lock up when blade hits something)
Nice review Sir. People complaining about the size; in a serious knife fight REACH is very crucial because your primary target is the opponents hand holding the knife. You NEVER engage if you did NOT strike your opponents hand/fingers FIRST. Good luck doing that with a 3 inch toothpick. I would not want a blade under 5 inches and carry the large Espada every day. IMHO its the best tactical folder ever made. People complaining about the steel; this is NOT a tool or kitchen knife. It is meant to be a serious weapon to defend your life and do some serious damage, if necessary. The pocket clip is great and doesn't telegraph knife. You could even carry it inconspicuously with dress pants. Now I have to get me this awesome Luzon. ;)
Ever watch Fred Mastro? Make your first cut your most effective cut there’s no need to keep fighting if it can be ended immediately.. aim for the neck and follow through
Got my cold steel luzon large in today no problems , it works as design . I dont know if Lynn Thompson intended the knife to be used like this but I can easily wave my luzon from my pocket just like a emerson pocket knife and I love it .
Have my Luzon Large for about a year now, and it still is one of my favorite knifes. I was trying hard, but I found no bear here around to check out bear stabbing ability. But it works pretty well for eating Polish Sausage and bread. Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed. Greetings from Germany!
I think instead of cutting up the thumbstud a better solution is to dremel a small slot in the handle where it touches. I think it's supposed to act as a stop pin for the close position but they didn't mill the handle deep enough. Any knife where you can catch the top or the edge in a closed position is poorly designed.
15 foolish people gave this video a thumbs down, because he told the truth. That mostly got this knife fixed and saved a lot of hands and visits to the ER. PLUS !!Plus they fixed it.
Hi Joshua I just received the Large Luzon today and it is awesome razor sharp and flips smoothly no issues with the point of the blade extending beyond the end of the scales or seating like the first production did which I returned once again thanks for the heads up :-)
You may have gotten a lemon. I was fortunate enough to get one and mine has none of the issues you describe. I absolutely love this knife I'm looking to get another one but they are impossible to find now.
I found one on Ebay the day you aired your video of your knife haul from blade show. They probably went there as well. It was the same model. I'll have to modify it. IM VERY HAPPY I WATCHED THIS. mine is on it's way as we speak.
You always give me a smile, sir! I can’t carry knives of this size but I collect a lot of different stuff. The thing I’ll say is that the protruding tip seems to be an issue with a lot of knives across the board of all price ranges. Usually you see it with a wharncliffe but it appears it’s possible with any blade shape!
I've only ever had that problem once, it was with the crkt M402, the ( large) thumbstud would catch on the pocket and activate the assist and pop open in the pocket. It was as you were placing it in the pocket. I did a psa on it because it was dangerous. Thanks for the heads up mr.slash.
I've carried an xl luzon for a year now. Its completely waveable if ur doing it with a strong pull. And like other comments they have fixed thumbstud issue.
I had a similar experience with my favorite cold steel knife, the Talwar. When closed the tip is not covered. I cut myself a few times on a completely closed knife because I would reach into my pocket for something else and as the edge of my hand grazed the butt of the handle, the skin could compress just deep enough to be cut by the tip of the blade.
You just may have saved us all from the “My new Cold Steel cut me within five minutes of ownership” posts on Facebook, was kinda looking forward to them. 🔪🔪😂😂😂
I just got mine & they must have fixed the problem because my blade is sunk into the handle enough so there's no danger of it causing any damage. I didn't know it had this flaw until I saw your video. That would be a reason to return it. I'm surprised they didn't catch this before it got into production. It's a monster & fun to do the Crocodile Dundee bit, "You call that a knife?" It's the only knife I know that flips open with a clunk.
I have one, and no issues you talk about are present. I think mine is a later release, but I can open mine w any of the 3 options pretty much effortlessly.i wouldn't have tried to change anything about it.. I've tested the secondary lock w my weight (185) and was pleased.. especially for 40$. Mine is solid af!
I must have gotten a second model. Mine has a deeper recess for the thumb stud so the blade doesn't show. It's my EDC, though I typically have four or five sharp tools on me at any one time.
I hope the reason these aren't out yet is because Cold Steel is working to fix this. I was going to get the large, to fill my need for a huge folder, but i got a Thompson Voyager for that recently. Still might pick a "medium" up. (might as well just call it the Micro Luzon, with that tiny 4" blade)
Same thing happened to me. ....it opened in my pocket, ,,,i reached in my pocket for some change and that sharp tip slid right through my big thumb muscle. .....it hurt
Thanks for the review Jimi,im still getting one but im going to wait a month or so,the way they are selling now hopefully Cold Steel will get it fixed soon..if they dont ill modify it.
Thanks for sharing! You may Dremel the upper flipper shark fin thingy like the snaggle tooth or Emmerson wave. That should help to quick deploy out of pocket. I ordered myself a medium LUZON, should come in this week. I´m planing to do the Dremel mod to my knife. Also, I discovered a good way to fix thumb stud issues. Let´s say it´s a small studd, with less surface for your thumb to get good hold on. Take these screw sets from MOLLE Tech Locks. They come in different lengh and diameter. Now you can vary the size of the thumb studd yourself until you like it 🙂 Regards from Germany!
The only thing is if you mod the liner/handle so the blade sits deeper, it's going to throw your detent off. The hole in the blade will no longer line up with the detent ball in the liner. 😕
That would be the case if the thumb stud was intended to be the blade stop in the closed position. There's no way to tell unless you can examine the knife to see if there is an internal blade stop. If an internal blade stop does exist then the thumb stub and or the handle/liner was poorly designed/clearanced .
It's possible there's an internal stop pin or something, but the fact that the detent works in Jimi's knife with the stud hitting the frame like it is indicates that the stud is likely the stop in both positions. If the stud were hitting the frame before it was supposed to, that would probably keep the detent from working also, since the blade wouldn't be going far enough down into the handle for the detent to engage. We'll have to wait for a tear down and see. edit: I see Jimi mentioned he's dremeled the knife and it works. Jimi, did you grind away part of the liner/scale?
Alex Jones I just received mine from Blade HQ today after being on a wait list. Mine does not have this issue at all so idk if they corrected it or if he just got a bad knife.
Man this blade design is cold ,but I personally wish Cold Steel would go back to the drawing board on the liner lock and re do it like the Ti Lite knives for more contact with the tang ,they can even keep the security secondary safe lock but put that folded type liner leaf spring on this monster knife and it would come back as the knife of the year, still a good knife just one that can be done better even with the issue that they fixed on the first run.
I have this knife and mine doesn't have the tip sticking out like yours does. I think that maybe yours might be a defect because my tip rests perfectly inside the handle. This knife fits perfectly in my pocket. I'm not a Folding knife guy, I love my fixed blades but aside from the Buck 110, This folder is the only one I will ever carry. This knife is totally worth the price. Great quality even though it's made in China. I don't mind the thumb studs and have no problem flicking the blade open using the thumb studs. I think the problem is you have really short stubby fingers. The handle is glass-filled nylon which is awesome. I'd buy it again.
The first generation had problems with the lock but the new ones are flawless. I just got mine about a week ago, it came razor sharp. Yeah it's a great knife.
That is one fine looking blade & I also like the big 4 & 5 " and especially 6" Cold Steel Blades ,can't wait until they are available again by Amazon.com
Hi Jimmi, The thumbstud isn't quite useless : when the knife is open it will perform as an aditional stop bar The real issue I think is the whole was 1 mm or so too far from the spine of the blade
That tip issue seems to be hit or miss. Mine is fine as there is plenty of space between the tip and the end of the handle since my thumb studs don't contact the handle. Snaggle tooth is the ticket.
Thanks for the review bro, I had my eye on one of these. I thought finally an XL I can afford, but nah ah ah after seeing this. I don't have a dremmel either
Very cool knife, but I punctured my thumb two weeks ago to the bone while reaching for it inside my pocket . (Before I saw your review about that problem). It's a good thing the tip is small so the wound wasn´t that big. Still I love the knife, just don´t EDC it on my jeans (I carry it on a jacket now for protection). And I bought a broken skull, which is the one I carry now on my jeans and it's a lot more comfortable. I love Cold Steel big knifes as they are effective protection weapons. I live in Mexico and it's very hard for law abiding citizens to have a gun, but I feel secure carrying around the Luzon. I hope I will be able to buy other extra large folders (I´m worried that Lynn sold it to GSM and everything is out of stock right now).
I have the ti-lite 4"-6", i have the luzon medium and the large is ordered lol definitely comparable in size to the ti-lite, with the medium Luzon i had no problem with carrying or opening as i pull it from my pocket. Joe X beat the living piss out of this blade, he also chooped down a tree with it lol. Im a few years after this video and it seems the problem you pointed out are fixed, although the one thimb stud is still there and is still hard to use the liner isnt in the way. Appreciate the video
I know flipper and triadlock do not work well, but it is sad see a liner lock on a cold steel model. Anyway that knife is illegal in my country, more than 11 cm long blade is not allowed. But well, it is a good self defense knife but... i think i prefer the ti-lite. Regards!.
I have 3 of them. I don’t see the need to do anything. It’s a flipper. The point is hidden in the handles on all mine. If you really pressed your finger in the end you might feel the tip maybe. I believe the knife is meant to be an easy open and close flipper and it is. Could it cut you hell yes it’s huge. It’s like the Xl Espada if you don’t learn to handle the thing it will cut you up good. The thumb stud works also but I think it would be used less often and it does require careful operation. It’s a huge flipping cutting machine. For the price it is what it is. It’s not an Espada or a XL Counter point. All mine are razor sharp and that’s exactly what they are a huge flipping razor.
Honestly, I think it'd be best to just grind down the spine to reprofile it from the swedge to the tip and take a couple millimeters off. That way the tip would be well clear of the end and sit a wee bit further in. If you don't have the tools I'd be happy to do it for you brother!
Saw that beast in the display case, but yo Papi ees too big! I love the blade shape and design, if only it came in something other than Family Size. Any backstory on the name? "We were in the back alleys of Luzon, when..."

I'm fucking jealous. I'm still waiting for my luzon. and very disappointing to know about the thumb stud and tip sticking out. I'll have to modify the stud once i get my large luzon
I ORDERED IN MARCH and still don't have mine. I WONDER IF ITS BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN FIXING THE ISSUE. Never should have LEFT the CHINESE FACTORY in that condition, who is doing QC ?
I had one on pre-order, and canceled when I started hearing about it's problems. It's a little crude. I don't like the looks of the handle. I do like the blade, and the awesome size of the knife. I may buy one (on sale)after they have removed the bugs.
They fixed the problem with the tip being to exposed when closed. The knives coming out of factory right now are good to go.
That's great! I need another one!
Yeah mine is not like that, also I believe the thumb stud acts like a blade stopper when the knife is open.( strengthening the lock up when blade hits something)
I would still buy it. Mods is no biggy

I think instead of cutting up the thumbstud a better solution is to dremel a small slot in the handle where it touches. I think it's supposed to act as a stop pin for the close position but they didn't mill the handle deep enough. Good information. I have to handle one to see if I really want one . Looks alone it's an awesome blade.
You are very knowledgeable. I'm working on my Dahmer series for academy. Fun for the whole family is my goal.
Lol!
I'm pretty sure the thumb stud is the blade stop in both the closed and open position.
That's what I've been told. Just a bit of work on the lockside blade stop made it all better, but I don't know how they are fixing it, officially.
Jimislash, good to know. I have a CRKT Otanashi noh ken with the same problem. I'm going to try your solution on that. Thanks
That's a great knife, too. It is the same feeling as that Luzon; just stabby. Good luck!
Good thinking, puncture wound victims will breath a sigh of relief!
I would probably give it a shot just because I like modifying knives. Thanks for sharing.
It's worth a shot if you like to mod knives. It's great outside the danger zone. :)
note that it's not just a thumb stud, but it might also server as the "stop pin".

Those thumb studs are the open blade stop. Just Dremel the handle/scale for clearance.
I was concerned about Dremeling into the lock.
The only thing is if you mod the liner/handle so the blade sits deeper, it's going to throw your detent off. The hole in the blade will no longer line up with the detent ball in the liner. 😕

I bought one at Blade Show.
I preordered in March too 😑
I broke the clip on my Luzon 4 times now. Does anyone know if someone makes a steel clip for cold steel knives to replace the plastic clip?
Can’t wait to get mine! Amazon just needs to get their sh!t together
The thumb studs are for the blade stop... see how the blade thumb studs fit snug against the liner.... 😎
Thank you!
@@Jimislash no probs mate.. theres also bearings in there... for that smooth ezy deployment... should have mine nxt week.... i cant go without one a these handswords...lol... im gonna slightly customise mine a bit too
Few silver skulls on the handle etc.. custom chain lanyard aswell.. really good design.. when applied.. theres no way that knife is coming out of ur hands.... cheerss mate!!... all praise the hand sword!!!... lol 😂😎
Still can't find these anywhere. I'd like the smaller one. Can't stand that steel anymore....but I'll make an exception.
I'm fucking jealous. I'm still waiting for my luzon. and very disappointing to know about the thumb stud and tip sticking out. I'll have to modify the stud once i get my large luzon
Well, I have heard of some of them arriving ok. Maybe they are fixing them.
Jimislash ahh ic. thanks for the reply. I hope mine comes in perfect. I'll definitely give u feed back once i get it
It's cool looking.
I almost bought a Luzon, thanks for the review, I better stick with my 4 and 6 inch ti lites, they still are a better option than the Luzon models
If you have those, you are way ahead of the Luzon crowd.
Sharpened on the BEAR'S FEMUR!!! I had to subscribe!!!
:) Thank you!
absolutely no problems with mine
Great! They fixed them.
Definitely needs to be addressed!
I ORDERED IN MARCH and still don't have mine. I WONDER IF ITS BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN FIXING THE ISSUE. Never should have LEFT the CHINESE FACTORY in that condition, who is doing QC ?
I have no idea. I picked this one up at Blade Show. I did receive an email this morning stating that the owner is aware and fixing the issue.
I waited months as well & received it today & it does NOT have the issue that the one in this video had. So you should be good to go 👍🏼
I can't wait to get this knife. I have 2 cold steel Ti-Lite 13in knives.
I want another one. It's pretty cool.
What is the blade grind ?
I'm not certain, but they do a lot of hollow grind over there.
I ended up getting two. One for my back pack 24/7. The other for my pocket...if I feel like a carry for that day...
No tip problems...
Nice! They fixed that problem a couple years ago.
Isn’t the thumb studs on this one also the blade stops
Yes.
that is folding bowie man
I had one on pre-order, and canceled when I started hearing about it's problems. It's a little crude. I don't like the looks of the handle. I do like the blade, and the awesome size of the knife. I may buy one (on sale)after they have removed the bugs.
Yeah, I am with you on getting one after the bugs are worked out.
I just got one from blade hq and it doesn't have this problem. They probably tweaked it after 1st production run
I need to get another one. I really like it, outside the laceration possibilities. :)
I'd still buy it.
Thanks for the review, you made up my mind. I'll stick to my voyagers and ti-lite and skip the Jesus palms trying to get this thing out of my pocket.
I like it I'm getting one
Great! I will get another one, so you don't feel like you're the only one getting knives. :)
That is big!
