Oh my daughter loves the skull! She is 4.5, and has actually stolen the skull I got from art school and slept with it on the pillow next to her, just like the little girl in the story!
Not creepy looking at all, haha!

Anyone that likes the vibes she was explaining when talking about the Hyunam-Dong Bookshoop book should check out the Japanese show Midnight Diner! It’s about a diner that’s only open after midnight and each episode focuses on a a customer that visits the diner. So good, so cozy and simple. A really great watch!

I disliked most of what I had to read in college for my English degree, but you just reminded me of how much I actually ADORED Christina Rossetti. I picked up a gorgeous illustrated edition of the Goblin Market last year and I thought about it for days and days after! I’ve revisited it many times since reading. Not only for the stunning words, but the gorgeous flowers lustrations in my copy (it’s set out like a children’s book).

Have you ever read A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos? I dove into her books this past summer. It may very well be the best fantasy series I’ve ever read. And the vocabulary is stunning-it was translated from French and although I had to look up a lot of words, I so enjoyed the characters and the language. And it’s one of the BEST slow burn, enemies to lovers tropes ever told.

I finished reading this series this year! I read the last two books this year and was so glad I read them. Such a unique world and story that I adored.
Also the satisfaction of the slow burn romance is something that I don’t know if I will ever feel again it was long but so worth it.

I loved Goblin Market when I read it in college. It was absolutely my favorite classical piece of literature we went over, with second place going to Frankenstein. I know there's a bunch of symbolism and meaning about temptation and blah blah blah, but for me, a YA fantasy author, I was like GOBLINS. FRUIT. CONFLICT. YESSSSSS. xD

We read Goblin Market in my Victorian Lit “Sex and Work” class. We analyzed the poem through that lens, taking into account Rossetti’s religion and refusal to marry. From that perspective, the poem could be read as a chastity poem, about not selling your body at the market. One girl sells her hair, then becomes consumed by the “fruit” that she tastes. The other remains chaste and saves her fallen “sister”. Basically, it’s a very Victorian poem promoting lesbianism as a way to fulfill sexual desires but still remain unsullied. Reformers (like Rossetti) would read this poem to homeless girls and sex workers. This is one of those poems that I read on my own and thought, “that was cool,” and then read in class and said, “wow, I really did not see that coming.” Also, reading it alongside Karl Marx’s capitalism ideologies really brings out the capitalist themes of the poem.

I wrote a paper on this poem for my Romantic Lit class and I was shocked how much I loved it yet how weirdly sad it made me. It felt a little like Spirited Away, it felt dark yet whimsical.

I went to the little bookstore Gertrude and Alice’s it’s the most characterful little bookshop in the world and by the sea here in Sydney. This little goblin market book was the first thing I found there and I fell in love with the antiquated look of it too. But oh gosh I didn’t buy it, and now I regret that so much. Ive always loved the Pre raphaelite circle too of which her brother and her etc etc belonged too as well.

Christy, your video is a breath of fresh air! Your selection is so thoughtful and it's clear how much passion you have for books, illustration, and all things creative. Watching your video inspired me to share my own favorite reads of the year on my channel. Like you, I cover a mix of books and creative pursuits, but with a special emphasis on how literature intertwines with daily life and personal growth. If you or anyone here loves exploring the intersection of reading, creativity, and everyday moments, I'd be thrilled if you visited my channel. Your content, especially your insights into writing and illustration, has been incredibly motivating for me. Keep up the amazing work; your channel is a true inspiration for creatives and book lovers alike! ♡

I absolutely hated the ended of Piranesi because to me it just dropped flat. She wrote the book to explore the place, and I feel like the story was an afterthought. The weird capitalisation was for naught. Idk, it was like 2.5/5 to me. I had high hopes. yMMv
