Christy, I started binging your lovely videos shortly before you finished Project Teacup, just after finishing a narrative nonfiction manuscript of my own. Our query journeys have run parallel- and your honesty has been such a balm to my heart in the waiting. I had "the call" with an agent last week, and now I am hoping that the same happens for you! I and your other committed viewers believe in your persistance, passion, and skill. The right agent will too. ❤

I love talking about process, and your comment about your notebook was highly entertaining to me! Every time I get a fancy, beautiful notebook for stories, I end up being too intimidated to put anything in it, or too conservative about _what_ I put in it, in case I mess it up! My go-to notebook for starting a new novel is an 80-page, 3x5-inch spiral bound memo pad that costs 80 cents and can fit in my purse! 😅 What a beautiful example of how different writers think differently, and how completely personal the whole journey to find your process can be!

I think it's a Belgian invention, from the Flemish area which is why the name is Dutch. I randomly went down a bit of a Spiegeltent internet wormhole recently. 😂 It sounds like there was quite a lot of fun queerness and gender-bendiness at the peak of Spiegeltents touring Europe in the 20s and 30s. Lots of famous artists performed in them too, like Marlene Dietrich (a queer and gender-bendy icon 😉).

I love it when authors talk about second and third manuscripts. Right now I'm researching and planning the second draft of my horror/dark fantasy novel and I'm enjoying the process even more than writing the first draft. I know the characters a lot more, I know how the story is going to develop and most importantly: Why I want to write it. Sure, writing a first draft can be scary and exciting, you're still just meeting the world that you've created and it's always going to be a little bit weak compared to the evolution of the tale; but in the second draft I find I'm a lot more attached to the characters and overall, writing improves a lot more. Plus, the feeling of nostalgia and missing that world after letting it rest is just extremely powerfull in order to write it better.
    Good luck with Proyect Spiegeltent!!

Christy, how do you determine the wordcount for a book upfront and why is this important? I get the following topics around structuring it correctly, but what's the reason for 80k words (in this case)?

    • @christy-anne-jones
      @christy-anne-jones  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Because Spiegeltent is more literary-leaning than Project Teacup (which is commercial fantasy). And the reason why it's more literary leaning is just because it's set in Australia and it's magical realism--so it's a target audience thing. Typical literary novels and general fiction novels (so NOT scifi, fantasy, romance, etc.) also just tend to be around 70-80k mark generally. For fantasy, publishers let you have them a bit longer.
Basically, certain kinds of books are expected by publishers and audiences to be certain kinds of lengths. Also, I want to know upfront bc it will affect how many narritive threads /sub plots I put in.
Also i want to try my hand at something smaller :)

Editing is writing but it's not pulling out that initial thread of story. So I don't count it as writing in the same way in such a situation as doing a vlog about "Writing using the habits of Stephen King" ....because you don't have to sit there and wonder what happens next, because you have the draft there

So, if you use that logic, does it not count as writing if you have a plot outline? I think we all have different processes which are of equal value. All that matters in the end is that you find what works for you personally

I assume you're saying that all parts of the process are of equal value, therefore they are all "writing" generally. But by this logic you could have woken at 5 am and done dot point plot outlines for WIP's....
The various processes use a different part of the brain, so waking up early "in the habit of Stephen King" (for example, who writes in one draft) to engage imagination for storytelling a draft is completely different to waking up and plotting or editing, worldbuilding, etc.
I think you were referring to me in this video though, when you mentioned it, but I had been referring to the writing habit vlogs specifically, so it was out of context.
Anyway....glad to see that you are working on another WIP while querying.
I hope you get some good news soon. ✨

@@starklingspars8956 Nope, not referring to anyone specifically. I've gotten the comment a few times. And I think there's a general misunderstanding from a lot of people new to writing that the first draft is 99% of the work. For me, it's only the first 20%. That's my main point. For me, editing is no different to writing the first draft--it's all creative, imaginative hard work. Especially because I rewrote every draft for Project Tea Cup from scratch.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your support. Take care and all the best with your writing 💛

I'm not a new writer lol. This draft is book 4 for me, but the second one I'll query. Just for the record. ✨
