Known as Chinese Lanterns, or Sky Lanterns depending on where you live, these flying lanterns are absolutely beautiful and amazing to watch. People worry about them starting fires, but that just isn't the case if you launch them in appropriate locations -- which is almost anywhere there is no brush or trees or buildings. Many places on planet earth qualify as excellent lantern launching locations.
Once a lantern is launched, it rises on the hot air trapped within the paper envelope. When the fire source burns out, the lantern falls to earth. So the fire safety of these lanterns is ensured. Only the remains, paper and bamboo, return to earth.
There are festivals where thousands of lanterns of launched at one time. The site is incredible to behold. New Mexico has a huge lantern festival every year, as do other locations around the world.

Sky Lanterns, more commonly known as KongMingDeng was invented by the Chinese as War signals along with the kites. After the warring ages, these lanterns were used during Chinese lantern festivals to carry messages and hopes to the God above. These lanterns spread from China to most of Asia and even to Brazil! These lanterns also than became the prototype of hot air balloons.

Be sure you launch them in a safe place.
Better to use the ones that are all bamboo (hoop) and string (biodegradable).. the wire one's are an issue for wildlife. just saying. Also, remember physics.. the lift (hot air) has to exceed the weight. The only variable int he equation is the weight of the fuel cake. I find that if you trim a bit off each corner, maybe a 1/4 inch.. it will fly sooner and again, physics.. just as high.

Preheat for a few minutes using the blowtorch before lighting fuel. Lasts longer, goes way higher.

Nice video. I brought few of them and tried to make them fly, but it's too windy here. I thought I'm doing it wrong. But nope, it's just because of the strong winds my lanterns are not flying

Sir I have a project on making sky lantern. I have made it with butter(tracing) paper. Only fuel is needed to make it touch the sky. I just want to know that could I use any other homemade power(fuel) source instead of that which is provided with that of ready-made. Please help me to complete my project.

@PRATHEEMA.B Balu the middle wires support the fire cake -- the square part that you light with the torch is the "cake" in the middle. The round wire is the "hoop" that the paper lantern is glued to.
