This video first shows how to use a leader retriever and then uses a disassembled 35mm cassette to show how the retriever works inside the film cassette. This disassembled view explains why the retriever works like it does.

Nice! Yeah, that's a key part of the process otherwise the tongues won't grip the film properly.

YES!!!!! This was the video I needed. Once I understood how the tool works, I was able to get my stubborn leader out of one of my cassettes.
A tip: I pulled back the A and B combined sliders really slowly, for as long as I could see the spindle turning on the cassette. As the slider got about 50% of the way I could see the tongues losing their grip, so I pinched them with my fingers and coerced the leader out - finally.
mine is also a heap of garbage, also when you are tightening the spool on the first tongue you have to go two clicks because it seems to click on the very start of the leader closest to the cartridge. took me 5 attempts even after watching this video because i needed to wind it just a tiny bit further lol

I originally had the Kaiser retriever and never could get it to work. I then switched to a Samigon Pro (AP) and it works every time. Avoid the Kaiser retriever at all costs. The quality of the retriever really impacts how easy it is to use.

After inserting the second tongue I turned it counterclockwise a little more, feeding into the "sandwich" effect. That worked after many failed attempts.

Apparently film development labs like it when they get film with the leader out, and it would be useful if you ever wanted to partially shoot a roll in one camera and then reload it in another to finish it off. I can see a place for this device for me. Great video.
Thank you and that does make sense about the labs. It saves them some time (though my lab indicated they have a machine that does it automatically for them, which is neat and I wish I knew what it was.)
Yeah exactly. I use it when I'm taking a flight, and there is film in my camera. My local airport doesn't hand check cameras, only loose film. So to avoid the film being blasted with x-rays, I reel the film in and take it out of the camera before security.
This film picker makes everything much easier, because now I don't have to time my rolls of film to my travel schedule.
It is also possible to take an old piece of film (hiopefully not with any good pictures.) turn the little knob on the cassete until it clicks and then a tiny bit more, then wet the emulsion side of the other peice of film, stick it into the cassette push it in a bit and keep turning the knob slowly, just a little bit to make sure the film gets pulled in (which means it is stuck to the film in the cassette.) Then you quickly pull the film out and you (hopefully) have your leader back. Not as easy but it works (usually.)
Yeah, I got that to work once. :D I did really want to show that for this video but couldn't get it down.
I can do this for a roll that's full of film but not for a used cassette bought from a film developer off ebay that has a very short amount of film attached to the spool, any ideas on how to retrieve a very short amount of film?
You probably won't be able to retrieve that, unfortunately. If the film was trimmed to have just a short leader and that was rewound, these are unlikely going to be able to retrieve that because they need a decent length of film in order to grip and pull the film out of the cassette.
There is a method where you use an old piece of film, lick it, insert into the cassette about 2cm/1" and then pull it out. It usually works, but these leader retrievers are far better and much less frustrating. Ah I see everybody else has made the same comment- well, I'll leave it. Definitely invest in one of these retrievers though, they work 99 times out of a 100 rather than the 75 our of a 100 that the lick method works.
That messes up the felt on the cassette, not recommended if you reload your cassettes. Granted loading bulk film isn't as worth it as it used to be.

After inserting the first tongue, I don't have a clicking sound when tensioning the roll for the second tongue.
Your film may be very tightly wound. Some films are like that. Try spinning it the wrong way when the first tongue is in, just a few turns, and see if that helps.
What if I don’t hear a distinctive “click” while turning counter clock wise?
After you slide the first tongue in, try turning the film spool as though you were going to force the leader out through the felt. Turn it until it stops turning easily and then back it off a half-ish turn or so. Then insert the second tongue. If there's no second click and the leader isn't leaving the cassette, the film likely has a memory built up from storage and is really tightly wound around itself.
@@DavidHancock still no luck. It might be too tightly wound. I accidentally reminded the lead while it was in my camera and then I spent an hour trying to wind it out by hand before trying a film retriever tool.

Unfortunately, film leader retrievers almost always fail with 24 (or less) frame rolls of film. There's simply not enough tension to pull the leader out of cassette.
Concur. This is a lot harder with 24 and 27 rolls then 36.

Well I just successfully retrieved the leader from a 24 exp roll 3 times (in 4 attempts) just now, so I confirmed this method is reliable.
(In case it matters, the device I'm using is the one made by 'ars-imago', which is the most minimal design basically consisting of two curved blades)
So, follow instructions as normal but with these key details:
A) maintain slight upward pressure from the underside of the device. This will flare the bottom blade downward. You'll get a louder 'click' this way
B) once you hear the 'click', turn the nub CLOCKWISE a few turns. This will feed more of the leader between the blades of the device. Be sure to maintain upward pressure on the device while turning the nub
C) still maintaining the slight upward pressure, NOW push in the tab of the device. The leader should now be sandwiched between the blades of the device
The final step is key:
D) begin SLOWLY working device out of the canister, making sure to maintain PRESSURE on the two blades with thumb and forefinger. It's important that the pressure is applied as close as possible to the felt of the canister the entire time the device is being withdrawn. Imagine the "sandwich" you created, and you need to keep the "bread" held together so the "ham" doesn't just slip out

For a reason, I cannot turn the film to hear the click is very tight
You may need to spin the core in the wrong direction some number of times if the film is spooled too tightly. It can also be hard to retrieve if the tip is curled.
I just lick a piece of old film and insert it into the cassette, then yank it out and the end of the film inside comes out.
Definitely not as elegant.
I tried to get that to work for this video, but never could.
If you ever had any good images on your film it might be worth it.
