We all know what Japanese are capable of considering their islands mostly have mountains and no land for agriculture. They still managed to have order and cleanliness with such a huge population. However, strategically speaking, Russia and the whole world does NOT need US military presence so close to Russia. So they islands must stay with Russia.

Resident of Japan, here. I'm not some kind of right-wing nutter, but in all honesty, it sounds like the people of the Kurils would benefit greatly by having the territory reincorporated into Japan. Now that Japan officially recognizes the Ainu as the indigenous inhabitants of Hokkaido and the Northern Territories, I don't see what the problem is.
The problem is that Japan lost II.w.w. and price for lost war is usually lost of territory. When Russia was defeated in russo-japanese war in 1905, Japan took southern part of Sakhalin for 40 years and they lost it again as a consequence of lost war. Asking to get back some land like this is same as Germany would demand to give back Pomerania or Silesia, or Italy would demanding back of Slovenia and Croatia. Its just absurd, but in case of Russia it look somehow completely ok to ask for us to give back some land. It will never happen, learn to live with that.

These islands were first soviet and then they were invaded by japan prior to world war 2. Then they were invaded by the Soviet’s during world war 2. Sakhalin was split between the soviets and Japanese. I think in half due to some treaty as a result of the Russo- Japanese war. I then think prior to world war 2, japan invaded the other half. Seeing it as valuable and saying what are they going to do. The Soviet Union invaded it during ww2 and kept it ever since. It is kind of surprising they haven’t tried to claim it. They can’t try to claim any other territory that gained prior to or during ww2. They might as well go for broke on this. They can try to claim both and even if Russia gives even the Kuril Islands or Sakhalin would be worth it to the heavily populated, dense country of japan.

Japan and Russia had non-invasion treaty but Russia broke it as soon as they saw Japan was loosing during the WWII. 2. And let's not ignore the fact that almost 80% of Japan is uninhabitable. They have a very mountainous landscape. Just looking at a map of Japan and you can see that Japan is overcrowded in its habitable areas besides Hokkaido. Overall, the conflict is mostly not about population, but national security and economic interest. Also, all countries look to gain more territory geo-politically, thats just how things go. I don't think it has happened yet but I do think all island nations will try to expand soon enough when water starts rising. Russia is definitely not gonna be as big as it is now in the future

Japan itself also controls a chain of islands that go all the way down to Taiwan. So what? As for the Kurils, you do realise the problem isn't Japan but its puppet master! If Russia ever relinquishes the Kurils, guess who is going to build military bases there, right off the Russian main land, to challenge both Russia and China? A referendum should be held in Kurils as to whether the islands should go to Russia or Japan. They are demilitarized and have US bases (a key strategic ally) in a couple locations by choice to defend, if needed, from China and North Korea (but also Russia if pressed). In my opinion, each island should have a referendum about whether their own island wants to stay with Russia or join Japan. The inhabitants that didn't get their way should have the chance to move to an island that is part of their desired country. This should be a choice and the government should help these people financially. The people who want to stay should be able to. This shouldn't be about the greed or influence of governments, but about the will of the people.

It's obvious the Russians wouldn't vote to be part of Japan cause they have no connection to Japan. It will be waste of money and time to organize that referendum. The outcome is already known the people will vote to remain in Russia So I don't think the referendum will solve anything. Maybe diplomacy will help resolve the issue but I think the reason Japan want all their islands back is because they never signed any treaty with Russia that suggest that Japan have agreed to give those islands to Russia. The issue is very trivial and I hope they will one-day find a lasting solution to the problem so that they can both signed a peace treaty.

Resident of Japan, here. I'm not some kind of right-wing nutter, but in all honesty, it sounds like the people of the Kurils would benefit greatly by having the territory reincorporated into Japan. Now that Japan officially recognizes the Ainu as the indigenous inhabitants of Hokkaido and the Northern Territories, I don't see what the problem is.

The problem is that Japan lost II.w.w. and price for lost war is usually lost of territory. When Russia was defeated in russo-japanese war in 1905, Japan took southern part of Sakhalin for 40 years and they lost it again as a consequence of lost war. Asking to get back some land like this is same as Germany would demand to give back Pomerania or Silesia, or Italy would demanding back of Slovenia and Croatia. Its just absurd, but in case of Russia it look somehow completely ok to ask for us to give back some land. It will never happen, learn to live with that.

Sakhalin was split between the soviets and Japanese. I think in half due to some treaty as a result of the Russo- Japanese war. I then think prior to world war 2, japan invaded the other half. Seeing it as valuable and saying what are they going to do. The Soviet Union invaded it during ww2 and kept it ever since. It is kind of surprising they haven’t tried to claim it.
They can’t try to claim any other territory that gained prior to or during ww2. They might as well go for broke on this. They can try to claim both and even if Russia gives even the Kuril Islands or Sakhalin would be worth it to the heavily populated, dense country of japan.

Japan and Russia had non-invasion treaty but Russia broke it as soon as they saw Japan was loosing during the WWII. 2. idk why russia's mainstream populous is so highly against giving the islands back to japan...look at a world map, and those islands should obviously be japans. its straight up mean to take them from japan lol. russisa is alrady HUUUUUUUGE, so idk why russia wants those islands so badly. i guess having them gives tighter control to that eastern sea??? but they could just control it fine from the other half of the kuril islands. idk lol. the whole thing just seems extremely petty of russia. the only real argument russia has is that russian citizens already live on the islands. but they should have never been established there to begin with cuz japanese literally already lived there and they were forced to leave by russian military. it all seems messed up lol and i understand why japan is so mad about it lolz. just my outsider opinion.
Japan itself also controls a chain of islands that go all the way down to Taiwan. So what? As for the Kurils, you do realise the problem isn't Japan but its puppet master! If Russia ever relinquishes the Kurils, guess who is going to build military bases there, right off the Russian main land, to challenge both Russia and China? Which Russian in their right mind would ever entertain any possibility of that? If Japan really wants those islands back, then it is going to create the geopolitical conditions that even make such an idea possible. And as a puppet of the US, nothing is possible for Japan.

A referendum should be held in Kurils as to whether the islands should go to Russia or Japan. The result will be 100% Japan as Japan has the best passport, per capita GDP of $40000 and is a developed country without alcohol problems. Being a Japanese is much better than being a Russian-compare the treatment of each in outside countries .Japanese money is still fiat currency(although such times will end some time from now) while ruble cannot be used outside.Once Kuril is returned to Japan, the ethnic russians there will be eligible for full passports and not some kind of alien passports/travel documents. Neither Russian nor Japanese are international langauges like US English ,Chinese,Spanish or Korean.

@@21boxhead Japan is not under US control. They are demilitarized and have US bases (a key strategic ally) in a couple locations by choice to defend, if needed, from China and North Korea (but also Russia if pressed).
The Russians have a strange habit of demanding other nations change their entire foreign policy just to suit the Kremlin. Why would Japan abandon it's long-term alliance with the US? That would be a conscious choice to weaken itself at the very moment China is becoming more aggressive in the Pacific.

In my opinion, each island should have a referendum about whether their own island wants to stay with Russia or join Japan. The inhabitants that didn't get their way should have the chance to move to an island that is part of their desired country. This should be a choice and the government should help these people financially. The people who want to stay should be able to. This shouldn't be about the greed or influence of governments, but about the will of the people.
Japan wants the Island and the sea around the island. They want all the Russian to leave and move in Japanese migrants.

Here is the case the islands are occupied by Russians so what's the point in organizing referendum?
It's obvious the Russians wouldn't vote to be part of Japan cause they have no connection to Japan.
It will be waste of money and time to organize that referendum.
The outcome is already known the people will vote to remain in Russia
So I don't think the referendum will solve anything.
Maybe diplomacy will help resolve the issue but I think the reason Japan want all their islands back is because they never signed any treaty with Russia that suggest that Japan have agreed to give those islands to Russia.
The issue is very trivial and I hope they will one-day find a lasting solution to the problem so that they can both signed a peace treaty.
