Breezy? From FF8? Hell yea dude!! I’m an amateur guitar player even though I’ve been playing for almost two decades. I love the hell out of it but I just have never been able to improve much past a certain point. Even trying to follow all of Sams advice. But Breezy is a song I worked on nearly every day for a few months. I still struggle to play through the whole thing without messing up once, but it’s such a fun peaceful song. Thank you so much for posting this. Barrios got me back into playing classical guitar after stopping (mostly) for over 20 years. For me it was the Opus 8 No 3, I just love playing it. Definitely not ready for La Catedral but it's a nice long term objective. Your channel is of one the things that keep me motivated to practice. Very grateful for your content.

You introduced me to Barrios when I was watching one of your Super Guitar Bros streams years ago. You were playing Vals no. 4 and I asked what song it was and I decided to learn it. It's become my most played song as well =)

Great selection, Sam! I share most of your favorite tracks, especially "Capricho Arabe" and "La Catedral" I would personally add "Koyunbaba" by Domeniconi, "Usher-Waltz" by Koshkin and "Tango en skai" by Dyens

All this classical stuff is amazing! Anyway, here's a few from my list, in no order whatsoever: -Bouree - Bach -Gargoyales, Angels of Darkness - Rhapsody -Crazy on You - Heart -Big Love - Lindsay Buckingham (acoustic version) -Never Going Back Again - Fleetwood Mac (also acoustic) -Gormet Race - Sam Griffin (cover)
Great video Sam, I love your video game content but it's a treat to hear you play classical pieces. For me, it's not really a list but mostly a song, and it's Capricho Arabe. This song was out of my reach, but it's the first song that I dedicated myself to, sat down and grinded, and really really practiced for. It's definitely the piece that improved me the most as a guitarist.
Mangore is on the 50,000 guaranies bill. I lived in Paraguay for five years.I perked right up when you mentioned him even though I didn’t know he was so renowned the world over.
For me La catedral, Las abejas, capriche arabe, sunburst (Andrew York), Villalobos etude no.1 and 3, Koyunbaba (Carlo Domeniconi), Tango en skai ( Roland Dyens)
1. All of the Jack Johnson Songs - they teached me basic melody within chords, plus they have a good vibe and are chill to sing to. Especially Banana Pancaces, f-Stop Blues 2. Starway to Heaven - : Not much to say, we've all been there. 3. John Butler - Ocean : Opend my mind for different tunings. It was way over my skill level, but very fun to learn. Nice to explore the sound and the possibilities. 4. Classical Gas : Introduction to Fingerpicking. I've discovered Tommy Emmanuel and wanted to play his stuff. Although I don't like this piece that much, it was a good start and fun to play 5. Haba na Haba / To be or not to be : Everything from Tommy emmanuel and his master Chet Atkins. Tommys music is so full of love for the guitar and they inspire me to this day on. 6. Innocent - Joe Hisaishi (Arrg. by Hernán J. González) : The Ghibli Scores were my introduction to classical guitar. I've never intendet to play classical guitar, but by playing arrangements of Movie and Game music, I slowly became unknowingly addicted to classical guitar. 7. Kass Theme - Sam : I'm really glad to have stumbled upon this crazy fella. This Piece gave me the confidence to really get into classical guitar. Once i've learnd Kass theme it was the first Piece in my repoirtoire. Revali and Mipha shortly followed. I'm still working on the Phrasing and try to give them my own touch :) Really nice arrangements! 8. Julia Florida - Barrios : Thank you for showing me Barrios and Tarrega! I fell in love the second i heard you play the first few measures. Now I'm like a lovesick teenager trying to hear and play everything from these two. This Piece is especially lovely and kinda reminds me of chopin. 9. Capricho Arabe/ Recuerdos de la Alhambra - Tarrega (Love the Brandon Acker renditions) : This is the crazy good stuff. Working on these two to sound nice and flow easily. (especially the damn tremolo :/ ) 10. La Cathedral - Barrios : My long term goal and final Boss. It's really fun to play, but im not there yet (mov 3 is pure flex and expression ) Thanks for the inspiration, i would really love to see more videos like this. Keep up the good work, I love your Arrangements :)
Hey there Sam. Swedish sub here. Great video, as always! Anyway, about the "going from suck to sick" concept: I've been playing guitar since 6th grade and I'm 33 now. So that means that I should be really "Sick" at guitar right? Well, not really as much as I want. So what I am thinking is that good musical genes might play a big role here. That and how young you are when you start to play. But, what I've learned is that I appreciate the music that I write and play, dispite not being as good as, for example you. I'm like a snes game that is running on a nes hehe. The software is present, but the hardware struggles to keep up with the framerate.
The first song I was determined to learn to play, a couple years into learning guitar: an acoustic version of "Pardon Me" by Incubus. Some complicated hand shapes were the main hurdle, but I practiced for weeks and mastered it. Still a top 10 favorite song to play.
so glad you ended the way you did. La Catedral has been my goal song for classical guitar since I first heard it a few years ago. Working my way there, but man is it tough. So fastttt
I suck at classical guitar, but i really like playing " Mood for a day " by Yes. It's the closest i got to playing something that includes some nice bass + melody features on guitar.
Been working on these songs like you’ve recommended and you are right it deff ups your skill level Also your one video of how to position guitars and what not helped me ALOT
This was very interesting. I think a lot of guitarists identify with your journey, regardless of level. I also started arranging video game music as a result of my own. Especially Nintendo music, with its ragtime-like base and syncopated melody. I still suck, but my list goes like this: 1. Anonymous Romance: found an old broken guitar at home with some tabs to an easy version of it in the case. 2. Bach, BWV 995 - Gavotte I and II: blew my mind you can do multiple voices on guitar. 3. Bach, BWV 997 - Gigue & Double: spent 2 years playing Bach 4. Piazolla, Verano Porteño: found tango after trying to playing Barrios and Tarrega 5. Lauro, Natalia and Andreina: easier to play but have interesting rhythm 6. Dyens, Tango en Skai: I really wanted to play this because of the runs 7. Bach, BWV 1006a - Prelude: I transferred to guitar after playing violin for many years 8. whatever I'm currently learning/arranging, mostly video game music. Some video game music even taught the angle of my right hand was wrong. then there are several pieces I have intermittently been working on for years. 1. Tarrega, Recuerdos: one of the first pieces I tried playing, was not prepared. 2. Barrios, Ultimo tremolo (una limosna): tried playing this because I couldn't play recuerdos, was not prepared. 3. Barrios, La Catedral: also one of the first pieces I tried, was not prepared. 4. Villalobos, Etudes: I should practice more
Awesome. The Cello suit piece I played when I first applied for university. I'm still playing the Villa-Lobos Etude. The Barrios Vals no 4 I played on my graduation concert. La Catedral I still keep coming back to. These days I only play my singer songwriter stuff. But man! Thanks for this walk down my memory lane! And you're a brilliant guitarist. Just found your channel. I'll enjoy it!
I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH 4, 5, and 8 From The Jungles of Paraguay was my introduction to Barrios in high school, and it changed EVERYTHING for me. He is my favorite composer for guitar, and that too is an objective fact which the world cannot argue. I learned all the songs from that CD, minus a few exceptions. I refuse to learn La Catedral unless i obtain the John Williams arrangement.
Man, I remember watching you go through all this. We would spend a month or two not seeing eachother, because that's how we rolled and I'd come in with some weird-ass music and I'd be like what are you listening to nowadays. When I had last left you it was Rage Against the Machine, the One Armed Scissor people (At the Drive In?) and then, that day, it was, like, y'know, Bach... Miss you bro, love you.
the first song that my dad wanted me to learn was stairway to heaven! im so sad that everyone's sick of it! 10 years running, and im still not! i go back to it every now and then!
I also fell in love with Barrios's guitar work. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it or play it. I especially enjoyed "The Great Paraguayan: Guitar Music Of Barrios" played by John Williams. Such a great album. Great content on this channel, Sam!
Sam, From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being so generous and so open about your methods and your knowledge. Most guitar players I know try to bury the treasure and hide their personal techniques, but not you. You go out of your way to teach everything you know... And you do that while looking awesome from your sick mullet cam!
Thank you for making this video! I’m always looking for more classical guitar music and don’t really know where to look sometimes. Awesome insight into some of your favorite pieces :D
my 8 songs are of course Smoke on the Water Smoke near the water Smoke around the water water with smoke on it Smoke on water Sneed on the Feed Chuck on the Suck 035
no freaking way!! classical gas is one of my absolute favorites. i heard it when i was a little kid and could not remember it until last year when i rediscovered it. I’ve been playing it ever since and it’s such a blast to play.
I was actually pumped I ended up having 3 of 9 of the songs on your list down already. Basic math tells me I should be 1/3 as SICK as you...and yet... sadly I've realized that 90% of classical guitar SICKness is flawless tremolo, and that is a mountain I will just never summit. Shit is IMPOSSIBLE. That's why I've got much respect for the SICK-ASS skills you've honed, sir (and for your judicious use of said skills to absolutely DESTROY that BOTW Rito Village arrangement), such an inspiration!
1. Mary had a little lamb 2. Twinkle twinkle little star 3. The birthday song 4. The abc song 5. Smoke on the water 6. That one song by black sabbath 7. A part of the intro from stairway 8. Power chords
I learned the Bach cello piece and Capricho but I mostly stuck with Brouwer. I have add and I know more "first page of the song only" songs that I had to keep looking to find complete pieces I could get though. Le Catadrel, I never even tried it. Well I tried the first four bars, too hard for me but i too love Barios , that Williams CD, I had it too. I think he does and did play Barrios better than anyone on a recording I can find, so that Williams album is a staple for me I got into classical guitar from a Time Life Segovia album, and Bream's Guitarra. I used to watch Guitarra in the late 90's over and over and over. You like Bream right?
Awesome video man! Watching you these past years I always asked myself which were your favorite classical songs. I would love to see you cover these in separate videos.
I love this video! I just started learning classical guitar after a 40-year career as a symphony clarinetist. It's a challenge, for sure! I lifetime of finger habits have to get erased and re-written. But, I love it! BTW - your instrument sounds awesome. Can't wait for you to post more.
I’ve been playing since 1991 and have been toured US/Europe/Warped Tour/etc.. and I still suck (good at punk/alternative/metal). Just bought a classical guitar to practice from scratch and actually get good.

Same here - heard it on the simpsons in the mid-late 90's! Lisa needs braces! Dental Plan! Lisa Needs Braces! Dental Plan! ROFL. Never used Limewire tho.
Bro, we need more players promoting classical guitar like this! Major props for doing this. Albeniz's Leyenda and Aguado's Rondo could keep the sickness going.
I absolutely loved this video. I never knew you were such a Barrios fan, he was not only one of the best guitarrists ever, he was one of the best composers ever... "El Bach latino" that's how my composition teachers refer to him.
1. Lagrima, Capricho, Recuerdos 2. Tango en Skai and Muerte del Angel (and stupid as Asturias) 3. Then I found out who Brouwer is and did Zapateo Cubano, Etudes Simples, Decameron Negro. 4. I'm a late bloomer on Barios somehow, but Catedral and Limosna. 5. And finally... your arrangements.
Well my list is: -Lágrima - Francisco Tarrega -Romance de Amor -Saltarello - Vincenzo Galilei -Odeon- Ernesto Nazareth/Dilermando Reis -Névoa - Samuel Cardeal -Chuva - Samuel Cardeal -Basin Street Blues - Spencer Williams -Alla Pollaca - Ferdinando Carulli -Gavotte- G.F Handel -Gangplank Galleon - Super Guitar Bros (The first song i learned by ear! Both guitars)

All this classical stuff is amazing! Anyway, here's a few from my list, in no order whatsoever:
-Bouree - Bach
-Gargoyales, Angels of Darkness - Rhapsody
-Crazy on You - Heart
-Big Love - Lindsay Buckingham (acoustic version)
-Never Going Back Again - Fleetwood Mac (also acoustic)
-Gormet Race - Sam Griffin (cover)
My favorite Sam Griffin video! Awesome. I too am a Barrios fan. Loved what you said about these songs. I learned a lot Dude. Thanks
Great video. Wonderful to hear about a bit of your personal journey with the classical guitar.
Broo.. The 3rd movement of La Catedral!
What have I just listened to, just immense
How about Gweelie's theme?
You're amazing at the guitar btw
For me La catedral, Las abejas, capriche arabe, sunburst (Andrew York), Villalobos etude no.1 and 3, Koyunbaba (Carlo Domeniconi), Tango en skai ( Roland Dyens)
1. All of the Jack Johnson Songs - they teached me basic melody within chords, plus they have a good vibe and are chill to sing to. Especially Banana Pancaces, f-Stop Blues
Although I don't like this piece that much, it was a good start and fun to play
(especially the damn tremolo :/ )
10. La Cathedral - Barrios : My long term goal and final Boss. It's really fun to play, but im not there yet (mov 3 is pure flex and expression )
Thanks for the inspiration, i would really love to see more videos like this.
Gracias Sam, tuve un mal día, pero la música es mágica. Y alegraste mi noche!!
I still don't get how you are so underrated, you deserve more views and subs
Thanks for this Sam. You’re an inspiration to me learning hobby guitar but I want to get as good as this. Professional skill
Classical gas was my first "complex" song, and it taught me a lot of very good techniques trying to learn that song!
Been working on these songs like you’ve recommended and you are right it deff ups your skill level
Also your one video of how to position guitars and what not helped me ALOT
This was very interesting. I think a lot of guitarists identify with your journey, regardless of level. I also started arranging video game music as a result of my own. Especially Nintendo music, with its ragtime-like base and syncopated melody.
I still suck, but my list goes like this:
1. Anonymous Romance: found an old broken guitar at home with some tabs to an easy version of it in the case.
2. Bach, BWV 995 - Gavotte I and II: blew my mind you can do multiple voices on guitar.
3. Bach, BWV 997 - Gigue & Double: spent 2 years playing Bach
4. Piazolla, Verano Porteño: found tango after trying to playing Barrios and Tarrega
5. Lauro, Natalia and Andreina: easier to play but have interesting rhythm
6. Dyens, Tango en Skai: I really wanted to play this because of the runs
7. Bach, BWV 1006a - Prelude: I transferred to guitar after playing violin for many years
8. whatever I'm currently learning/arranging, mostly video game music.
4. Villalobos, Etudes: I should practice more
Hi Sam! Te sigo desde hace mucho tiempo! Soy paraguayo y me alegra saber de tu admiración hacia Agustín Barrios y sus obras. Saludos desde Paraguay!
I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH 4, 5, and 8
From The Jungles of Paraguay was my introduction to Barrios in high school, and it changed EVERYTHING for me.
It's weird how he never commented on this
This is exactly what i needed. New projects. Thanks. I really love you choices, bonus points for La cathedral.
the first song that my dad wanted me to learn was stairway to heaven! im so sad that everyone's sick of it!
Sam,
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being so generous and so open about your methods and your knowledge. Most guitar players I know try to bury the treasure and hide their personal techniques, but not you.
You go out of your way to teach everything you know...
And you do that while looking awesome from your sick mullet cam!
I just wanted you to know that you have two songs that made me sick, Donkey Kong’s Jib Jig and Super Mario Bros 2 Overworld
The moment you throw an album of these songs on iTunes, I will download them so fast Sam.
I’ve played that Barrios tune lots of times but never in that speed. Now I’m inspired to get faster 👌 The first Barrios tune, that is.
Thank you for making this video! I’m always looking for more classical guitar music and don’t really know where to look sometimes. Awesome insight into some of your favorite pieces :D
The acoustic Animals album, by This Town Needs Guns, is the thing that has leveled up my playing, Chinchilla especially
Romanza, breezy, dimension breach, Walt for zizi, and a few works in progress have really helped out my playing.
This is such an awesome video, thank you man
my desire for a nylon has never been higher, but also I know I can never learn those insane fingerings, the classical left hand chords are insane!!
When I heard "Bachianinha nº1" for the first time I had the same experience you described here 0:33
A few songs that really pushed me was "Usher Valse" by Nikita Koshkin, "Idylle por Ida" by John Duarte, and "Mysterious Habitats" by Dusan Bogdanovic.
Can't believe you blue balled us on the best bit of Classical Gas.
Hardcore
my 8 songs are of course
Smoke on the Water
Smoke near the water
Smoke around the water
water with smoke on it
Smoke on water
Sneed on the Feed
Chuck on the Suck
035
You smoke too much
The ONE (1) (one) song that brought me from SUCC to SICC was Wonderwall. Bro, that Em7 chord.
Man I knew you were going to include "Capricho Árabe", that piece is soooo sick 😎
This is so good, it’s hilarious and educational, I’m here for it 👏🏼
no freaking way!! classical gas is one of my absolute favorites. i heard it when i was a little kid and could not remember it until last year when i rediscovered it.
1. Mary had a little lamb
2. Twinkle twinkle little star
3. The birthday song
4. The abc song
5. Smoke on the water
6. That one song by black sabbath
7. A part of the intro from stairway
8. Power chords
Man, this feels so personal, got to love it. Greetings from Spain
I think he does and did play Barrios better than anyone on a recording I can find, so that Williams album is a staple for me
I got into classical guitar from a Time Life Segovia album, and Bream's Guitarra.
Love your passion! My favorite recording on the planet is the GSI recording of Andrew York's "Yamour".
I’ve been playing since 1991 and have been toured US/Europe/Warped Tour/etc.. and I still suck (good at punk/alternative/metal). Just bought a classical guitar to practice from scratch and actually get good.
For me
Night of Nights - Touhou Project
Satori's Maiden 3rd Eye - Touhou Project
U N Owen was her - Touhou Project
J S Bach - BWV 997 Double
J S Bach - Bourée
Scott Joplin - The Entertainer (Chet Atkins Version)
Sergey Rudnev - Ragtime (friendship)
Sam Griffin has the editing prowess of Brutal Moose.
Thank you for this video Sam! This is very enjoyable and gave me a lot of great artists to check out!
Love ya Sam - your videos are always funny, and simultaneously musically excellent. You are a gift to the You Tube.
This.
This is all I've ever wanted from TH-cam.
Thank god this exists.
Thankyouthankyouthankyou
I've been loving all the classical guitar themed videos you've been putting out. Haven't seen anything else like it on youtube!
wow, did not expect to see Remembranza on here. This song got me into learning classical guitar and still keeps me practicing in the hope that soon I can tackle this piece.
I first heard Classical Gas on The Simpsons. (It was the dental plan episode.) I also downloaded it on LimeWire lol
Same here - heard it on the simpsons in the mid-late 90's! Lisa needs braces! Dental Plan! Lisa Needs Braces! Dental Plan! ROFL. Never used Limewire tho.
Dam, lovin this content with story/commentary. Really hope you do more.
Bro, we need more players promoting classical guitar like this! Major props for doing this. Albeniz's Leyenda and Aguado's Rondo could keep the sickness going.
I thank you for introducing me to Agustin Barrios. I feel as if I now have just discovered music!
I absolutely loved this video. I never knew you were such a Barrios fan, he was not only one of the best guitarrists ever, he was one of the best composers ever... "El Bach latino" that's how my composition teachers refer to him.
1. Lagrima, Capricho, Recuerdos
2. Tango en Skai and Muerte del Angel (and stupid as Asturias)
3. Then I found out who Brouwer is and did Zapateo Cubano, Etudes Simples, Decameron Negro.
4. I'm a late bloomer on Barios somehow, but Catedral and Limosna.
5. And finally... your arrangements.
I couldn’t believe that your father worked with Lee Roy Parnell, whom I worked with doing an educational guitar course a few years ago. Blew my mind!
Well my list is:
-Lágrima - Francisco Tarrega
-Romance de Amor
-Saltarello - Vincenzo Galilei
-Odeon- Ernesto Nazareth/Dilermando Reis
-Névoa - Samuel Cardeal
-Chuva - Samuel Cardeal
-Basin Street Blues - Spencer Williams
-Alla Pollaca - Ferdinando Carulli
-Gavotte- G.F Handel
