Well that may be just a cover story, but after all, what there is to steal from some castaways - but the shrinks on the other hand... charge far too much for their services. So, I could even think about leaving their ship for the poor folks on that island... gaining access to all that wealth.

      @elisapavez2625 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      They're explaining the model, not saying they agree or disagree with it. Also, as always, things are most complex than people care to explain, this kind of "models" are just a way to make it easier to understand reality. It's a given that that's not all there is to it. If you start by saying, "things are just too complex for us to reduce them to X", you wouldn't get anywhere.

    This video completely misses the point of the Big Five Personality Traits. I think condensing these traits down into one singular caricature [for each extreme] is misguided and a poor representation of what the BFPT actually tries to measure. It's more of a spectrum where people can be more or less open, conscientious, extroverted, agreeable, or neurotic. I don't know how you would condense it into a five minute video and a metaphore, but it's definitely not this way.

    Big Five is not the one personality a person has but all 5 on different %tages. So instead of being 100% neurotic or 100% openness, it does not mean that other traits they have are 0%. Instead all traits are from 0-100% and you are not fixed on being only 1 personality as video portrays, but rather all 5 of them on a different scale.

    This was an awesome way to explain the five personality traits. Prior to this, I watched videos that would explain it in a long-winded and yada-yada way. Using a narrative-style to explain the five personality traits is so much easier to digest.

  • @boondockdan
    @boondockdan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    A decent introduction. However, it is too simplistic to describe "traits" as if they are types. The difference between the Big 5 traits and Myers-Briggs style types is that five traits are an interacting complex of 5 spectra which can be further subdivided into 10 aspects. Myers-Briggs types, on the other hand, are more of a fixed set of characteristics... which erroneously leads to a simplistic view independent of the situation. The unique situation causes the complex interactions of traits in which the personality will emerge. To think in types rather than traits is vulnerable to false dichotomies and/or the binary bias.

I am finding my way too, because life often feels like a burden and I hate my workplace too, full of mean and manipulative people. But I refuse to give up. I want to study something either creative or something analytical, something computer related, because I'm trying to find a profession where I don't feel I'm suffocating. @Jokaanan 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Your experience hints at what Big 5 actually means! This video is confusing... please do not think that a separate persona for each trait accurately represents the Big 5 model. You are multiple traits, all of them, all at the same time. For example, you can be highly neurotic and highly conscientious at the same time, and your neuroticism will shape the way in which you are conscientious. Conscientiousness is misnamed; it doesn't actually refer to the emotion of *caring*; rather it is a catch-all term referring to a person's organizational and attentional abilities/skills/habits/preferences. The video portrays Conscientious girl acting out of "concern", and the artist always draws her with a frown. If someone feels emotional concern and worry which drives them to organize, manage, and check things, they are both conscientious and neurotic. Therefore Conscientious girl is not a pure model of conscientiousness - she represents at least two traits, maybe more!

  • @erwinlommer197
    @erwinlommer197 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd imagine it would be far more useful to describe people as sets of skills in different situations than personality types. After all our personality changes based on what kind of childhood we have for example. Similarly we act different in certain kind of situations.
    Someone could be very shy and introverted with strangers but open and extroverted with people they know. Some other person may be an extrovert but due to strict and disciplinary parents they could be extremely closed and nervous.
    The issue I am trying to showcase here is that in my mind a personality is a set of skills and genes. So when people take the big fice personality test they tend to see the results as rigid descriptions of themselves. But instead if you treat the big five just as skillset and learned behaviours then you also know you can change them. The nervous person could learn to control her feelings but she doesn't know how. Just like the agreeable person doesn't know how to set limits or the introvert doesn't know how to interact.
    For example as we grow up we learn all kinds of coping methods. When we get older we may start to think that our coping mechanisms are our personality when in fact it is a learned behaviour that could also be extremely harmful.

    Organizer and agreeable are needed in that situation. Necrotic is us all. As for those two ships: the first would stop and take notes on their experience. The pirates would plunder whatever resources they got and may even put the islanders out of their misery while at it. It all depends on how many agreeable people you got in your group. They can always elect another leader to get things done.

    Very beautifully designed video, though I have to make one correction concerning the content! This means that everyone is (to a degree) Open, concientous, extraverted, agreeable and neurotic.

    It's a good interdiction to the big 5. I think any one wants a more detailed look into it Jordan Peterson has a lot of material on this subject. I do know that in psychology it's one of the more sound theories. It doesn't explain everything about an individual, but does account for some of the variables of a individual's consciousness and perception of reality and Identity. Good work in my opinion.

    High quality video as always Sprouts but I really miss the emphasis that a person is analysed for ALL parameters.
    You don't just have a conscious person, you would have a person who is for example:
    1) slightly lower than average on openness
    2) noticably higher in consciousness
    3) low in agreeableness
    4) slightly higher in neuroticism
    ..all based around a norm

    • @sprouts
      @sprouts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Pikmania, thanks for the feedback. I can totally empathize with your critique. A character who is showing a natural mix of all traits would have been more natural, and thats how I started writing my script too. But then I realized its gonna be really complicated to explain each trait itself if they are interconnected in one personality. Also, how not to be bias then? I know lots of artists who are really open, are highly neurotic and low in consciousness- but that combination of traits is a very subjective experience of mine. And not a reliable one, since openness usually doesn’t go with neuroticism. You see how complicated it gets? So I decided to go for the representation of each trait alone. But if the request is high I might write an extended version ;)

    • @ThePikmania
      @ThePikmania 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sprouts thanks for your detailed response. You seem to really love storytelling which I think can be a good way to introduce an idea emotionally which is powerful.
      It's probably more fun too than just a bulletchart of facts. The later one has the advantage of being more precise and faster.
      I think that the 5 personality traits are relatively easy to grasp so maybe one scene would have sufficed. That would probably requiere a different scenario.
      Maybe show the advantages and disadvantages of each characteristic in a job environment and for relationships?
      You could use two persons who have a mixture of the traits. The traits are corelated to each other but still there probably exists a person for every possible combination. Your impression of your artist friends is probably right, maybe you can change one trait like from introversion to extraversion or from low to high conciousness to make it less stereotypical, artists like these definitely exist too :D
      Wish you a nice day and success with your channel

    These personalities are like ingredients or spices. No single ingredient makes a personality. It’s always a combination of more or less of one ingredient and one flavor that makes the difference in each the dish. The question is what constitutes the ingredients (fundamentals) and what the spices (accents.)

    I took the test and I scored high in extrovertedness and openness; my agreeableness was above average as well. The problem is, my neurotism was quite high (which is a bad thing) and my conscientious was extremely low.
    The reason why is because I have ADHD and I have no idea how to control it. No matter how hard I try, I just can't make my racing mind calm down nor can I organise myself properly. Which is a shame considering I had good scores for my other traits :(

    I mean, if you simplify it down to having a trait, having its opposite trait or being in the middle of the 2 then for 5 traits there are 243 different personalities, and these are just the biggest factors, certainly not the only ones.
