Impossible Lair was a genuinely amazing game, criminally overlooked when it should be held in the same regard as DKC:TF and Mario Wonderbraü
Mario Wonderbraü
Agreed. Very fun game with a memorable soundtrack to complement the beautiful level designs
I love how modest their studio is. Just a brick building full of genius.
Man I need to learn to comment after watching the whole video lol
A perfect programmer cave. 😂
A company doing its best to surprise gamers like us! I am looking forward to Tooka-Laylee!
Rare (Circa Stamper Brothers) actually worked in a farmhouse from before.
Full of genius ? What's the proof a few old people who once had a part to play some great games. But let's face it yooka laylee was pretty crap n they obviously know that. Hence their excuse of needing more people.
I'd love to see a new yooka laylee 3d collectathon. Its been long enough and the team has learned a lot together, i think its time for a sequel to the 3D.
No
Honestly love these guys. Met them in London for Yooka Laylee's launch event and they were all just down to earth, lovely guys - that just happen to be creative and technical wizards. Loved seeing this video!
Also, SO curious as to what they're making. Impossible Lair was incredible...I'd kind of loooooove an adventure kart racer....
@@DirectorToby Oh boy... Diddy Kong Racing is my favorite racing game of all times ! It would be AMAZING if they made a Diddy Kong Racing type of game.
I met one of them in grindr!
WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE PLAYTONIC!!! YOU ARE THE FATHERS OF 3D PLATFORMING DEVELOPMENT AND OUR MOST PRECIOUS AND BELOVED GAMING COMPANY KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WE LOVE YOU ALL!!! CANT WAIT FOR YOUR NEXT GAME🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great to hear from these guys again - been too long. Whatever they’re working on next, I’m sure it’ll be great!
Whatever they make, I can't wait to hear DK Vine cover it.
Own both Yooka games, love them both.
I appreciated learning more about the studio. Looking forward to what they have next. Great video!
Same, I understand that games take ridiculously long to produce, but I hope soon.
That was so interesting! I've admired those artists/programmers for many years (having loved Banjo-Kazooie since I was a kid) so it's lovely to hear their insights. I'm glad they're taking their full time with whatever comes next so they can put all their creativity and care into it. Personally I'd love to see what Yooka-Laylee 2 would be like now that their studio's really come into its own!
When Gavin Price said "bear with us" my eyes lit up because of the potential connotations, but I'd say that variety of surprise is unlikely haha. I'm very excited to see what else they can do with their new characters, anyway!
I'd love to see them do a Yooka-Laylee racing game in the same spirit of Diddy Kong Racing. There are so many characters in the Yooka-Laylee franchise to form a roster for a racing game.
And of course it would be incredible to have a racing game like Diddy Kong Racing again.
Far and away my favorite Nintendo Life video. Very well made and I’ve been DYING to hear more from this studio, my fingers are crossed for Yooka-Laylee 2!
Glad the original Yooka Laylee exists but it definitely had its issues. Impossible Lair, now that game is one of the best 2D platformers I've ever played. Looking forward to seeing what's next, feels like there has to be something soon. Maybe they could try their hands at a kart racer again.
Really hoping they'd make a Yooka Laylee version of Diddy Kong Racing.
Ya
That would be awesome
You know what would be cool? A DCR Spiritual succesor that is a V-Shojo game with the Vshojo cast being chibi in their smol cars.
Man, I loved Yooka Laylee. Played this during a difficult time in my life and I know there are some issues with it, but for me, it's the most important thing somehow. I played Banjo Kazooie as a kid and this transported me to that same place of freedom and joy and peace.
People that have changed and innovated the videogame industry and also contributed to many people's childhood memories ❤
This would be an excellent opportunity for Microsoft to just talk to Playtonic and see if they can collaborate on bringing Banjo-Threeie to life. Perhaps co-developing with Toys for Bob.
Impossible lair was genuinely one of the best 2d platformers ive ever played. Really excited for whatever they're working on next
Both Yooka-games are amazing - can't wait to see Playtonic's next outing 🤩
The Rare and Playtonic Team will always have a special place in my heart. Wish them all the very best with their next game.
My hope is that they can eventually work on Banjo again
Same but that would require either for them to be bought by Microsoft (which would be a horrible idea) or for Microsoft to sell Banjo back to them (which is never going to happen)
Some things are best left in the past
YES.. :') a sequel... 🙌🙌🙌
Why ? They were bad at it ???
That's not entirely true. They could work as a second party developer, just like they did during the Rare days with Nintendo.@@jindraws
This is an awesome video, Zion, full of insight and sincerity.
Indeed, such interview videos are golden.
Yooka laylee had issues for a first game, but the follow up Impossible Lair was amazing and showed this studio has talent.
Can’t wait for the next game.
There were a lot of problems with the development of that game, and that is basically the Kickstarter stretch goals left them with obligations to meet that they either didn't have the resources to do well (for example, the quizzes) or ideas that should have just been scrapped. The other big problem is that they had to build the studio while they were making the game. The kickstarter worked very well, but was a double-edged sword. The nature of kickstarter meant that updates had to constantly be given and they were under pressure to release the game. They have obviously built up the team and have learnt their lesson in taking their time. I assume they will be making Yooka Duolee and if would make sense for it to come out this year.
Impossible Lair was a fantastic game so I'm looking forward to whatever they end up doing.
I'm so glad for all those recent documentaries about videogame studios (like Sabotage's and Valve's). People should know the talent behind the same videogames we all so love. Simply incredible.
This is such an amazing documentary and Zion you How did yourself this time and you’re one of my favourites from Nintendo life with your sincerity and your enthusiasm, and I am a big fan of Rare from the N64 days, and I’d like to say that I bought almost all of their games. So yeah when you saw the Rare logo you do the game is gonna be good so it’s nice to hear from a lot of the guys that worked at rear and worked on games like banjo Kazooie, Goldeneye, jet force Gemini, and Diddy Kong racing. This is a fantastic video and one of your very best.
That was a really interesting video! Thanks!
Really like those guys, they seem down to earth and passionate about what they’re doing. That seems to be a dream company to work at. I’m wondering if there is a hint somewhere in the video, well done blurring those monitors 😅
😂 lol.. I didn't see the blurr.. dang.. Zion thought about everything.
This video is also amazing to have, just industry deep dives and knowing the people behind the studio!
I actually quite enjoyed the original Yooka-Laylee. Wouldn't say it's my favorite 3D platformer collectathon out there (it's hard to beat Spyro for me), but it's certainly quite the charming game with fun realms to explore and quite an entertaining gameplay design. While I do think Impossible Lair is arguably far better of a game (and just as charming), I'd definitely be down for another sequel game similar to the original.
Proud to have contributed my funds to the Kickstarter, and proud to have both games in my collection.
Impossible lair has become one of my favourite games of all time. I'm sure their next title will be wonderful 🥰
This made me happy to see. Loved their games so far. I can feel the Rare spirit
Oh yeah, 100%. Yooka Laylee was basically a modern N64 Rare game. That's why I loved it SOO much and I CAN'T WAIT for their next game.
A Yooka-Laylee sequel would be pretty great, but ultimately I just hope to see them brainstorm more new IPs. I’d love to see them create a new IP that could fill the hole left by the cancelled Dinosaur planet, as its swap mechanic that allowed for equal play between Krystal and Saber was completely lost when it became Star Fox Adventures and Krystal was relegated to a lowly damsel in distress.
Yes! Either that or a new Jet Force Gemini-like game, featuring Schell the Spacewitch.
I hardly call it equal play when Sabre dies sometime after the halfway point, leaving you to finish the adventure as Krystal.
@@X2011racer I never knew that. Still better than 5% Krystal 95% Fox in SFA
11:32 This is something I feel with Fromsoftware. Something that's very rare in the industry. It doesn't matter what kind of genre or game Fromsoftware is making I know I can trust spending my money on their games which is something I can't say for practically any other developer that currently exists. Rare definitely used to be in that same vein back then
I hope we get an Impossible Lair sequel, that game is amazing
😮 oh, that would be hype!
They should make a DKC type of game instead. With pre rendered type of looks, snappy gameplay etc. THAT would be amazing !
@@svenmandelkorn3238besides the graphics, impossible lair basically was DKC
@@eqprog not really. It was like a improved version of Tropical Freeze.
Great video! It's nice to see the people behind the games for once. Also, I like their attitude of taking their time and polishing the product before even announcing anything. The game industry is poisoned by hype and this quieter approach is very welcome.
The thing the one guy said about being surprised is so real. I completely avoid any info about upcoming video games like it's some kind of mental plague. I'm old enough I know when I'm going to want to play a video game or not basically when I hear about it. I don't need to be told a bunch of spoilers and hype cycle bullshit just to get my rocks off
The first Yooka-Laylee was a little disappointing for me but Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair was one of my favorite games of 2019. Very much looking forward to what they have in store for the future.
Impossible Lair is absolutely fantastic.
I played YL 1 after all the online hate died down and loved it. The internet is toxic.
@IfOUGHTpIRANHAz the only problem is that it feels like the first game the studio worked, because it was. It still had something very special, so was a very good 7 that felt like a 9.
Always appreciate and respect learning about the people behind the games we love. Thanks for sharing!❤
Interesting indeed 🎮💚
I'm really glad that after so long, the og Rareware team is still as humble and modest as they were back then. They're an amazing studio, and I bet working for them is great
I would love to see Yooka and Laylee take the spotlight again in a new game. I have come to love those two characters and thus eagerly await any new game development project(s) they find themselves involved with.
Nice video, I'm looking forward for their next yooka game
Yooka teaming up with Banjo.
Thanks for the awesome video. Nice update on the studio
Well, they’re confirming they’re working on a game so I’m glad to hear that. It wouldn’t make sense to have all their staff if they were just a publishing arm, but the silence has been so deafening as they publish games, that I was starting to second-guess.
I can tell Zion really enjoyed the source material it’s definitely gives feelings of belonging and inspiration
Wonderful video Zion! It's so great to hear from Playtonic again, and get a look inside of their offices. Loved it =D
Fantastic interviews! I really love the team over at Playtonic and have been wondering what has been going on with them since Playtonic Friends started so this was kinda perfect haha!
Nintendo Life, this is one of your best videos yet. I love the insight you give into the game's industry. Not gonna lie, I wanna pick up Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair now!
Most underrated talents ever, yooka laylee had a rough first game (which i still adore imo) but impossible lair was an easy 9/10 game, I really hope the next 3d game is just as good as impossible lair.
Would love to see a tour of the new space when they settle in!
These guys are often modest and non corporate, except when it comes to their news posts and social media. Glad to get an update from them that isn’t an advertisement from their publishing arm.
I know it's not very likely but I'd love a TWOka-Laylee
This is the most likely game you can expect I'd say lol
Steve Mayles seemed to be strongly hinting towards it there, at least as something they want to do next if it's not what they're currently working on!
I've never been happier with a dev team withholding information from me, it makes me excited to see what they release next. Also "Bear with us", @16:42 surely not?
Impossible Lair was phenomenal and much later I tried Yooka Laylee 1 and loved that too.
Awesome interviews! Will the full/uncut be shown anywhere?
Dear Playtonic team, I like your games, I look forward to your games, and I'm wondering what you'll bring out next. 😅😉...... Seriously though I have such a deep love for the Rare platformers of the 90s like the DKC Trilogy, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, and DK64 are games I play regularly still to this day... and naturally I loved the Yooka Laylee games as well, so I really enjoyed watching this and am genuinely happy to see they're still at it and doing so well. Awesome job on this video! Cheers!
My dad says, “They need to get a descaler in the kettle if they’re moving to Burton”.
There are two games I would love to see being made by them:
1) A Jet Force Gemini-like game, featuring Schell the Spacewitch;
2) A new Dinosaur Planet (i.e. a Zelda-like game) with original characters.
At the start of the video his voice inflection when he says "Donkey Kong Country" it sounds like if a person was cautioned in a film. Like "You better keep your windows rolled up, this is Donkey Kong Country" just listen its amazing and im sitting at work on Black Friday LOL I got time on my hands
Wow I didn't know about impossible lair until now, gotta give it a try !!
I remember when Yooka Laylee came out I recall it got so much hate.
Yooka Laylee was so fun and I can’t wait for some form of next game in the series or completely new game!
Looking forward to the Twooka Laylee announcement
What I would personally want is a spiritual successor to Conkor’s bad fur day. I know that conkor basically got nentendo to sell rare, but I thought it was great.
Good news Insomniac confirmed that Conker was a big inspiration for Rachel and Clank.
You're better off asking Gory Detail, a company founded by Chris Seavor himself.
Great video Zion! Between this and your MOTHER masterpiece, you have a great talent for documentary style videos. Keep up the great work sir! :)
Great guys, wish them all the best in the future ❤🎉
I came out of this video feeling hopeful and happy. Firstly i am really fond of the Yooka games and playtonic, and seeing their name on something makes it interesting immediately. But the comment about wanting to be surprised by a game really struck me, and i do feel the same way. The PR machine for the bigger games is too much honestly.
I for one look forward to more playtonic / Yooka games!
hopefully a new release soon 🎮🥳, but of course depends on their project scale.
I was just looking at videos of the Impossible Layer uploaded years ago (Was thinking of getting it) and suddenly something new lol
Please do Yooka-Laylee Racing 🙏 They already did a 3D & 2D platformer which are obvious nods to banjo and donkey kong country now it's time for a nod to diddy kong racing 🎉
16:42
BEAR with us?
Banjo-Threeie confirmed.
Here's hoping they make more spiritual successors to past Rare games, like Yooka-Laylie was to Banjo-Kazooie, like:
Stonker's Poor Fuzz Night
Flawless Dim
SilverNose 700
Boom Platoon
Combatfrogs
Horse Zilla Nation
Pony Zilla Driving
Stellar Vixen Expeditions
I wish banjo kazooie would come back
What a fantastic documentary. This is real games journalism and I'm not surprised Zion is involved.
At a time where there's been countless layoffs in the industry, I'm glad they're still chipping away. Looking forward to their next project.
Love this inside look!
I need that final shot in this video as a T-shirt or a mug.
Great documentary video!
I just hope Playtonic will share some Infos on their new game soon. I can't wait for their next game !
We hope so too. They seem trepidatious a little probably due to the ton of backlash. The next title has had a lot more development time. Should bode well. Here's hoping.
Wow I literally wondered this morning what they are up to.
This is a great video, after the Half-Life documentary and this, its some kind of video i’m starting to love.
The soundtrack to impossible lair was absolutely brilliant
I wonder if Nintendo is working with them. Partnering for a game would be cool to see from them. With the Switch successor coming up, i could see it.
Makes me wonder what type of software they use today , to model the characters, I like using Blender because it's something I'm use to, can't make extreme things, but can make some things, find it easier than coding.
Don’t mind me, I just have to leave a written mark on the internet about how much I love Playtonic and people working there
What a wonderful video!
I like how the googly eyes thing got brought over from nowhere lol
Googly Eyes was the last thing I thought about when it came to Banjo Kazooie
I would love to see a ‘spiritual successor’ to Jet Force Gemini. I loved that game!
1:15 Chris Sutherland or Judge Doom 🤔
Very fun video!
great news!
Thanks for the video!
The first yooka laylee game is like one my favourite 3D platformers
Please make a Yooka-Laylee racing game, next, Playtonic!
😮.. would be cool!
@@sparkypack Agreed.
@@rockylopez7846 Fun Fact: Naughty Dog said that Diddy Kong racing was a big inspiration for Crash Team racing.
@@orangeslash1667 Cool, glad to hear!🤩🤩
I'd like to see a spiritual successor to Diddy Kong racing next.
I hope they remake Banjo and Perfect Dark for Switch sooner than later.
Microsoft owns those IP 🫡
They can't, they don't own the ip. There is apparently a new Perfect Dark game getting made for Xbox though.
My dyslexic butt read the thumbnail: Where's VODKA? Lok
We still waiting for Twooka-Laylee
Finally, a new episode of The Office UK 😃👍
I really did enjoy the first Yooka Laylee. That got a lot of hate it didn't deserve.
I see some golden potential there.
