    Interview by Tim Van Schmidt
I got a call one day in 1998 from Grateful Dead publicist Dennis McNally, still active in Dead affairs, offering me the chance to interview the band's lyricist Robert Hunter.
Hunter was coming to my town with a solo show and since he didn't do many interviews, this was a rare opportunity if I wanted it, Dennis explained. Well, duh. I took the call and arranged for some print space afterwards.
I connected with Hunter on the first day of his tour that year and I think he was pretty energized. It sounded like he was bumping around in his kitchen as I was talking to him and I'm not really sure why he was even doing the interview.
But I found him to be very talkative and he balanced a gregarious sense of humor with a sincere effort to answer my questions with true heart.
I've included a few excerpts from my original article from that time to add some more visuals to this. But the important thing here is a legendary songwriter talking about his process.

Robert Hunter was a treasure, the the last of the 20th century troubadours.

I saw his two-set show in '97 and it was wonderful. Also saw him with Dylan and the Dead in '03 where he opened with this roaring Loser. We are so lucky that he played at all. Love ya, Bob ❤ (~);-} ❤

He's a legend. I saw him two times as a solo act. Once in 1997 in Boulder, Co at the Fox Theater. It was his first show that he had done in quite some time. He hadn't toured in some years. Opened with Box of Rain and it was awesome. Saw him again I believe it was Halloween 1997 in Madison, Wi. I could be wrong on the date, but I did see him at the Barrymore Theater. Another great show. Was fortunate enough to have been on the Grateful Dead tour the last 5 years. Unfortunately didn't get to catch JGB. It is my only regret. But lucky we were to have caught any of it.

    STAR BABY GAP
    (lyrics)
    sometimes you do
Some are long forgotten, others never did exist
Don't make no difference, baby, one and all be missed
Start at the top, and roll all the way down
Star baby gap, and the [bluebell ...]
[Love her in heaven, love her in hell]
She won't find others to love her as well
Searching [through the canyon], for one thing true
You miss it if you blink
Baby most, most of us do
There's so much desolation, human tongue can never tell
It's far too dark for Eden, and it's much too damp for hell
Star baby gap, [and ... again]
[The woman at ..] the edge of town
[...] I love you too late
I love in [?] by the side of the [?]
You'll miss it if you blink, baby, most of us do
