Three Minutes with Utah Phillips 1990 Interview by Tim Van Schmidt
Three Minutes with Utah Phillips 1990
Interview by Tim Van Schmidt
This interview with folk legend Utah Phillips from 1990 took some interesting turns.
Sure, we talked about folk music, a contemporary music he labeled as "revolutionary." But Phillips wasn't talking about big records or big concerts, he was talking about the underground folk music circuit that was more about sharing and participating than about stars. It was revolutionary because it wasn't about consuming. This was a world that was existing on a "sub-industrial level" for Phillips.
We also talked about the music and poetry of inner city gangs and how Phillips thought that "variety" was the best part about America- and that language was suffering because of cultural "leveling."

Sunny Adé (the King of Jujú Music👑)aLways has kept his music (lyrics), away from politics. Rather, he has chosen to continually emphasize spreading his messages of Joy, Peace and Love to his audiences across all the continents.. Sunny Adé👑, is quite the Consummate Entertainer.
Wow! 🥰
Gram was very smart, he pulled back on the drugs and alcohol much earlier than his band mates in CSN. Sadly David has died but he did have some great years of sobriety, Stephen's stroke damaged his ability to use his tongue properly and the damage to his hearing leaves him sounding well, less then his fans like to see.
Help don’t hinder
Yes, we sure could use a change.
What a joke 🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is a good reminder of how one person actions can make an impact. Hopefully for the good of all.
They say all Hell is about to break loose in Chicago next week.... 100,000 Hamas protesters will crash the convention.... raise some Hell.
Nash is a posh commie, Bobby Seale was a Maoist, SDS (remember them?) were total lunatics...The Left is a disease...
Farr-King Horrible vocals. Crosby was a master at being an Yass-Hold. Don't miss this creep.
Sad...need to stop.
I love them, saw them at wild horse casino 2 weeks ago. They are Fabulous
Nash still has some power here. The song is relevant as ever.
It's really funny. I was reading today about a guy going to jail for a text in the UK. Or a phone number to report your neighbors in Minnesota. It'll sort it self out. One way or the other.
Thanks ❣️
Love the Rippingtons and Russ is top 5 for Contemporary Smooth Jazz guitarist.
Salute
How great living legend still on I grow up with their songs in the 80s
You said it for a bunch of us 💯💯💯💯
👍❣️🤣
I was at that Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart show. I would love to find a recording. I also saw quite a few shows at the celebrity theater back in the early 70s. My favorites are The Beach Boys in 1973 and Al Stewart around 1978.
She touched so many with Her Sweet Soul and Music. Brother Warrior was the first song I heard of Her's. It made me realize we are not alone 💙
Great Music!
👍🏼
She was in the heart of Hippyville in the 60's
This is a beautifully produced interview. I very much enjoy the minimal amount of interruptions from the interviewer.
Great interview!
I was there - Not far from where you were - Great fucking show. Thanks for sharing
Agreed!!
This is amazing, thanks so much for posting it! Was this ever broadcast, or is it simply a private recording? How did this come about?
Sorry for delay- I wrote for the local daily newspaper and did musician interviews each week. I taped them all on cassette- not always with high quality- and thought fans would like hearing their voices...
MET THE COMMANDER TWICE GOT TO DRINK BEER WITH HIM ON ONE OCCASION GREAT GUY GREAT BAND LOT OF GREAT TALENT
Cool electronica...
The Future is getting much darker, but it is always darkest before the dawn ☕️
I'd make it play Wonderwall
Sick cover of Jandek
Awesome.
Oh my god, they're communicating!

Thursday evening at Guitar Center
LMAO
I love the music! 10/10!
Agree with the other comment from a music and taste perspective, but as a piece of conceptual art it seems quite cool. Any description by the artist of what it's meant to represent
I think it's supposed to be a physical representation of a headache.
I had a similar idea over ten years ago. My idea is to incorporate physical space/human choice to a composition. In perhaps a larger room with the addition of electric instruments (pre recorded and played through hundreds of speakers), an individual can walk throughout the space at their own pace for as long or little as they want. Where the chose and how long they stand , they will hear the speakers in closest proximity to them as the forefront, with speakers farther away as background. Two people could hear the piece/space differently based on the time and speed they linger. Let’s say the speakers each played a triad. If you had a football stadium with speakers placed one sq yard apart, running or walking through the field in any direction will give each listener their own unique experience compared to another. It is the idea of incorporating the listener as co composer of the piece.
@@fishytank1landwhat?
This could have had so much potential if they threw a bit more extra time into it
doubtful... Who wants to tune all those guitars? 😂
Always loved the Commander. Saw him every time I could.
The song is “Li Po” composed by Ben Monder.
Thanks for that!!
Woah!!!!! The three pictures in :52 seconds really really really make me excited for art !!! I love it !!!
Stop
sweet slippery slide
My favorite
You have no idea how happy it makes me to know he's still out there performing! Thank you for this great footage!
She said she was 43 in this interview. Kate died at age 44.
Here I am in my little corner of the Internet where genius has emerged like a flower. 🙂 Thanks. 👍
