That is my dream Merc, I've really struggled the past couple of years with depression and suicidal thoughts, Now I've really pushed myself the last few months, got a new job and will save for a car like this, one day I'll be able to afford one. This is by far one of my favourite videos Matt excellent and was so good to see you all have a laugh thank you.
I finely by one of this Mercedes s320 cdi. Mine is 2001 preface lift and I love it. I cross my fingers to by mercedes w220 for your self.
Any updates?
I have suffered and still do from the dark days my friend. I hope that you acheive your goal and buy yourself one of the S class beauties. You will have a smile that will light up a room
I really enjoy these kinds of videos and they always inspire me to take a road trip myself. Always liked a diesel saloon, you can’t beat them!
Glad you like them!
Except by a petrol one
Petrol for performance, but you can’t beat a good diesel for cruising economically.
Do it now before gov starts putting more restrictions soon there will be ULEZ for county side driving 😂
@@K777Johnfor economy LPG beats petrol and diesel every day
45mpg from a 20 year-old engine with ailing injectors and some ECU gremlins is damn impressive. Love the production levels on the video, definitely professional level work. You know a road trip is going too well when people start playing pranks on each other...
Spot on matt, this content completely contrasts the "ive just bought " videos. Both are great but these are a great diversion. Keep em coming.
Glad you like them!
Lovely change of pace Matt. Production values are constantly improving, love the music and drone shots.
Much appreciated!
Another banger from High Peak Autos! I love watching your vids, its just a great pleasure since you're such a chill guy and very funny at the same time. Keep pushing the content, 1M here we come!
I appreciate that! All the best
@@HighPeakAutos this is no banger its got years left in it ,
You certainly get my vote for hosting Top Gear. Your definitely know your stuff. Keep up the good work!
Aycen on Gorton road (near Ashburys station) are a Mercedes specialist and have never let me down with servicing and mot. The owner is really knowledgeable on all things MB.
Agreed!
Stunning views, filming, humor, soundtrack and performance from the S-Class! a plasure to travel with the low budget dictator and the team 😄
Haha thank you! All the best
I was really looking forward to this one, given how enjoyable and witty part 1 was . Thanks for making and releasing at the end of the bank holiday weekend. What a performance! Two fine machines and a very enjoyable video! 💯%!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. We’ve been doing that kind of journey for the last 25 years.
A word of warning about the NC500. When you go across the top and head west and south it’s single track with passing spaces for well over 100 miles. It’s full of camper vans and everyone seems to have forgotten how to reverse! You’ll see some serious exotica (we saw a convoy of Lamborghinis once) and some drivers see it as a race track to get round as quickly as possible. You need time and patience.
Would you say sep/oct is a good time to do the nc500 over a few days?
Thanks for the insight..

I was a chauffeur for a few years and drove s and t reg turbo diesel mercs. One s class, three e classes. Loved them all. I drove CNN from London to the Bradford riots!
What I love about this channel is the top notch reviews and variety of car videos, but got to say the cinematography and drone shots in this one have been 🔝👌🏽
Glad you like them!
45 mpg sounds about right in the 320 CDi.. We had an old W221 320 which was a joy to drive, and reliable ..
Used about two thirds of a tank of diesel on a trip from Dundee to Devon, 550 miles , returning home a few days later with same fuel consumption.. Effortless armchair driving with a good sound system.
Great video.. Definitely should take the A82 through Glencoe next time..👍
yes the a82
I simply love these roadtrip videos. Keep them coming please. They could even be longer than just 15 minutes, including even more scenery and landscape. 25 minutes could be a good length.
As an advocate of bangernomics, I love videos like this. I currently drive a 2007 Lexus RX400h (due partly to your review) and would have no qualms about doing a trip like this in both comfort and security. But I dream of 43mpg!
Love the fact you are mixing the content up. Me and a friend drove to Orkney last month and stayed in Wick. The route is so stunning but you begin to take it for granted after a while
Thoroughly enjoyable video, I love the way you are expanding the channel and exploring new formulas. Also, the little Top Gear antics were appreciated, made me chuckle. I enjoy all your content, the property vids as well, just wish you all the best as your hard work shines through and you deserve success.
The production quality of these videos just keep getting better, great stuff! I'm also planning on getting the new Skoda Scala face-lift at the end of the year, and this journey has inspired me to take the same route from good ol' Manchester to John o' Groats when I get the new car!
Also, it goes to show how much I've been watching the channel when your videos are always the first thing recommended to me on the TH-cam homepage, to the point I hadn't even realized until now that I wasn't subscribed... thanks for the great entertainment :)
Your content just keeps getting better. Such a great entertaining video and could even see it being on TV! I like the old S Class and the OM648 is one of the best Diesel engines ever made.
Not only this video I have enjoyed but all the others I've seen...
It's not only about cars but your smooth way to do this. Please continue...
As someone that lives just over half an hour north of Inverness it was nice to see some familiar roads. Ive always wanted to do a long road trip in an older car. It just looks like so much fun
Really good fun Matt👍🏻thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the much criticised diesel engine is easily the best engine for long motorway journeys, strong, reliable and quite frugal. More please 😀👍🏻
They still make sense for eating up the motorway miles
Haven't been up to the Highlands for years -watching your video makes me want to take another trip the scenery is stunning👍 Great video and some shades of TG/GT antics from your fellow travellers😀 The old Merc did pretty well which says a lot for its build quality despite its gremlins!
Hey Matt, great minds think alike and what a coincidence I have for you!
In March, I bought the actual W220 S350 LWB you featured in a video about 2 years ago for a family road trip to Croatia, where I am now !! Driving back 1,250 miles this coming Thursday !!! Again, nothing mechanically to report at all, I put this largely down to you going through the car before selling it to the guy I bought it from. These are absolute bargains and perfect cars for very long trips. Had the honour of taking it through 100,000 miles just before we got to Split....
I love the W220 and W221 S class, both of them have give very special but different vibes.
The old Mercedes diesels are tanks, great MPG and comfortable ride.
Considering to get one as a 1st car!
Great video as usual Matt! :D
Really enjoyed this Matt; and I also enjoyed the music…..it all looks and sounds very well produced.
Thanks! My talented team
Another great video Matt. That old Merc looked lovely against the backdrop of such stunning scenery (and it did you proud!).
More of these please! I like seeing how the cars do practically and the road trips are inspiring me to plan my own trips.
I love the road trips videos, please do more of these
Will do
Impressive performance. did Lands End John O Groats in a 200T W123 about 20 years ago. The car cost me £130 - ah those were the days.... 🙂 Used more than one tank of petrol tho......
Well what a cracking video this is, stylish production great back drop and overall an enjoyable watch, well done Matt and the crew, these are good to change it up a bit for your loyal viewers
Very good return on such a old car cannot moan at that..love it up there I did the run to John o groat's in a Volvo many years ago .
Great video Matt. Few weeks ago I done a somewhat similar distance trip up to the highlands (Fort William) in my little 1.0l VW Up. 1001 miles in total there and back.. Managed to average 56mpg on the motorway haha, Not bad for such a tiny engine at 70-80 mph lol. The scenery is just mesmerising up there!
The steam train from Fort William to Mallaig, through some stunning scenery is quite an experience too.......
Another cracking video and great photography and commentary 👍🏾
Glad you enjoyed it
Quality video Matt. I never get bored of the content. Keep the content coming.
Impressive. Cars of this era seem to be the sweet spot between comfort/practicality and reliability. I did almost the same journey from Didsbury (near you) to John O' Groats non-stop in 9 hours in a 1978 Reliant Scimitar GTE. My co-driver and I shared the driving, ate on the move, and didn't switch off the engine during driver swaps and comfort stops. The 3-litre Ford V6 managed 33mpg and had 18 litres of petrol left when we arrived. I think that's impressive, too! More of this type of video will be welcome on the channel.
Great video, as always. Like others, I could have done with a longer video, as this was very enjoyable ..... how about a short that compares the 2 s classes on the trip? I wouldn't risk a 20 year old S, but having been in the back of a few of the model that is your 09 (and would have one in my fantasy garage), it would be good to know where you see the improvements / progress between the 2 designs
Great video matt! Im surprised the 03 s class made it!! Id love to see more of Jon & Ste. Loving the recent content! I would have passed out with those lights!
Thanks! Will do!
Good rugged diesel pre dpf etc so it should have no issues getting him there and back. Modern diesels are a right pain in the rear
You are so right!! Thats why we only buy old diesels like terranos and bmw 330d@@chucky2316 .
Just discovered this channel about 2 months ago and day after day appreciating more your content.
Greetings from Italy
Matt I have to say your production is top notch! And what epic road trip that old merc was a trooper
Great video , enjoyed that 👍 . Coming back from John O'Groats , the A82 from Inverness to Glasgow would have been a great choice for scenery and history . BTW the most Northernly point on the mainland is ' Dunnet head ' .
That’s right but nobody’s heard of it
I thought Dunnet was the most Easterly point?
@Brian-om2hh Brian hi , the most easterly point of Scotland ( mainland ) is at Buchan at the Ness lighthouse , I think furthest eastern point in England and UK is in Suffolk somewhere .
@@Brian-om2hhPeterhead
Most easterly point of the UK is the prom at Lowestoft, Suffolk. Most northerly is the top of Shetland, most southerly the bottom of Scillies and, since the 1970s the most westerly is Rockall (it was incorporated into Scotland then; previously Soay next to St Kilda had that title). In terms of the island of Britain (as distinct from the nation of GB) the most westerly is Ardnamurchan point (north of Mull, south of Skye) and the most southerly is the Lizard in Cornwall.
Great video Matt.. good use of music and panoramics, and a great story. This is definitely one of your best videos, and that’s saying something, as your videos are usually high quality anyway! Great job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Matt. Reminds me of/ I remember seeing on the news back in 2017 the AA set a record for driving from Lands end to John O Groats on a single tank of Petrol using a Honda Jazz I believe. Driving at 59 miles an hour without any radio or air con on, they achieved it with about 20 miles still left in the tank.
Excellent video! So different your usual uploads. Loved the drone shots and the music montages. Hope to see some more like this!!
I love crossing the border and seeing the saltire sign . Always feels like you've escaped the rat race ( until you hit Glasgow anyway ) . Keep meaning to do the NC 500 in a far more reliable car !
Go the other way, via Pitlochry, Stirling etc. Not much traffic once you get past Stirling and Perth......
Lovely trip.
Word of caution, Don't do the NC500 in a sporty car. I've done NC500 and related routes 3 times. Although the whole route is amazing, half the roads are bumpy and sometimes aggressively arched single lane tarmac. Avoid the summer as it's full of campers and other motoring pilgrims who don't always follow the passing etiquette in single lane roads.
I had my best time there during a dry winter season in an old E39 5 Series BMW with winter tires and standard suspension. Good suspension travel and thick side wall is your friend in NC500. The hotels over there are also cheap during the winter.
Good advice. I did it in autumn which seems to be a good time for weather in the Highlands (at least in my experience) and the roads were not overcrowded. That was a few years ago mind.
Thanks Matt, great content as ever. Nice seeing you putting Stockport on the map
So pleased to wake up and see this video uploaded. I’m just about to head from Oxford down to Devon this morning in my 1999 S500 with my 3 sons. Obviously won’t get that fuel economy (or even close) but I know it will be a supremely luxurious and comfortable drive down.
You might struggle to do this in an older car, in the not too distant future, Sadiq Khan is planning to extend ULEZ to John 'O Groats 😂
You need "Diagnose Dan"!
Thanks for taking us along Matt! Really enjoyed the car too!
Awesome shots, music and editing🙌🏽 Love the video Matt and co. Keep them coming!
Road triiiiiiiiip👍!
I did the NC500 earlier this year in my GT86. It was awesome. Some of the roads are fantastic but there are a LOT of potholes, so I'd recommend not doing it in something with some level of ride comfort.
Did you also stay on Isle of Skye?
We saw at dark GT86 on the Broadfort campsite on Skye, when we did a NC500 and Skye trip with our 2020 Mustang Bullitt in May.
I think these S-Classes here could be a good choice for this trip.
We will return with the Pony to do it again, but clockwise.
The Pony has proven to be a real Gran Turismo car.
@@Ponyreiter Wasn't me. We thought about going to Skye but ran out of time.
@@MikeyMichaelton That's a pity, Skye is a beautiful place, although a bit more crowded.
But you must have driven through the Glencoe Valley?
@Ponyreiter82 Yes, drove through there on the first day. Did you do the Nc500 or just parts of Scotland?
@@MikeyMichaelton Kind of the whole NC500 starting near Hamburg with a stay on Skye (hiking).
Hamburg > Amsterdam > Newcastle > Edinburgh > Stirling > Inverness > Loch Ness > John o'Groats > Durness > Scourie > Stoer Lighthouse > Ullapool > Poolewe > Applecross > around Skye > Glencoe > Loch Lomond > Edinburgh > Newcastle > Hamburg
2240 mls in total, 65 h of driving, 378 L petrol
We are planing to do it again, but clockwise.
Nice one Matt, enjoyed the watch-a-long, thanks for sharing, love both those Mercs as well, hope they’re both still running all ok 👍
Really impressive economy & range figures Matt from both S Classe's 👌
I'm really happy that the W220 did'nt let you down.
Unfortunately we NEVER got the diesel version in Australia.
You really showed what the W220 was/is about ... luxury and comfort (and surprising) range on a long trip ... with no 'charging station' stress ... 😊
Why has the older S class aged better than the 09 Model?! Is it just nostalgia?
Nicer design, triangles age
The wheels are doing a lot for it aswell
There's something about older S class that the new ones don't have. I would pick the wheels from a newer S to fit on this beauty
HI, the problem is DPF filter is clogged
Not sure about Mercedes, but most manufacturers didn’t fit DPF’s to their diesel cars until they were made compulsory in 2008 and this is a 2003 car.
Car’s way too old to have a dpf.
For the S Class it was fitted from 2003
@@tomasconka9484 Just looked it up and they didn’t introduce DPF filters to the 6 cylinder S class diesels until 2004.
It was available for the C and E class 4 cylinder diesels from October 2003.

I have to say what a GREAT video Matt this was,I really enjoyed it,it was filmed beautifully, including all the aerial shots!
Well done to everyone concerned.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Marvellous video of S class and road trip.Behind all of this success lies the elephant in the room of a huge bill to sort out the minor problems Matt mentioned and the possibility they are major ones.
Hi Matt, Great car journey and love the witty commentary. Keep up the excellent work😊
Wow what a change in the production quality . Video ,tracks etc . Keep it up
Wow! Stunning scenery and those drone shots were incredible. Big up. Great team effort. ❤Scotland
Hey Matt. As an Invernessian it is lovely to see our local area on your channel. Cracking video. I have a small home garage with car lift so if you need any minor works on your car when you next come north pop in for a coffee and I’ll lend you some tools. Love your road trip videos. Cheers Alan
I worked on the Dalwhinnie section years ago, it was back when we used to get snow and ice, beautiful but cold and wet! I think your road trips are a lot of fun to see! thanks
Great vid nice to see you having fun without crisis keep em coming top job 👍👍
Excellent! Love the drone photography.
Good video.
Got to admit I enjoy your videos, well presented fun yet professional.
Very high quality! Enjoyed the video very much :)
What a great video, thanks for taking the time to do it, stunning scenery ,and what a car, great mpg, luxury driving on a budget.
Glad you enjoyed it
Did the NC500 with my friend last year I was in a 2004 BMW 220D Touring and he was in a 1999 BMW 328I Saloon was amazing loved every second of it beautiful views!
That sounds great. I will do it soon
Welcome to Scotland, glad it didn't rain for most of the time. Loved this one, as it definitely goes to show just how far a Deisel can get you compared to a modern EV.
great video, I lived in Thurso further on than John O Groats for a few years, it is a lovely safe area and fantastic scenery ,when the weather is nice you cannot beat it, the car did very well considering its age as well.
Very enjoyable video, Matt. More please!
Enjoyed every minute of it Matt !! Keep them coming 😀
P.s: During the watching of this video i already opened second hand market and started looking at the old S classes. 🤣🤣
I really enjoyed this Matt. The lighter moments of this had some laugh out loud bits in it. Do more of this please, if you can find time.
Great wee video . Gorgeous countryside/views . Loved it .
I remember being so happy when I got 475 miles out of my Saab 9-5 2.0t...! Great range out of the Merc and a great trip!
Brilliant video great trip beautiful place
Love these videos look forward to the next one :) great job
Gr8 video Matt.! The owl girl done well really even with her issues she didn't leave u on the road side. More off these videos 📹 🤗
Brilliant video, Matt. Great fun to watch 👍
Loved that, the production on it was brilliant. Good trip, the A9 is tedious with the average speed cameras, but north and west of Inverness are some mighty roads. Remember taking my new focus st home a few years ago and it was amazing on those roads
Great video. I always enjoy a road-trip, even if nothing goes wrong. And back. Well done for avoiding the ULEZ zone. I like to think you're also a fan of Entourage.
Very enjoyable video Matt. Good mpg as well considering the age of the car. The 2009 XF 3.0D you persuaded me to buy nearly four years ago was treated to a remap which has increased the bhp to 295 and also increased fuel efficiency by just under 20% which is incredible. Cheers. Mike.
Very good
Great video Matt & very interesting - keep ‘em coming!
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you very much guys
Top video love the variety
Cracking video Matt 👍 great editing & music.
Good video, thanks Matt
The editing and views are just class 🤝
Genuinely interested in how you got away with the music!! Magical video as always Matt x
When i had my 320cdi, in one day, I went from ingleton in North Yorkshire to Manchester airport and back. Then down to Poole in Dorset and back again. I got out of the car as fresh as a daisy with no aches or pains. When I return to work, I really should get another. Thanks to your video, you've just confirmed it for me. Keep up the great work, all the best, Hugo.
Love this sort of Road Trip Video - please do some more! 🙂
Fab content Matt. Thanks
Brilliant idea, thank you!
Well shot and edited. Enjoyed it fully. Thanks.
Hi matt earlier this year the office mentioned that I still had 4 days to take before the end of April, so I shot home grabbed the keys to my van haven built transporter and hit the road .London to john o'groats, 670 miles and I did the trip in 13 .5 hours. It was magical. The views are just the best ,Scotland is simply stunning. I checked into the sea view hotel and got my head down . I have also done the North coast 500 .Oban
Was my favourite place stopping at the sky fall road and finding the spot were Daniel Craig stops with dame Judy Dench in the db5 was the highlight of my trip . Great to see that you still have the old S class 🇩🇪👍
Very nice!
These are the best car videos. Reminiscent of the old days, like hill challenges etc.
Matt, sure this is kinda obvious to some of us mechanics buddy but she needs her injectors sorting, that is why the glow plug light is illuminating.
Great video and as others have said a fab time to watch at the end of the Bank Hols weekend 😉
Definitely love this type of roadtrip video - great stuff and really nice production values (drone, music etc) and editing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
