- "Some wine guys" at The Splinter Group sourced a very nice 9 year bourbon and finished it in French Oak Napa Valley Bordeaux casks. Sounds heavenly, if you can find it.

Sipping some now from a bottle given to me by a friend who loves the channel. This whiskey is big, rich, decadent and the wine cask influence is very evident. Combined with the vanilla and butterscotch notes, you have dessert in a bottle. Superb!

Too bad its label is anything but legal.

bought this because of this review. My local liquor store had 2 bottles. When I saw it I remembered they liked it so I bought one. It is indeed fantastic. Judging by the dust on the bottle I will probably be able to get the last bottle the next time I return. For $35 it is a hell of a bargain.
I picked up a bottle of Slaughter House yesterday and I was blown away by it. It's my new favorite whiskey. I get big notes of honey, caramel, and vanilla from it. Delicious with a silky smooth finish and excellent mouthfeel. They hit a homerun with this one!
Just to piggy back on what Daniel and Rex said about cleaning out the bottles before putting the whiskey back in. StarSan is a sanitizer. Mix some with water in a spray bottle, turn the nozzle to stream, and you have a quick and easy way to quickly sanitize the inside of your bottles. If you need to clean the bottle first because it was holding a fruit juice (or other sugary substance) and some of it possibly dried on the inside of the bottle, I would recommend PBW, also known as Powdered Brewers Wash. A little bit of that, plus some soaking time, and that bottle will be good as new. So, PBW to clean sugary liquids, and StarSan to sanitize (ie no harmful bacteria or yeast). Hope that helps!

I’ve got the Slaughter House American Whiskey, Straight Edge Bourbon Whiskey and Whip Saw Rye Whiskey. Bought them strictly for the cool and unique labels but the juice inside is actually pretty darn good!
I’m a big Speyside/ Highland single malt guy. My brother in law who’s from Kentucky put me onto this whisky. It is great and have been stocking up on it.

this has been at the store down the street from me for a while and I never paid it any attention, this made me grab a bottle today and I am very happy I did. I might have to grab another to put away that is a steal at $40 a bottle.

Daniel, you said that this cannot be whiskey since it is finished. I am SUPER scared to call you out on this, but ... researching, the finishing doesn't seem to disqualify it from being whiskey?
Unqualified "whiskey" without a grain type identification such as "bourbon", "rye", or "corn" must be distilled at less than 95% alcohol by volume (190 proof) from a fermented mash of grain in such a manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma, and characteristics generally attributed to whiskey. It must be stored in oak containers - charred new oak is not required - and bottled at no less than 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).
So... why would finishing not make it whiskey?

Ok, this gets super nerdy.
In every possible way that the world considers something whiskey, it IS whiskey. But the US has all these rules around new oak and not moving things from one barrel to another.
So if you take whiskey out of one barrel, and move it into another barrel, you no longer have a whiskey product. You have now created what the TTB (Tax and Trade Bureau) considers a “distilled spirit specialty).
To get that you have to file for “recipe” approval that designates what you did to a product and the “title” of that recipe. Then you reference that “recipe title” on the front of your bottle label.
so for example, Angel’s Envy is (only according to TTB)not a whiskey. it’s a distilled spirits specialty.
The “recipe” could be "50 gallons of Kentucky bourbon moved into Port wine barrels for 6 months” or something like that. Once you file the recipe you can change volume and time without requiring new recipe approval, but you have to start with numbers of some sort.
Then in the “title” section of that “recipe” you call your “new” product “Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished in Port Wine Barrels”.
They approve your recipe.
When you file your application of label for the front of your bottle, you call the final bottled product “Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished in Port Wine Barrels” and reference the recipe they’ve already approved. That “title” is the official name of your distilled spirits specialty. So the only reason you’re allowed to have the word “whiskey” on that at all, is because TTB considers it to be the title of your recipe.

This is from winemaker Dave Phinney Who is in charge Orin swift wine. Finished in their Papillion barrels which is an amazing Bordeaux blend that he makes. No Surprise this whiskey is delicious since he makes incredible wines also

Hope there's still some left in one of the Sacramento area Total Wines when I'm down there in July. It sounds great, and at $40 a bottle, affordable.

I haven’t tried the slaughter house, but the straight edge bourbon whiskey is my go to

I'm making a 5 grain bourbon this winter, enough to fill a 26 gallon barrel. Thank God for my 8" column upgrade.
65% corn, 15% assorted barley, 8% rye, 6% oats, 6% wheat.
I'm really looking forward to it.

@@zewhiskeymeizzer9467 well, it'll be at least 3 years until it's going to be ready but I do have a four grain bourbon that's just turning the corner now at 8 months so that'll be ready in another year to give out the folks but that's oak sticks in a glass cowboy

Only one store near me had this in stock. This is a GREAT whiskey at the $40 price range. I'd actually swap out Eagle Rare at that price point for this based on the flavor and even more so the availability.
Try the Straight Edge. Even more flavor. Both amazing tho.
South East America would be Brazil! I would almost bet those finishing barrels were stored with the temp controlled wine barrels.

Both Kentucky and Tennessee are definitely in the Southeast. That is why both UK and UT are charter members of the Southeastern Conference.
At the Vineyard I work at we put certain wines into jack Daniel and misc bourbon barrels for the last 6 months of their aging process
Ok I keep having to scroll all the way down to the videos from 3 years ago to watch in order from where I left off, so I'm back to the top to save my thumb from falling off.
The broad definition of southeast US is south of the Mason Dixon line (PA/MD border) and east of the Mississippi river. So yes it could be KY or TN but it could also be VA, GA, FL, AL or any other states in that range.
I found this at a store for $20. It was a hell of a good buy

I doubt anyone will see this....or care at this point but what they might call southeast could come from the southeast conference in college football which would include Kentucky and Tennessee, among others.
Idea for the set whiskey. If you have already enjoyed all the tasty whiskey there is no need to put it back in the "prop bottle".

The Southeast Athletic Conference (SEC) includes schools in Tennessee and Kentucky, so why wouldn't a Californian consider whiskey sourced from those states as being from the southeastern US?

PBW is a great cleanser. Star-san for sanitation after the cleaning is done. As a practical matter though, a good water rinse should be enough.
