Fertilizing with the farm animal's waste and trimming back some of the dead and unwanted branches is a start to keeping the apples from spotting. Good luck. It helped us.

Was building road... pushing on a big stump and the Yellow Jackets boiled out taking their jackets off and handing their glasses to their buddy MAD!!! Got stung 27 times that time... probably the worst for me... also, I learned this day that they can operate a D-7 Cat as it was running and they were the ONLY ones on it!!!

I've been stung by wasps and yellow jackets. Allergic now to yellow jackets because the one incident (when I was a teenager) with them was a swarm, so I've learned how to be a yellow jacket detector and how to pretend to be nothing they're interested in so I don't get stung again! Apples are good raw and cooked - I like apples pretty much any way apples can be. I'd feel a little like that part of the Forrest Gump movie where Bubba is talking about all the ways to use shrimp if I listed all the ways I like apples. LOL Thanks for sharing the throwback to when y'all planted the apple trees - seeing the kids so small and now so tall made me smile!

With the pieces of apples and the peels, we make our own apple cider and vinegar. We also make a fruit leather with the apples for the grandkids. Best dessert is the apple cobbler! With homemade ice cream on top. We dry them and mix with nuts and raisins, sweeten oats with maple syrup for a trail mix. But last and best of all, we cook them and use as a nice side dish for chicken, lamb, turkey and duck. We eat them fresh everyday and enjoy handing them out to our pets as treats. They enjoy the apple season too. GOD BLESS you all!

Once when I was eight yrs. old, I was mowing the yard and got over a yellow jacket nest and was swarmed by them, and got stung many times, and four years ago, I was swarmed by hornets and got stung by them 9 times. They were in our well cap when I was trying to hook our hose to the well. I didn't think of flying critters, all I was thinking of was snakes being under there. It was very painful for a couple of days! Thank the Lord I'm not allergic!

I love your apple trees. Did you know that with all the sugar in the apples they will ferment? Once they ferment that will attract the yellow jackets and the hornets. When they eat on the fermented apples they get drunk and there is nothing worse than an ill tempered drunk yellow jacket or hornet. That's why it's best to keep them picked up. Once I had a whole bunch of them chase me back into the house. I had to go out that night to finish picking the rest up. Oh, and I make apple butter out of mine.

Got stung by hornets many years ago. I ran over a hornet nest while mowing and the buzzers went wild and attacked. By the time I got to the house, I had eight nasty welts coming on. the Family quickly got baking soda and made a damp paste and smeared each bite . I think they gave me Benadryl as well (can't remember, happened too fast). The baking soda treatment was continued for a couple of more days The mower over the nest caused the hornets to continued to attack the blades as it kept running until it ran out of gas. When I went out later in the cool of the evening to get the mower, there were no bees left. They apparently kept attacking until they were gone. Believe me, I approached very slowly and carefully and was extremely surprised when no bees appeared.

When I was 7 I was following behind the bigger kids and they jumped over a pile of sticks in the woods. I didn't make it and landing in the middle. I was wearing flip flops and a branch stuck between my foot pinning me in and as I kept trying to pull my foot free I disturbed a nest in the pile. By the time my friend (still friends 43 years later) got me out and he was stung they stoped counting my stings at 100. I was stung so many times in so many places that I lived in baking soda bath for almost a day. Now if I'm stung I just itch for a minute unless it's a wasp then it's intimated for a couple days only

79 years old, here, and never been stung by any of those guys. I have had bees on my finger to pet and didn't get stung. Once when staining the deck, a hornet, whose nest was in the eaves, came to check me out. She was getting too close to my face, so I blew on her to move her away. She moved, alright. Once those little wings had no air under them, she dropped right down the front of my tank top. Weird feeling. I pulled the top as far out from my chest as I could, and she just flew out. But still, she did not sting me. I can't help but think living things like me because of how close I can get to them. Sometimes they come to me. Like the butterfly that fluttered around until I put my hand up for it to land or the curious deer that came up to me when I was a child. Also a squirrel came to where I was sitting on the grass to check me out. (I live in the country.) Word must have gotten around: "Oh, she's the one who doesn't kill spiders, but puts them outside."

      No, it doesn't.
Many cultures have used lunar planting, including:
Ancient Egyptians: One of the first cultures to record the moon's influence on plant growth.
Ancient Babylonians: One of the first cultures to record the moon's influence on plant growth.
Traditional Chinese: Used a 24-part solar year divided into solar terms to predict the best times to plant and harvest crops.
Ancient Celts: Used a lunar calendar divided into 13 months of 28 days each, with each month named after a plant or tree.
Native North American cultures: Practiced lunar gardening.
Lunar gardening, or planting by the moon, is the practice of using the moon's phases to determine when to plant...

I just have a pear tree. Pears cannot ripen on the tree, because that means they are rotten. We pick deadfalls every day or two. Many are salvageable for chunky pear sauce. I make tons of pear sauce and freeze it. By picking deadfalls daily, they don't add up so the bees don't get so numerous. I was stung once, in my breast! I was holding a bunch of pears to my chest and missed a bee that didn't like what was happening. We peel and core the most ripe and cook lightly then chill and freeze. We repeat every few days as they ripen in a small frig we have. We soak in a mix of lemon juice and water as we peel and cut. We use a reaching tool to pick deadfalls, for safety. Our tree is at least 20 yrs old and we top it every couple yrs because it gets too tall to get the fruit even with a ladder and apple picker on a long pole. We clear pick the tree over the course of a week or two, processing the riper pears, leaving the greener ones to ripen in the frig. I make cakes and breads or eat the pears like apple sauce. I hope you wash the fruit well. My tree is near the road in our subdivision and the pears are dirty. I soak before we peel.
