So during a pandemic, when healthcare is very important...NYC cuts 5% of the police 5.9 billion budget while taking out 12% of the healthcare 1.9 billion budget. What?!

5% of 5.9 billion is 250,000,000. 12% of 1.9 billion is 228,000,000. They just took out the same amount of money. Vox will show you facts but not accurately.

This video is a strawman argument. The police are not here to punish, but to protect by enforcing laws.
The police are there to give safety of a person, from someone breaking the law.
The safety of each person is required before homelessness, healthcare or illness.
If the citizens of a society are free to commit crimes, then nothing you have; home, health, etc... matter.
So LAWS are required to protect us from each other, and police enforce those laws.
      Get it?
      ..
I do like the idea of sending appropriate responders to 911 calls, but I got a feeling, a guy thinking about killing himself waving a gun around... will make a mental health expert VERY hesitant to go in and talk to the guy without some police backup.

out here in Canada, most criminals surrender when the police arrive instead of resisting so there is little police-related violence. this is mostly because whenever a 911 call goes on regarding a suspect (robbery, housebreaking, stabbing,) instead of 2-4 cops you get a massive response of about 15 cops surrounding 2 suspects.

She's not saying that all black people are poor (although according to the 2018 census, black households' average income is 65% of the national average)
The main takeaway for me is that people at the "bottom" of society are also punished for it. I'm assuming you're not black, but imagine if you were: you would be 5x more likely to be imprisoned, you would very likely earn significantly less than you would if you were white, would be less likely to receive an adequate education etc.
The reasons for this are tied into the last 500 years of history, and are deeply engrained in the structures of the US. People like Patrisse are saying that policing is one of these structures that needs to be changed in order to right the wrongs of the past and help make a society where your skin colour doesn't determine whether or not you'll go to jail.

As a cop outside the US, this is really interesting and has helped me frame my understanding of this issue. In the UK the police (as well as many, many other public and community services) have been getting "defunded" for around ten years, and some areas are seeing increased crime, disorder, terrorist incidents and gang-related violence.
I completely support defunding the ridiculous militarisation of police in the US and we would all love to see increased funding for mental health services and community services.
But at 2am when someone is in mental health crisis or when children are at risk, the police are who attend and assist, rightly or wrongly (personally I want to help people, not arrest them, so I enjoy these kinds of calls, but some police do not).
I would argue that quality police funding leads to police being able to recruit the brightest and best, and could improve training that can save lives. I have also seen how understaffing can lead to increased use of force - if there are adequate cops to effect arrest on a violent offender, there is generally less need for an officer to use spray or baton.
But I fear that American culture means that increased funding for US cops won't be used to solve some of these problems.
I would not want to be a police officer in the US.

    • @raspberryzz
      @raspberryzz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +73

@James Bond Did you even watch the video? Defunding the police means redistributing those funds to other resources like mental health services, drug addiction professionals or social services; people who are better suited to do some of this work that for some reason is being handed over to the police. No one is saying to get rid of the police all together because that is impossible and they are needed especially for taking care of violent crimes but they never should've had such a huge budget to begin with when we could better use that money to fund other services that will be of better use to the community.

Doesn't that just mean that it's a bad slogan? If it doesn't communicate its intention effectively, then it does a bad job at being what it's supposed to be.
"Defund the police" makes some radicals cling onto it by implicitly overpromising something to the effect of "defund" = "abolish", and it scares off the majority of people who don't realize that "defund" is closer to "demilitarize" and "deemphasize" in intention.
Just seems like another instance of well-intentioned groups shooting themselves in the foot due to bad messaging.

The function of a slogan is such that if it requires effort on the part of the person reading the slogan to research it before they can make a judgement on it, then it's a bad slogan. Slogans are all about effective communication.
The only reason I'm able to make the comment I did is because I did research it and I do understand the actual policy proposals associated with it (the vast majority of which I agree with). But if your three word slogan has a gigantic asterisk that radically changes the meaning from what it appears to be at first glance, it reduces the likelihood of implementing those policy proposals, and it means it's a bad slogan.

The police are there to give safety of a person, from someone breaking the law.
The safety of each person is required before homelessness, healthcare or illness.
If the citizens of a society are free to commit crimes, then nothing you have; home, health, etc... matter.
