Ok so there’s a few different categories for genders: 1. Umbrella terms: this is the category where you’ll find trans and nonbinary, maybe even gender fluid and agender. It’s the most vague and easy to explain category, what you’d tell someone if they asked what your gender is. 2. Cultural genders: kinda self explanatory, it’s the genders that are a part of your culture 3. Refined genders: these are the genders that are still common, but more specific than just nonbinary. This is things like demiboy/demigirl, pangender, Omnigender, and so on 4. Niche genders: this is where I’d put neurodivergent genders, trauma based genders, oddly specific genders, and so on 5. Mogai genders: this is the category for genders that were made for just one or two people. These are the hyper specific genders that people made because no other gender was nuanced enough to truly define their gender. 6. Reclaimed/meme genders: this is the category where you’ll find genders made by people who wanted to either mock the community or just wanted to make a funny gender for one reason or another. These are the rarest genders by far, and a lot of them aren’t even achievable by any mortal means. This is probably the best way I can think of explaining it. Being said, this video was genuinely entertaining from my perspective of being nonbinary. Micro labeling can be seen as an issue, but if it isn’t hurting anyone then I’ve got no issues with it :)

I didnt know anything about the genders outside of the basic ones, and I was expecting a lot of just vibes and aesthetics and unrelated to gender genders not that those are all necessarily invalid, but a lot of these make a lot of sense. They're like simply descriptions of your relationship to gender. This has definitely made me more open minded to people's different experiences.
I find this kind of stuff so fascinating. Because while it can be fun to just look at and read about these abstract and sometimes silly sounding genders, if you take a step back and remember that most of these have at least one person who has it as part of their gender identity , it becomes so interesting to think about. Like how do people with these go interact with it on the day to day? Do they even treat gender the same way cis people do or is a whole different thing? To clarify, I'm not saying they're bad or weird, I'm just very interested.
I mean it's kind of difficult to explain. Considering gender is a social construct made up in our heads. No body will experience it the same as any body else. For most trans people they have a difficult time choosing between having an identity that will be validated by society. Or identify as the gender that makes them feel happy however no one will validate it for them
*Long ass essay incoming* I think what some people maybe don’t realise is that these online xenogenders are pretty much entirely co-opted by young neurodivergent (e.g. autistic) people. Now before someone comes in like “hahaha autistic” I’m being entirely serious - given that gender basically boils down to social norms, and not conforming to said norms is one of the core traits of autism (and many other neurodivergent conditions), it can be easy to see why so many ND people are non binary and gender nonconforming compared to the general population. In addition, being different to others around you and being dehumanised for who you are, as most ND people are, can be extremely isolating; combine this with the almost universal teenage desire for identity and community, and you get people processing the isolation they feel from being “different” not by trying to fit in with mainstream society, but by standing out further and channeling that feeling into their gender identity/expression with the use of super-precise labels. After all, you and the 5 other Tumblr users who identify with “catgender” would be able to bond and form a community over that shared experience. If I’m being honest, I don’t think many of these people have strong interpersonal connections outside of the internet; in addition to being ND, they may likely experience familial abuse, bullying by their peers, or just may struggle with connecting with others IRL. Thus, I’m pretty sure those in the more niche genders use those labels knowing how niche they are (so likely aren’t out IRL), and yet crave a deeper understanding and acceptance from others (not of their gender necessarily, but of their thoughts and feelings in general), hence the use of the most precise labels the English language can possibly provide. Did I mention that a lot of autistic people particularly tend to over-explain themselves due to feeling chronically misunderstood by others? Despite this, I think most of these people grow out of these microlabels, instead using more general labels like “genderqueer” or “non binary”, as they start to realise hyper-specifically pinpointing your gender identity is not always helpful. However, there are more specific neopronouns like it/its or xe/xem which seem to be often used among ND adults, but are relatively common compared to other neopronouns. Particularly, it/its pronouns often manifest as an ironic reclamation of the dehumanisation of marginalised groups (e.g. people referring to POC, trans people, disabled people, etc. as “it” as an insult), and xe/xem often denotes being non-binary, but existing completely separate from the male-female-neutral continuum. But then again, these all mean different things to different people; basically, non binary or not, gender is simply a vessel (if not the principal vessel) for self-expression. For cis and binary trans people, this is expressing what masculinity and femininity respectively mean to them, and for non binary people, it’s pretty much anything you want. And for some tumblr (and now insta/tiktok) teenagers, that means expressing whatever tumultuous inner world is going on at that point in your life, or just your extremely specific experience of being non binary, as a gender. Sorry this turned into a whole dissertation lol (though I just know someone is gonna reply like “ha ha no one cares”… well whatever). I was a big tumblr dweller as a young teenager, but I’ve also been in online communities with lots of right wingers (think nerdy stuff) so I’ve seen this whole phenomenon both firsthand and from the “omg liberals and their 72 genders are gonna destroy the West” perspective. Idk, I think it’s pretty interesting too, to be honest.

I didnt know anything about the genders outside of the basic ones, and I was expecting a lot of just vibes and aesthetics and unrelated to gender genders not that those are all necessarily invalid, but a lot of these make a lot of sense. They're like simply descriptions of your relationship to gender. This has definitely made me more open minded to people's different experiences.
I find this kind of stuff so fascinating. Because while it can be fun to just look at and read about these abstract and sometimes silly sounding genders, if you take a step back and remember that most of these have at least one person who has it as part of their gender identity , it becomes so interesting to think about. Like how do people with these go interact with it on the day to day? Do they even treat gender the same way cis people do or is a whole different thing? To clarify, I'm not saying they're bad or weird, I'm just very interested.
I mean it's kind of difficult to explain. Considering gender is a social construct made up in our heads. No body will experience it the same as any body else. For most trans people they have a difficult time choosing between having an identity that will be validated by society. Or identify as the gender that makes them feel happy however no one will validate it for them

I think what some people maybe don’t realise is that these online xenogenders are pretty much entirely co-opted by young neurodivergent (e.g. autistic) people.
Now before someone comes in like “hahaha autistic” I’m being entirely serious - given that gender basically boils down to social norms, and not
conforming to said norms is one of the core traits of autism (and many other neurodivergent conditions), it can be easy to see why so many ND people are non binary and gender nonconforming compared to the general population.
In addition, being different to others around you and being dehumanised for who you are, as most ND people are, can be extremely isolating; combine this with the almost universal teenage desire for identity and community, and you get people processing the isolation they feel from being “different” not by trying to fit in with mainstream society, but by standing out further and channeling that feeling into their gender identity/expression with the use of super-precise labels. After all, you and the 5 other Tumblr users who identify with “catgender” would be able to bond and form a community over that shared experience.
If I’m being honest, I don’t think many of these people have strong interpersonal connections outside of the internet; in addition to being ND, they may likely experience familial abuse, bullying by their peers, or just may struggle with connecting with others IRL. Thus, I’m pretty sure those in the more niche genders use those labels knowing how niche they are (so likely aren’t out IRL), and yet crave a deeper understanding and acceptance from others (not of their gender necessarily, but of their thoughts and feelings in general), hence the use of the most precise labels the English language can possibly provide. Did I mention that a lot of autistic people particularly tend to over-explain themselves due to feeling chronically misunderstood by others?
Despite this, I think most of these people grow out of these microlabels, instead using more general labels like “genderqueer” or “non binary”, as they start to realise hyper-specifically pinpointing your gender identity is not always helpful.
However, there are more specific neopronouns like it/its or xe/xem which seem to be often used among ND adults, but are relatively common compared to other neopronouns. Particularly, it/its pronouns often manifest as an ironic reclamation of the dehumanisation of marginalised groups (e.g. people referring to POC, trans people, disabled people, etc. as “it” as an insult), and xe/xem often denotes being non-binary, but existing completely separate from the male-female-neutral continuum.
But then again, these all mean different things to different people; basically, non binary or not, gender is simply a vessel (if not the principal vessel) for self-expression. For cis and binary trans people, this is expressing what masculinity and femininity respectively mean to them, and for non binary people, it’s pretty much anything you want. And for some tumblr (and now insta/tiktok) teenagers, that means expressing whatever tumultuous inner world is going on at that point in your life, or just your extremely specific experience of being non binary, as a gender.
Sorry this turned into a whole dissertation lol (though I just know someone is gonna reply like “ha ha no one cares”… well whatever). I was a big tumblr dweller as a young teenager, but I’ve also been in online communities with lots of right wingers (think nerdy stuff) so I’ve seen this whole phenomenon both firsthand and from the “omg liberals and their 72 genders are gonna destroy the West” perspective. Idk, I think it’s pretty interesting too, to be honest.

this is my take on why it's worth taking seriously:
the gender stuff in this video is just ways of describing a person with imperfect language! I can understand finding it confusing and counterproductive but 'stupid' doesn't make much sense to me. in my mind the creation and identification with these genders speak to people grappling with what gender even means personally/societally/essentially and how people can interact with it. I think being encouraging and inquisitive towards people with a neogender you don't understand can encourage them to think through what they're trying to communicate and how -- and help you understand that language better and what social context it's coming from.
