I think a big reason that the fetishes on the conservative side are more disgust based could very well be caused by the much higher religiosity of that demographic. A very large amount of religious beliefs center around the idea of sex being sinful and thus immortal outside of specific circumstances. I could imagine that to someone who was raised with that view of sexuality "disgust play" as a general category would feel like a natural way to make sex more intense. Just a thought based on the additional correlation between conservatism and religion.

Corn exists, and humans are typically hormonal enough (generalization) to identify a specific fetish, if not in practice then through second hand exposure or online research. A lot of fetishes can just develop naturally through personal experiences or in response to things we’re exposed to or traumatized by and we can either find ways to engage in them safely with other consenting adults, or just not act on them. As for the pdf thing, yeah it was a pretty weird inclusion for this kind of study, but I guess the argument there is that by technical definition pdfillia does involve the fetishization of minors so in that way it can be classified as a type of fetish. I wouldn’t put too much thought on it though since I don’t think either of these two are experts on sexual health or the scientific method. They probably did mean for it to be understood as something with negative implications tho and not just a casual thing people indulge in for fun.

Two issues I have with this study. 1: If the participants knew the purpose of this, I’m sure there would be people who pick taboo kinks and pick the opposite political association to skew the results intentionally. Two: The more taboo options have less picks, so if only one person selected being a dirty pedo, wherever they put themselves on the chart is where it sticks, with no other datapoints to pull the dot. Id wanna see an interactive chart where it only charts one kink at a time so we can see the density of the selections
A lot of times people only get told afterwards what the purpose of a study was to exactly prevent such things from happening. When the sample data is too small you should also usually not include it. For example if only one single person would pick pedophilia then it most likely wouldn't get included. But I'd also like the dots to show how common it is instead of how taboo it is.

Woah, I love that you even interviewed Aella! This fetish tabooness/popularity chart has been one of my favorite plots for quite some time and I have shared it with so many friends. And relating it to political ideology is quite fascinating as well. After all, when you have any kind of kink (just like the word says), you can feel somehow "out of the ordinary" - some more, some less, depending on how taboo it is. So there's this duality and this tension between "feeling accepted" (being confident with your kink and having people around you who are also into it) and "feeling not accepted" (and being secretive or shameful about it). And then there are political ideologies: Just like with a kink, any kind of ideology can either make you feel left out, because you feel that "you are different from everyone around you", or it makes you feel an incredible sense of connection of having found "your people". I think the world would benefit a lot when people will realize that, when it comes to the human need for social connections, political ideologies and fetishes are really similar. Because in both cases, the more you feel this duality, the more extreme it will get. At the same time, of course kinks are incredibly deeply engrained in someone's being. While many, at least when they are reflected people, can retrace which aspects of their upbringing led to which political ideology, that's so much harder with kinks. But obviously people who are on any end of the political spectrum and who are "against" the other end are not reflected, because their fundamental doctrine is opposition instead of unity. Now, when kinks enter the picture, suddenly ideological people are confronted with this paradox in their being, just like you mentioned about dirtiness, ageplay etc.: They start identifying more and more with this inner fight between their political ideology and their kinks, but instead of working on themselves and aiming to find peace of mind, they shut down any intention to unify these opposing forces within them and start projecting that fight outwards and do even more collateral damage to everyone around them. What I'm essentially saying: Many, many extremists from any end of the spectrum would eventually benefit heavily from sexual healing and resolving sexual repression within themselves. Of course some kinks can certainly be problematic, but the *root* of these problems always lays in unresolved emotional or psychological conflicts. So just like with politicians, we can either "lock them up" and hope that the problem will go away (even though obviously it won't) or we address them with compassion and understanding, helping them confront and integrate these parts of themselves to reduce the destructive impact of repression on both their personal and political lives.
Just remember folks: take all this with a grain of salt. If it seems like it absolutely confirms your suspicions of one side or the other? Take it with A MASSIVE amount of salt.

i think this type of research would be waaaaay more interesting if it included data on whether the person with the fetish enjoys it as a giver, as a receiver, as an observer, or as a purely hypothetical situation. a fetish or kink (they do have some differences) could be enjoyable as spoken or ideated foreplay, but be a turn-off if realized. same with observing, someone may greatly enjoy seeing something happen between two parties, but not ever want to be directly involved with it

Self-selection bias doesn't just mean 'self-selecting in ways that you're trying to measure in the study, or ways that you're aware of and are actively trying to mitigate from appearing in your study group.' E.g. this has a strong self-selection for the kinds of habitual internet users that would fill out a survey as this one. If that group of people has any leanings that mean they aren't a perfect scatter of both political spectrum, and of sexual fetish interests, then that's just one extra factor that can distort the results.

So while I wouldn't try and make any certain claims/beliefs about anything this survery might tell us, it could make for an interesting first step to see if there is anything to this idea.

I think you’re getting at something. My take was that liblefts are generally more accepting of their identities, whilst authrights are more repressed and afraid to confront themselves. This would make leftist fetishes hot to them simply because they enjoy it, whilst right wing fetishes are hot to them because they’re repressing their true identities and that suppression is what fuels their attraction. @@dougthedonkey1805 many of the fetishes on the list are quite extreme, so I would say they are relatively rare among the general population in those political groups. the right wing is generally about order, hierarchy and traditional gender roles. it seems to me that right wing fetishes are either traditional gender power dynamics taken to the extreme, or they are the reversal of those roles. men dominating women and women dominating men shows up on the far left, probably because they see men and women as equal and so there is a taboo around traditional dynamics, men will feel ashamed of wanting to dominate women, women will feel ashamed of wanting to be dominated. most men prefer dominating and most women prefer submission, so the right just follows what's natural, it's the left which would be ashamed of being attracted to those "old fashioned" dynamics, so there is a taboo surrounding it. likewise, the left also probably recognises that men and women are not equal physically, so women dominating men is also taboo, even though if men and women are equal then it shouldn't be taboo, it should be normal. so i would say it's the left which suppresses most of their true feelings and turn them into taboos.

I think a big reason that the fetishes on the conservative side are more disgust based could very well be caused by the much higher religiosity of that demographic. A very large amount of religious beliefs center around the idea of sex being sinful and thus immortal outside of specific circumstances. Corn exists, and humans are typically hormonal enough (generalization) to identify a specific fetish, if not in practice then through second hand exposure or online research. A lot of fetishes can just develop naturally through personal experiences or in response to things we’re exposed to or traumatized by and we can either find ways to engage in them safely with other consenting adults, or just not act on them.
As for the pdf thing, yeah it was a pretty weird inclusion for this kind of study, but I guess the argument there is that by technical definition pdfillia does involve the fetishization of minors so in that way it can be classified as a type of fetish. I wouldn’t put too much thought on it though since I don’t think either of these two are experts on sexual health or the scientific method. They probably did mean for it to be understood as something with negative implications tho and not just a casual thing people indulge in for fun.

Two issues I have with this study.
1: If the participants knew the purpose of this, I’m sure there would be people who pick taboo kinks and pick the opposite political association to skew the results intentionally.
Two: The more taboo options have less picks, so if only one person selected being a dirty pedo, wherever they put themselves on the chart is where it sticks, with no other datapoints to pull the dot.
Id wanna see an interactive chart where it only charts one kink at a time so we can see the density of the selections
The second point wouldn't be that hard to fix, tell the participants that they are gonna be totally anonymous
A lot of times people only get told afterwards what the purpose of a study was to exactly prevent such things from happening. When the sample data is too small you should also usually not include it. For example if only one single person would pick pedophilia then it most likely wouldn't get included. But I'd also like the dots to show how common it is instead of how taboo it is.

A lot of sciences, specifically psychology, have a lot of trouble with studies that contain human participants, because things like lying and pride exists, where in other species, it's not likely that they even really understand the full extent of what's happening when a study is taking place. They are just reacting to their immediate environment
So what you need to do is skip over what they think entirely. Record physical reactions to stimuli that is associated with a fetish instead. (stuff like hormone levels, erection status, however the hell you measure AFAB turned on status, etc.)
Problem is that this would require a lot more funding and would drive away a lot of participants, specifically those who have taboo fetishes and don't want to admit it

Woah, I love that you even interviewed Aella! This fetish tabooness/popularity chart has been one of my favorite plots for quite some time and I have shared it with so many friends.
And relating it to political ideology is quite fascinating as well. After all, when you have any kind of kink (just like the word says), you can feel somehow "out of the ordinary" - some more, some less, depending on how taboo it is. So there's this duality and this tension between "feeling accepted" (being confident with your kink and having people around you who are also into it) and "feeling not accepted" (and being secretive or shameful about it).
And then there are political ideologies: Just like with a kink, any kind of ideology can either make you feel left out, because you feel that "you are different from everyone around you", or it makes you feel an incredible sense of connection of having found "your people". I think the world would benefit a lot when people will realize that, when it comes to the human need for social connections, political ideologies and fetishes are really similar. Because in both cases, the more you feel this duality, the more extreme it will get.
At the same time, of course kinks are incredibly deeply engrained in someone's being. While many, at least when they are reflected people, can retrace which aspects of their upbringing led to which political ideology, that's so much harder with kinks. But obviously people who are on any end of the political spectrum and who are "against" the other end are not reflected, because their fundamental doctrine is opposition instead of unity.
Now, when kinks enter the picture, suddenly ideological people are confronted with this paradox in their being, just like you mentioned about dirtiness, ageplay etc.: They start identifying more and more with this inner fight between their political ideology and their kinks, but instead of working on themselves and aiming to find peace of mind, they shut down any intention to unify these opposing forces within them and start projecting that fight outwards and do even more collateral damage to everyone around them.
What I'm essentially saying: Many, many extremists from any end of the spectrum would eventually benefit heavily from sexual healing and resolving sexual repression within themselves. Of course some kinks can certainly be problematic, but the *root* of these problems always lays in unresolved emotional or psychological conflicts. So just like with politicians, we can either "lock them up" and hope that the problem will go away (even though obviously it won't) or we address them with compassion and understanding, helping them confront and integrate these parts of themselves to reduce the destructive impact of repression on both their personal and political lives.
Just remember folks: take all this with a grain of salt.
If it seems like it absolutely confirms your suspicions of one side or the other? Take it with A MASSIVE amount of salt.

Age does not define political view, but older people were raised in a wildly different world than the young. And I reckon the majority of your core is formed as child.
Studies outside of this particular one also back up the idea that age does not correlate with political view, though. There's a very slight tendency that the older you are, the more conservative you are. That seems to be the consistent conclusion in several studies.

Maybe it's cos I haven't studied the graph long enough, but what seems interesting to me is that the Right fetishes seemed to be antithetical to Right ideologies, while the Left fetishes tended to be more consistent with Left ideologies.
In that sense it makes sense that vore ended up on the left side of the graph on both genders - there's no more literal way to enact "from each according to his ability to each according to his need" than literally feeding yourself to someone.

I think you’re getting at something. My take was that liblefts are generally more accepting of their identities, whilst authrights are more repressed and afraid to confront themselves. This would make leftist fetishes hot to them simply because they enjoy it, whilst right wing fetishes are hot to them because they’re repressing their true identities and that suppression is what fuels their attraction.
Just a leftist’s warped view of the world, though, so take it with a grain of salt :)
@@dougthedonkey1805 many of the fetishes on the list are quite extreme, so I would say they are relatively rare among the general population in those political groups. the right wing is generally about order, hierarchy and traditional gender roles. it seems to me that right wing fetishes are either traditional gender power dynamics taken to the extreme, or they are the reversal of those roles. men dominating women and women dominating men shows up on the far left, probably because they see men and women as equal and so there is a taboo around traditional dynamics, men will feel ashamed of wanting to dominate women, women will feel ashamed of wanting to be dominated. most men prefer dominating and most women prefer submission, so the right just follows what's natural, it's the left which would be ashamed of being attracted to those "old fashioned" dynamics, so there is a taboo surrounding it. likewise, the left also probably recognises that men and women are not equal physically, so women dominating men is also taboo, even though if men and women are equal then it shouldn't be taboo, it should be normal. so i would say it's the left which suppresses most of their true feelings and turn them into taboos.

I mean, how we think about fetishes is kind of interesting to me. The reflex is to think that raceplay, for example, is necessarily an indication of someone's proclivities. However, we don't generally think the same is true for fans of horror movies, or sports. Sometimes something is just a sexy fantasy. My guess would have been age as a confounding factor, the more extreme taboos skewing further left, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
