Have you considered electrified reload with an ammo build? I find one shot can kill bugs and two shots kill pretty much anything else.

The game is enough challenging without mods for the first 100 hours? It looks fun but i heard the vanilla game is too easy
There are no mods installed here xDI have 1.5k hours and this vanilla highest difficulty is challenging enough)
