Evanescence - Bring Me To Life - Amy Lee - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Tutorial
Amy Lee is just an all-around great musician and in “Bring Me To Life” she also demonstrates what a great songwriter she is.
Her use of really interesting note choices and unusual harmonies was untypical for that time and she really knew how to take listeners on an emotional rollercoaster with her major to minor key changes.
What other artists can you think of that were also great at doing that? Let me know in the comments!
As we take a look at Amy’s isolated vocals I’ll explain how she raises her larynx at some points for effect and how she uses dynamic range and volume to create that melodramatic sound.

You can listen to more than a few of her songs. Amy does auto tune. As Amy says she doesn't change her hitting the notes. But how the notes sound. A perfect example of that is Lose Control. She gives her voice a eerie sound I guess you could say. That's using auto tuning the way it should be used. It should never be used to hit a note. If you can't hit the note then don't sing it. If you a writer change it to a note you can hit.

I am so surprised and impressed you picked up on the Celtic folk influences in just her vocals, holy shit. I remember her saying in an interview many years ago that in her home growing up her family would listen to and play a lot of Celtic folk music together. Amazing video! Fun facts about her influences: She's spoken about being obsessed with 90's grunge, particularly females. She was the choir president at high school and even arranged an original piece for their graduation called Listen To The Rain. She decided to learn the piano at age 11 after watching the film Armadeus and wanted to compose classical music, and later score films. She's also a fan of Danny Elfman and a megafan of Bjork so her references are all over the place. She's a real musician through and through! No wonder they were able to create something so unique and special

I never knew all this info about Amy Lee and I have been a huge fan of all things Evanescence since 10th grade high school in 2000. I have literally all their discography (yes, even the 'Hello'' home video) and for the life of me have tried to match her vocals in my male singing voice, but my register may just be too damn low. Thank you for sharing this gem of information, Amy Lee truly is someone unique and special in the rock & roll/ gothic rock world!

She inspired me to start singing when I was a teen but I think it got me stuck in chest voice for years and I forced-simulated her tone and it would blow me out with vocal fatigue. Now im trying to relearn singing from the ground up and learning a lot from Ken’s videos!

the song was already good, and her vocals were already amazing, but the reworked version without the rap in it , which was much more orchestral, from the 2017 Synthesis album was really something else. Such a wonderful and powerful operatic voice on this girl

I’ve been working on an Amy Lee singing impression ever since my high school choir teacher and best friends pointed out that my singing sounded similar to hers. I had originally looked up to her as a talented and accomplished musician and singer and tried to apply some of her singing technique to my own singing. And learning from her technique made me a stronger singer.
The real funny thing is that I’ve auditioned for an a capella group in high school, which was run by my choir teacher. I wasn’t even trying to imitate Amy Lee or had sung an Evanescence song for my audition, but my choir teacher pointed out to me that my voice sounded similar to hers. So here I am, a year later, still a big fan of Amy Lee and my best friends jokingly call me the “discount Amy Lee”.

This video actually really helped me improve my high note vocal register. I absolutely love Evanescence (since H.S. 2003) and have been trying to duet with her songs on my own forever. This is the only lesson series where I could finally learn how to match her vocals and sing along with her, in a sense. Thank you so much for your amazing and insightful lessons, Ken!

There's different ways she kinda has done this. She has singed with Lindsey Stirling and a whole orchestra behind her. Look for their quarantine version of "Wasted On You" it's Lindsey ft Amy. Then their live cover Young and Beautiful from Lana del Rey they did in 2018 works that way too..... Evanescence Synthesis tour has a My Immortal string version, songs like Lacrymosa, Never go Back and End of The Dream are justa bout her vocals and tons of strings with her live. Go check it out. Also her acoustic performances with cello signing Lithium and Good Enough from 2007 are a must watch if you like strings and her vocals. And last but not least her solo work with Dave Eggar, "Find a way" is a song to react aswell

Ironically you mentioned a lot of her inspirations: Danny elfman or Nine Inch Nails. She always wanted to do scores and in between Evanescence S albums she did a couple of film scores and got awards even.
I d recommend you to react to their recent stuff. The Bitter Truth is the current album they released this year and it’s the first they do as an indie band. It d be great to see the growth as a band.
If you go for the intro you ll be mind blowed by the comeback they make. The songs are: “Artifact/the turn + broken pieces shine”.

She held the note for 10 seconds. Ken held it for 8 seconds. Still amazing. There is an 8-second note in the song "I'll" Be by Edwin McCain that I love singing.

Thanks for doing this one Ken! Love her voice so much. I could literally listen to her sing all day. She has such a beautiful voice, but also a great pianist, songwriter and lyricist. She's another one that grew up singing in choir and you can definitely tell. This song was actually inspired by her longtime friend Josh who is now her husband. Also, please don't take this as nitpicking but i would have loved to hear Breathe No More. I'm not sure if you're familiar with that one. It is a B side but it is this beautiful piano ballad, Even In Death would be another great choice too.

Amy Lee's sound is so melancholic. Minor 7ths & 9ths are her signatures... I love working with them for the one reason: They make the resolution back to the home chord smoother. Yup, I can definitely hear the raised larynx on the word (lead) the Cmaj7 at the fist verse. Then again when she holds that long word life also Cmaj7 at the end... so awesome... I wondered what the song would sound in a little less darker tonality like the E Dorian Mode? In this case we would have a C# (half diminished) a raised sixth degree instead of a C natural... Not much we have to do since the song is in minor key already... Just an opinion!!!!

Fun fact; Amy Lee never wanted to duet with a male vocalist on 'Bring Me to Life' as she was forced to do so by the record company because they thought it would improve the band's image.
As such, there is an alternative version with only Amy Lee on vocals. And yes, of course I have that version of this song as well.
