It’s incredible how knowledgeable you are it’s weird so many things that you talk about I did as a self-taught vocalist. I haven’t sang a note in 10 years. What always gets me about Morton is the ease and smoothness of the transition. Many can sing it, and Ken is amazing, but no one duplicates the smoothness of the transition.
Seeing him in concert three times (and I'm operatically trained), it's not all tricks in studio. He seriously can belt it, even in falsetto and no back up but the two other members. He amazed me every time I saw him.
When i heard his G on High and low i was convinced he had a lot of classical training. He is a very good light tenor with a lot of richness on the lower 4rth octave and he can even hit the 2nd very nicely live (A2s i mean) without losing his timbre. I really like his voice and his vocal agility. Nowdays he lost a lot of vocal weight but maybe he does not have the time he used to have back then to maintain his voice
I've seen him sing live off stage, he has such a very distinct angelic voice he doesn't need any technology to reach any notes he wants sometimes you can't tell the transition to falsetto.
Morten Harket is a Norwegian treasure, along with Magne Furuholmen, and Pal Waaktaar Savoy! I got to see them perform in Oslo, and they were incredible! Morten held a record for the longest note held at one time, but he wasn’t included in your longest note held video. He has many nuances in the way he sings. Check out Summer Moved On, and Manhattan Skyline! Of the three members of a-ha, Morten picked up a British accent while living in England for five years, to mesh with his lovely Norwegian accent. At age 62, he hasn’t lost the ability to sing any of a-ha’s numerous, great songs! a-ha is huge all over the world except the USA, although they sell out every concert they have here! All of this, and Morten is drop dead gorgeous! 😊🇳🇴
Morten Harket is a brilliant singer. It is not just his vocal range that makes him exceptional, but also the versatility in his voice. Sometimes he has this "boyish" and bell-clear vocal sound, but he can also deliver more of an edgy, more "masculine" vocal, sometimes even with a bit of rasp. He can sound vulnerable but also confident. You have to know that the two other guys in a-ha wrote the majority of their songs and they said it's interesting to write songs like that because they can further Harket's vocal abilities through their songwriting. I like that you've noticed that he sounds like a mixture of Norwegian and British. That's because obviously they're from Norway, but they moved to London in the very early stage of their career and recored their first album there. a-ha is (in North America at least) quite an underated band. They have influenced bands like Coldplay. They have some many other great songs. I call them the fathers of Northland pop 🇳🇴💪☺️.
As a Norwegian and a drummer married to a singer(!), this was so much fun!! In norway, this song is considered an Norwegian anthem, and rightly so! A superpowerful song. Really great songwriting, written by Paul Waaktaar (the guitarist in the band). All the guys a Norwegian, but they recorded the song in England with a british producer. Scoundrel days, the bands second album is one of my alltime favourites. 80`s indeed, but incredible songwriting, first and foremost.
Thank you very much Ken: as always a great analyse! For me Morten Harket ist not only about singing high notes and stamina. The quality of his tone and lightness is unprecedented for a Male singer in modern music.
This singer Morten has some insane vocals in his other music throughout the decades ... he still tours with the band , just brilliant ! Thanks for the video
Morten has everything. A Great voice that he uses with inteligence. Great taste! I'm a metalhead and still listen to a-ha next to Megadeth. 😄 A-ha is a metal power in Pop Music.
Thank you for sharing this. I'm one who appreciates good music no matter what genre it's in, even though I'm mainly into jazz & hard rock. I've been a fan of A-Ha since 1986 and Morten's voice still sounds incredible. The chorus starting low and building up is something I enjoy hearing. Thank you for breaking this down for us.
Dude, this is when Morten is so much older. In the original what was so cool is how he steps the notes up 8 times. Take (1) on (2) Me (3). Take (3) Me (4) Home (5). I'll (5) Be (6) Gone (7). In a day or (7) two (8).
The melody is so adventurous. Think of all the male pop stuff in one octave, and then this song comes out. And he uses a major 7th interval, right?? Unusual for the time. Nobody sounded like this. Thanks Ken, awesome song choice to analyze!
I saw an interview with Sebastian Bach years ago and he basically said that this song was a guilty pleasure when asked what song he listens to that would surprise everyone. He admittedly said that he even had a tough time hitting that high note. Ken makes it look easy. It still is really tough to do. Thanks Ken!!
I think what you are missing or at least what you didn't address is his vocal phrasing and amazingly tight vibrato on the high notes. When you sang it, you did not sing the vibrato, just a straight note. Quite a few people can belt out anything but a true innovator masters control and phrasing. For example, he rounds out his low notes in a husky tone to give depth. I have always thought his voice was beautiful and clear. He is not just singing notes but telling the emotional story of the song. Listen to the rest of Hunting High and Low, and you will hear a dynamic singer who is perfectly in the emotional pocket of the song and conveys it magnificently.
Thanks for choosing this one. He is an incredible vocalist. I love the warm quality in his lower notes and how he manages to find the same in his falsetto. I’ve covered this on acoustic and managed to do it, but needs more polish. Thanks to your demo I might consider it again. I’m a mezzo, I can’t even imagine how dudes can sing this
I love how free your voice is as you demo everything. I've lost my upper range because of bad habits. But I watch your teaching and think, "Yes, I can get it back." Thanks for being excellent and clear in your teaching.
Thank you for this video. I saw a-ha performing London live 2016 and twice in Oslo 2016. He still got that amazing voice. I read in some magazine that when they are in London it´s like their second home. Norwegian is the first one.
I'm Norwegian and a-ha is one of the few Norwegian bands that made it great in US and UK. Morten Harket's voice is legenadary. The band lived in England for a while, trying to break through, which probably affected their accents.
I would love to hear you analyse a-ha's Scoundrel Days. Morten's voice is unbelievable in that one, as well as in all other songs a-ha's ever made. ❤️ 🙂 Also, his solo albums are a marvel to the ear.
Heard a lot of cover singers hit the mark....but his pronounciation and tone are different and that makes it special for this song. Kudos to the review....always spot on. keep rockin!
The on in the 'take me on' phrase already sounds pretty much like headvoice/falsetto. Or let's call it a Mix, even though I really don't like that term. It's definitely not belted
Yes. This is a fantastic analysis of Morten. A-Ha were utterly beyond massive over here in Europe, with so many other songs aside from Take on Me that showcased their superb pop craft. Still can take on all arenas and sell 'em out here too, without relying on this track to fall back on. Great stuff here! Have you heard "Manhattan Skyline", and "Stay on these Roads"'? Absolutely brilliant songs inwhich Harket's voice elevates higher than Everest in certain occasions.

Thanks for doing this video Ken! This is one of my most favorite songs and I think the singer is incredibly talented. I really loved your cover of it too.
His delivery is so much more gentle than I thought. What I initially thought was a very high register tenor voice (obviously I knew the chorus is falsetto) is actually a matter of great technique as he switches between head and chest throughout the entire song. Fantastic voice control. It's incredible how different vocals sound without the music backing it. Gotta say though...I hate the little vocalizations he does that you can't really make out with the music, it sounds so douchey to me lol. Love this song though.
In the 80s, the generation I grew up in, MTV had motley crew, poison and Def. Leopard videos.then this song was right there with them.WOW!!!! The memories. Thank you Ken for posting this song and covering all the greats.im a huge fan of yours, and who you are and what you do.take care, hope to see more soon
Absolutely one of the greatest videos you have ever done. I would say top 10 of all your videos ever. This song is in my top five favorite songs of all time. I love love love this song and can't stay still whenever it plays. I am loving this video and feel like I have so much to say but I want to get back to watching it. This will be a video I'll have to watch at least twice maybe three times and save it. Very cool Ken👍🥰
Love how the A-Ha guy finds it easier to slide from strong loud chest voice to softer chest voice (second verse ‘things that you say - AD-LIB’) - it’s that ad-lib I’m talking about. I know you call that push/pull dynamic thing a ‘crooner’ technique, but whatever it is I have no idea how he manages it with his voice. I’m not a singer but can belt and use falsetto; I find it fascinating hearing these other parts of people’s voices. Great video: lovely to hear your knowledge and passion.
Ok, you are some kind of magician. I sing along with records and usually get stuck on high notes and crack. Don’t think of myself as a singer and have never learned anything about it. I just sing what feels good. I honestly only just discovered your channel today, and you got me, in ONE TRY, right through that chorus and up to that high note. I have never been able to get close to it before. Wow. I’m geeking out over your stuff! 💕💕💕
A-Ha spent quite a time in London UK before making the breakthrough so perhaps that has had the effect. Imo "Hunting High And Low" the song presents Harket better.
I have two questions. In some videos Morten seems to have some object in his left hand and when he sings high he brings both hands to the mic. Does he have a second mic or is he just holding the cord to the mic? The other question is he seems to figit with the knob on what might be his mic or his ear piece on his belt. What is he doing?
I know he was a chorus boy, but did he have a beautiful voice to begin with that had a lot a training as he was growing up. From what I've read about the band, his voice had a reputation around Oslo by his late teens.

Cool voice. New wave era. One of the many popular new wave songs. Love this series. Fun to discover how the singer/artist sings nakedly and see their attitude and influences. You can only get these discussions only in KTVA. Thanks sir Ken.
Just woke up from a nap and started listening to this. My energy is up there! Grabbed a Les Paul and started singing and wailing. Took a couple of moments for the chills to stop. Great job!
Stunning voice & amazing song, fully deserving it’s 1.1b views on here. Did you check out the unplugged video recorded a few years back? Very different but will blow you away! It’s also interesting to see how the song evolved from its initial release in 1984 which went under the radar to the 1985 rerelease that went stratospheric to the unplugged interpretation. A-ha also did one of my favourite Bond themes for my favourite James Bond. The Living Daylights ST was the last to be scored by the great John Barry & also features two very differently sounding tracks from the Pretenders. A-ha also did a wonderful version of this title track unplugged. I believe someone once said that Morten had the greatest falsetto in pop, hard to argue against that.
I managed to accidentally delete my initial comment instead of editing it, brain fart :( Luckily I type them out in notes & paste them in so could repost. I did get notification of & see your reply to it Ken, and if I could I would have clicked like on it, beautiful indeed :-)
How do you relax and release your vocal folds to hit that highest note? My throat tightens and I can't get past "I'll be gone". I have to drop back to lower chest voice.
Thanks for the analysis. I actually learned from an interview with Morton that you need to take chances when you sing and so just see where each song will take your own unique voice. I can't sing but his advice gave me the confidence to learn an acoustic version. So, I do not mind the sound of my own voice when I sing it. To me, Morton Harket is the most beautiful and angelic voice found in all of pop music.
I was an 80s kid and although I wasn’t a fan of A-HA he has a beautiful voice that I’m just now realizing. I’d love to hear you analyze Phil Anselmo doing Cemetery Gates. His voice goes from so smooth and sexy to gritty so seamlessly.
Great videos Ken. You’re attracting a wide audience of music lovers with this series not just singers. I’ve learn a ton about fx, mics, vocal styles and the fact these gods of music are humans with faults just like rest of us. You Rock✌️
I remember back when this song came out and I was working in a Mall-attached KMart, and there was this guy who worked in the Pizza place downstairs and he loved this song and wondered often how someone could sing "like that". I remember studying this vocal then (as a drummer who happens to sing) to try to figure out "what makes this vocal great" and learned a lot from studying it about how to accomplish some of these things with my own voice. It's a bit of gymnastics for an untrained singer, but when you really break down what it is, it's really about being able to take as much advantage of your own RANGE as possible. For me, it's actually a little harder to hit the first "TAKE" in the chorus than the high notes.
Amazing analysis again Ken! great job!! thanks!!! also love his voice on "hunting high and low" where he displays what i think is great combo of feeling and technique. Cheers!!
Hello there, morten is one of my favourite singers. His voice is amazing and powerful. You gave me an interesting insight of his voice. Can you please do Marian Gold from Alphaville? Thanks
@@kentamplin i always enjoy your lessons! Morten lived in London for several years so he learned the language with a British accent, where I come come from.😃
Thank you for this great video and for all your other content. I do also have a barriton voice and was surprised, that i have no real problem to sing the chorus a few times in a row if done as you explained. The E5 is not very hard for me and still feels comfortable without vibrato. When i began singing, i had absolutely no falsetto voice, but i kept trying and developed it over the years. Your videos help me a lot, to learn how to sing much more relaxed with much lower strain and i can understand, how the voice works, and how to keep it healthy. I am loving the isolated vocals series and am looking forward for you next video :)
If I remember right, Morten Harket learned to sing in a choir He was a part of the Norwegian choir Sølvguttene in his youth. The choir has a bit of fame in Norway since they're always officially singing the holidays in on TV and have been since forever.
Actually Morten never was a part of Sølvguttene. I just checked an old TV-program where he said so. Although he sang with the choir at least once on Norwegian Television, NRK. If I remember right, he sang with a Christian choir as a young boy.

Rock on.
Awesome!
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Love this song
Love this man
And love your videos 💕
Great work!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
@@kentamplin I love my electronic/pop music but I will rock on in my own way! Look forward to seeing more of your stuff!
Love that!
Morten has got the largest vocal rage on planet (5/8)
Might I suggest you take a look at the late, great Michael Hutchence of INXS. Amazing and unique voice with multiple isolated tracks on TH-cam.
Thanks for the suggestion!
i have a 22 track master session of this version of the song. has scratch vocals on there where he burps and everything :P
Rock on!
Thank you very much Ken for reviewing his vocals. This is such an iconic song. I love your version of this as well! Great analysis!
My pleasure!
Love to hear you sing hunting high and low Ken or the sun always shines on tv
👍😀
👍😀
👍👍👍👍👍👍
One of my all time fave songs😍
Great!
A-Ha spent quite a time in London UK before making the breakthrough so perhaps that has had the effect.
Imo "Hunting High And Low" the song presents Harket better.
Thanks for weighing in!
The way you sing "GOOOONE" around 10:28 reminded me just how badass your voice is ken. Much love and great analysis!
Appreciate that!
I know he was a chorus boy, but did he have a beautiful voice to begin with that had a lot a training as he was growing up. From what I've read about the band, his voice had a reputation around Oslo by his late teens.
Thanks for listening.
You are such. A. Good! Teacher! You offer a lot of value even on TH-cam, although I personally know that the course goes much further.
You are so welcome!
Have you seen the viking on the masked singer UK version? Do you think its Morten? I cannot post a link
I'll have to check that out!
@@kentamplin If I post a link in the comment section it will be blocked by default, but it is very easy to find. The media is going all crazy over it. You really should check it out!
This is one of my favorite songs. 🤟🤟🤟
It's a good one!
@@kentamplin The 80’s had strange music, but some of the best ever too!!!
Cool voice. New wave era. One of the many popular new wave songs. Love this series. Fun to discover how the singer/artist sings nakedly and see their attitude and influences. You can only get these discussions only in KTVA. Thanks sir Ken.
Glad you are enjoying this series!
Fascinated again ! Ken you rule
Rock on!
Just woke up from a nap and started listening to this. My energy is up there! Grabbed a Les Paul and started singing and wailing. Took a couple of moments for the chills to stop. Great job!
Love that!
Love this song
It's a good one!
I managed to accidentally delete my initial comment instead of editing it, brain fart :(
Luckily I type them out in notes & paste them in so could repost. I did get notification of & see your reply to it Ken, and if I could I would have clicked like on it, beautiful indeed :-)
I love the unplugged version. It's haunting.
How do you relax and release your vocal folds to hit that highest note? My throat tightens and I can't get past "I'll be gone". I have to drop back to lower chest voice.

I had forgotten how good a singer Morten is. Also, when I commented my favorite singers last week I forgot to put Ken Tamplin.
Haha! Thanks!
You have one of the best channels on you tube..thanks
Appreciate that!
Awesome Mr Ken 👏
Thanks for the analysis. I actually learned from an interview with Morton that you need to take chances when you sing and so just see where each song will take your own unique voice. I can't sing but his advice gave me the confidence to learn an acoustic version. So, I do not mind the sound of my own voice when I sing it. To me, Morton Harket is the most beautiful and angelic voice found in all of pop music.
Interesting! Rock on!
I was an 80s kid and although I wasn’t a fan of A-HA he has a beautiful voice that I’m just now realizing.
I’d love to hear you analyze Phil Anselmo doing Cemetery Gates. His voice goes from so smooth and sexy to gritty so seamlessly.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great videos Ken. You’re attracting a wide audience of music lovers with this series not just singers. I’ve learn a ton about fx, mics, vocal styles and the fact these gods of music are humans with faults just like rest of us. You Rock✌️
So do you!
Yes I was also thinking M.Jackson the similarities... :) They have the same high voice etc....and popping...
Rock on!
I love this guy! Thank you Ken!
My pleasure!
I worked this song a while back, time to refresh!
Go for it, John!
Ooh...adore this song...just sang it the other day...might upload my cover of it...love you, dear Ken...💗💗💗

Does he span four octaves in the chorus from the initial “take” to the final “two”? My ear isn’t the best but it seems like he might.

Thank you too!
The USA. 🇺🇸 PEOPLE ARE COOL AND SO FRIENDLY !
Rock on!
Love this series. Thanks Ken!
Happy to hear that, Norm!
You are too cute I can't stand it. These videos always make me smile, keep making them and keep helping people realize their potential
You are so kind!
Great video! Love this song and how you explained it all.
Amazing analysis again Ken! great job!! thanks!!! also love his voice on "hunting high and low" where he displays what i think is great combo of feeling and technique. Cheers!!
Thanks for listening.
Hello there, morten is one of my favourite singers. His voice is amazing and powerful. You gave me an interesting insight of his voice. Can you please do Marian Gold from Alphaville? Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!

My pleasure, Peter!
If I remember right, Morten Harket learned to sing in a choir He was a part of the Norwegian choir Sølvguttene in his youth. The choir has a bit of fame in Norway since they're always officially singing the holidays in on TV and have been since forever.
Thank you!
Actually Morten never was a part of Sølvguttene. I just checked an old TV-program where he said so. Although he sang with the choir at least once on Norwegian Television, NRK. If I remember right, he sang with a Christian choir as a young boy.
Morten Harket great control. Who’d of thought...🤔
Pretty cool! 😎
Thanks Ken!👍🏼
Very Cool!
Listen Morten Harket singing live, Wind of change with Scorpions in 2013....
