Lita is so right I worked in hotel maintenance, people would piss on the beds and all sorts of disgusting things. Never check the mattress as you probably wouldn't sleep on it if you did. The term for a room with bed bugs was a "BB" room so guests wouldn't know what you were talking about.
Robert - speaking of cleaning stuff out - check your EGR sometime at home and blow it out really good. We’ve blown out my truck several times it’s amazing how dirty they get. As the mechanic says: these modern diesels just breathe their own farts all day everyday.
Nice video… Best part of doing the rebuild for the first time, is that every time going forward is NOT the first time. Order up another rebuild kit to have on hand!!!
I like to keep the sleeper cold at night also. I'll run the APU while I'm cooking, then leave it off overnight until I get too cold. Running it for an hour or two in the morning to heat the cab, warm up the engine coolant and charge the batteries. If I'm in a noisy truckstop, it's worth keeping the APU running all night to cover up the noise. Hearing the sound of someone's brakes on and off makes you worry are they struggling to back in next to you. And then there's the truck next to you with it's air governor popping off every few minutes ALL NIGHT LONG...
Holy Moly!!!! What would that big plate of grub cost you at a truck stop?? 15 or 18 bucks?? What a great looking supper. If you do get some time at home, and since you now know how to take apart that heater, I would take it apart and with some brushes and lots of brake parts cleaner, I would get that rascal super clean. Remember to clean out the exhaust pipe. This retired old driver (1974 to 2004), loves your videos. Thank you for taking the time and effort. I pulled a reefer for 7 years, dry van for 5 years and a flatbed for 18 years. Thanks again. Be as safe as you can. Hug the girls for me. I am, retired ol ron.
Hello Lita and Robert. Congratulations on the fix! For what you did, it could have easily cost $700.00. It looked like the heater unit could use some DEF and a Re-Gen, LMFAO. It was probably never cleaned. The exhaust tube you showed that was broken looks a lot like flexible conduit. Have good days and see you when you come through my town.
Every month you have to clean those heaters by running them on the highest temp for a bit of a period of time and making sure the heater goes through the complete shut down phase. They do not burn fuel completely on lowest temp and clog up.
YES! I've heard this too and after opening it to rebuild that totally makes sense. The diesel heater equivalent of take it down the road and floor it to "burn out the carbon"--in this case literally.
When the Espar is working correctly, they DEFINITELY do not smoke. Pretty sure that thing you said you didn't know what it was is the tool used to push the screen into the hole. They call to rebuild that once a year--I think they mean mostly replace the screen. Mine wasn't working so I replaced the screen, kept the glow plug, but when I opened it my burn chamber didn't look as bad as yours, but the heat exchanger had been damaged by some monkey technician, so I had to order that and replace it too. I'm guessing the rebuild interval depends on how much you use it and how much trash is in the fuel you buy. FYI: there is also a screen in the fuel pump that probably needs to be changed. I ordered mine but didn't change it because the pump was too hard to get to, but I will replace it soon.
Sure looked like Lita killed it on that dinner for sure ! Glad you got the bunk heater fixed , I'm sure others will mention it but you do have to run them on high to help burn the soot out ,I had one in our truck camper and I would run it on high first thing in the morning ,then turn it down . I really enjoy seeing what goes on during the down time . Stay safe out there
Make sure you run that heater a full cycle every month even in the summer or it will gum up and screw up every time. Love the content and adventures yall have.
A friend of my had to shut his heater off and let it stop running before starting his truck and that seemed to help when he had the same problem as you.
Robert I admire how you take the time to fix things yourself instead of paying to have it done which would mean more down time. You guys define old school trucking where you fix things yourself so you can stay on the road trucking because time is money.
Weather u do a 8-2 or a 7-3 the bigger half of the break is in the sleeper and usually the smaller have is done at a shipper or receiver off duty to plus your 14 hour clock so when u take your sleeping break u only have to do 8 hours or 7 hours in the sleep er to complete the break
If you go to the manufacturers website, they tell you to run that heater once a month even in the summer for about a half hour on high and that’ll burn carbon out
I do not remember ever passing through Hanson, KY before, but I must have back in the mid-1980's on my way from Evansville, IN to Madisonville, KY to visit friends. There was probably little to no businesses back at that time. I am sure that there was no Love's or Walmart back then. Everyone had to go to Madisonville for excitement, etc. You might be able to get a load out of Evansville, IN. They produce (or did) millions of pounds of plastic pipe at Crestline Plastics Company. It all ships out on flatbed trailers. Keep up the great work!!! You are so much happier now that Lita and the dogs can travel with you in the KW. Been watching since the first video using the Ford Superduty!!! BTW, the Superduty trucks are manufactured in Louisville, KY.
Great video as usual. Walmart sells great salads. You can buy one for around 5 dollars and it's big enough to feed the two of you. I buy there stuffed pork chops that come two to a pack and use the air fryer. You guys are killing it. Keep up the hard work. Prayers ❤.
If it’s building carbon like that it means it’s not getting good intake or exhaust. Take your leaf blower and blow it backwards and see if that doesn’t clean it out.
I hit Kwik Trip today. 9 piece chicken tenders. All white meat, decent size $9.45. Cut up chunk into salad w/ cottage cheese…. It’s pretty good. Almost no spices. But I. Have those. No bones.
One thing I have done to lessen the buildup of carbon in that espar heater is turn the heat all the way up and run it like that for about 10 to 15 minutes and it will help heat up enough to burn off most of the carbon
GoodMorning from Italy, I've got similar diesel heater in my mini RV/,Van (poessl Campster) myne it's a Webasto. Anyway, funcional logic is that, upon start command: 1 prewash of the Combustion Chamber= fan turn on and wash with air 4/5 times the volume of the CC 2 fuel peristaltic pump kicks in and bring diesel, once the glove plug is hot enough to ignite diesel 3 flame scanner checks for actual flame took place In these steps inner fan is idle, low rpm running 4 IF flame scanner actually detect combustion running OK, heater fuel is speed up to set point: EXACTLY and ONLY in this step the inner hot air fan is speeding up, boosting the hot/ warm air into your semi. That's why it took a bit [say 45-120 seconds] to obtain warm air into the semi. All that procedure is for safety reason: imagine if the combustion won't take place, you will flood your bunk with totally unproperly burnt air with some CO gasses= potentially slowly poisoning yourselves. Same goes for shut-off: upon your command, the heater burner will completely combust all the liquid diesel had been brought to the CC and then a POST wash of the CC will took place: the air fan will flow 3-5 times the volume to ensure that ALL the combustion gasses will be displaced and washed with CLEAN outside air😅

To prevent the carbon from building up, you have to run it on high for 5 minutes before you turn it off. It burns it all off. Never just turn it off after you have been running it on low.
Northern Kentucky and Southern iN is a great area for freight going everywhere if you can't find anything in the general area then the whole country is bad.
The brothers that own kwik trips in Wisconsin invested a bunch of money into a large dairy corporation that also owns feed lots for cattle so all the dairy and meat products from those gas stations are grown and produce locally stations
Correct, they invested in a large multi site dairy corporation and all the milk from 1 of the 7 large dairy farms send their milk there to get processed and packaged for sale at their own outlets
Lita does some damn good work making food in the truck.
It's always satisfying when your able to make a real meal in a cab and relax. Makes the job totally worth it.
Hello you 2, I bet Lita saved you guys 50 bucks on Dinner, that Food looked so good. Be Safe and May the Lord Bless Y'all.
That plastic thing is for pushing the new screen down in to the hole and locating it properly 👏
Lita is right about hotels being dirty . I got bed bugs from one

Have a good one, thanks for sharing
Dinner looked great
Aluminum tape will do what you need on the exhaust pipe.
Lita is an awesome chef. I also air fried our pork chops for dinner. Turned out really good. Thanks for the idea.
It was probably me that told you that you needed to rebuild that.
I pray for you and your crew every night.

never pulled a reefer but back in the day i sure smoked a ton of it lol
we used to wrap soda cans around our muffler pipe to seal a leak or 2
Make sure the air bleed by the glow plug is open. When you run the heater make sure it runs for a good 30mins before it shuts off

A small ceramic heater run off of the inverter should keep y'all toasty without all of the hassle.
I can feel it in my bones when you drop, even know I am editing and up against a deadline, I have to stop and watch dude
A little oil filled heater from home depot or Walmart works great and won't catch anything on fire if something falls on it
A friend of my had to shut his heater off and let it stop running before starting his truck and that seemed to help when he had the same problem as you.
I'm a Milwaukee guy, but, I think Kobalt is just fine.

If you do not have enough voltage , go into the glow plugit will be hot enough to burn a diesel fuel .
Well you should drop a short showing the Espar rebuild. You will get many hits.
Might want to check the air intake on your bunk heater. If it is smoking it is getting fuel, but it isn't burning it all.
That dinner looks great, maikng me hungry!

Check: - Exhaust pipe blocked.
- Combustion air intake blocked.
- Exhaust entering combustion air intake

- Short cycling, rapid on/off operation.
- Fuel system.
- Fuel metering pump position and quantity.

Aluminum tape like HVAC stuff from Lowe's will fix that exhaust pipe break. NOT duct tape..
this was aluminum tape
Motorcycle exhaust tape
To prevent the carbon from building up, you have to run it on high for 5 minutes before you turn it off. It burns it all off. Never just turn it off after you have been running it on low.
Autozone has exhaust tape less than $10. Wrap the exhaust line and the tape will harden when it gets hot.
Hose clamps on the can might have been better.
Northern Kentucky and Southern iN is a great area for freight going everywhere if you can't find anything in the general area then the whole country is bad.
Don't forget to replace that exhaust pipe....it's probably carboned up just as bad as the rest of it.....and it's not very safe with the patch job.
That heater probably not been serviced in some time. That heater needs to be run on high once a month for 20 to 30 minutes even in summer
