The backing band is as star-laden as the soloist...the legendary Jim Johnstone, Ian Powrie and Billy Thom [all, alas R.I.P]] unassuming but both towering talents! [the bit of the Benny Hill theme at 5'30" is quite amusing..seems to have gone unnoticed with the audience!]
Incidentally,I was reliably informed that Robert is Playiin His Fathers(Bill Black of Stanley)Hohner Gola. Robert and Jim Johnstone travelled up to Aberdeen together for this Concert,They looked in at Stanley whilst en route and Robert Collected The accordion from there. The same Gola has been utilised on Bill Black Broadcasts with 2nd Box Players Neil Caul and Mark Cummine I Believe using itn on their Solo spots.
Has anyone noticed something about this show and those before by Andy Stewart, everyone seems happy and enjoying themselves? This I find a rare thing these days. Some of this needs to return to improve the morale of the British public to rejuvenate this state of happiness. I think the situation today is causing the deterioration of mental health that was hardly heard of. A friend of mine down the road from me, said there is an overwhelming obsession with ill health and trying to retrieve the opposite. Nobody talked about it other than amongst themselves in their families when they gathered together when someone might have said, Aunty Mo or whatever had a turn the other day or has bronchitis. Everyone just got on with their lives. What on earth has happened, certainly so far, not for the better. In fact that is just what my neighbour said.
The jig is the Blackthorn Stuck,Going into reel time at the end then into the strathspey The Laird of Dumblair,Then into the reel Sean MCGuire by Bert Murray.
Andy's Party was Andy Stewart's last recorded live performance in 1993, just a few months before he died.
By far the best playing I have ever heard by all musicians
