Its incredible how some folk today belittle this wonderful old style of traditional enjoyment. It brings back incredible memories for me of a time when life seemed so much simpler - and more sincere.
I always remember watching this withy parents. My father was Scottish and my mother was Irish! So I've got some truly wonderful heritage especially the music! Aye! X😁🏴🇨🇮🙋
A wonderful combination of the old celtic clans. With Irish and Scottish ancestry you should be a wonderful singer AND an excellent fighter in time of need.
We're celebrating 2024 properly now in AUTHENTIC manner with this wee gem I need to after watching the offerings on the main stations.😢 Peeling back the years.
When my family left Ireland for work in England . There was no connection from RTE Television to BBC . So this lovely programme from Scotland was our only connection on the television to Celtic culture . Thank you White Heather club . Some of the Songs and many of the dances were part of Irish tradition too.
Acchhh, swing yer kilt, a' the same! WHEE-YOOCCHHH! I watched it too as a wee lassie in Glasgow. I'm 70, now, and live in England, but I adore and miss Scotland, and my ain folk xx @@pikede1
Bloody hell my mother used to watch this all the time she was born in Glasgow i used to dance around the living room with my mother absolutely brilliant ❤️
Brilliant, talented people, one and all - singers, musicians, accompanists, dancers. Such a pity that Scotland has turned its back on this type of entertainment. We certainly haven't found anything to replace it. Like Ireland, we should be proud of our heritage and encourage it. Scots only become traditionalists when they move abroad. Visitors love this type of show, but its almost impossible to find anythere these days because theatres etc take their lead from TV and if it isn't there then it isn't anywhere. Isobel James is the only prominent name on this who is still with us.
I am of Irish heritage and yes we kept our culture . But WOKE is ruining for us also. Scots are Celts too . We are losing our culture to something that is not us . I am not racist . But WOKE forgets us .
I think that’s a bit unfair on the many great Scottish bands who’ve followed over the years, like Capercaillie, the Macalmans, Dougie Maclean, Phil Cunningham and, much more recently the likes of Skipinnish and Manran. And the BBC has been instrumental in strengthening Scottish music - there’s a wealth of it on BBC Alba, in particular. Shetland and Orkney have produced some fantastic music from bands like Fiddler’s Bid and the Wrigley Sisters. There is far more variety in style than ever before. And yes, I was 10 when this was transmitted, and we watched it every week; but we certainly haven’t turned our backs on Scottish music. Far from it.
BBC Scotland and Alba do a marvellous job of keeping the Scottish traditional heritage alive.I'm English myself but I must have some Celtic genes in my background somewhere as I always feel a great affinity with Celtic culture. I do feel that the media don't do as much for the English folk hertage.
@@spmoran4703 I’ve no idea what relevance ‘woke’ has to any of this. ‘Woke’, if it means anything at all, which is doubtful, appears to be a pejorative term attacking those who respect others’ customs, beliefs and cultures. In 70 or so years, I don’t think there’s ever been a time when more effort has gone into promoting a diversity of Scottish culture, including Gaelic and the quite different heritages of Orkney and Shetland, and the BBC has played a huge part in that.
Don’t know what to say this amazing man, who my mom& dad respected, but I let them down, became they are today my idols, my childhood xmas memories, god bless 🥰🥰🥰🥰💕
We were talking about Andy Stewart the other day and bless me here he is! Fabulous memories! All innocent and above board of course! Thanks for posting this!
Didn’t he used have a program that saw the new year in - a Hogmanay. As others have said, childhood memories flooding back of Country Dancing at Junior school. Sigh!
If only I had a time machine !! A time of frugality, but respect and decent standards. If you could put butter on both sides of your Scotch plain bread piece with a spoonful of treacle, you knew you were well off.
Hi, the show is edition #68 from October 1960. Unfortunately, no video recordings from 1963 exist, in fact no video recordings of The White Heather Club exist after May 1961.
It’s a pity that there is now so little of our own culture show on TV that very few young people know a British folk song, folk dance or any other tradition.
I think Billy Connolly had a lot to assassinate this sort of show he used to take the micky out of the choclate Box image of Scotland which i think is a shame it has its place
My secretary was one of the female dancers. She made all her own clothes. Years after working with her we met either side of a glass panel at an airport with no way to talk. I was departures & she was arrivals. Anyway I'm off back to see if I can pick her out in the video.
I don’t know for certain, but I would be surprised if any existed in STV’s archive. Scotch Corner was shown at lunchtime and sometimes repeated the same day as part of “tea-time” TV. They were then most probably wiped after these transmissions.
I must have been born in the wrong generation. My contemporaries prefer Duran Duran, Boy George, Madonna, the Pet Shop Boys, or Michael Jackson, but I've always much preferred this!
This is so much better than the modern rubbish. Thankfully born in 1951 this was one of my favourite programmes as a child and later. When Andy Stewart died the true traditional Hogmanay died along with him. 🏴 😢
And this is still excellent - unlike the abysmal BBC Scotland offering for 2025, the laughable STV shambles (Kelly phoning it in) why do BBC Scotland stop Scots songs and entertainers singing them ? Mind you their dire Burns night offerings (none of the ones ordinary people know) merely the same poor singers again.
I'd rather eat foot stuffed in a sheep's stomach than a pig's rectum - which is what sausages are made from. Of course, both foods migrated over to artificial alternatives decades ago.
And now at New Year we have bands that sound Irish -screeching women singers- BBC Scotland seem to be embarrassed with this normal entertainment - the only time they show clips of this is on shows hosted by smug, talentless "comedians" - that are as funny as root canal work !
Used to be on every New Year’s Eve as well as Friday nights. Great voices and choreography.
March no more soldier laddie always had my granny in tears.
Me, too, right now.
Greetings fae the Scottish Highlands. ❤

Peeling back the years.
The late great Andy Stewart. Hogmanay on TV has never been the same since he passed away. A tremendous entertainer both on TV and live on stage.
I remember this show in my childhood days with Andy Stewart.

Me too!
And me
I watched as a child too, and then tried to dance just like them. I'm 73...no chance now. 😂

We watched with our grandparents in Edinburgh. Wonderful days!
Bloody hell my mother used to watch this all the time she was born in Glasgow i used to dance around the living room with my mother absolutely brilliant ❤️
As a child I loved watching Andy Stewart at New Year's Eve such happy memories 😊
Great to see again our talented people... brilliant shows. Could do with some more these days to brighten up our lives!!
Grand Scottish entertainment. Cheers for uploading.
Ah Ian Powrie, brilliant player and a character to boot. Fond memories of him.
What joyous television. Today's so-called entertainment TV producers would do well to watch this.

Wonderful, just wonderful. If only we could go back....!
It was always the highlight of the week, I think I have seen every episode that there was.
So many memories, ill take ths high road, my dad loved this programme
Love it I used to remember their New Year’s Eve celebrations ( till the whiskeys took over lol)this entertainment is sadly missed
Fantastic, Andy Stewart a true Scottish Soldier 👏
And Andy was brilliant. What a shame he died sp relatively young. X
I used to love this progamme
I was ten uears old when this particular episode went out . I can remember it well.
Thank you. These programmes were wonderful x
Every week, my grandad would watch the dancers and say “Aye, nae rheumatism there! Grand!”
For all these very old Scots!!
The dancers of today canot even do a proper Highland Fling. This program is wonderful. Sang along with most of the songs.
I was 7 at the time but it was must watch in our household.
I can guarantee each of the lady dancers is wearing a paper nylon petticoat under their skirts. The memories...
I just loved it. I remember going to the old STV studios where they filmed it.
I watched Andy Stewart in the 1960s I like The Scottish Soldier among other songs Auld Lang Syne to 🏴
Didn’t he used have a program that saw the new year in - a Hogmanay.

Happy days!
Love it
Those were the days
If only I had a time machine !!

Copyright date is 1963, unless from a later showing...
Hi, the show is edition #68 from October 1960. Unfortunately, no video recordings from 1963 exist, in fact no video recordings of The White Heather Club exist after May 1961.
I remember when he brought this show to Canada and travelled around doing shows.
I like that they film the actual dance steps, rather than focussing on plastic fake grins.
... or the audience!
Go Andy, up Scots!!
It’s a pity that there is now so little of our own culture show on TV that very few young people know a British folk song, folk dance or any other tradition.
Memories of ma hame toon of Edinburgh

Sigh, I wish I could poussette as neatly as that, and had strong enough ankles for the Highland steps. 🙂
Do you have any editions of Scotch Corner from 1972 to 74...
I don’t know for certain, but I would be surprised if any existed in STV’s archive. Scotch Corner was shown at lunchtime and sometimes repeated the same day as part of “tea-time” TV. They were then most probably wiped after these transmissions.
I never knew Lord Snowden could dance so well !!
I must have been born in the wrong generation. My contemporaries prefer Duran Duran, Boy George, Madonna, the Pet Shop Boys, or Michael Jackson, but I've always much preferred this!
Hope you're having a good time listening
Alright
me too, 'salange avar' from Vancouver!
This is so much better than the modern rubbish. Thankfully born in 1951 this was one of my favourite programmes as a child and later. When Andy Stewart died the true traditional Hogmanay died along with him. 🏴 😢
Thought they were great

Crivens!
Never underestimate a man who'll eat a sheep's stomach and wear a dress.

BBC Scotland once more surrendered to their paymasters ,the shows now are fucking rubbish.
Powrie and Joe gordon s lot ------------brill Could live without Stewart
