haha im dying, you dont know how many times i've rewatched your old f4s videos until deciding to buy it 3 hours ago. But thanks for uploading an update
Your hmd doesn't lock those guys bcoz f4s and f4j automatically turns hmd hdn pd instead of normal hmd pd, so you have to manually switch it almost every time the same way (same keybind) as you switch from src to src pd hdn, then it works in all aspects - ie in that situation with f104. As you see from the clip, same with the acq mode, it also 99prc of the time automatically turns the hdn submode.
It chooses the same mode as your radar used when you turned on your HMD/ACM, if your radar was in SRC mode - HMD/ACM will also use SRC mode when you turn it on, if your radar was in PD velocity HDN mode then HMD/ACM will also be on the same mode
Regarding the comment about always being a little too late to get a kill. That seems to be a pretty consistent issue in ARB, where you do everything right but the enemies just die so quickly you end up with no kills. Quite frankly in ARB I think players are almost encouraged to ABSOLUTELY despise their teammates, not just due to competition for kills but also base bombing among bombers.
The F4S was a great plane in air simulator matches like one year ago when I was still playing. It was uptiered all the time, but overall a fun and versatile plane. The biggest problem: it was always matched against more modern aircraft with better radars. The F4S rwr DOESN'T DETECT PD RADAR PINGS AND LOCKS. It's PDV mode doesn't have IFF, SRC mode is not strong. The good: Bombing computer (or rather cumpoter as it is implemented in this game). Massive arsenal: you could destroy bases, carriers, airfields, and the way back you could still fight with a full set of missiles. And If you successfully learned to use the radar (all the markings on it, like the missile range... good thing they teach you this... ), the missiles were surprisingly useful.
because of you I was able to fast track US air in 4+ months. now I am at top tier with my f15c crying because Stock grinding is soo difficult against Fox 3s...... totally worth it, still having fun
Running 5 sparrows 2 sidewinders is based. That shot around 9:00 where you couldn’t get HMD PD to lock I think regular ACM would have worked. The HMD just in general seems more finicky but getting kills off boresight is still always awesome when it comes together…
Thanks for this content video. It's helped me lot to understand how to us F-4S with radar missile. I hope you could upload more videos like this. I hope you could post also how to use the F-4EJ ADTW Premium of Japan properly.
While the F4S flight model is far outclassed by many other fighters it faces, and while it faces some BVR missiles, with some practice you can make it work even in full uptiers, which it faces often. Don't set your expectations too high at the beginning; I mean, it is a Vietnam War era fighter taking on F14s, F15s, Mig 29s, SU27s and Gripens in full uptiers. When it is at its own battle rating or at a full downtier, it can be an absolute monster. I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually enjoy flying the F4S. I haven't played it lot lately, but a month or so ago I had a 9 kill game in a full uptier on Air RB, my best so far in the F4S.
Dude same. I use the f4j which I think is the same besides HMD. Ppl write off this plane because it doesn't work in a lot of play styles. But if u use it right it's really good. I had a full up tier yesterday and got 6 kills with it.
Another thing is that people don't expect much when they see an F-4S. The average pilot of that thing is so braindead that whenever people run into a competent pilot flying it, they get jumpscared.
@@lunarcultist6214 Tbh you cant really do much in a fantom. It has to be played in very specific way, with team support, or else it is toasted with even good pilot. Sure, that thing is one of the best at low speed, but you are extremely easy to kill on low speed too. And it being slow means that you cant even run from fights you cant win (Like Mig23 or F-104).
@@alexturnbackthearmy1907 I agree with you that the F4S' effectiveness in a match can be limited due to enemy aircraft types and teammates, but you are saying you can't win dogfights against a MiG-23 or F-104? In a 1v1, there is no way you should need to run from a Mig-23 or an F-104, which can outrun you eventually in a straight line. The F4S is far more maneuverable in a dogfight than either of those airframes (especially with the recent MiG-23 flight model nerf), and it should be easy to get guns on them even within just a couple turns or loops.
9:00 thats true, and thats why, in some situations, I switch to ACM, and it's usually lock the guy I want. Especially when you are heading to the guy (like in this situation 9:26). AIM-7s are pretty good, when you know when to use it - I really like their range and maneuverability - but it usually depends also on a skill of your enemy :P and sometimes they behave guffy... but i recommend that aircraft, its good grinder and it's versatile ;) you can use it as a CAS and bases killer (but don't recommend that).
I bought it a week before the BR change, god it was so good at 11.3, borderline OP, very fun to fly. At 12.0 its a extreme struggle especially from the F14 Oppression. Its crazy that a premium like it is so awful to play. I feel like it would be fine at 11.7 but really its not that this plane is bad at 12.0 really, its the simple fact that the F14 needs to go way up because its ruining not just this plane but every plane 11.7 and up.
I made the mistake of getting the UK Phantom because I thought it would help me grind. Turns out the Premium MiG-21S (R13-300) was more my speed and I enjoy it very much. I run 3 R-3Rs and 1 R-3S.
Awesome timing for this video, bought the phantom and your decal this thursday and while i have experience upto the mig21bis and AJ37 in the swedish TT, this 12.0 MM is quite the jump for me. I have been getting bad PL these couple of days when i try to multipath and end up slamming into the ground, but have learned a lot of the quirks of this plane. My question is, I always maintain multipath height and go towards the left and then go across the map towards the right, picking off targets in the headon. But, they always notch me because they are engaged with my friendlies. I try to stay behind and pick off targets, but most of my matches are with ARH missile spam which means one team is completely wiped out before I get a radar lock or my missile reaches them. What should I do better?
Hey defyn I’ve been watching your beginner guides and really improving but I’m struggling to like work out what planes are good and how to play them, please consider doing nation air tree guides and recommended planes and planes to avoid
If the F-4S is considered bad then no wonder spading the F-4J was such a hellish task for me it's basically the F-4S but it gets slightly worse sidewinders and it can't turn 💀
I actually really like the F4s playstyle, kind of a sniper plane stay at range and choose your fights.most success with the 7f are at either 9km or 6 km.the only thing keeping you down are your low lvl teammates other than that absolutely love it.

Another comment for the algorithm. My job is done. It's the least I can do after you gave important educational content that made me start getting kills and wins consistently
hi defyn, I picked up the f4s on more than half off during the sale and have played about 15 games in it being rather unsuccessful. this video taught me the basic radar mechanics of it but i do still have a few questions. being relatively new to ttarb, I believed I should hug the deck for the beginning of the game, this doesn't seem to be the case in your video, should I climb Aswell? also, what should I look for in a lock. I know what makes a strong lock. but who should I shoot my missiles at? what gameplay behaviours can be seen as them not paying attention to me and therefor my missile?
Couple of additions I didn't hear in the video for anyone looking for additional tips: 1. The HMS can be a bit finicky as Defyn mentioned, ACM much less so in my experience but you need to note that in SRC PDV HDN mode (which you should be using 95% of the time in this plane) it struggles to lock enemies not flying more or less toward you. If they're flying away or notching, you need to switch the HMS/ACM into its alternate mode by hitting the same button you hit to get into SRC PDV HDN *while in HMS/ACM*, then you'll be more able to lock enemies not flying at you, but your radar will be more susceptible to chaff like this, so use it judiciously 2. It's definitely possible to use the Sparrows at longer ranges as shown a couple times in the video, but it's not recommended in my experience, partly because they don't loft themselves and partly because that's a great way to be "just a bit too late" to get the kill. Optimal range for them in a head-on shot is usually around 3-10km. 3. While the gunpod for the F-4S isn't amazing, it's perfectly serviceable and considering that this thing isn't a dogfighter to begin with, it won't really affect your flight performance in any noticeable way to leave it. Therefore, ALWAYS bring the gunpod. While it's preferable to avoid dogfights most of the time in this, you will inevitably find yourself sucked into one sometimes, and not having an option to even try fighting back at that range is frankly foolish. Also if your team cleans house too fast, you can always strafe a couple ground targets to get a least a bit of RP.
@gandalfdafavela1044 I keep air belts in it since I usually don't bother with ground pounding unless there's really nobody around for me to fight. I also prefer to keep both vertical and horizontal convergence turned off for this and most other high tier jets, since the gun is usually mounted close enough to the centerline. I've had some experiences trying to use the radar gunsight with convergence turned on and it seemed to cause the gunsight some issues, haven't had the issues with it since turning convergence off in high tier (although I'm not 100% sure the two are related, could just be a coincidence)
1:20 I don't get the proper reference because I haven't gotten too much brainrot, so here's the lyrics from Everybody Knows by Sigrid: Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich That's how it goes Everybody knows Everybody knows that the boat is leaking Everybody knows that the captain lied Everybody got this broken feeling Like their father or their dog just died Everybody talking to their pockets Everybody wants a box of chocolates And a long-stem rose Everybody knows Everybody knows that you love me baby Everybody knows that you really do Everybody knows that you've been faithful Oh, give or take a night or two Everybody knows you've been discreet But there were so many people you just had to meet Without your clothes Everybody knows Everybody knows, everybody knows That's how it goes Everybody knows Everybody knows, everybody knows That's how it goes Everybody knows And everybody knows that it's now or never Everybody knows that it's me or you And everybody knows that you live forever When you've done a line or two Everybody knows the deal is rotten Old Black Joe's still picking cotton For your ribbons and bows And everybody knows And everybody knows that the Plague is coming Everybody knows that it's moving fast Everybody knows that the naked man and woman Are just a shining artifact of the past Everybody knows the scene is dead But there's gonna be a meter on your bed That will disclose What everybody knows And everybody knows that you're in trouble Everybody knows what you've been through From the bloody cross on top of Calvary To the beach of Malibu Everybody knows it's coming apart Take one last look at this Sacred Heart Before it blows Everybody knows
Thanks for this, my frustration in the F4S isn’t purely a skill issue it seems which makes me feel a little better! Just need to commit the radar stuff to muscle memory and stay out of the fur balls and I might have a chance! Still kind of a fun plane to fly even if I am still in free kill mode for the other team.
No you want to be on the fur balls with this plane. You just multipath while firing missiles at people fly towards you. Trying to fly high and do some BVR then diving works sometimes but multipathing is more consistent. Just don't try and dogfight in the fur ball. You need to boom and zoom
@ thanks, will try that approach. Radar stuff is new to me so that is taking some getting used to. Still a bit new at lvl 52, I blame my son for drawing me into this addiction. 🤦🏻♂️
@@VowellVentures Just be careful with Mig23, that thing is BVR monster. And dont try turning with an enemy unless there is no enemies nearby. Fantom is actually very decent at low speeds that it can drag almost anything into...if you survive long enough.
It was fun when it came out even though the radar was janky. Now I get slapped from every side almost before I can react and the radar is marginally better with automatic tracking mode swaping but still almost everyone knows how to break your lock before a hit can be made.
9:38 this clip really is just the pure distillation of why I hate the 12.0 bracket so much specifically as a US air main. Your radar missiles have good range but they have dreadfully slow acceleration compared to your competition, nor do they have the maneuverability to not simply be dodged with a barrel roll. This leaves higher flying targets as your only consistent pickings, which not many experienced players are doing at that BR (at least when WVR kicks off) because everyone worth their salt is hugging the deck for multipathing. You lose head-ons to planes with faster missiles, you get kills stolen by people who only started thinking five seconds ago and decided to press space with their missile that flies at mach f*ck. 11.0? Pretty good. 13.0? At least you've got dripped-out planes. 12.0? Welcome to Struggle City, population: you.
0:01 how'd you know that def? I've been playing this thing a bit more aggressively and honestly it's been working for me (even tho i am a mediocre player at best) sometimes it just doesn't work out tho just as you said. Been enjoying it so far the aim-7F work pretty well i've found i have more success with them than something like the R-24R, fighting R-27ER/ET's and Aim-54/fakours is kinda annoying tho.
Saw someone streaming in this thing for like over an hour, and every single match, he'd fly right into radar missiles, popping flares. At least choose chaff instead lol, even though chaff won't do much without defending properly.
Hey Defyn, would love for you to try out Scramble: Battle of Britain to show us good dogfighting technique in a more slow paced setting via the turnbased dogfights they have in that game.
I just got the F-15A, and I must admit, there are still so many of these phantoms there. Anybody has any advice on how to play the eagle? Because so far it's been quite a struggle, especially stock.
at the enemy at 8:50-9:05 where you complained about the radar set. you were using PD instead of Scan for enemies that GC will not affect (anyone you're pitching your nose up to hit and your below them) use scan for head-on and things that are low to the ground use PDV HDN or PDV that was a person error not plane error.
What your opinion on turning air realistic into air simulator with the same maps, objectives and a respawn much like the one from either ground realistic or air simulator? The 3rd perspective remains.
as a pro gamer F-4S player, bring 4 aim 9h's, they are stupidly good at this BR and along with the F-4S's insane nose authority (yes you will be drifting in the air but whatever) its a free 2-3 kills, then just use your HMD in PD mode on enemies going head on with you, launch at 4-5km, then crank because your life depends upon it. thats another 2-3 free kills. then all you do is run away, go land and do it again.
You know,I've been TK'd by F4s,F5s and F14s. As well as an F111. But the premium jets TK the most. Whenever I see F4 on my RWR I immediately move becuase I dont trust them.
Honestly I feel like the 4S is a good plane at 12.0. I really wouldn't call it overtiered as it's the best 12.0 plane alongside the Tornado F3 now. (which got a usable flight model now). I can't see either of those planes going lower BR. FGR2 and FG1 with the 7E2 should go to 11.7 however. The problem is more the compression above the 4S. M2000 at 12.3 is stupid, F16 and other way stronger airframe shouldn't meet Phantoms.

Bought the F4J(UK) a year ago and I absolutely love it! This Christmas, I’ll be getting the 4S with extra premium time so I can grind the US Air tree…. That means starting all over again…. Hope the F-14(s) are still good by the time I reach them in the spring.
If you loved the F-4JUNK you're gonna love the F-4Superior.. it's literally better in every way
thank you defyn, i was hoping you would make a video on this since i just got it yesterday and your last video on it was a while back. love your sense of humor and skill

haha im dying, you dont know how many times i've rewatched your old f4s videos until deciding to buy it 3 hours ago.
Its very fun slapping these new jet players out the air
all the issues defyn came across in the video perfectly sums up missile tier.
because of you I was able to fast track US air in 4+ months. now I am at top tier with my f15c crying because Stock grinding is soo difficult against Fox 3s...... totally worth it, still having fun

Defyn can we get a keybinds video? Or you already did an updated one?

Hello defyn its defyn and today we will be doing defyn
1:20 we got Defyn making a Thick of it joke befopre GTA 6

Hey defyn I’ve been watching your beginner guides and really improving but I’m struggling to like work out what planes are good and how to play them, please consider doing nation air tree guides and recommended planes and planes to avoid
5:55 that poor missile barely reaching the MiG-23
If the F-4S is considered bad then no wonder spading the F-4J was such a hellish task for me it's basically the F-4S but it gets slightly worse sidewinders and it can't turn 💀
Does it matter if you can turn or not with horrendous speed bleed on fantoms? Its like Mig29/Su-27, you can do one turn and then you can suck.
I actually really like the F4s playstyle, kind of a sniper plane stay at range and choose your fights.most success with the 7f are at either 9km or 6 km.the only thing keeping you down are your low lvl teammates other than that absolutely love it.
Same, or for me atleast, the f4j. It's my most played plane and I just found it very fun.

Let's see what concept that doesn't seem like it would work for props will end up working for props in the video about a premium jet
hi defyn, I picked up the f4s on more than half off during the sale and have played about 15 games in it being rather unsuccessful. this video taught me the basic radar mechanics of it but i do still have a few questions. being relatively new to ttarb, I believed I should hug the deck for the beginning of the game, this doesn't seem to be the case in your video, should I climb Aswell? also, what should I look for in a lock. I know what makes a strong lock. but who should I shoot my missiles at? what gameplay behaviours can be seen as them not paying attention to me and therefor my missile?
Couple of additions I didn't hear in the video for anyone looking for additional tips:
1. The HMS can be a bit finicky as Defyn mentioned, ACM much less so in my experience but you need to note that in SRC PDV HDN mode (which you should be using 95% of the time in this plane) it struggles to lock enemies not flying more or less toward you. If they're flying away or notching, you need to switch the HMS/ACM into its alternate mode by hitting the same button you hit to get into SRC PDV HDN *while in HMS/ACM*, then you'll be more able to lock enemies not flying at you, but your radar will be more susceptible to chaff like this, so use it judiciously
Thx for the tips, btw what type of ammo should i use and do i mess up with convergence or vertical aiming?
@gandalfdafavela1044 I keep air belts in it since I usually don't bother with ground pounding unless there's really nobody around for me to fight. I also prefer to keep both vertical and horizontal convergence turned off for this and most other high tier jets, since the gun is usually mounted close enough to the centerline. I've had some experiences trying to use the radar gunsight with convergence turned on and it seemed to cause the gunsight some issues, haven't had the issues with it since turning convergence off in high tier (although I'm not 100% sure the two are related, could just be a coincidence)
1:20 The way I just frowned ☹
Are you streaming your gameplay live somewhere? Love your content and I crave for more
1:20 I don't get the proper reference because I haven't gotten too much brainrot, so here's the lyrics from Everybody Knows by Sigrid:
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Oh, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
When you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still picking cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows
And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
Everybody knows
Can't belive I was in a game with Defyn and didn't even realize it
Cant wait for Fox 3 premium! Thats what we have all been asking for.....
Fantom is actually very decent at low speeds that it can drag almost anything into...if you survive long enough.
idk why but this vid feels nostalgic to me
I suffered so hard flying the stock F-15A against 13.7. Only AIM-9L's and 2 AIM-7s are trashy at 13.0, at least for me
It was fun when it came out even though the radar was janky. Now I get slapped from every side almost before I can react and the radar is marginally better with automatic tracking mode swaping but still almost everyone knows how to break your lock before a hit can be made.
I bought 3 packs with your code. I regret buying 2 of them, but at least you got your cut 😂
how did you use the code, i'm unnable to do it
hey, in your previous video you said that f4ej ADTW (japan premium phantom) can receive pulse doppler radar, where did you get that information?
Bro thought we wouldn't notice the hidden song💀
I grind the entire tech tree with this, and i got 2.0 K/D tho, play it yesterday and still manage to kill 2-6 each match (so many low level premium)
So glad I bought the f20 instead. If you know how to dogfight and set up rear aspect. That plane catches people off guard
This thing is 10.7 in ground. It’s the best air superiority fighter at the br right now for ground with all the aim 7s it carries.
Hi if you're new you should definitely go and buy an F4S or any high tier premium in the American tree. It will make red side players very happy!
I just got the F-15A, and I must admit, there are still so many of these phantoms there. Anybody has any advice on how to play the eagle? Because so far it's been quite a struggle, especially stock.
I’m still annoyed that I put a talisman on the F4J like a week before they released this. The F4J and F4S are fantastic in sim battles btw
Playing this in sim is actually a blast especially if you know the mig 23 ml weaknesses.
at the enemy at 8:50-9:05 where you complained about the radar set. you were using PD instead of Scan for enemies that GC will not affect (anyone you're pitching your nose up to hit and your below them) use scan for head-on and things that are low to the ground use PDV HDN or PDV that was a person error not plane error.
What your opinion on turning air realistic into air simulator with the same maps, objectives and a respawn much like the one from either ground realistic or air simulator? The 3rd perspective remains.
Wait it just popped up on my for you. Does Defyn own a motorcycle? I can't acces it because it's members only but I am just curious.
Ideal fighter to Ace Combat 8. 65 years of F-4 in 2023.
as a pro gamer F-4S player, bring 4 aim 9h's, they are stupidly good at this BR and along with the F-4S's insane nose authority (yes you will be drifting in the air but whatever) its a free 2-3 kills, then just use your HMD in PD mode on enemies going head on with you, launch at 4-5km, then crank because your life depends upon it. thats another 2-3 free kills. then all you do is run away, go land and do it again.
I have been able to notch missiles and then turn around and fly away from them when they're directly behind me. am I doing it wrong?
question: are there any manual engine controls that I should use on this plane or should i just leave it as is by default?
Playing f4s is like trying to survive at Diddy's mansion. Bad from a defensive standpoint but possible to score in an offensive scenario
bro is not that weatherman who sneaks in song lyrics 💀🙏🙏
but real talk it adds a lot of humor to the video
You know,I've been TK'd by F4s,F5s and F14s. As well as an F111. But the premium jets TK the most. Whenever I see F4 on my RWR I immediately move becuase I dont trust them.
Thoughts on RWR changes ?
This is only air rb which I don't play. How does it perform in air sim? Is it good?
Honestly I feel like the 4S is a good plane at 12.0. I really wouldn't call it overtiered as it's the best 12.0 plane alongside the Tornado F3 now. (which got a usable flight model now). I can't see either of those planes going lower BR. FGR2 and FG1 with the 7E2 should go to 11.7 however.
The problem is more the compression above the 4S. M2000 at 12.3 is stupid, F16 and other way stronger airframe shouldn't meet Phantoms.
