Great idea for a project Gareth. This is another army I’ve always fancied doing, just so colourful and varied. The figures you’ve done so far look great. 🙂
Thanks. I first contemplated building this army over 15 years ago but put it off at that time because I think this is a difficult army for rules to cater for.
Thanks. The skythians are a really interesting people. For a nomadic culture they have left a lot of archaeology in their noble warrior burials and some of the stuff is fabulous. There is also a very detailed written account from Herodotus in Classical Greek times. I really like them, but as a war games army, in my opinion, they never worked properly because the rules didn't know how to treat them. I have come back to them now because I've been looking at Mortem et Gloriam again and I think these rules might make them more playable.
Nice one Gareth....always loved the skythians. Had a Britania Miniatures Skythian army many years ago. The bow hand and bow were lose, so you could glue it into various positions, made them look really irregular...
Thanks. I have in the past thought (briefly) about doing skythians in 28mm and they would look great, you just need a much bigger table than I have and theyt really would test my painting skills to destruction.
There is no known cure, once you get the itch it's already too late. My own madness extends to looking at similar armies a different times of history - well I can tell the difference between a Skythian and an Avar so I couldn't possibly use the same figures for both!
Excellent as always. Can I ask when you decide on a particular "army" to build, do you take into account whether friends/fellow gamers have opponents you can use such against or do you simply go ahead because you like collecting the army? Noted that for your Blenheim and Franco-Prussian War projects you built opposing armies. I have developed the habit of always building at least 2 opposing armies for any period so I can either provide all forces needed for a game or play solitaire. "Tyranny of distance" is a big factor down here in Oz, and sometimes if I'm lucky enough to find someone I can play against with a particular army their figures are based differently, though that isn't such a problem these days with modern rule sets. Anyway, fabulous work as always, and I hear you regarding the cost of Foundry figures (now add postage to Oz on top of that . . . . . . . . . . 😲)! Cheers.
Hi and thank you. Whether I build matching armies, used to depend in part on whether there was anyone with the same interest locally but that is much less a concern these days. I have accepted that my 'niche' projects will require on me to supply both sides and I might have to play solitaire anyway, so I don't ask around now before launching a project. I simply choose armies that interest me, and I like the available figures. In the case of the Skythians I already have contemporary Assyrian and Babylonian armies and could make up an Uratian army if pushed (they are much older figures and they do show their age now). I also know there is a thriving group of MeG Ancients players I can tap into (Covid permitting) if I don't mind ahistorical match ups. My biggest problem is playing space at home - the dining room now doubles as a work-from-home office thanks to Covid and the spare bedroom needs to be usable as a bedroom.
Fantastic painting job with thix Skythian cavalrymen . Bravo !
Thanks - the army is beginning to take shape now.
Lovely work Garth as you may be aware I love ancients and you have done yourself proud, all the best, Garry
Thanks Garry. There is so much variety in the 'Ancient' period and so many good looking miniatures we are spoiled for choice really!

Gladiator Aztecs are very nice figures. Skythians are looking good.
Thanks - I am still tempted by Meso-America.
I must admit, I had never heard of these until this video. Beautiful work on the figures as always my friend.

Excellent work Gareth! The figures look awesome!
Thank you. The army is beginning to come together - still a long way to go though!
Such beautiful work on this cavalry
Very kind - they came out well.
Cracking job on this splendid cavalry, I do like the heavy one...👌👍👍
Thank you. Those War and Empire Skythian nobles are nicely sculpted and take paint well.
Good to see you are well Gareth. Interesting new project which will be an absolute riot of colour on the table.
Hi Paul. I wanted a colourful army and this should give me that! I might go mad in the attempt though!
