AWESOME... Honest people are getting farther and fewer ..... thankyou so much for this video. I just called my chum, who has this 5,9 in his 1988 and has NEVER heard of this problem.
Badge is the man, again. I did the killer dowel pin and water pump on my 1993 Dodge Cummins truck and I got it done in a day also. The internet is your friend here if you haven't done it before.
Hey Good morning from frozen CT! Got 7 deg F this morning. Not much getting done on my projects, but that is great Badge was able to hook you up! God bless'm! I learned a lot! I don't have that version, I have a 2002 on the bus, so have to check more on that! Thank you for sharing on that! You enjoy the climate there! This is great you addressed this when you did, that is great you are "pro-active" to take care of that! God bless! Enjoy the coffee! I subscribed to Badge's new channel! Looks like he is having fun! Keep savoring the moments!
Excellent. You heard about a possible issue, then did preventative maintenance at your convenience rather than have a catastrophic failure. The water pump was a "while you are in there anyway" situation. The water pump probably would make its issue known this summer. Probably near the top of Bad Ash Pass. Or somewhere in a remote mountain range in August. Glad that you found someone knowledgeable and honest.
You are one of the most blessed men on YT. Every time you have a problem you run upon someone that will do it for you! There are so many good men (talented) out there in RV land willing to help one another!!!! So happy for you. Who would ever think that an engine maker such as Cummins would make such a major flaw in their engine & not make it a well known fact? Lol Judie
Right on! Glad you got some great help on that. Badge seems like an awesome person to help. I got a 94 Dodge Ram with a Cummins today -- going through the 25 years of paperwork to see if the KDP was ever done, but probably will have to do it soon. This video was definitely a great help!
I'm glad to see that you got things taken care of proactively. Badge is to be commended for his integrity, proficiency, and professionalism showing his character and reflecting his years of experience!
Badge is awesome! He is a straight shooter who knows what he is talking about and is genuinely a nice person. Glad you were able to get his help. I am enjoying your videos a lot, every video reminds me of something I need or want when I am finally able to get my Skoolie! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for giving Badge a well deserved channel referral. He is super entertaining and a wealth of knowledge. Gotta feel good getting that job under your belt. Thanks for sharing a great video!
Very lucky with both finding someone that could do it and that it was half way out when you opened it. A good breaker bar is a good tool to pickup yourself Harbor Freight has one $20 Item #62729 for a 25 inch 1/2 drive bar with a handle or $14 for the same without the handle so good to put a pipe on if you need extra leverage. Good for changing the belts as he showed and also good when you need to change a wheel. Some extensions and socket sets with larger size sockets for working on diesels and you are in a better place on tools you need. Now remember to feed and water the mechanic as good mechanics are always ones you want to keep happy.
Thank you so much! Also 14:00 . So far my experience is everyone in the diesel world is crooked so I really appreciate these videos so I can jsut handle it myself.
I thought I would share I discarded one of my scobbies. I have 2 and a small one growing so I am still in the Kumbutcha fermentation process. Whew I was worried. This process has shown me how I can grow a new scobby. 🙂
Glad you got that fixed. Those pins have ruined many many engines. I remember back when Chrysler was replacing engines like crazy because of them falling out and killing engines. The county college used to get their pullout engines and had rows and rows from dealers.
There will be mechanics all over USA pulling their hair out knowing their goose is cooked regarding pricing out a job. Good on you Badge for exposing them. Hey bro you hit the jackpot finding Badge let alone the pin being half out. Made for an excellent video too. All the best
Amen Seven, that was close mate, you certainly dodged a bullet there. Thanks heaps Badge, that's been concerning me ever since Seven found out about the KDP !! Seeya Rob......you may even sleep a little better now !!
As for shop fees, most repair centers follow a factory "bible" that lists the time and money a shop should charge this way there is some standardization between dealer shops. Non dealer service centers also tend to follow this bible to a degree as well. Within the prices stated for various jobs they have figured in cost of goods needed for the repair, the mechanics pay for this job, shop overhead ( lighting, heating, cleaning equipment, environmental charges levied by governments ect.) but they also can cut their prices a bit to be more competitive against dealers. I have seen shops charge for basically double since they replaced the water pump as well since it was based on the removal of some equipment and the inconvenience of working around other obstacles. A proper shop would only charge for the water pump and a few bucks more for a bit of the labor since the engine front was already dismanted. Keep up the good work! Blessings, peace and happiness to all!
I've watched Badge on other TH-cam's channels help several people with repairs to all sorts of mechanical/electrical and plumbing repairs. He is amazing, and thank you for helping so many Nomads. He also takes time to explain and educate folks. One huge project to check off your list, and great filming Seven!
I noticed you haven't crossed off "rear pinion seal" yet, if you're patient with me, i might be able to get that video put together in the next couple weeks. I'm sure i have one in my fleet that needs doing.
no rush on that video. it is still on my list of things to do and has been there for 2 yrs now. I just keep topping it off until I figure out how to do it, or find someone to help me do the repair. BTW: I may be passing thru Texas in October, if so, I'd love to visit your shop and get a tour while promoting your channel.
I saw a guy put self taping screw and has done it a bunch of time and no pins fell out but when it gets time to fix a front seal then they go a head and fix the pin the right way and he just cuts a piece of metal and cuts it like a tear drop and drills a hole in the big end and big enough the bolt will slide threw it and tap pin and metal tab in and put the bolt back in and you done.
Badge I wondered were my pry bar and breaker bar went yet you have never been near my tool box how did you do that Seven you and badge have a good day THE GRUMPY BUS
Badge is what i would call a mechanic... Not many blokes like him left that know what they are doing.. Now you get "fitters" or "technicians" theres no way one of them would do that job in the field,

I agree with you; the reason I didn't is because Badge works really quickly and I didn't want to hold him up and keep asking him to stop what he was doing so I could get close ups. I decided to compromise and not interrupt him, but shoot video when he seemed to be in between things (usually when he would be walking back from getting something from his truck).
Well I can understand and respect that. None the less it was very helpful and I appreciate both of you gentlemen taking the time to share this info. Thank you both!
Very BEST video i have seen,,and i wached em all,,he is a "Black Belt Mechanic"😁
I'm not skilled enough to do something like this myself and was elated to have Badge tackle this for me
Wow, Badge Rocks! That is a great friend to have. He saved your bacon and lots of grief.

Mister Tinkerman thanks 🙏
congrats on your new truck! I called Cummins and they have a database with engine serial numbers as well as KDP repairs
@@SevenWanderstheWorld - Oh wow. I'll have to look into that. I couldn't find anything in the receipts, so I'm assuming mine hasn't been done...
And I have the receipts for everything from this single owner truck.
I'm glad to see that you got things taken care of proactively. Badge is to be commended for his integrity, proficiency, and professionalism showing his character and reflecting his years of experience!

Uncle Badge saves another nomad. Youre really getting things done. I was beginning to think that your temporary was becoming permanent.
God Bless Badge, it sounds like he saved your engine and possibly your life!!!
VERY NICE, it shows when someone knows that product they are working on.
Thank you for giving Badge a well deserved channel referral. He is super entertaining and a wealth of knowledge. Gotta feel good getting that job under your belt. Thanks for sharing a great video!

Bage needs a cape, super hero

Amazing to watch a pro do the job. Glad it got done before your engine was killed!
Badge is ffffing unbelievable
Badge is awesome. Everyone needs a Badge. “I’m not asking ya I’m telling ya”
Great advice about writing "KDP done on [date]" on the timing cover. Sure wish more people would do that.
Wow he REALLY knows his stuff. Mad respect!
Badge is a good man as well as a former paratrooper like myself, hard to beat that combo, lol
Runs With Knives thanks 🛠🛠
Wow good that you got that sorted out before It chewed up all those cogs - A stitch In time saves 9 ...or rather 7 In this case!
Cute!

I think I've killed mine a couple times; now I tend to let them grow to be 1.5 inches thick and they seem more robust when thicker
Great save 7. Your friend definately earned his beer on this one. Take care...
Good to see luck swing your way for a change!
Badge is great. love his little sayings..."And Bob's your uncle" what????😁😁😁
always makes me smile when he says that
Glad you got that fixed. Those pins have ruined many many engines. I remember back when Chrysler was replacing engines like crazy because of them falling out and killing engines. The county college used to get their pullout engines and had rows and rows from dealers.

Looks like you’re a full time rv’er in the desert for the winter…me too and I did my kdp fix last winter on my’97 12 valve…out in the desert.
Wow half way out!! You are blessed 🙏 thank you Badge 🛠🛠🛠🛠❤️ How did you find out about the pin, Seven?
I bought the step van with the help of my friend Guisepi and he made me aware that I might need to do this repair
love guys who work like me...... lol, that guy knows his stuff.
definitely does
I guess you took out the emotional part of the first one, Good call Seven.
yes, decided to edit out that part
I'm about to open up our bus 5.9 to check I got a clip only and a whole engine gasket kit doing the main seal and exhaust /:turbo gaskets also.
9:22 Congratulations on your win!
Great job thank you for this video
Did you park facing North to avoid shadows in the engine area? It didn't look like you needed a new gasket on the front timing plate?
I wanted the engine in shadow so it would be more comfortable to work on. although I did show it, we installed a new gasket
Didn’t get to see him put it back together!
Love you guys.... Thanks
Fantastic.
William, he definitely has skills!
Seven Wanders the World sure thing man. I’d love to have you come by.
However I haven’t figured out how to send private messages. I’ve been looking.

You guys are great

Where in Arizona was this video shot? Scenery is amazing.. would love to check it out. Thanks
Seven: KDP 12 hours
Badge: well, ok, but I don't know what I'm going to do for the other 9 hours.
Hahhahaha
I know you talked about this for a long time
It doesn't usually destroy the engine. It normally just explodes the timing case.
Nice..
So how long can one expect to spend doing this on a 1995 Dodge 2500 4x4 PU---with having to do it outside--no rack--with basic hand tools and with air tools that can be used where there's room? Truck currently has a really bad crankseal leak right now, --approximately 240K on it and runs good. One can see the slight tear in the seal. I am assuming that the KDP hasn't moved to the point where it's ready to come out---and honestly don't know if it's already been done at some point, but assuming it hasn't. We've had the truck since 2007. I have worked on quite an assortment of vehicles in my life, ranging from Packard straight Eights to Volkswagens, along with 25 years of circle track cars and engines (largely American Motors stuff) thrown in. But I have little diesel experience--having only owned a 7.3 Ford IDI and this Dodge. I have been quoted around a grand to have this done. Can a person make the retainer tab himself from maybe a piece of 16 guage and get a replacement bolt that might be a little longer and engage a little more thread? Also, am I safe to assume that the radiator will have to be removed in order to make room to get at the front of the engine? And what of the intercooler and anything else I haven't thought of? I am a little bit like a fish outta water on this project----don't really want to do it, but also can't afford that kind of price tag to pay someone else. Your video did tell me alot, though, and I appreciate it--any tips would be welcome.
Loctite on the bolt holding the little plate holding the dowel pin? Or loctite on the dowel pin itself?
That dowel was BARELY sticking out although saying it was “halfway” out is more dramatic but yeah it would have maybe eventually fallen out. Mine was the same. I made my own dowel tab out of a large washer. Good insurance for the future. Pain in the ass and 30 cent part. Cummins is PROUD of their gaskets though aren’t they?? Also your mechanic didn’t mention it but I cleaned out the thread hole and cleaned up the dowel tab bolt and Loctited the shit out of it with red Loctite just to make sure. I also took out every other bolt inside the case and Loctited them all. Those are notoriously loose when you check the torque while doing the dowel pin fix. I like your machanic. I’d like to have a beer with that guy and talk diesels.
$$$ What a saving!! $$$
Are you supposed to use a any rtv on either side of the cover gasket?
What is that dowl pin for, does it do anything,?
When those engines are manufactured, that dowel pin aligns the aluminum timing gear housing to the block. Great in theory, but a *H U G E* blunder for later down the road when it comes loose!
Badge don’t take no shit from expensive repair shops! 😆
I'm replacing a gearcase because this pin. Luckily the oil leak was noticed before it was out of oil.
How do I find Badge Chanel ?
th-cam.com/channels/dFALR8PUEkZ-cYA4LxiJ_A.html
No captions??
captions are automated. I suggest reloading the video
It would be helpful if you would’ve got closer shots so we could see the detail of the items that badge was pointing out during the repair.
