    You can hear a small change in sound ,,i sounds "deeper" than before, thinking a couple oil changes ( like 3, every 2000 miles) will do it ,after the 3 oil changes just do it every 5k miles to be safe.

    I know these cars and engines quite well and I personally would put 5W40 into the engine and change it after 1 year or 15k kms. I use Ravenol NDT for my tuned N57 and I'm really happy with it. Other than that, these engines are notorious for oil pressure and timing chain problems, which doesn't automatically mean that your car is affected too. I personally changed my timing chain and the oil pump to make the engine live longer, just to be on the safe side. I've put in a upgrade oil pump from DiTuPa from germany. Besides that, you probably need to clean the air intake in a warm bath with cloth wash powder, drain cleaner and a water pump which pumps the cleaning solution through the air intake manifold. I did all this and it cleaned my plastic intake manifold spotless clean from the carbon buildup.

    Before and after sounded similar to me. That generation of BMW diesels were fairly noisy, I couldn't say for sure whether that was timing chain noise.

    George, I think you have Ista+, but is it usable for that old car?
    Try to figure out if you can use Ista+ to decide if the transmission chains has been tensioned.
    Maybe the one of the tensioner should be changed?
    Then I think the noise can be changed/lowered with some certain oil. I also think viscosity has an impact on the noise level.
    But oil changes do not repair broken things... 😉

  • @bodobendonjic5188

    so I have a N47 and just done my oil and filter but I also did the chain tensioner with engine in situ and its completely eliminated the chain noise. Not saying it will work for everyone but will say the tensioner in it wasnt doing the job, was much weaker than the upgraded tensioner. You have to remove the sway bar to get a breaker in there and 27mm long reach socket but wasnt the worst job ever.

  • @valdisfilks9427
    @valdisfilks9427 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    small change in engine sound, most likely due to new oil. Why don't you pour some oil on the new filter before installing it. this will allow faster new oil circulation on first startup after oil/filter change. I have 7yr old BMW F11 LCI B47D20 (60k miles) and an 10yr old R56 Mini N18B16A engine, 50k miles (did a precautionary timing chain change 30k miles back on Mini, also best to use 5W40 A3/B3 or B4 oil with mini). New Mini engine is v.good as it is the update , as is the B47D20, no timing chain change on BMW, runs great. Also, did a timing change on an older Mini with N14B16A, chain had stretched about 4mm, with 60k miles and 7 yr old car. Had a fantastic 2009 Audi V6 3.0TDI CDYA for 9 yrs, drove 100k trouble free miles all around europe, often with full car. New Audi V6 3.0 engines are not as good. Live in Sweden, so we have high engine wear cold starts, so i do use engine heaters. Good vid, thanks.

    Have you thought of doing an oil change with engine flush, removing some carbon buildups inside. I keep thinking about doing that myself because my car has over 400k km and see if that would make the engine run smoother and quieter cuz its an m47(tractor) 😀

    • @Coops95
      @Coops95 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Been told to avoid engine flush if it's not done regularly as could cause more problems ie oil leaks.

    • @leiflillandt1488
      @leiflillandt1488 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Coops95I have heard the exact same thing from a guy that has had a shop for more than 15 years, and worked with cars for 40 years.
      You have to start with flushes when the car is new!
      There are a lit of tiny channels and if a big "particulate" get stuck in such a channel or nozzle, you are in big trouble to say the least.
      Normal oils contain (small amounts of) detergents (and dispergents) and the best way is to change the oil after a "few" miles.

    • @GeorgeAusters
      @GeorgeAusters  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @piovo1

      What year is the car? If it’s a E series the ZF6s usually you get a whine or upon deceleration the rpm needle bounces up and down.

    • @wasy35
      @wasy35 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a 2004 745i - I don't hear a whine but the RPM do bounce upon downshifts - but RPM also bounce when I start the car. and not in gear just idling

    • @piovo1
      @piovo1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@wasy35 not really on downshifts but lets say your in 6th gear around 2000rpm once you let go of the throttle and are slowing down without braking, the rpms will just be bouncing up and down by a few hundred rpms. Well at least thats the most common faulty torque converter symptom.

    • @wasy35
      @wasy35 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@piovo1 I'll try that today - to see if the RPM bounce and I've noticed that they do but I'll double check - the bouncing of the RPM is what clued me in to the fact that the Torque converter may be faulting. Again, thanks for the guidance.
