This song is amazing. very well written. my school is playing it for marching band. it still sounds wonderful. im a trumpet so i have to play those high c's which are hard when your marching.
I played this last year in my high school (i play trombone) and it was FANTASTIC. I love to play it and listen to it. We got an excellent report from judges when we played it at competition. My favorite song i've played in high school other than Vesuvius and Russian Christmas Music
Played this song in 10th grade. My friend was really worried this would be a bad song considering he didn't like playing a song that was also played Samuel Hazo called Ascend. In the end, he was worried for nothing.
Recently graduated high school. It was a good final year playing lead trombone, it was amazing to here this peace's fast paced pulsing beats & wonderful blending chords and being our last contest piece. Something that will bring good memories whenever I listen!
We played this my sophomore year, and every time I hear this, I get so excited. This is one of the few pieces of music that actually gives me goose bumps because is THAT COOL. Plus, I played it, (percussion) so I am just thinking back to how awesome it was to be a part of. SO AWESOME!
I am a freshman at my high school and we are playing this song. I absolutely love it, as I get to do the timpani solos. It's so much fun. The Melody and Harmony in this song is amazing! I love it~!
I played trumpet in high school and I remember the first time I looked at the sheet music.....seeing some of the notes, I was like no way. But after we played it a few times I was like, oh my god this is great. One of my favorite pieces we played.
We're playing this song in band, and our director loves all of the cymbal and gong parts during the crescendos. Yesterday he looked at the guy on the gong and said "This has got to be the biggest gong hit of your life." It took ten minutes to calm us down
I graduated in '09, and after years of cymbals and bass drum in concert band, I finally went for the snare drum parts. I remember using this very video and the sheet music to nail down exactly how the snare part went.
just listen to this over and over again and practice it a lot... You'll get it down, and it will sound good as long you don't try to rush it, make sure you include accents and keep a wide dynamic range. This is actually a pretty easy snare part when all said and done. Good luck!
I actually came up with a marching show idea to propose to my band director, either about aerial combat, or regular combat, and I chose this for the closer. The opener is Into the Storm by Robert Smith, and the ballad is Dusk by Steven Bryant
We're playing this in Wind Ensemble for NSBA (: The first trumpet part is exhausting. Hahah. But I love playing it. 2:38 is my favorite part to play. My friend Shawn and I are the only two first trumpets, so it's fun to play out that part.
I am a freshman at my school and I play the French Horn, and this piece is AMAZING but extremely difficult. The horn in this recording got up to that high A perfectly, and it is just one of the hardest parts for the horn in this song. My band is doing this, and we don't sound nearly this good. WOW!
@ValenciaLydia OMG!!! I Love that part too! Except, I wasn't 1 of 2, I was 1 of 4 playing first trumpet. Although, being first chair as a junior had its perks :) I'm a Senior now :D
I practiced. For about 4 or so hours. A day. For a month. (school month, mind you) They're still hard, specially when I don't own a xylophone at home to practice on too and my life is busy as all hell.
I Really love this piece! We played this last year for competition. As first chair trumpet, I must say it gets a little testy now and then but overall, it's an amazing work and a blast to play. Well Done Mr. Hazo!
We got this piece today. God I have been waiting forever to perform this piece. Our band actually has done some pretty good work with it so far. We just need to make things tighter. Our band director is thinking about have this piece as a closer for all of our concerts (Fall concert, Band competition concert and National music festival in DC) So psyched! :)
NOTE WHEN USING THIS PIECE FOR SHOW/COMPETITION!!! This song is fairly recent and hasn't really become a part of mainstream band repertoire. As such, unless you perform exceptionally well the judges will not score you very high.
@RadioUpload I disagree. My high school Wind Ensemble played Arabesque and American Overture last year and scored I's in all categories at a state competition. Judges love new pieces.
Played this my junior year of high school and I've always thought of some metropolis in the sky (think Columbia from BioShock Infinite) at 1:19 to 1:58. Especially at 1:39; it's so majestic. Definitely my favorite part of the whole song.
This song is going to be a part of my marching band's 2012 field show. We got the music to sight-read a few days ago and I'm SO excited to be playing this. I play mellophone for marching and it's been a very interesting challenge :)
My band played this song for m.p.a. I LOVE IT!

I love first clarinet part! so much fun. Played this my freshman year!
I got invited to do an honor band and he was the conductor. He has a brilliant mind set and is overall a very interesting person!!
Geez this is glorious. Timpani and Marimba solos sound like fun.
Played this in 2004 for marching band what a year that was

Got to play the timpani, and it was the MOST AWESOME THING EVER!!!!!

Brilliant. Played this my senior year in high school on clarinet.
That clarinet is beast lol
we are doing this for out marching band show. It is Amazing and very high level. I play trumpet so i get the fun sixteenth note in the beginning.
This song makes me think of flying like Superman...
I get to perform this in a college band, while i am a junior in high school.
Played first horn on this, one of the best and most fun pieces i've ever played
i love the clarinet part... 1st clarinet... but yeah... i miss this
Played this song in 10th grade. My friend was really worried this would be a bad song considering he didn't like playing a song that was also played Samuel Hazo called Ascend. In the end, he was worried for nothing.
Our band Performed this at the Missouri music educators conference. It is an amazing piece of music.
Playing this Timpani part for my band this year was a memorable experience, it'll be a while to top this one, I also wish i had this keyboard part!
+Bryan Torres ayyyyy, I have that part too!
Recently graduated high school. It was a good final year playing lead trombone, it was amazing to here this peace's fast paced pulsing beats & wonderful blending chords and being our last contest piece. Something that will bring good memories whenever I listen!

I played this song my sophomore year, and loved.
Played this at my high school's veterans day concert 2016. Amazing song! Played trombone since 2013 (6th grade).
We played this my sophomore year, and every time I hear this, I get so excited. This is one of the few pieces of music that actually gives me goose bumps because is THAT COOL. Plus, I played it, (percussion) so I am just thinking back to how awesome it was to be a part of. SO AWESOME!

kudos to you man! You rock those timpani solos! :)
Torie Inman Thanks haha! I gotta say the Snare Drum part is pretty cool too. Mallet 3 is definitely the hardest because of all of the crazy runs haha~
I played tge xylophone part 2years ago. It was hard at first but then it became easy because i love the song..
I've been think of writing a marching band show, I believe I have found my opener.
we performed this for a competition last year along with a few others (persis, the gemeinhardt suite) and pretty much won every award available. :D
thanks. on our show we got fourth at our state fair. type in southmont state fair if you want to see it. good luck to you too
I played the snare part for this song my sophomore year, and I can gladly say that this song alone made me a better musician! Such an amazing part!
playin dis for all southern =] phunn
I absolutely love this piece :) Beautifully written.
we got a one for this song. so apparently we performed it exceptionally well. THAMKS
I played trumpet in high school and I remember the first time I looked at the sheet music.....seeing some of the notes, I was like no way. But after we played it a few times I was like, oh my god this is great. One of my favorite pieces we played.
i got the timpani part for this song- scared me so much in the sightread, but i loved it after i figured it out
it's also a pretty difficult piece of music, so it's very rewarding when you perform it and it sounds amazing.
by god... we just had to play this a couple of weeks ago. It was super fun to play. Just had a hard time with those 16th notes in the 5/4 Measure ^^;
We're playing this song in band, and our director loves all of the cymbal and gong parts during the crescendos. Yesterday he looked at the guy on the gong and said
"This has got to be the biggest gong hit of your life."

Perhaps my all-time favorite concert band piece... I am a sucker for anything that has French horns playing perfect 5th intervals :)
lol. same story. here. good luck.

crawfordsjamie wow first comment 8 years ago. How time flies....
hitting that high C is soo hard, but once you get it, the feeling is amazing :$ :')
Yeah, I'm playing snare for this too. It's a pretty fun part. I think Hazo knows how to write pretty well for percussion.
I actually came up with a marching show idea to propose to my band director, either about aerial combat, or regular combat, and I chose this for the closer. The opener is Into the Storm by Robert Smith, and the ballad is Dusk by Steven Bryant
Xylo time! Too bad it's not too easy to hear.
We're playing this in Wind Ensemble for NSBA (: The first trumpet part is exhausting. Hahah. But I love playing it. 2:38 is my favorite part to play. My friend Shawn and I are the only two first trumpets, so it's fun to play out that part.
Samuel R. Hazo is the most awesome composer of all time!
I am a freshman at my school and I play the French Horn, and this piece is AMAZING but extremely difficult. The horn in this recording got up to that high A perfectly, and it is just one of the hardest parts for the horn in this song. My band is doing this, and we don't sound nearly this good. WOW!
Many of you will find that the percussion part for this song is impressive. To my understanding is that Samuel R. Hazo is a percussionist.
Playing this for marching band this year, love the song, favorite of the three, the end hit thing feels so amazing, gives me shivers every time.
I got the snare on this song, and it was so hardcore. This and Solas Ane are my favorite Hazo songs
the percussion part was amazing on this. Especially when you have people who love what they do playing it.
@ValenciaLydia OMG!!! I Love that part too! Except, I wasn't 1 of 2, I was 1 of 4 playing first trumpet. Although, being first chair as a junior had its perks :) I'm a Senior now :D

They're still hard, specially when I don't own a xylophone at home to practice on too and my life is busy as all hell.
2:10 DAT TIMPANI!!!!
Yup. I'm playing it in concert band right now. And my director is taking it at a slightly brighter temp than this too. It's nuts!
I Really love this piece! We played this last year for competition. As first chair trumpet, I must say it gets a little testy now and then but overall, it's an amazing work and a blast to play. Well Done Mr. Hazo!
can anyone tell me a good way to get my band director to buy this for us?
Y'all here from Oak middle school Advanced band?
Anybody played flute for this piece? I know your pain...
this sounds so wonderful! is the flute part hard? cause it sounds like it! i really want to play it! i like the runs in the middle of it!
yes you can :P
@vampireeclipses91 Ahh, I live for those kinds of clarinet parts. :)
Umm... I played this song, I feel horn part of this song is so high sound....u//u
TuKutukutukutukutuku
@TheaterGeek7777776 we have it its amazing
@RadioUpload I can confirm that... also is there a written in gong or tam-tam part or are people just putting it in?
yup... the trumpet parts make you feel like you are a percussionist!
NOTE WHEN USING THIS PIECE FOR SHOW/COMPETITION!!!
This song is fairly recent and hasn't really become a part of mainstream band repertoire. As such, unless you perform exceptionally well the judges will not score you very high.
@raiskel1 then ur director iz legit....
Did you try drawing one on pieces of paper and use your fingers? That always helped.
I'm a flute player :/
Emsi Desi99 Lol I'm a clarinet player. We're playing this in a Spring performance. Basically if you're not brass then.....
I'm playing timpani for this :P
and BTW, this same recording is on Stanton!
You can't double tongue on reeds :
Principle trumpet's over playing...
I HATE THOSE XYLO RUNS... >.>' So hard...
Loved and hated this song SO much.
hahaha or not the snare either... If so, I want to know who the percussionist is... at 7th grade... He will be better than hazo himself!
... Not at that god damned speed.
And not for a high school percussionist like me, either. :S
fantastic piece. but the trombone part is fairly boring.
This song is going to be a part of my marching band's 2012 field show. We got the music to sight-read a few days ago and I'm SO excited to be playing this. I play mellophone for marching and it's been a very interesting challenge :)
