      Not really, you're actually closer than most english-speakers. Alocasia is latin and even latin experts do not agree on the pronunciation of the language but it's definitely not Allow-kay-sia; that is english pronunciation. The closest phonetic spelling I can think of for English-speakers would be Allo-kas-sia (Allo is just like how you guys pronounce aloe).

    Staghorn ferns have a special place in my heart since that was the first plant I actively collected, many years ago. I hope those become more popular. I’d love to see unique specimens become affordable and available in the US. They are great for space saving, since they can be mounted and hung on the wall. It’s a unique plant that adds a little something different to a collection. I’ve also been loving unique, variegated, orchids. Also a plant that can be mounted and hung.

    What I find interesting is that in Asia they are obsessed with the dwarf and silvery white trichome covered platycerium varites but they seem to be way more suitable for the type on environment you'd get in most European or American homes. A lot of the serious collectors out there have to climate control rooms to get the more mild conditions these ferns prefer. I would love to see these crazy plants become more popular in the west.

    Problem with Alocasia is they import terribly, which may keep the variegated price higher…I hear you on philodendrons but they are just so much easier to ship and import which makes it more accessible especially with the cool hybrids 😅

    Literally my 2024 wish list. Anthuriums, variegated Alocasias, and more carnivorous plants. And a couple more Hoyas then I’ll be satisfied there. I guess I’m not alone in the first 2. As an Asian, yeah, what Sean from Onlyplants said, Staghorn Ferns are coming in very very strong within Asian hobbyist,
    I think it started from last 1-2 years ago when a Platycerium won the award for most prized plant collection in hobby in Taiwan, since then Platycerium has made a slow climb to fame with many dedicated sellers and various degrees of Staghorn fern forms and sizes (some just the size of your palm at it’s max size)
    Perhaps due to Asian having a more limited and constrained spaces, vertical plants like Staghorn ferns will always has a place, and how so many Asian has grown them like an art display, framed, with a spotlight shining a light on it, it is a nice plant to have if you only one a few but display it nicely within your interior (Kawanrusa from aloneinoasis or Benjiplant did this)
    In fact, I’m actually kinda surprised the West didn’t catch on this trend at all 😅
    But apart from that, I myself have decided to finally give Caudex plant a try after the price has slowly declined down and finally got myself a Phyllanthus mirabilis, (give me 2 more months and I’ll finally add more into my Platycerium collection, been eyeing a really narrow and long Platycerium willincki along with a many fingered one)

    i completely agree with philodendron hybrids being the next big thing and same for monstera species variants. i do see more anthuriums as well but theyre still really not super popular with my plant friends, dont get me wrong they like the anthuriums, i got a few myself but eh, i see them still being a little more niche consumers than persay the philos, monstera, epipremnums.i think this is the year of the variegated/hybrid philo/monstera

    My Anthuriums eventually turn brown. I have had no success with Alocasias but wonder if they just die down & then grow back, like perennials outdoors here in Wisconsin. I twice had Homalomenas with dark green, heart-shaped leaves, but they fail, growing smaller, not bigger, after a few years.

  • @nackedgrils9302
    @nackedgrils9302 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think that you had a couple interesting perspectives in this video. Your own perspective about collectors wanting a challenge goes exactly opposite to mine though, I've killed enough plants as it is already, I'm pretty much done with Alocasia and Anthurium, I'll keep the ones that I really love in Pon but I've given up on these two genera almost completely. Now I just want some easy plants that will reward my efforts or plants that I can stick in a high-humidity terrarium and just forget about.
    I recently got back onto Instagram and almost all I see is Anthurium hybrids and variegated Alocasia... Can't say that I care about any of these trends. But I will not deny that this is what's mostly going on right now. I loved Sean's perspective too, I think he's mostly right but I don't think that the Platycerium will ever take off here where I live, it's not nearly hot or humid enough for these to grow, unfortunately.
    At the moment, my personal interest lies mostly in the different morphological varieties and different sports of Monstera deliciosa (now that I can afford them) but also in terrarium plants that nobody talks about. I'd love to make a bioactive poison dart frog setup but I want it to look natural so unicorn plants are out of the question while small-leaf plants, ferns, mosses, shinglers and climbers are all welcome. I might be dipping my toes into begonias as well, some of them are real show-stoppers and they're not expensive, which is nice!

    You introduced me to that stunning V. Jacklyn, and I think I’d love to see jewels like A scalprum or A platinum with crisp variegation on them. Or an A mellow leaf texture with A azlani colors. 🤯

  • @monsteraetc
    @monsteraetc 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I’m wondering how this is going to go for these Legacy growers and nurseries. The last year and a half has shown the masses that anything that costs “thousands” now will likely be in TC and in Home Depot or Walmart within 6-12 months. The variegated Alocasia will crash quickly as well, because they DO make corms readily. Thai Cons have gone from “Unicorn” to “can’t sell for more than $40” in less than 6 months.
    Personally, I think I’m done buying for a while. I have my collection, and at this point I’m back to collecting just for my aesthetic. I’m selling off a sizable chunk of my collection to move deeper into velvet anthurium, and anything else I keep is simply because I like them. 🤷‍♀️
    (I did just get a Homalomena ‘Pink Diamond’ and don’t regret what I paid)

    Aroid plants have been my favorite since i started my plant collection. Me personally i have about 100 plants and i tend to buy them based on how they look. the genus to me doesnt matter. That being said, the anthuriums and alocasias are probably my least favorite types of plants, they dont like me :(
    honestly im hoping to see a spike in the the variegated philodendrons like the orange princess and spirit sancti. hoping to also add a variegated florida beauth and a florida ghost as well.
    its honestly crazy to me how having 100 plants my list is still long and it doesnt seem like i actually have that many.

    I think anthurium hybrids will remain very popular until the market gets oversaturated by all of the variants. It is already very confusing to customers. Just watch any ecuagenera live sale. I think this will reach a tipping point until that market crashes.
    As for variegation, it has become so widespread that people can be picky in their choices. We'll probably see a move towards stable variegation.

    Ridiculous these prizes, Gonna propagate them and give them away if they also give at least 2 propagations away!

    Dang it- I can already tell I’m about to break the “no spider mite magnets in the plant room” rule for more pink varigation 🫣😂😍

    I guess it’s because I’m just getting into the hobby but most of these plants are just not visually appealing , for me at least . I’m still stuck on the alocasias and monstera d. type of plants or anything that looks remotely exotic . Most of the heart shaped leaves just look so darn ugly to me 😂 I don’t get the hype yet

      Honestly this is the best way to be into plants! Find plants you love and buy them. Don’t buy things bc of the hype!
