Thank you! I just received plants the size of the one that is restarting for you. I do not have an Ikea cabinet, so I really appreciated your suggestion on creating my own. I am moving all my existing plants to moss poles. Some love it, and others are slower at adjusting . The plant soil you use saved some of my Philodendron by providing a breathable soil. Philodendron and Monstera are my favorites. Thank you so much, and Happy Growing.

I am a person who is attached to things. This can be furniture, favorite sweaters, or even plants. So it's much nicer to grow a tiny offshoot than to buy an adult plant! We grow older together almost like buddies.

We in India recognise the word batik easily as it is a form of printing on clothes using empty spaces and wax. May be plant community has taken the word batik from batik printing. Recently I bought a syngonium from local nursery with name tag batik. It has a beautiful pattern of light and dark green and some white.

Eeeek! Squeal! So excited to see this progress video. I think most of us buy the smallest of our wish list plant as that is the only way to afford our dream plants. Humidity cabinet is the way to go in the beginning. It's basically a plant nursery. Just like you wouldn't send a 7 year old off to college. Same thing happened with my frydek. Ordered a really big one cause I was like "well, it's my dream plant, might as well" and it lost all of its leaves within a week! I was absolutely heartbroken and angry with myself as I'm always buying baby plants and with this one I kinda broke my rule 😂 she lost her entire root system as it turned out (root rot). She's recovering now and gave me already 3 new baby frydeks so maybe as you've said it's just a blessing in disguise.

That reminds me - my frydek needs a repot. I think this one needs a smaller pot, mine is growing in small 9cm (7cm tall) pot and it has some nice leaves. It’s been growing all winter here in Poland and the light conditions are really poor and humidity with ac on - you can guess😂 I water when the leaves start getting droopy (sorry) but it seems to like me, and the leaves… a lot of white what a beauty. You should try separating the babies and put them in different conditions to figure out what they like. Sometimes we give too much care 😊

I have heard a lot of people had issues growing Alocasia frydek in soil. When I got mine (probably around the same time as you) I put mine in pon immediately. And it’s been loving life in pon.
I also love getting very small plants. They are so cute how small they are and the reward for growing them big feels so good

I always start growing my plants from the size of starter plant, that means they were super tiny when they first came home.
Extra care is needed but the sense of achievement is CRAZY.
Totally recommend Flora Magnifica for those extra special plants! :)

Thanks so much for your hard work posting videos that include updates! It’s always nice to know that the information in the video has been successful or unsuccessful- I learn from both outcomes! Sometimes it gets difficult as a viewer to scroll back through previous videos and find the references to certain plants or techniques that have been mentioned over several months time and figure out what the story is- I love that yours are mostly contained in easy to reference videos! Your hard work is really appreciated!

Hallo Jan. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland. Habe letztens ein Video mit einer anderen Alocasia gesehen. Hier hingen auch die Blätter ohne dass ein Problem erkennbar war. Es stellte sich heraus, dass die Nährstoffkonzentration viel zu hoch war. Zu viel gedüngt. Wäre noch eine Überlegung wert.

Love seeing a time lapse of baby plant to well established (fat roots) plant. And having one of the four fail was proof that even though it was given the same, primo conditions, happy, healthy growth is never guaranteed. TY

I really appreciate this type of video! I typically buy bigger plants verse smaller ones. Mainly b/c I'm impatient & I love a large plant. I'm in the US so spring is just starting here & now you've motivated me to start small so I can appreciate the journey

Me too!!! I love to buy tiny tc plugs and grow them up. I’ve always felt like i was cheating when i bought a plant in anything larger than a 6” (15 cm) pot anyway. That is the fun for me.

Love seeing the babies growing, set backs and all. Frydeks are notorious for driving a struggle bus😹 I had 2, first one put out all white leaves till it died and second one threatened to do the same. After finally a decent variegated leaf and some research, she seams happy. Frydeks might be heavy feeders, need bright light ( located directly in front of grow light) and enjoy semi hydro/ bottom watering ( Im using pearlite heavy chunky mix and leave a cm water in catch pot ) so far so good. Looking forward to updates on all the new additions, Thanks 😻

One of the reasons I love this channel is the effort Jan puts into each episode by filming over several months so we can see the results without waiting for the follow-up. IMO the planning, time, and editing required for each episode make SPG the most professionally made house-plant "hobbyist" channel out there. The others seem lazy in comparison, especially with the recent trend toward "plant chores" or "house tour" videos where we get the pleasure of watching someone water or clean their Ikea cabinet for 30 minutes. There's no comparison really.
There’s a time & a place for houseplant tours & unboxing but agree, where possible, i like to make as good of a viewer experience as possible … & proof is ultimately in the pudding 🤭 thank you!
This was sooooo amazing!! Probably your third video I watched today while working! Seeing the Timelapse and how much they grew but also knowing everything isn’t always perfect was just so nice! You really give me ideas for my own plants and I was buying GT foliage focus at an anthurium store and the worker referenced your videos, asked if I followed you and said you use it!
Flora Magnifica are my favourite plant shop, Dexter is always super helpful. I have lots of big plants that started out as TC plantlets from Flora Magnifica.
Another awesome video! Absolutely love the format and watching the growth process. Looking fwd to similar ones. What’s also great is that in this vid the plants of choice don’t need a moss pole! Very refreshing.
I've learned so much from watching your videos, I mostly like how you do the before and after plant videos. Because I'm on a budget I only by baby plants that cost $10.00 or less. I've never had one to come with pest so far and I don't grow them in a special cabinet, they seem to get use to my environment and grow. What I'm working on is growing my plants on moss poles so they can be big and beautiful like yours. Thank you for showing us the do's and don't's in plant growth!

Seeing the progress (of all stripes...) is a good thing. At some point, a good amount of "luck" is required despite our best efforts.
I've just brought home a "blushing philodendron" in a 2" pot, and fortunately I managed to perform my own version of isolation just as a precaution as you mentioned here.
Because my little botanicals live on my desk (living desk I call it), I had to ensure nothing extra came home that would do a bad thing to my little garden.
I placed it in clear grocery bag typically used for veggies at the store and lightly closed it with a rubber band. I opened it daily for a breather and resealed. Three days later, it's among friends with roots about, requiring a 4" pot to continue its growth.

I got a sancti and I put mine in a clear cup with perlite with a another clear cup taped on top it’s been like two months and I’m starting to see roots. It grows slowly but it’s so healthy I only open in a few times a week so it’s not too exposed 😊 I love the journey! Congrats Jan!
Love the video! I am much much older than you and have grown houseplants for 50 years (more than 250 currently), but I still love the challenge and adventure of getting tiny new plants and watching them grow. Leaf cuttings, stem cuttings, succulent crumbs, whatever.

In my experience, and based on what I’ve seen a lot of people say online, Frydeks don’t really like being in cabinets. I have mine in ambient humidity (50% average) and water when it’s almost dry. Seems to like it!

Yeah, seems like there is difference between the alocasia types. I let all of mine dry out as much as possible with a moderately chunky mix and 60% humidity otherwise they start drooping instantly. Never had the droop of a humidity change before so don't know if that is a common problem 🤔
Thank you so much for another amazing video!! My experience with A. Frydek is that they stress very easily, more easily than any other alocasia I’ve kept but. With one I had, even just bringing him home from the nursery was enough of a change to stress him and he wilted and dropped all of his leaves. But they always grow back with the new growth acclimatised to their new home.

I've been trying tiny plants in a humidity box and I just up-potted some anthurium hybrids! They had three months in the box and are now in an open shelf with 70 - 80% humidity. 🤞

Another vote for this type of video = your journey with specific plants. Even better if/when you get 2 of the same and compare their progress to demonstrate that plants are individuals (just like humanoids).. Esp like your wrap up about all the variables in plant care and what, if anything, you would do differently.
Love this type of video, well worth all of the effort. I got a teeny tiny baby anthurium and watching the leaves size up is the best part.

Hey Jan! Thanks for this video. I was under the impression that TC plants needed some special kind of care, and you showed that beyond giving the best conditions one is able, there isn't really any mystery. Your videos are always a great watch and lesson, Jan. Especially when you have time lapses of plant progressions and how you speak candidly about your own journey with them.
Personally speaking, I really love alocasias, but I don't appreciate how susceptible they are to certain things that require more attention for their overall care and success rate.(unfortunately).
However, if I could provide it, I would. Jaclyn,(spelling?)especially is my favorite.
If they grow they are amazing!! But they can also be a total pain in the butt!! Haha thanks :)
@@sydneyplantguy yes, exactly! We've given the 'Jaclyn' several attempts, and that poor thing each time just gets overtaken with mites,(those sneaky bitches!)
Rather than put a plant through torture, we just stopped buying them, not to mention risking spreading those things further to our other plants. We have far more expensive avoids that we would rather protect and keep healthy. ✨️

I find that Frydeks are a little bit strange like many Alocasias, but my guess would be that they don't like that much humidity as the mold would indicate, so maybe something like 80% would be better.
I can also confirm your findings that potentially larger growing alocasias are more hardy, because I have a Macrorrhiza that's growing like crazy. It's still an Alocasia so it drops the oldest leaf every now and then if I don't feed it a lot, but it's so much easier to please than the smaller Alocasias.

This was a great video Jan. A complete story in one episode, so to speak. Very satisfying because you've answered all my questions, even the ones I wasn't aware I wanted to know! It's great that although you 'lost' a plant, you've gained 3 replacements, plus the corm has sprouted! I LOVE alocasias, I have both a batik blizzard and a variegated frydek. Semi hydro works for me with most of my plants but it's a must for alocasias. Thank you for your video!!!

Ive been looking at Flora Magnifica for a while now for the Burle Marx Flame (still too expensive for the tiny plantlet so will wait) but will def look into the Alocasia Odora Batik....STUNNING plant. Thanks for sharing Jan 👌🏼

I only had more common alocasias like a green portodora, macroriza and amazonica, but from my experience, they are the fussiest tropical plants about being overwatered. Do it once and you'll see the oldest leaf get yellow or soft immediately, before even observing any root damage. The good thing is that even if there's nothing left, they almost always resprout.
